Nor one nor t other had slept a wink! The old Dutch clock and the Chinese plate Appeared to know as sure as fate There was going to be a terrible spat. (I was n t there; I simply state What was told to me by the Chinese plate!) The gingham dog went Bow-wow-wow! And the calico cat replied Mee-ow! The air was littered, an hour or so, With bits of gingham and calico, While the old Dutch clock in the chimney-place Up with its hands before its face, For it always dreaded a family row! (Now mind: I m only telling you What the old Dutch clock declares is true!) The Chinese plate looked very blue, And wailed, Oh, dear! what shall we do! But the gingham dog and the calico cat Wallowed this way and tumbled that, Employing every tooth and claw In the awfullest way you ever saw And, oh! how the gingham and calico flew! (Don t fancy I exaggerate I got my news from the Chinese plate!) Next morning, where the two had sat They found no trace of dog or cat; And some folks think unto this day That burglars stole that pair away! But the truth about the cat and pup Is this: they ate each other up! Now what do you really think of that! (The old Dutch clock it told me so, And that is how I came to know.) 3 Pet Food Cats Rabbit Stew from the book Natural Cat Care by Christopher Day: This meal is also good enough for human consumption. So get out two plates, for kitty and you. Rabbit meat (wild or domestic), boned, cut into small pieces A little olive oil A few springs of parsley, rosemary, marjoram and thyme Vegetable stock (unsalted, so best home prepared) Sweet potato, carrot, celery, leek, turnip, peas Basic Cat Food From Ecolife: A guide to Green living ¼ tsp. olive oil or salmon oil 1 tsp. grams of feline vitamin/mineral supplement 3 Tbsp. potato, cooked without skin ¼ Cup of carbs (choose one: cooked pasta, white rice, barley, oatmeal, peas) ½ Cup of cooked animal protein (whole meat chicken, lamb, rabbit, beef, pork, tuna, salmon) Mix all of the ingredients together (a blender works really well for this purpose) and store the food in the fridge until needed. 1 Can tuna ½ Cup boiled rice ¼ Cup pureed liver 2-3 Sprigs parsley chopped Tuna Patties From Healthy Recipes for Pets Drain the tuna and mix everything together. Make 6-7 balls and then pat them into patties. Store in the fridge and serve to your cat. This is one cat treat recipe that your feline friend won t be finicky about. Sautée the rabbit chunks in the olive oil. Sprinkle with herbs. Add the stock water and bring to a boil. Cover with lid and place in a medium-low oven until cooked through. Add the chopped vegetable and peas and return to the oven for a another 45 minutes. Let cool, then give to kitty. Salmon Delight From LovetoKnowCats 1 Can salmon (or fresh salmon) 1 Tablespoon cooked, mashed broccoli ¼ Cup whole wheat bread crumbs 1 tsp. brewer s yeast Combine all ingredients in a bowl. Stir together and serve. Keep any leftovers refrigerated, and discard after three days. Sardine Treat also from LovetoKnowCats 1 Can sardines in oil 2 Tablespoons of grated carrot ⅓ Cup cooked oatmeal Combine all ingredients in a bowl. Mash ingredients together and serve. Store leftovers in the refrigerator, and discard after three days. Bon Appetite! Large amounts of liver can cause Vitamin A toxicity which affects muscles and bones, and canned tuna can lead to malnutrition as it lacks the proper levels of vitamins and minerals So be careful how often you use some of these recipes. 4 Pet Food Cats Koko s Cupcakes Lilian Jackson Braun graciously provided A Taste of Murder with this favorite treat of A Cat Who... 2 Pounds pork livers Water to cover 2 Tbsp. wheat germ 2 Tbsp. salad oil Pinch dried catnip Raw rolled oats Boil the livers in water until tender. Purée in blender or whatever. Blend in wheat germ, oil and mint. Remove to a bowl. Stir in enough rolled oats to make a thick paste. Spoon into muffin cups and freeze. 1 Cupcake serves 2 cats. Sunday Salmon Dinner 1 7-ounce can Norwegian salmon ounce pkg. fish flavored dry catfood or ¾ cup if you don t use individual packages 1 8-ounce package soft cream cheese Chop salmon into small pieces. Combine well with dry cat foot. Cut cream cheese into 1 squares and roll them into balls. Roll the balls in the mix until thoroughly covered. (omit cream cheese for a fat cat.) Serve immediately or refrigerate in a tightly sealed container. New Year s Tuna 1 6-ounce can tuna packed in oil (water for a fat cat) ½ Pint half & half (2% milk for a fat cat) Mix ingredients together into mushy. Humans won t like it so you have it all to yourself. And although we all deserve a big treat on New Year s Eve, this is probably enough for you and a feline friend. Serve precisely at 12:00 midnight for a prosperous New Year. T 4

5 Pet Food Cats Whether you want to prevent your cat from scratching up the couch or deter stray cats from using your front yard as their personal litter box, a DIY cat repellent spray can go a long way in keeping unwanted furry guests away. 1 Boil orange peels in water and strain the liquid essence to create an orange-scented spray; 2 You can also create a solution out of cinnamon, rosemary, and lavender; 3 Another solution out of lemon oil and eucalyptus oil. 6 Pet Food Cats Foods to Avoid for Cats The following foods should not be given to cats. Some may cause only a mild upset, while others can cause serious illness or death. These are common food items and not a complete list of foods which may be toxic to your cat. Feed quality cat foods specially formulated for them that meets their nutritional requirements. Items to Avoid May Result In Alcoholic Beverages Baby Food Bones of poultry, Fish, other meat sources Canned tuna (human consumption.) Chocolate, coffee, tea, other caffine Citrus Oil Extracts Dog Food Fat Trimmings Grapes and Raisins Human vitamin supplements containing iron Liver Macadamia Nuts Milk and other dairy products Moldy or spoiled food Mushrooms Onions and Garlic (raw, cooked or powder). Garlic less toxic than onions. Potato, rhubarb & tomato leaves; potato and tomato stems. Raw eggs Raw fish Salt Sugary Foods Table Scraps in large quantities onion, garlic, mushrooms. (see above) Yeast dough Intoxication, coma and death Can contain onion powder, which may be toxic to cats. Can result in nutritional deficiencies if fed in large amounts. Contain caffeine, theobromine and affects the heart and nervous system. Can cause vomiting If fed repeatedly may result in malnutrition and heart disease. Can lead to pancreatitis. Contain an unknown toxin which may lead to kidney damage Can damage the lining of the digestive system and be toxic to other organs including the liver and kidneys. Large amounts can cause Vitamin A toxicity which affects muscles and bones. Contain an unknown toxin which can affect digestive and nervous systems and muscle. Some cats are lactose intolerant and diarrhea may result if ingested. Can contain multiple toxins causing vomiting, diarrhea and can affect other organs. Can contain toxins which may affect multiple systems in the body causing shock and resulting in death. Can damage red blood cells and cause anemia Cats are more susceptible than dogs. Can affect the digestive, nervous and urinary systems. More of a problem in livestock. Decreases the absorption of biotin (a B vitamin) which can lead to skin and hair coat problems. Also may contain Salmonella. Can result in a thiamine deficiency leading to loss of appetite, seizures and in severe cases, death More common if fed regularly. In large quantities it may lead to electrolyte imbalances. Can lead to obesity, dental problems and possibly diabetes mellitus. Not nutrionally balanced and may contain onion, garlic or mushrooms. 7 Pet Food Dogs Homemade Dog Food "I have made dog food ever since my dogs were puppies - 4 years now! They are very healthy and have never had any problems. You can also add it to their kibble. They love it! My dogs are large breed so they get 2 cups in the a.m. and p.m." 6 Cups water 1 Pound ground turkey 2 Cups brown rice 1 teaspoon dried rosemary ½ 16 ounce package frozen broccoli, carrots and cauliflower combination Place the water, ground turkey, rice, and rosemary into a large Dutch oven. Stir until the ground turkey is broken up and evenly distributed throughout the mixture; bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce heat to low and simmer for 20 minutes. Add the frozen vegetables, and cook for an additional 5 minutes. Remove from heat and cool. Refrigerate until using. Recipe by: redgirl Canine Casserole 8 CUPS DIY Homemade Dog Food Keep your dog healthy and fit with this easy peasy homemade recipe - it's cheaper than store-bought and chockfull of fresh veggies! 1½ Cups brown rice 1 Tbsp. olive oil 3 Pounds ground turkey 3 Cups baby spinach, chopped 2 Carrots, shredded 1 Zucchini, shredded ½ Cup peas, canned or frozen In a large saucepan of 3 cups water, cook rice according to package instructions; set aside. Heat olive oil in a large stockpot or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add ground turkey and cook until browned, about 3-5 minutes, making sure to crumble the turkey as it cooks. Stir in spinach, carrots, zucchini, peas and brown rice until the spinach has wilted and the mixture is heated through, about 3-5 minutes. Let cool completely. Once you ve made your batch, you can divide them up into single servings, note the date, and freeze it. When ready to serve, you can defrost it in the fridge overnight and nuke it for seconds. Now who knew that making dog food would be this easy? 1 Cup cooked chicken or turkey ½ Steamed vegetables (carrots, broccoli, squash, spinach, sweet potato) ½ Prepared brown rice 4 Tbsp. no-sodium broth Combine all ingredients. Bow Wow Brunch Here s a great recipe you can use from The BARK. 8 CUPS SERVING SIZE: 2 CUPS 3 cups cooked oatmeal 2 cups active-culture plain yogurt 2 cups cottage cheese 2 Tbsp. safflower oil 1 banana, peeled and coarsely mashed 1 apple or pear, cored and chopped 1 cup ripe mashed mango Combine all ingredients in a large bowl and mix thoroughly. 8 Pet Food Dogs 2 Pounds whole wheat flour 2 Tbsp. powdered kelp 1 Cup raw rolled oats ½ Cup olive oil 2 Cups water (or more) Bruno s Dog Biscuits Preheat oven to 300 F. Dump all ingredients into large electric mixer (or mix by hand) adding water, then if needed, more just enough to make a stiff dough. When well mixed, form into balls and place on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake 1½-2 hours, until they are very hard. Jake s Dog Biscuits 2 ½ Cups whole wheat flour ½ C up powdered milk ½ tsp. salt 1 tsp. brown sugar 6 Tbsp. margarine or shortening 1 Egg, beaten 3 Tbsp. liver powder ½ Cup Ice water Preheat oven to 350 F. In a large bowl, combine flour, powdered milk, salt and sugar. Cut in shortening; mix in egg, and add liver powder. Add ice water until mixture forms a ball. Pat out dough ½ think on a lightly oiled cookie sheet. Cut with any size cookie cutter and remove scraps. Bake 30 minutes. Cool before serving. Watson s Favorite Peanut Butter Oatmeal Dog Biscuits Watson, the Doberman sidekick in this series, loves these. 3 6 DOZEN (DEPENDING ON SIZE OF COOKIE CUTTER) 2 4 Cups whole wheat flour 1 2 Cups oatmeal ¼+ ½-¾ Cup peanut butter 1¼ 2½ Cups hot water Preheat oven to 350 F. Mix all ingredients together, adding more hot water if the dough is too stiff. Roll out the dough on a floured board to ¼ thick. Cut with a bone-shaped cookie cutter. Place 1 apart on greased cookie sheets. Bake until brown and crisp about 30 minutes. Biscuits should be refrigerated or frozen for long-term storage. 9 Pet Food Dogs Sneaky Pie s Dog Cookies 3 Cups whole wheat flour 1 Cup wheat germ 1 Cup bran flakes 1 Cup soy flour 1 Cup cornmeal 1 Cup grits 1 Tbsp. active dry yeast 1 Cup sunflower seeds, ground 1 Egg (or egg equivalent substitute) 1⅓ Cups broth or water ¼ Cup canola oil 1 Cup nonfat dry milk Preheat oven to 300 F. Combine all ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Roll or pat out to ¼- ½ thick. Cut with a dog-bone-shaped cookie cutter, or into 1x3 strips. Can expand and produce gas in the digestive system causing pain and possible rupture of the stomach or intestines. T 10

11 Pet Food Birds Make Your Own Suet for the Birds Suet is the perfect bird food recipe for the winter months when birds food sources dwindle. Suet is loved by nuthatches, woodpeckers, wrens, chickadees, cardinals, and most insecteating birds. You can use almost any seed or grain, mixed with beef fat, lard, or natural peanut butter. A basic suet combines equal parts of beef fat and assorted birdseed. Put it in a tuna or cat food can to chill (or freeze) until it s hard enough to hold its shape, then release it into a wire suet cage or sturdy mesh bag. For a fancier suet, add natural peanut butter to the mix. You can also bind cornmeal or oatmeal with natural peanut butter and spread it into holes drilled in a post or log. Birds also like dried fruits, so consider adding raisins, currants, apricots, or citron Here is a suet recipe from our archives: Suet Cake 2 parts melted fat (beef fat or lard) 2 parts yellow cornmeal 1 part natural peanut butter Michael Smith, Our friend above was afraid we were going to leave the birds out of this collection, so here, belatedly, is a pages to cover this area. While there are very few pet birds in the building, we thought the possibilities of bird feeding were possible with this section. Getsu Shinn and Evelyn... both have pea patches up the hill, and the pea patching community has become interested in the birds visiting their plot of ground... so maybe there are other places where we might do our part to feed the birds... Mix all ingredients together and cook for a few minutes. Pour into small containers (tuna fish cans are good), and refrigerate or freeze until needed. Mixture can also be stuffed into 1-inch holes drilled in small logs to hang from trees. The recipe can be made all year long as long as you accumulate fat. Fasten containers securely to trees or feeders. Enjoy watching your feathered friends warm up by your window!
