1 JUNE / JULY 2018 M ULTIPLE ACHIEVEMENTS FOR LOCAL PONY CLUB MEMBERS A first for Piopio, Jenny Bevege achieved the ultimate in Pony Club competition in winning the individual AI title at the NZ Pony Club championships in Masterton in April. Jenny had clear cross country and show jumping rounds to finish on her very good dressage score of Representing Waikato, Jenny and Storm Harris (team captain), also from Piopio, were the top AI pair and Waikato were 2 nd in the competition behind Canterbury. Clay Harris competed in the DC (under 17yrs) section and unfortunately his horse couldn t compete in the show jumping due to lameness. Gus Nelson from Aria was our other local in the Waikato team and came 3 rd in the training (95cm) section. His story is amazing as he was the only available rider to qualify no Gus, no Waikato team. He went from strength to strength on a relatively new mount and from helping out to 3 rd place. Molly Nelson, reserve for the team (DC) competed as an individual with clear cross country and show Bi Monthly Community Newsletter covering Piopio, Aria & Mahoenui Districts jumping rounds. 3 A ERIAL SPREADING IS A COMPLICATED BUSINESS. Everybody needs to get their product on when the timing and season is right to ensure they get the best efficiencies out of their fertiliser spend. But there are times when the stars don t align and much to everybody s frustration, the plane is grounded and the spread is delayed. A good way to think of the aerial spreading process is to consider it like a giant jigsaw puzzle. Pieces of the puzzle include the weather, maintenance (planned or unplanned) staff, fertiliser, transport and finally infrastructure. If these pieces don t slot together seamlessly then the plane may not get the chance to fly. While some of these influences are beyond our control (like the weather!!!!) there are definitely some things that can be done on farms that can help ensure fertiliser can be spread both safely and more efficiently. One of these things is ensuring that the strip and access has been kept maintained. Strip clear, free of animals, cowpats and debris. Smooth enough to drive family car on. Avoid putting cattle on strips especially over winter months Bin clear, weeds cleared from inside. Area in front of bin metaled and pot holes filled. A cover on hand. Farm tracks metaled, grass scraped off to expose metal in time to dry out. Soft areas cleared. Tip off area metaled allowing trucks to unload efficiently and safely. JULES TAITOKO MESSAGE FROM MATT WRENN BUILDING Recently my wife Angela and I made the decision to move to the South Island and begin a new adventure with our children. This hasn t been an easy decision as Piopio is an amazing community and we have thoroughly enjoyed living and working here over the last 10+ years. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all my clients for the building projects they have employed me to do in that time. I have greatly enjoyed the variety of work that building in a rural setting brings, and I have also enjoyed working alongside such genuine and loyal clients. I am now fully booked until we leave on July 14th. We will be holding a farewell at the Piopio Volunteer Fire Brigade on July 7th. Please feel free to come along anytime from 3pm onwards (cash bar available). MATT WRENN Page 6

7 P IOPIO PLAYCENTRE has been busy finishing a major project over the last few months. Work on the bike track began in January and we just held a small blessing on the 14 th May to complete it. Projects like these don t just happen, we have had tremendous support and would like to thank Piopio Community and Districts Charitable Trust, Trust Waikato and The Lines Company for their generous donations and Matt Wrenn and Aaron Bevege for their expertise in getting the track concreted. ETTER BROADBAND FOR MOKAUITI B Wireless Dynamic s a local wireless internet service provider has installed a solar powered POP (Point of Presence) grid in the Mokauiti area. It is located overlooking the Mokauiti Hall at the end of Kakara Road. What this means for families living in this area is high speed, reliable internet and access to the fun things that can be done online, such as using Skype, watching Netflix, and using Spotify to download your favourite tunes. The biggest thankyou needs to go to the Mums and Dads in the community that have spent their weekends at the centre getting the track finished for their children. We have had a couple of working bees and there has been a lot of organising and jobs to complete. Piopio Playcentre is thriving with parents and kiddies coming from as far as Mokau, Mapiu, Kopaki and the Mangaotaki Valley. There is a real need in our widely spread community for a place where families and children can connect and learn together through play. Piopio Playcentre provides resources and supports both child and parent education with the aim of building self -esteem, a sense of belonging, creativity and life skills. Our goal for the bike track was to reinforce some road safety concepts for our tamariki while they do what they do best play. We have also had a new truck built in the playground with thanks to (Alex Robertson Fencing and Piopio Community and Districts Charitable Trust), a new colour scheme for our exterior (Tony Williams), a new umbrella over the sandpit (Waikato District Council) and new books and puzzles (The Mustard Seed). It has been a busy time, and it is a joy to see so many happy, engaged preschoolers getting the most out of their day. We are very lucky and Piopio Playcentre is a real asset to the community. HILLARY MORGAN PRESIDENT PIOPIO PLAYCENTRE Customers connect via a dish installed by Wireless Dynamics, onto a structure such as a roof that has line of site to the POP. Occasionally line of site is not achievable but the team at Wireless Dynamics are renowned for being creative in their installations. A variety of plans are available ranging from upfront installation costs & no fixed term, to a 24-month plan with no installation fees. Data prices start from $59.90 for 10GB, and each data plan has rollover data, so if you don t use it, you don t loose it. Page 7

8 IOPIO COMMUNITY P POOL UPDATE What a great summer! It seemed to go on and on, which meant we had fantastic public swimming numbers 1,500 in fact! Keeping the pool running would not be possible without all of our amazing helpers. A special thanks to our lifeguards of Mandi Butler and Laurel Muraahi, our cleaner and chemical lady Sarah Good and James Hicks our handy person. Over the winter the Trust will be revamping the changing rooms and toilets, making our pool a much more user friendly facility come summer. We have also welcomed three new committee members Yvette Ronaldson, Rachael Laver and Kimberly S PORTS ZONE IGNITES BENEFITS FOR WIDER COMMUNITY The vision behind the concept of an outdoor multipurpose sports zone at Piopio College is to keep youth engaged and ensuring students have access to activities that will enhance their wellbeing, both physically and mentally and support their academic progress. The number of community currently using the school grounds for sports, fitness training and recreational use is extensive and the school believes enhancing an area to benefit both students and other community groups, is a beneficial outcome. Providing a structure to engage youth and keep them stimulated will ensure this community is a vibrant place to live, creating a hub for rural families to stay in the community. We believe this is in line with the Waitomo District Council vision to attract new people to our community and provide sporting and social opportunities. The purpose of creating a fitness trail zone / adventure playground area is to encourage physical activity in a safe area whilst creating a social hub Cody. The committee will work with the Trust to continue to ensure the pool remains a valuable asset for the Piopio community. The pool relies heavily on community funding and sponsorship to keep it going. So we must thank The Lines Company for their on-going sponsorship, the Community Organisation Grants Scheme who cover the cost of our lifeguards and Waitomo District Council discretionary grant for assisting with our fundraising event. FINALLY, A HUGE THANK YOU TO LYNNE RAUPUTU. SADLY LYNNE HAS RESIGNED FROM THE TRUST. WE THANK HER FOR ALL OF HER HARD WORK OVER THE YEARS. L IFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS were presented to three stalwarts in our community by Waitomo District Council Mayor, Brian Hanna recently. Snow and June Nicol were recognized for their outstanding contribution and commitment. Through their businesses and personally the duo have supported schools, sports clubs and more recently tourists into our community at the POP Tui Park. Snows passion for sports led him to playing representative hockey before he took on numerous roles coaching within the Aria and Piopio Clubs. Since the early 1970 s he was an active member of the Piopio Lions Club and later became a life member. He is also a life member at the Piopio for the wider community and youth. Collaboratively the school hope to gain support from the community to bring this project to fruition. Piopio College in recent years have proven successful relationships with key assets within the community by creating Memorandum of Understandings between the Piopio Community Recreation Centre (Community Gym) and the Piopio Community Swimming Pool Trust. In support of the fitness trail zone, the Community Recreation Centre also believe the concept is a good fit with their own vision and are supportive of this development. The fitness zone area will border the Recreation Centre and will provide an outdoor active zone for students and community users. Piopio College Board of Trustees support the proposal to create an area whereby a flexible and multipurpose sport zone can be achieved for fitness and training. Ultimately the PTA (Parent Teacher Association) would like to see the fitness zone link with the netball courts and resurfacing development with flood lights also. Cosmopolitan Club. Snow and June continue to support all areas of the community and are very generous in helping those in need. Pat Finlayson is recognized for long term service to the Anglican Church and is an active member of the Parish community. As a longstanding member of the Piopio community, Pat is a familiar face in the Garden Circle club, Church occasions and numerous other groups. Pat is also a founding member in the King Country Hunt Club and the Mustard Seed Opportunity Shop. Pat will continue to be a respected resident in the Piopio community as her involvement continues endlessly. Fundraising is underway and the group appreciate the support and sponsorship given from the Waitomo District Council, King Country Energy Trust and the Mustard Seed Opportunity shop to date. Although funding is limited in schools for such projects both the BOT and PTA strongly believe youth still need to have tactile and active play as part of their well-being and development. Having a permanent adventure recreation area will encourage youth in being active, improving dexterity and selfmanagement, participation and sharing as part of a community. Encouraging youth to risk take through active play enables them to learn within a secure environment and can improve learning outcomes also. The PTA have several planned fundraisers and welcome any support or contributions towards this new community hub. If you are a past student, family or business in the district, and wish to provide support in any way, please piopiocollegepta@gmail.com or Donna Page 8

EM: FOURIENZ@GMAIL.COM // MB: LASKAN ADVENTURES - A A LIFETIME REALISATION 25 February 9 March 2018 My wife Diane and I set off for Alaska for the realisation of Diane s wish of many years to see the beginning of the historic dog sled race, the Iditarod from Anchorage to Nome, a thousand miles in length, a test of fitness for dogs and their mushers. The twelve hour flight to San Francisco and then onto Vancover in Canada was broken up by a stopover in Seattle before arriving into snow. A tour of Vancouver including a visit to the aquarium where we saw sea otters, sea lions and a great variety of fish, and also one South African penguin, was followed by a tour through Stanley Park and back through China Town, which was very informative and entertaining. We then flew to Seattle, along the coast to Anchorage and before long we could see The Great Land with snow covered mountains. The sights FULL CLIP 2 hours - From $65 Warm bath, warm blow dry, comb/brush, tidy face, feet, tail and sanitary area, coat styling of choice and nail clip. BATH AND TIDY 90 minutes - From $55 Warm bath, warm blow dry, comb/ brush, tidy of face, feet, tail and sanitary area and nail clip. BATH AND DRY 45 minutes - From $40 Warm bath, warm blow dry, comb/ brush and nail clip. Other services: Flea and Nail treatments and Matted Dog groom on route to our Hotel were amazing, with a visit to the Musk Ox Wool shop offering garments made from Kiviut, which is harvested from a Musk Ox, and processed by native Alaskans during the hunting season. The local furriers also offer a great variety of furs and fortunately no endangered species were in sight. Next a visit to Alyeska Ski Resort, which proved popular for young skiers. Moving along to the Cook Inlet and the Turnagain arm, on the Seward highway, history suggests Captain Cook sailed the North West passage in this area but of course he was disappointed. We as New Zealanders were able to inform the other travellers of Captain Cooks more successful sea journeys. While in the area we visited a Conservation and Wildlife Rescue Centre and saw Wood Bison, Musk Oxen, Caribou, Wolves and rescued Porcupine. On our sights, seeing dozens of small aircraft laid up for the winter, highlighted the importance of their service in the Alaskan back country also. Midway through our journey the excitement of the Iditarod dog sled race in down town Anchorage was a high point of our holiday. The race was revived in 1973 to encourage the breeding and the use of the Alaskan Husky which was threatened by the universal change over to snow machines. The dogs average 100 miles over a 24 hour period and have numerous vet checks which take out any considered not fit to continue and are flown back to Anchorage to await their owners. The race began with 67 teams, 12 dogs to a team, leaving every two minutes. The scale of the event was impressive as the main street is closed off with spectators on both sides. The following day, teams are trucked up to Willow, about 80 kilometres north to open country, where the main race begins. Tame reindeer are also released to celebrate the opening run. We were fortunate to be hosted by some Alaskan friends, Doug and Amy Modig whom showed us some Native Alaskan Arts and Craft works. There were a lot of Walrus Ivory artefacts made into carvings reflecting the native culture, however these were somewhat restricted by export regulations. This time was valuable and very insightful. The finale of our journey was taking a sled dog experience through the Willow district, behind three teams of eight dogs and a very competent lady musher was breath-taking and bumpy at times. Passing native livestock and wild moose on the road sides can only be compared to the size of a horse and we understand can be very aggressive and demanding when hungry. This entire journey was a lifetime opportunity and we hope you enjoy these few words of our experience. PETER AND DIANNE HOLBROOK Page 10
