2 Why is a pre-purchase exam important? The horse who is sound in the arena but turns out to be subtly lame on hard ground and to have navicular disease... The horse who has a small lump in the flank that the seller's vet said was not worrisome but turns out to be an aggressive type of sarcoid that requires a costly surgery to remove... The horse who turns out to have progressive cataracts undetectable to the lay person's eye that will likely eventually lead to blindness... The horse whose sellers say they have had regular dentals but turns out to need significant dental work for a badly imbalanced mouth... The horse who does not have an obvious hind end lameness but when veterinary flexion tests are performed goes off very lame and has significant hock arthritis that will require life long injections to keep him sound... The mare purchased to be a broodmare who has a cervical tear from her last foaling that will not allow her to become pregnant in the future... The horse who turns out to have a heart murmur which could affect his athletic potential and life expectancy... The horse who when a vet approaches to do a routine vaccination turns out to be a dangerous and violent needle-phobe... These are a handful of real examples of horses encountered in our practice who have been purchased without a prepurchase exam and turned out to have significant health, soundness and behavioral conditions. The 2 most common reasons we hear people have for foregoing a prepurchase are: 1) The buyer knows the seller/trainer personally and are confident they would never sell them a sick/lame/ill-behaved horse *Most of the time it is true that the seller has no ill intentions. However, oftentimes they themselves are not aware of conditions the horse may have. It is generally not a wool being pulled over the eyes situation, but an honest and innocent mistake. *Sometimes people are not who you think they are and really just want to sell the horse. It is always disappointing when people we trust are dishonest but the only one losing is the buyer when the horse ends up being a poor investment. 2) The horse is free/not worth much and the investment is not worth it. *The truth is a horse is worth as much as you would spend on him to keep him happy, healthy and sound. For most people this limit is higher than they think it is and nobody wants to acquire a sick or lame horse no matter how cheap it is. It is true that there are some minor conditions that can be managed with proper maintenance, after all no horse is perfect but knowing what the buyer is getting into is very valuable. What is a prepurchase exam and what is included in a routine prepurchase exam? A prepurchase exam is when a buyer hires a veterinarian to perform a thorough evaluation of a horse they are considering buying. The doctor works for the buyer and the buyer owns all the information discovered during the exam. The very thorough exam is designed to provide the buyer with the most possible information about the horse so they can make an informed buying decision. It includes: * Nose to tail physical exam including: -oral/dental exam -eye exam -evaluation of heart, lungs, upper airway and GI sounds to detect abnormalities or potential problems -hoof evaluation including angle measurements and shoeing evaluation -skin evaluation including all lumps and bumps -conformation evaluation -body condition score, weight tape and height measurement -evaluation for previous surgeries such as colic surgery and denerving of the feet, etc. *Behavior assessment and evaluation of personality to make recommendation on if the horse is appropriate for his intended uses * Neurologic exam to evaluate for potential neurologic conditions * Complete lameness evaluation including flexion tests of all four limbs and an evaluation on soft and hard ground * A typed complete report on all veterinary findings will be presented to the buyer after the exam is completed * Common additional requests from buyers include x-rays of feet, hocks, fetlocks and stifles, blood tests to look for drugs such as bute which would alter the soundness of the horse at the time of evaluation or to evaluate all organ function to detect early signs of disease. What a prepurchase exam is NOT: * It is not a pass/fail test. It is a common misunderstanding that a horse can pass or fail a prepurchase exam. The goal of the prepurchase exam is to give the potential buyer the most information about the horse. No horse is perfect and every buyer's threshold for imperfections is different. It is ultimately up to the buyer to decide whether or not to buy the horse based on the information the veterinarian has provided. The veterinarian cannot tell you whether or not to buy the horse. * It is not a guarantee of the future health and soundness of the horse. The veterinarian does the best he/she can to give you all the information about the horse in a given moment in time. A prepurchase does not insure the horse will not have health issues in the near or distant future but does help reduce the risk! Acquiring a new horse is one of the most exciting experiences for us horse people. We love to see our clients excited about their new addition and we love to help them make the best possible choices for a happy and healthy future together! In addition he was Reappointed, for a second term, to the Cattle and Horse Welfare Committee, the Drug Review Committee and the Audit and Finance Committee.
