Cameras and Photographs A camera is a handy machine that can be both useful and fun. Many people use cameras to help them remember things. Some people take pictures of the things they have in their house so that they have a record of items that may be destroyed in a fire or storm. Cameras are useful to businesses as well. Photographs captured by cameras have become a modern form of art. Dramatic black and white prints hang in many museums and art galleries. The mark + is a symbol that tells you to add numbers together. A red light on a street is a symbol that tells a driver to stop. Taken as a whole, the American flag is the symbol of our nation. You know that when you say the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag, the flag stands for the nation. But each part of the flag the stripes, stars, and colors are also symbols that add their own meaning to the flag. Stripes are like rays of the sun, promising a new morning. There are thirteen stripes on the American flag. The stripes are a symbol of the first thirteen colonies that joined together to form a new nation the United States of America. Stars form patterns in the night sky. The flag has a pattern of fifty stars. The stars are a symbol of the fifty states the number of states that now make up the United States. The stars on the flag, like the fifty states, stand together to form a united nation. No single star can stand for any single state. Understanding what the colors symbolize, or stand for, is not easy. In 1777, the Continental Congress the lawmakers of the nation chose red, white, and blue for the colors of the flag. However, they left no written record of why they chose these colors. In 1782, the United States Congress selected the Great Seal of the United States. They stated the red on the seal stood for courage, the white stood for goodness, and the blue stood for justice. Many people today agree that the colors on the American flag also stand for these things. Flag makers through the ages have used many different shapes, colors, patterns, and pictures to honor their nation and people. Some flags have designs of real or imaginary animals. A lion suggests the courage of a great leader. A dragon is a symbol of the strength of many soldiers. Plants such as a cypress tree or oak tree stand for the strength and courage of the people of a nation. Colors might suggest a quality, such as goodness or love of one s country. A flag and its design show what qualities such as bravery, freedom, or patriotism the people of a group or a nation feel are most important. So, as you study a nation s flag, you also learn about its people.

It had started to rain shortly before the adults left, but Karin did not pay much attention to it at first. Soon the thunder began to boom, shaking the house with its roar. Lightning was flashing everywhere and Kelly was a little frightened. The lights went out, but Karin got the old lantern from the camping equipment, and the girls had enough light to comfort them. Rain pelted the house for over three hours, coming down harder than Karin had ever seen in all her twelve years. The wind whipped around the house, bending the smaller trees until their tops almost touched the ground. Still, Karin showed no signs of fear as she played games and joked with her sister. The thunder moved on, leaving the house in a peaceful kind of quiet with only the rain beating on the roof. Suddenly Karin became aware of a low rumbling noise. She looked out the window and could see that the creek near the house had pushed over the banks and was rushing madly past the driveway. Branches and other debris were swiftly rushing by as the water came up even higher. Karin had never seen the creek look so angry. If the water kept rising, it wouldn t be long before the creek reached their front door! For the first time, Karin was really frightened. Spotted Cats Several members of the cat family have spotted fur. Do you know the difference between a leopard, a jaguar, and a cheetah? From a distance they may appear somewhat similar. Examined at closer range, however, they are clearly different cats. They differ in various ways, including where they live, how big they are, how they move and hunt, and how their fur is marked. Of all the big cats in the wild, the true leopard is found across the largest area. Leopards live in much of Asia and Africa. A leopard grows to be from 3 to 6 feet long, with an added 3 feet of tail. Leopards are skilled climbers that can hunt monkeys in trees. They can also lie and wait to pounce on passing prey. When food sources are scarce, they might eat fruit, field mice, and large insects. Leopard spots are not actually solid spots; they are broken circles. The jaguar is native to the Americas. Its natural range is from the southern United States to northern Argentina, with the largest concentration of jaguars being in Brazil and Central America. The beauty and power of the jaguar inspired worship among ancient peoples. It measures between 3 and 6 feet long without the tail, which adds another 1 ½ to 2 ½ feet. Possessing a large head and body, the jaguar has legs that are shorter and thicker than a leopard s. Jaguars are excellent climbers and can also swim well. They dine on a variety of land, tree, and water creatures. Their fur can be a vivid yellow color or a rusty shade; their spots are called rosettes. Each rosette is large and black, consisting of a middle spot with a circle of spots around it. Most cheetahs live in the wilds of Africa. There are also some in Iran and northwestern Afghanistan. The cheetah s head is smaller than the leopard s, and its body is longer. This cat is built for speed. Its legs are much longer than the leopard s, allowing it to run at speeds of up to 70 miles per hour! This incredible ability helps the cheetahs catch their dinner, which is usually an unfortunate antelope. A cheetah s spots are simply black spots, not rosettes or circles. Other spotted cats include the smaller ocelot, mainly of Central and South America, and the lynx or bobcat, mainly of North America. What all of these cats have in common is that they are wild, powerful animals of tremendous grace and beauty.
