1 Room in Your Heart We Are Animal Guardians Annual Appeal 2014 The Room program (and WAG volunteers!) got a workout over the past year. We had a few animals that needed a ton of veterinary care, such as Baby, an adorable Persian who has an enzyme deficiency, and Black Jack, a fantastic young cat who came to us with a septic leg; our great vets saved his life and his leg, and he ll be available for adoption soon. Many of our dogs get professional training to insure a smooth transition when they are adopted; Joey, a Chihuahua, is in training now. We also placed several longstanding Room animals, which is always a huge thrill. So this leaves us with twelve Room animals, and it s a mystery to us why we have not been able to place them. They re all healthy. There are only a couple with minor, easily managed behavior problems, such as pulling on the leash. In each case, we have placed similar animals. So why are these animals taking so long to find homes? For example, people were lining up last year to adopt a Boxer with behavior issues that was a huge training project, but we couldn t talk a single person into even considering our similar-to-a-boxer American Bulldog Triton, who is trained and would become an instant member of the family. We placed several cats that looked like Sumo wrestlers, yet no one is interested in our pleasantly pudgy (and extremely loving) Emma. We find great homes for many small cats, yet we can t find a home for our adorable and affectionate Chessie, our cover animal, for love or money. What s the deal? We are so grateful to you, our many donors, who allow us to take such great care of the animals in immediate need as well as our animals in foster care while we search for families for them. Your support is crucial and very much appreciated. And if you are looking for an animal to adopt, or know of someone who is looking, please consider one of these great animals. Not only will you get a fantastic pet, you will have the additional satisfaction of knowing you helped an animal that really needed a home. Chessie If good things come in small packages, then Chessie must be the best cat in the world, because she is about as small as a cat can get: 3.5 lbs. This 6-year-old tiger is a Munchkin, a purebred breed of cat whose name says it all. For this girl, life is all about cuddling, and at her size, she is perfect arm candy. Although she isn t a pest about it, this sweetheart, whose foster mother calls a dear heart, would love an owner who likes to give and receive affection. She also likes to play, especially with toys that dangle from a string, and she will go to her new home with her favorite donut bed. This little girl needs to be an only pet in an adult home. The Room in Your Heart program takes care of our special cases. Many of the animals that come to WAG are sick or injured and need special veterinary care. Room funds pay those vet bills. The Room program also supports the animals that take a little longer to place, such as the animals in this flyer. PLEASE USE THE ENCLOSED FORM AND GIVE AS GENEROUSLY AS YOU CAN! Your support is crucial for these animals that need help the most. More pictures of all of the animals in this flyer, as well as all of the animals WAG has for adoption, can be found on our Petfinder page: and now on our Facebook page: PLEASE USE THE ENCLOSED FORM AND GIVE AS GENEROUSLY AS YOU CAN. 2 TY This 12-year-old Boxer-Shepherd cross is one of the biggest characters we ve ever had at WAG. This fantastic dog loves life and has a wonderful curiosity about the world around him. He loves all people, and greetings are ceremonial occasions for him: he insists on shaking hands, first one, and then the other, with everyone he meets. He has the most expressive face, which can go from stately solemnity to mischief in a heartbeat. It is matched by his ever-wagging stubby tail, which makes his whole butt wag. His age notwithstanding, this is still a powerful, active dog who is up for anything you want to do: We are looking for someone who will make him a part of their life, so he can go for a walk (he still needs regular exercise), run errands in the car (he loves the car), and take a nap with his person. Well-behaved, Ty has great house manners and is happy to chew a bone at your feet if you are busy. Ty is in perfect health, and we hope to find someone soon who will give him the active life he still craves. Although not aggressive, other dogs just interfere with his time with his people, so he really would prefer a home where he s the only dog. He s a card-carrying member of the cat-chasing club, so no cats. He s great with kids, although he is a bit boisterous and powerful for very young kids. LUCKY Are you looking for a great companion cat who loves to snuggle? Then this is your Lucky day! This gorgeous red tabby is the ultimate people person. He really could be a store greeter, because he loves everyone, even complete strangers. When it comes to his family, this affectionate 11-year-old is one of the kissiest cats ever: ears and noses are favorite targets. Hugging is one of his favorite activities. However, he isn t a pest; he lets you do your thing when you re busy. But all you need to do is call him over, and he s ready for snuggle time. Lucky is also beautiful: long and lean, he has the most unbelievable polydactylous, New England paws, with multiple extra toes on all four feet. We ve had trouble placing him, because despite his outgoing personality, he doesn t show well so will take a few weeks to settle in when he is placed. He likes dogs, as long as they don t chase him, but wants to be an only cat. No young kids for Lucky, who has never been around them. JAXX This 3-year-old male Rottweiler is a bit of a goof with a lot of pup left in him; he loves to play and is eager to please. He is affectionate and enjoys doing things with his person: he loves going for walks and playing, adores the water and canoes, and does well with car rides. He will thrive in the home of an active family that includes him in their lives and activities. Jaxx is crate trained, has had basic training, and is good about basic commands, but gets distracted easily when out in the world so could use a bit more training. He is in perfect health. Jaxx loves kids: his current family has a special needs autistic grandson who plays with Jaxx, and there has never been an issue. Although Jaxx is OK with other dogs he meets if introduced properly, he would prefer to live as an only pet. He has never lived with a cat. WAG needs your support and an easy way to help us is by spreading the word! All shelters are not the same, and WAG prides itself on taking special care of both its animals and adoptive families. Please tell people about us and share why this organization is unique. WAG is committed to matching you with an animal that s a good fit for you and your family. WAG welcomes applications from senior citizens. We formally assess all animals, both to insure that the animal is adoptable and to help us learn about the animal so it can be matched with an appropriate home. We care for all animals in foster homes. WAG takes on the care and placement of older animals. We will not euthanize any adoptable animal. We provide full veterinary care for all animals before placement, including treating injuries or illnesses, testing for communicable diseases (including heartworm and tickborne diseases in dogs and Feline Leukemia, FIP, and FIV in cats), testing for and treating internal and external parasites, and spaying or neutering. We do not import animals from out of state; we focus on dogs and cats in need in our local community. We support you with any problems you may have for the life of the pet. We will take back any pet without question, regardless of how long the pet has been in the adoptive home. We are here for an animal s entire life no matter what. Please donate as generously as you can so we can continue to help the animals in need in our community.

3 RIPLEY If dogs can have theme songs, then we are sure that Ripley s would be Girls Just Want to Have Fun. We have several nicknames for this wonderful Husky-Whippet cross. One is she is our Little Playgirl, because Ripley loves all toys and will play anytime, anywhere, with anyone, or by herself. As her foster mother says, Ringling Brothers has nothing on Ripley for sheer entertainment value. We also call her Cupcake, simply because she is the sweetest, most wonderful dog to live with. In the house, this reasonably sized 35-lb. girl is well-behaved and loves to be with her people: if you re on the couch, she s on the couch. If you re on the bed, she s on the bed with you. The thing that s great about this 9-year-old is she is energetic without being hyperactive: she is just a pleasure to live with. She has this wonderful joie de vivre and will do best with a family that makes her an active part of their life. She loves all people, but she worships kids of all ages and would like nothing better than to go to a home with kids. She is in perfect health. She is ready to go! She does best when she gets daily exercise, whether it s a nice long on-leash walk or some time in a fenced yard playing with her person and her toys. Ripley needs to be an only pet, as she doesn t like other animals. She is fine when you are going for a walk, as long as other dogs don t get in her face, but she does have a prey drive with small furry animals so wants to chase cats and bunnies. DR. SEUSS Some cats like to play. Some like to be carried around. Dr. Seuss likes to relax. This mellow, declawed, doublepawed boy is very sweet and affectionate. However, he is totally undemanding and is OK if you have to do something else. It s OK because this middle-aged cat has turned relaxation into an art form. His foster mother says he is not a high-speed unit, and you can see where she gets that when you watch him relax in a window (he loves to lay on his back so the sun can warm his belly), on a cat bed, on your bed, or, his favorite relaxation spot of all, your lap. He loves to snuggle up on the couch or recliner with you, so is a great movie companion. Playing with toys requires too much energy. Dr. Seuss gets along with female cats that ignore him, but he cannot be placed in a home with dogs or male cats. No young kids, simply because he has never lived with them (and they would interrupt his relaxation sessions). PIPER Although we have no idea what this 3-year-old s parentage is, she looks and acts mostly like a Lab mix. Piper is a sweetheart who is a true people person: She has never met a stranger, and if you let her, Piper will sit next to you or on you, as cuddling is one of her favorite things in the world. Piper has a lot of energy and loves to exercise. She enjoys going for walks/runs and exploring in the woods. She loves sticks, both to carry around and to play fetch with you. She loves the water, too. Piper is fully trained and has gone through many classes, so she is a complete pleasure to live with. She has been surrendered by her heartbroken family because she does not like children, so her owners, who have just had a baby, don t think it s fair for her to live with one. Piper gets along with a few male dogs. She doesn t like cats. help us to care for and place these four-legged friends. WAG is all-volunteer, so all donations go directly to animal care.

4 ... and there s more: teddy & LATCHES We have cats that we call our Let Us Entertain You cats. We have cats where it s all about the snuggling. With Teddy and Latches, you get the best of both worlds. First, the entertainment: These two cats, abandoned in separate incidents, ended up in the same foster home and bonded TEDDY like brothers. Now they are inseparable, and their foster mother swears that they function as one being. They do everything by committee, and she reports that you can watch them get in a huddle to put their heads together to figure out their next move. When they are not planning, they are extremely playful and love toys; watching them play together is a riot. Climbing is another favorite activity, and it s not unusual to find them hanging from the top of their 8-foot cat tree like monkeys. They spend their down time sleeping intertwined on a sunny spot on the bed. When it comes to snuggling, here is where their very different personalities come to the fore: Teddy is definitely the front man of the pair: a rare male pearly calico (calicos are almost always female), Teddy is rather large, about 20 lbs. As far as he s concerned, that just means that there is more of him to love, as he adores being picked up, kissed, hugged, whatever. This 7-year-old is charming and loving. Latches is a more normal size, with a gorgeous slategrey coat, and when you want a quiet moment of love with your cat, this 6-year-old is your guy: he is very affectionate with people he knows and loves to be petted and to quietly sit next to you while you are LATCHES reading or watching a movie. (Teddy, on the other hand, would prefer to be in your lap.) They are the perfect tag team to meet all of your cat requirements. These boys must be the only pets in an adult home. SOOKIE This 11-year-old declawed dilute tortoiseshell was a wellcared-for only pet for most of her life, but recently she was placed in a home where other cats terrorized her, so she was then surrendered to WAG. As you can imagine, this has been a trying time for Sookie, but she is starting to come out of her shell, and we can see that she is a sweet, affectionate, wonderful cat. We re looking for a quiet, adult home that will give her time to settle in. Once she does, we are confident that she is going to be a great companion. Although she might get along with an extremely mellow dog or other cat that ignored her, we think she d prefer to be an only pet. Definitely no young kids for this quiet girl. EMMA Emma is not merely a cat: she wants to be your partner in life. This 7-year-old is one of the most people-oriented, sweetest cats we have ever had at WAG. An easy-going girl, she wants to hang out with you, but she manages to be near you without ever being in the way. When you want some affection, she is ready, willing, and able: she is up for all of the hugs, kisses, snuggling, and lap time you can dish out. Carry her around, give her belly rubs it s all good: She firmly believes that cats or people can t get too much affection. Her perfect match would be someone who wants to make their cat a big part of their life. What would be even better, as far as Emma is concerned, is if you also have a friendly dog, because she adores dogs: when she s not snuggling with you, chances are you will find her curled up in a sunny spot with your dog. While all people and dogs are great, she would prefer to be an only cat. We Are Animal Guardians PO Box 572 Weare, NH (603) wearewag@gsinet.net

5 Home At Last: Room Alumni Congratulations to the many formerly Room animals that are now Room alums! Marty our world-famous Labrahuahua Libby senior calico music lover Delilah Bullmastiff-Bulldog cross Jade Snowshoe Siamese princess Johnny solid black cuddlebunny Angel black-and-white angora aerialist Maggie Mae senior Jack Russell Terrier pistol (photo) TRITON We think this description of American Bulldogs fits our purebred Triton to a T: Protective, not aggressive Willing and able Hard working Loyal and loving Strong and powerful Rough and tough Just plain awesome. This magnificent 3-year-old loves everyone and can be quite the clown. But this dog wants more than anything to attach himself deeply to a family of his own. As for the willing and able and hard working parts, that s our Triton, who was named after the rocket: he is a vibrant dog that needs plenty of physical exercise. But this very smart and well-behaved dog also needs mental exercise: he LOVES to be trained. He has been through two levels of obedience training and excelled, but he will do best if he is always given jobs to do. It doesn t matter what he learns even tricks are great as long as his mind is kept busy. He will thrive in a home where he is actively made a part of the family. Although Triton is not aggressive with other dogs or cats, he wants to be an only pet. He loves children, but he is too powerful for young kids. The color printing of this document was made possible thanks to a generous in-kind donation from our printer. Design and production provided by Tricia Miller, MillerWorks. Maggie Mae s new owner says it best: I have to smile when I think that Maggie Mae wasn t adopted for several months before I got her, because she had the easiest transition into my house ever: she walked in, and it was as if she d always lived here. She was perfectly trained I have never had a dog that was so well trained. She bonded to me instantly. She has helped put my heart back together after losing my Newfoundland. I live in a close-knit community, and all of my friends have totally fallen in love with her. Maggie was a therapy dog in her previous home, and she is now a therapy dog for all of us. She is a doll, and I am so grateful I have her. Good Memories The following Room animals passed away last year and are missed by their foster families: Yala very communicative Siamese Boris gigantic orange Persian cross Boston Bunny house bunny extraordinaire Meeko tiger-and-white shorthair sweetie-pie Buck sweet, loving, and easy-going Labradoodle Making a Difference, One Animal at a Time Our Mission Founded in 1996, WAG is an all-volunteer rescue and adoption organization based in central New Hampshire. We are dedicated to providing humane care and shelter for abandoned, abused, and unwanted animals; finding them suitable homes and increasing public awareness of responsible pet ownership. While we work hard to make each placement permanent, we know that things can change in people s lives. WAG will take back any pet without question, regardless of how long the pet has been in the adoptive home. We are here for an animal s entire life no matter what. 6 Room in Your Heart We Are Animal Guardians Annual Appeal 2014 It s been another busy and successful year for WAG. In 2014, we placed about 100 animals in loving homes, and, as always, it makes everything worthwhile when we see the happy faces after a successful placement. Thanks to our continued careful screening and foster-first program, we are maintaining our 99% successful placement rate. We are happy to report that we placed a record number of Room animals last year, which was definitely the highlight of the year for us. That allowed us to help even more animals in need, making the Room program more important than ever. So we are asking you to donate as generously as you can to this annual appeal, which directly supports Room In Your Heart. We continue to work hard on behalf of our animals. This year, we continued to expand our communications to help get the word out. We still have all of our adoptable animals listed on Petfinder, and our Facebook page gets more Likes every week. We now also list our animals on com to try to increase the number of people that see our pets for adoption. We have placed many more notebooks containing pictures and descriptions of our animals in veterinarian offices and other pet-related businesses. We have found more local newspapers that generously allow us to place ads. We are getting more calls and are placing more animals, which is enormously gratifying, but it s a slow process. When we find these animals great homes and add more wonderful people to the WAG community, it is all worth it. But finding great homes takes time. Currently, it costs us about $250 a year to care for a cat, and $500 for a dog for basic care (food, veterinary services, grooming, etc.). WAG has no paid staff; we are all volunteers. Your gift goes directly towards animal care. The more money we take in, the more animals we can help. Please use the attached form to make as generous a donation Joey the Chihuahua is in training, thanks to the Room program. as you can, or you can donate online at As always, you can pick an animal to support from the enclosed flyer, or you can make a general donation to the program and let us use it where it is needed most. WAG qualifies for most employee matching gift programs, too. As always, your gift of any size is greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for your support. Sincerely, Dave Bowers, President P.S.
