Ponderosa UK Stud Blue Riband Tarbes Race 1 st Open 1 st SE Section John Tyerman of Bracklesham Bay with Brackbay Star Our longest old bird race of the season, the Blue Riband Tarbes race saw another good entry with 156 members sending 662 birds. I absolutely love this race, as the reactions you get from members when you telephone to say how well they have done is fantastic. You can sense the feelings and emotions running through them and no two members are the same. The London and South East Classic Club were transporting our birds, for which we will be returning the favour for Bergerac. Ian and Rube contacted me on Friday morning to say that they had a clear line of flight but the weather at Tarbes was overcast and they were waiting for the sun to break through. Another telephone call came a little while later to say the birds were up and away at 7am. Thank you to Rube and Ian for a good race and for looking after the birds. We were forecast to have heavy rain sweeping in from the west early evening and once it did arrive I was feeling very doubtful for any day birds. By 8 o clock the weather had really closed in and I did wonder if any would arrive. I recalled last Friday when Dave Bullen and the others timed in from Pau International when the conditions were just as bad and thought it might be still possible. And possible it was with 4 gutsy pigeons making it home on the winning day. Brackbay Star made an appearance at 20:25:29 for John Tyerman of Bracklesham Bay to take 1 st Open 1 st SE Section. I have been keeping pigeons since my boyhood days in Dumfries, Scotland, as my late grandfather was a keen show homer enthusiast, and it was inevitable that I would become interested in our feathered friends. In these early days I had tipplers and tumblers, but when I married Linda in l968 we moved to Earlston Police Station in the Scottish Borders where I acquired a racing loft and a number of birds bred by my old friend the late Joe Newcombe. (Brother to Eddie now living in Malta) I also had the old Kirkpatrick based pigeons from the late John Carmichael, and birds from top Annan fanciers, through my colleague George Jackson. These were blended together and took some top positions in distance racing with the SNFC. We also had the first Scottish pigeon to be recorded from NFC Pau flying over 884 miles. A career move to Hong Kong meant no pigeons for 4 years but on my return we settled in Dorking, Surrey and again I had pigeons from John Carmichael, Andy Wilson and John Robertson all top Scottish fanciers. They were blended together over the years and in the mid nineties my good friend Ron Dodd secured some top stock for me from the late Eric Cannon. They too were blended in with my other family and over the years have been responsible for many top prizes in distance racing with the BICC and NFC. Pigeons like "Decimal Lady" who was 2nd open LSECC Bordeaux, "Dorking Supreme" who won 21st NFC Pau and then 22nd Classic Pau, "Rainbow lady" who won the Bromley Anglo-French open race from St Jean De Luz, timed 2nd morning just after 7am in pouring rain. The family excel at the longer races and over the years well over 150 prizes have been won in Classic, National and BICC International races.

When I moved to Bracklesham some 12 years ago many said I would regret moving close to the sea as it often means birds have to dog-leg back along the coast, and I have found this to be the case. However, good positions continue to be won from this location and my good "Barcelona Cock" has taken, 5th BICC & 7th BICC Barcelona and 15th BICC Perpignan flying to the lofts here. In the Barcelona Challenge, run by John and Lou McGee in France I had 6 birds to score in the first 31 home from Barcelona flying 625 miles. This season, due to serious health issues I changed from natural flying to a form of roundabout/celibacy with cocks and hens parted most of the time and only allowed together when they return from a race. They seem a lot fitter and have been raced/trained both on the North and South Road and losses have been minimal. I am a member of the Chichester NR Club and use the Southampton North Road Fed for training and am grateful to Sally Osborne and her helpers who basket up for me on Fed race nights at Havant. I am also a member of the Bognor and Chichester SR Club and fly with the Solent Federation, BICC, BBC and NFC. I never do too well in club events but this does not bother me and I much prefer the longer races. The Tarbes winner now named "Brackbay Star" is a two year old blue bar hen and she is bred down from all my best pigeons being a Grandaughter of the "Barcelona Cock." She was not raced as a young bird but flew 6 races on the North to 240 miles and was always consistent. This year she flew Leicester then turned South to Fougeres and two weeks ago was almost 10 hours on the wing from BBC Poitiers. She was one of 5 sent to Tarbes Classic and after the 7am lib into a North wind dropped onto the loft at 8-25pm. It was wet, very dull and the light was fading, so I had to put the loft lights on to encourage her to come in. She immediately flew to her box and her 10 year old mate and seemed none the worse for her 521 mile fly. John Tyerman with Brackbay Star I am one of the founder members of the London and South East Classic Club and a past President. I have also served on the NFC Committee for a number of years and am currently a Vice President and Race Advisor with the BICC having been a member since the early eighties. During the winter months I was quite ill and on a five month course of chemo and other drugs, so I would like to pay tribute to my wife Linda who religiously looked after and cleaned out the birds, as without her help I know I would not have been able to continue.

I would like to thank the marking team at Southampton for all their hard work and also the many fanciers/friends who have telephoned or ed me with congratulations on the Tarbes win. 2 nd Open 2 nd SE Section goes to Mr Anniversary Waltz himself Tony Leggatt of Havant. I would like to say a big thank you to all the well wishers and fanciers alike, taking the time to call me on the result of such a great race, and of course Congratulations to the winner Mr John Tyerman. My 2 nd Open 2 nd Section pigeon from Tarbes has been bred through my own Southwell distance strain and has now been named "Arnolds Star". He is a 3 year old chequer pied cock, who as a yearling landed me a 94 th Open 38 th Section A from Bordeaux BBC. He then went on to win 25 th Open 10 th South East Section Classic from Tarbes. This year he trained especially for this race and has done me proud. The Dam Honours: 43 rd /11 th Sec A Bordeaux BBC 81 st /28 th Sec A Bordeaux BBC 68 th /22th Sec South East Bergerac CSCFC 146 th /41 st Sec South East Cholet CSCFC 167 th /85 th Sec South East Cholet CSCFC 62 nd /9 th Sec Palamos BBC The Sire Honours: 121 st /36 th Sec A Bordeaux BBC 20 th /6 th Sec A Barcelona BBC I would like to say a well done to all the birds making it home both on the day and next, especially in such difficult circumstances. Also thank you to Clare and the complete team of the Classic for all their hard work. Tony Leggatt with Grandchildren Rebekah and Mitchell Leggatt. The partnership of Keith Ashley and Mike Perkins from Eastleigh take the 3 rd Open 3 rd SE Section spot. We started up together in 2004 when Keith who was near retirement decided he wanted to race pigeons again, after being many years away from the sport. I was at work when asked by our friend Alex Wiseman if I would go round the road and help Keith get set up. Which after giving up the sport 5 years previous, I thought why not, it would be a great challenge and a bit of fun to watch birds come home again as I was due to retire.

We joined Sholing Racing Pigeon Club and started to think about birds. I saw an advert in the Homing World by Peter Reeves from Owslebury, Jan Aardens for sale at the right price and he only lived just up the road from us. I selected 6 pairs of various ages that had never flown out and that was the start. We bred 10 later bred birds and managed to get them into a young bird race. The next year we won a couple of races and then never looked back. I swapped the pairings around and bred two rounds off each before trying to break them in, unfortunately we only managed 50%. We obtained a few birds from Alex Wiseman his Marriot strain, still keeping the Jan Aarden's as a seperate strain. In 2006 I bought 8 pairs of Jan Aarden's from Steve Wright (The House Of Aarden) which we crossed into the ones from Peter Reeves and we just grew stronger and stronger when in the end we were winning from Kingsdown to Bergerac and just enjoying the birds flying around the loft. We have kept the Jan Aarden strain pure, with only two birds now left in the loft that been crossed out, which our Red Hen GB06 N61198 is one of them and she is a Jan Aarden x Marriot. Her Sire is a red cock given to us by Alex bred from his Dax International pigeon. Her Dam is bred by us from the Jan Aardens we bought from Peter Reeves. She has always been a reliable race bird. As a yearling she arrived home on the day from a very hard Classic race when there were only a few home on the day. We thought then that she might turn out to be something special but we never seem to get her right till this year. She has had two short races this year Carentan and Fougeres, then sent to Tarbes sitting 10 day old eggs. Her nest mate GB06 N has been 85th open Tarbes. Our second bird is pure Jan Aarden, he also has only had two short races. We pair up on St Valentine's day and train quite vigorously till the birds reach 250 miles racing, then let the selected racing and flying round the loft keep them fit. Keith Ashley and Mike Perkins. Taking 4 th Open 4 th SE Section is my brother in law Bill Norman from Southampton. Any body who knows Bill will definitely agree it couldn t of happened to a nicer guy.

Bill timed Pretty Hen at 21:11:31 flying 536 miles racing to her 5 day old youngster and was the last of the four timed on the winning day. Pretty Hen was so called because that s how she has always been referred to. Robbie Jones on visiting Bill s lofts always picks her out. Bill was over the moon when she dropped, he knew what a great achievement it was timing on such a filthy night. She is a half Delbar crossed Janssen x Van den Bosche. The Sire is a blue pied Delbar and was bred by Martin, Clare and Jack Norman and is a brother to their cock bird Jack the Lad who was also timed on the day from Tarbes 2008 and 14 days later being one of only 38 on the day from BBC Bordeaux which was a very difficult race and timed the following season at 21:00 hrs taking 64 th Open BBC Bordeaux. The breeding is Graham Matthews from Titchfield. The Van Den Bosche comes down from Bill s number 65 cock who was a very good racer. He was bred by friends Tony and Ingrid Jurd. His racing highlight was being a single entry to Bergerac and was 2 nd Section 43 rd Open winning about 1000 that day. His real potential was realised in the stock loft, siring countless winners also Grandsire to many winners. The Janssen in Pretty Hen s pedigree is from Bill s great friend Jack Beggs. Jack s Janssen family have run through Bill s loft for many years. Some of Robbie Jones birds have found their way to the Norman loft and have produced many winners. Robbie also being a very good friend. Bill would like to congratulate the other fanciers who timed on the day and thank everybody that has congratulated him. Bill Norman. One name that always sticks out year after year at Tarbes is Les Kidd of New Milton. Every season Les gives a brilliant team performance. For 2011 he is 5 th and 9 th Open with his first two and showing 42 nd 45 th, 81 st and 86 th Open with his other 4 birds. First of all I would like to congratulate the 4 gallant pigeons who made it on the night. When morning arrived with low cloud and drizzle, I did not think any pigeons would be moving this early and then my pied hen landed at 5.35am. She is a direct daughter of my 8 th Open Barcelona cock, who also came in the drizzling rain from Barcelona in The hen was also 32 nd Open last year and is bred down from my old family of Ian Benstead and John Wills, the old London Sheppard family. I would like to say well done to all the fanciers who timed in.

Les Kidd. Dave Wells of Bordon is lying in the 6 th Open position with a yearling chequer cock. Dave said he was very surprised to get a bird in the morning at 10 past 6, what with the bad British weather. The Dam of this bird won the yearling cup from Tarbes in 2010 and it looks as though the Son is going to follow suit in He has had 4 races for the build up to Tarbes and Dave clocked him from BBC Poitiers 2 weeks ago flying 318 miles. He was sitting 14 days and then a youngster was put under him. Daves passion is the long distance races and he gets a lot of enjoyment seeing a pigeon drop from 500 miles +. Dave would like to thank Clare Norman for the work she does. Dave and Jackie Wells. 7 th, 8 th, 10 th, 11 th, 18 th and 23 rd Open is the Japanese Sniper Andy Parsons of Salisbury. I have just had the best weekend with pigeons since 2001, as I just clocked 10 out of 13 from Tarbes and these are the details of the first 4 birds, all of which could have topped the section. 1 st bird: Dam bred from a George Burgess cock crossed with a Mick Rumbold hen which was sent over to my good friend Nick Smith to put with one of his best cocks. This hen from that mating has won a position in the first 40 in a short channel race with the NFC. She has also

flown 4 times Tarbes including being clocked in last years NFC race. 2 nd bird. This is a two year old cock. The Sire was 3 times Tarbes and 33 rd Palamos and is a son of my old stock hen which is a granddaughter of Culmergold. He was paired to a good hen from the Burgess cock which was 38 th San Sebastian race with the NFC. The Dam is also a granddaughter of 4 th Open Palamos in 2001 and 1 st Section 8 th Open San Sebastian NFC rd bird. Sire being a son from a brother/sister mating off 2 day birds in 2008 Tarbes. These again from my good Cannon hen when paired to a red Burgess cock. The Dam of the 3rd pigeon is a Hagen hen. 4 th bird. This is a 2 year old late bred and this was the 4th race of her life, it is bred from a cock purchased at the Mr Nethercott sale and is of Cannon/Fairbrother breeding. It was paired a daughter of G Burgess's 8 th Open Pau. All these pigeons were sent on early eggs. I know you will all join me in congratulating Andy on a fantastic performance in the Classic Tarbes race and the BBC Palamos race timing 2 birds on the winning day to finish provisional 3 rd and 5 th Open. Andy Parsons. Here are two fanciers that deserve a very special mention. Brian (or Fred as he likes to be known) and Will Hayles from Calbourne on the Isle Of Wight 12 th, 13 th, 14 th and 30 th Open. Fred timed 3 pigeons in just over 3 and a half minutes. His first at 7.08, his 2 nd and 3 rd at 7.12 and his 4 th at Add to that, his entry was 4 birds. That is excellent flying by anyone s standards. Fred s first bird is a Deweerdt cross which on 11 th June was 4 th Solent Federation Fougeres. She is a full sister to Doms Girl 10 th Open Bergerac for Graham Rann and Daughters. I don t know much about Fred but a lot of fanciers say he is a smashing bloke. A little birdie told me that in Fred s spare time he does a bit of modelling (not the airfix plane type either). I have it on good terms that Fred posed only wearing a pigeon for a Calendar to raise money for someone that got injured in a cycling accident.

Fred and Will Hayles. 15 th Open Owers Brothers from Bere Regis. George and Pete Owers have been in partnership for approximately 3 years and race from George s home in Bere Regis. The birds are flown on the natural system. The pigeon they clocked from Tarbes is a blue pied Busschaert cock bred by Tony Phillips of Weymouth. They bought this pigeon at the Weydor breeder/buyer in It flew consistently as a young bird and as a yearling was sent to the Club races with the Dorset Federation. In 2009 it was sent to CSCFC Bergerac and was 89 th Open 38 th SW Section 426 miles. He also went to BBC Bordeaux and was 41 st Open 3 rd Section flying 411 miles winning the Weydor Specialist Club on this race. George has kept a record and this pigeon has flew over 2000 miles in this year alone. In 2010 he was sent to CSCFC Messac 108 th Open 30 th SW Section and also went on to CSCFC Bergerac where he was 16 th Open 6 th SW Section, again winning the Weydor Specialist Club and CSCFC Tarbes but came home on the second day. This season he has been sent to CSCFC Carentan, BBC Messac, CSCFC Messac, NFC Cholet and BBC Poitiers with 9 hours on the wing, then on again to Tarbes where he was feeding a big youngster and driving his hen to nest. George and Pete feed the birds on Willsbridge No2 with a few peanuts. Training is done twice a week from Sandbanks which is about 15 miles. They have also cross nominated their bird in to the Dorset Federation and have won the Golden Jubilee race as well. George and Pete would like to thank Dave Davies for taking the birds to the marking station, Charlie Riley for his help and support and finally the Officials from the Weymouth Clock Station and Weydor Specialist Club. (thank you to Chris White for this report).

George Owers. The first NE member to verify taking 1 st, 4 th and 5 th NE was Jack and Sally Baden from Swindon. We have been in pigeons some twenty odd years now. Flying local birds from local flyers, namely Colin Croucher Busschaerts and Derek Vardy gift birds of the same strain but from his old Shy Lass family, on widowhood. We have in recent years crossed some distance blood in to our lofts and it is nice it is showing through. Our first bird was a Hartog Van Loon/ Shy Lass cross that has been very reliable this season. He flew the Messac Classic earlier this season finishing 19 th Section 92 nd Open. Our second and third birds also flew the Messac Classic and the second one has been as keen as mustard this year. We were very pleased with him and the third pigeon who we know will be somewhere handy, duly turned up for us. Jack and Sally Baden.

Stuart Luff & Phil Walker leading the N.W Section and 19 th Open flying a distance of 597 Miles with Chester a 4 year old Blue Pied Cock. Busschaert x Deweerdt x Vangeel, prize winner from miles including 3 rd N.W Sect, 15 th Open CSCFC Bergerac 2010, following this race it has always been the plan to send Chester to Tarbes this season. Sent to the race having just pushed up his first flight. Chester s Sire is V100 a top racing cock winner of numerous prizes including 2 nd N.W Sect, 42 nd Open CSCFC Cholet, 4 th Sect, 36 th Open CSCFC Bergerac. Bred from gift birds from Stan Dangerfield & Ivan Hofton. Dam is pure Van Geel bred by Llouella Pigeon World. The loft has shown a bit of form in classic & national races this season being 5 th Sect, 89 th Open CSCFC Messac. 4 th Sect, 49 th Open and 10 th Sect, 78 th Open BBC Poitiers. This topped with probable 1 st, 11 th & 13 th N.W Section in this Tarbes Race. The partnership race cocks only on the classic widowhood system with some variations. Having experimented with various mixtures over the last couple of seasons, we have now settled on a combination of Versa Laga mixtures. The cocks are never given a break down mixture, only a lighter mixture on their return. The Race birds & stock birds are paired at Christmas, breeding one youngster each, then parted and re-paired to coincide with the race programme; this helps them to hold their flights until late in the season. The cocks are exercised around the loft for 1hr morning and evening, with Stuart in charge morning and Phil in charge evenings. The birds are never trained after the first race. The hens are fed on barley until the day before they are shown to the cocks; the cocks are given the hens prior to basketing for all races. We would like to thank Stan Dangerfield for his generosity with gift birds over many years, also good friends, Anner Smith and Dave Fox for taking our birds to the marking stations. Stuart Luff and Phil Walker (holding Chester).

The lofts of Stuart Luff and Phil Walker. Tony Miessner of Ledbury has the NW Runners Up position and 24 th Open. Firstly, I would like to congratulate John Tyerman on flying a tremendous pigeon on the day from Tarbes and also the other 3 fanciers for timing on the day. I would also like to congratulate Stuart Luff and Phil Walker for winning the North West Section. My first pigeon timed in is a 3 year old widowhood cock which has had a fair few Club positions in the past but became injured last year and didn t race very much that season. He is bred from a pair of stock birds that I purchased from Mark James family of pigeons, of Wye View Lofts, Joy s Green, Forest of Dean. This pigeon is now named Patience619, after a good friend of mine Geoff Cooper encouraged me to take my time and have more patience with my pigeons. This has now paid off, so many thanks to Geoff and Catherine Cooper. I also timed in 2 other pigeons making a total return of 3 out of 4 birds flying 619 miles 619 yards. One of these pigeons is a yearling which is the Son of my first pigeon, what a family! All of my pigeons timed in today are from stock birds from Mark James family of pigeons. I would also like to thank Mark Dorrington of Litton and David Bullingham of Stroud for all their support and generosity. A thank you also to all my Club mates at Ross and District Flying Club. Well done to all fanciers that timed in from Tarbes and most importantly many thanks to my wife Karly for all her hard work with the pigeons. Tony and Karly Miessner.

R J Goddard and Son of Reading 2 nd NE Section 27 th Open. Well, here s a very modest man. I asked him for some details and he only sent me a couple of lines. Dave has a hat full of long distance performances to his credit and I am sure it won t be long before he wins Palamos. Dave only joined the Classic 2 weeks before Tarbes, but has scored straight away. His 2 year old blue hen was sent on a 5 day old youngster. She was raced very lightly in preparation for this Tarbes with the Camrose RPC Carentan and Fougeres twice. She is bred from Rebecca 3 rd Open BBC Palamos. Hopefully next time we will get a bit more background on Dave and his birds. Thank you to the markers and helpers at all the marking stations and to Robbie Jones, Martin and Bill Norman for collecting the crates from Dorking on such an awful evening. CONVOYER S REPORT My assistant for the Tarbes race, Ian Mead and I dropped off empty baskets at the marking stations the day before marking. On marking day we picked up pigeons at South Ockendon and Maidstone arriving at Leatherhead at 11.45hrs for the final pick up. All the birds were watered at the marking stations. We set off for Southampton to pick up the C.S.C.F.C. birds at 12.45hrs and arrived at the marking station at 14.30hrs. The whole convoy were lightly fed and watered at Portsmouth docks and we sailed for Caen at 22.45hrs. Docking in France at 05.45hrs, we were soon on the road and arrived at motorway services south of Bordeaux for our night stop at 15.45hrs and the birds were fed at 17.00hrs. Next morning we were on the road early and arrived at the Tarbes Geant Casino Supermarket liberation site at 11.30hrs, to the welcoming site of blue sky and sun shine, in fact the weather conditions for our whole run through France was brilliant. I rang Steve Appleby at 19.00hrs and he gave me a line of flight weather report for the Friday and said it looked good for a liberation. I awoke at 04.30hrs on the Friday morning to a 100% over cast sky at Tarbes and after getting a good flight line weather report at 05.00hrs from Steve Appleby back in Guildford, I decided the race was on when the cloud had cleared. The weather cleared by 06.45hrs and I cut the strings and liberated the convoy at 07.00hrs in no wind. The birds cleared instantly and headed in a northerly direction. The weather conditions on our drive back to Caen docks were perfect for 550 mile racing and the wind picked up to be light North West on route. Thanks to Ian Mead and Steve Appleby for their very hard work on this the longest old bird Classic race! I would like to add that the new ventilated curtains on the L&SECC transporter are brilliant and have improved the vehicle no end. When ever we stopped and opened the back of the transporter the pigeon racking area was cool and dust free. A great job! RUBE JOHNSON (L&SECC CONVOYER).
