Fougeres Young Birds & Old Hens National Young Bird Winners Old Hens Winners John & Theresa (Gladwin & Jarvis) Dave & Gary Heywood from Leigh on Sea from Basildon with Theresa s Boy with Kings Road Princess 1 st Section J 1 st Section J Warmest congratulations to the winners of our Fougeres young bird and old hens races, John & Theresa Gladwin and Dave & Gary Heywood. After a one day holdover due to the unsavoury weather conditions from the midlands upwards on Saturday, Nigel liberated the birds at 7.45am with a very light SE wind at Fougeres changing to West then South Westerly when they approached the English coastline. With this our final race of the 2018 season we would like to congratulate all of our winners and thank everyone who has assisted us this season. Thank you to Bill Travers our driver who is now retiring for his effort over the last five seasons. We wish you well Bill. All positions are provisional until the paperwork has been checked Taking 1 st Open 1 st Section J in the young bird race is John & Theresa (Gladwin & Jarvis) from Leigh on Sea. I would like to congratulate my good friends and fellow Thames North Eastern counties members David and Gary Heywood on their old hens win. My winner is now called Theresa's Boy, it was that or randy git. The reason for that was he was so keen to get into the hens running up to the race each day Theresa went to the loft, she kept saying he is going to hurt himself as he was banging on the door and the partition to get through to the hens. So I was very aware he was very keen, the reason being I do not have early young bird's they were weaned in April and had only just started to pair together in the last couple of weeks, on seeing this I split them up a couple of weeks before as I was worried the hens would be laying just before the nationals and would not be able to go to the races. Theresa's Boy had already scored 3 rd Hullbridge Club 4 th Open Thames when beaten by 2 loft mates on the trap. His breeding is also impeccable being a Formula 1 Lofts Frans Zwol with the sire being the Amal cock who I bred and was raced by Micky Connolly and Son. Racing he won 2 x 1 st Fed including winning the Fed by over 7 minutes, plus 1 st and 4 th Amal 4,000+ birds and many other prizes including Fed bird of the year. After finishing racing he came back to Formula 1 Lofts and was paired this year to Guernsey Princess who won 1 st and 3 rd Open BICC who in turn is from the Prince of Rekkem who won 2 nd 19,409 birds beat by a loft mate, 3 rd 9,166 birds, 15 th & 18 th 9,000+ birds 47 th 17,429 birds etc. Incidentally the BICC winner the day before was also a grandchild of the Prince of Rekkem.

I would like to close by saying a massive thank you to Theresa without her help and support I could not race pigeons let alone dream of winning any races and definitely not at national level. John & Theresa Gladwin 2 nd & 3 rd Open 1 st & 2 nd Section E is Ken Pettitt from Stoke on Trent who has had a cracking season. (thank you to Michael John Burden for the report). What can I write about this man and his birds? Well I have known Ken since I moved to this little village in He was by all accounts a very good Club and Fed flyer so I teased him about the Nationals and he took the bait. I am glad he did because he has become a great friend of mine now and although I do not like to admit it he has taught me many things about pigeons. This year he had had only 3 races with the BBC winning all three section positions and provisionally 2 nd & 3 rd Open from Fougeres at 325 miles. I was watching with Ken at the time the birds got home, two dived right passed me, trapped within a few seconds of their arrival. (Both on the clock at the same time). A few minutes later he had 3 together who all trapped quickly. We did not understand where they had come from as they appeared from the back of the lofts so I went out to see if I could see if any more were headed for the lofts which I saw 3 birds who appeared to be coming back from the north. They did not trap as quickly as the first batches but they did and Ken had 9 birds on the clock within 6 minutes of the first bird. An awesome team performance by Ken and his birds. They are practically all his old family of Vandenabeele birds who are bred down through Carrie and Jester. These are the same birds he would win at 50 miles out to 500 miles then onto 680 miles!! Ken starts his young birds training not to long before the first young bird race. His wife Shirley takes his pigeons and will go in any direction up to about 30 miles about 6 times then they go to the race points not in a race but privately trained usually on a Saturday and taken as far as the coast. Once they have flown over 100 miles he never trains them again only flies them around home. I handled the birds which are lean and solid to the touch but in good health. He feeds maize to the birds and beans and they eat as much as he can get down them. Then he feeds some treats to get them eating again. All his team went to the MCC race Portland and last weekend again to the MCC race Carentan where he won 3 rd Open. I went to see him today and he is sorting out some to resend back to Carentan this coming Saturday.

Ken Pettitt & Michael Burden Mark Gilbert from Windsor 4 th, 5 th & 6 th Open 1 st, 2 nd & 3 rd Section D. My first bird was a Jelle Jellema, the father was a son of Rena 6 th International Pau and 7 th National Barcelona 2018, the mother was a double grand daughter of his champion breeder Orion. The second bird was from a son of Kanibal 4 th International Barcelona and 26 th International Perpignan, the mother was from Starlight and Mellissa 1 st and 2 n International. The third bird was three quarters Jelle, the father was from New Laureaat 1 st International Barcelona when paired to Kliene Jade 1 st international Barcelona. The mother was from Jelle champion breeder Zwart Gold. Mark Gilbert

7 th Open and Runner Up in Section D is Terry Haley from Abbots Langley. Blue W/F Cock GB18Z60649 was bred by A & S Hughes of Rochdale, Lancs. Simon has bred and gifted Terry many winners in previous seasons and this is another one. He is Janssen based and is a grandson of Clean Slate. Simon and his dad, Tony, are very successful fliers in the North West of England and are not afraid to go out and buy the best to help them stay on top, for example - 11 x 1 st Feds and also big Open Race winners in Terry himself has won 1 st Fed on the North and South Road Federations in 2018 as well as 1 st Combine North and 1 st Combine South in He only sends a small team in these nationals, only 4 in this race and his 2 nd pigeon should also feature in the final result of what proved to be a testing race, according to the verification times and numbers. Well done to the winners and to Mark Gilbert on stopping me winning the section, also the convoying team and administrators for a job well accomplished again. Pictured with Terry is his youngest grandson Jack who is 4 ½ months old (Harry s brother) and Pippa the dog. Terry Haley, Grandson Jack & Pippa the dog. In 8 th open we have Nick Atkin from Telford who is our next Section E member to time. This youngster was bred from my stock pair which was bred by Frank Bristow, from lines including both of his Kings Cup winners, Oscar and Kezie. She was sent sitting 10day old eggs.

Nick Atkin s young hen John & Ben Oakley s young cock bird 9 th Open is John & Ben Oakley from Whitchurch, Shropshire. I race in partnership with my dad John in Whitchurch, Shropshire where we live and work on a dairy farm. I've been involved with pigeons since I could walk but took over the management of the birds in 2011 when I returned home from college. Since then the club racing has started to decline in the area and a greater focus has been put towards building a sustainable winning family for national racing. We rate the BBC very highly among the national clubs as the birds always return in fantastic condition and the quality of racing is very good. There is a great atmosphere at marking and the club is run very smoothly a real credit to yourself. Our young cock in 4 th section 9 th open is bred for the job being from a gifted Gaby Vandenbeele cock from top national man Micky Locke from the Wirral and a Gaby hen purchased from another top national man on the area Derrick Jones. This was the first nest for the gifted cock but the hen has bred a host of top channel performers for us. This young cock caught my eye about 4 weeks into the young bird season when all of a sudden he took a shine to a 2 days old baby that two lesbian hens were sitting on the floor. This cock suddenly decided one Friday afternoon to bully the hens off the nest and sit the youngster. That week he took 3 rd club from Frome proving he was motivated by this young baby. The next week he went to the BICC to Guernsey where he arrived the next morning on a tough day for the north west where the wind was strong West with little birds coming up the country. He was then rested for a week and went back into the Federation to bath where he took 2 nd club 2 nd section Fed. He seemed to be bouncing at this point feeding a big youngster and starting to drive one of the old hens to nest again. Sure enough he didn't let us down he dropped like a stone and was straight in his bowl completing the 328 mile journey in 6 hours 58 minutes. We seem to have been lucky this year and the youngsters have clicked, they have won 8/8 club races and took 1 st West section in the MNFC the same day.

1 st Section G 10 th Open is Khan Bros from New Malden. Firstly congratulations to the Gladwin family and Formula one Lofts with a outstanding leading pigeon and a deserving win. Our 1 st pigeon was a cock bred down from Ace Lofts stock of The L Ring Hen line. The dam of him scored really well being 11 th Open Tarbes and 12 th Open St Vincent. This was our last race of the season and wish everyone a healthy winter. Khan Bros Mick & Lyn Chaplin from Woking 2 nd Section G. This young bird was flown to the perch and was having her seventh race of the season, the previous week she had been our first bird from NFC YB Coutances. Both birds homed in good condition. Mick & Lyn Chaplin

1 st Section C is Sam Wilson & Grandson Keiron. Firstly, congratulations to the winner and also to all section winners. I only recently came back into the sport after a long break and I am delighted to be in partnership with my young grandson Kieron who is very keen and a great help with the birds. The bird which won the Section was a Mandelartz which was bred from my team of yearlings which did very well for me last year. When I came back into the sport last year all my birds came from my great friend Tommy Cuddy of Limburg Lofts, Bingelrade, Holland, so a big thank you to Tommy for providing me with such excellent birds and encouraging me to take up the sport again. Also a big thanks to my brother Ralph who is a great help. Sam Wilson & Keiron Mr & Mrs Mark & Julie Gower from Fordingbridge 1 st Section B. Firstly well done to John & Theresa Gladwin. My section winner is a hen, bred in February & raced natural but put on the darkness this year to see if it would help with effects young bird sickness. The team still contracted it but this time in May and the effects were very limited and therefore didn t effect the young bird season. Her preparation for the race was two races up to 107miles on the west route and one race East of 55

miles. She was unpaired and is bred for the distance from Andy Parsons stock and was only sent across the water as a test as one of its parents is from un-tested stock. I would like to thank my wife Julie who helps with training and is not scared of using the scraper either! Julie Gower 2 nd Section J is Trevor & Adrian Wilson From Manuden. We are Trevor and Adrian Wilson, a father and son partnership. We race from Adrian's back garden which is located in Manuden, nr Bishops Stortford. We are very small back garden fanciers with limited time as we both work long hours. The bird in question is a blue cock known as 'Drop Tail' as he s got one tail flight that hangs very slightly down. He was sent on a 6 day young bird I put under him the night before marking. This was his 8 th race. In his 7 th race his was 4 th section P in T.N.F.C. He is first round home bred youngster, by that I mean that we don't follow fashionable strains and have been putting top pigeons together for 11 years to produce our own strain. His sire 'Mr Busschaert' in his pedigree only back to his Grandparents are 26 x 1 st Club and 12 x 1 st Fed. Dam is a granddaughter of our Koopman stock cock 'Verius' winner of 5 times in top 100 with between 10,000 and 18,000 competing. A full brother of ''Drop Tail' was sent to a new starter Matthew Mason, he has won 2 x 1 st Club and 2 x 5 th Section in the Lincolnshire South Road Fed with up to 3,500 birds a week. We bred Mat 6 youngsters and 5 of them have scored - Well done Mat.

Trevor & Adrian Wilson 1 st Section A is Godfrey Kingswood-Cox from Southampton. Thank god for the British Barcelona Club because win lose or draw these races are the ones I look forward to every year. I've always competed in the 200 mile plus young bird races north or south and relish the chance to test some of my youngsters at the longer distance. However because of the heavy loses in recent years there are very few of them to enter, even though the heavy loses are mainly due to hawk attacks and not distances flown I have to say that I am just as pleased with getting 11 out of 13 home as I am to win the section. As far as my section winner is concerned, he flew the Guernsey Open Race placed 156 th open in the CSCFC Coutances young bird and was just a few minutes behind my verified bird from NFC Coutances. Now named Blue Thunder Bolt as his mother is a daughter of Volante who was 36 th open CSCFC Pau and 38 th open BBC Bordeaux in the same year. She in turn is a great granddaughter of Blue Thunder 2 1 st open only bird on the day CSCFC Pau and he had the Blue Thunder trophy named after him as he scored from every CSCFC race that year the father of Blue Thunder Bolt is a son of Polycock and is the full brother to Barcelos 7 th open BBC Palamos for me in 2015 Polycock was another pigeon with an unequalled record in 3 rd open CSCFC Pau, 85 th open NFC Saintes, 6 th open CSCFC Bergerac, 153 rd open NFC Pau and 45 th open CSCFC Nantes in the same year eclipsed only by his niece Daphne as she had a slightly higher co efficient of 2.4 in 4 of those races. Thank god for the NHS who after the last few years of ill health have worked hard trying different medications finally making me feel well enough to do my birds justice by putting the work needed into them. Lastly congrats to Gladwin and Jarvis and all those who timed in as they all deserve credit.

Godfrey Kingswood-Cox Martin Williams Martin Williams from Hereford 2 nd Section C. My 2 nd Section C bird is a darkness Blue Chequer Cock. This was his 7 th race having been raced in my local federation on the South West route for two races, and then switched to the East route in the West of England Combine for three races. He came well in that, having a 15 th Open position out of 3,403 birds. After that race he was sent to Coutances with the NFC and pooled well, but didn t score. He was then entered in the BBC and found his way with a strong West wind against him. He came on a super line. His sire is my 15 year old Huybrect cock, sire of 31 x 1 st, paired to my NFC 1 st Section hen, Roodhooft x Huybrect line. I had a visit two years ago by a good fancier who said I must pair these two together, how right he was! 2 nd Section A is Martin, Clare & Jack Norman (Mannor Lofts) from Southampton. This was the third time this little hen had crossed the channel for us in as many weeks. Always first or second in the clock. Her sire is Magic Mason 13 th Open BICC Mont De Marsan 2017, only 13 on the day. Also 21 st Open BICC Alencon, 80 th Open BICC Agen plus other positions. He is half Venner of Street from Mick De Carteret of Guernsey and half our own long distance family. Her Dam is Venner of Street bred by Dave Vowles. Her sire was destined for the stock loft next season, so he has already made a good start.

Martin, Clare & Jack Norman s Hen 2 nd Section B is James Fulford from Salisbury. First of all, I want to congratulate John and Teresa for a great performance. I have now got to thank, Dave Day from our local club for all the work he helps me with - from training to excellent advise. I have also got to thank Andy parsons for the help in transporting my birds to the national clubs when I'm working, as I would struggle to get my birds to marking. Finally I would like to thank him for giving me some really good pigeons for breeding, the father to my 2 nd section winner who is a blue Cock. He has also bred me a 6 th section 90 th open young bird in The mother to the 2 nd section winner is my outstanding barker Hen she has bred me my 1 st section and 3 rd section winners as well as the 2 nd section winner. James Fulford Katie Fulford

Dennis Rusted Next to Jaimie in Section G is Mick & Lyn Chaplin from Woking. The yearling blue hen and the young blue hen came together out of the South and trapped well. The old hen one of a team of eight

was having her third race of the season, her first race being BICC Guernsey, then NFC Old Hens Coutances and finally BBC Old Hens Fougeres. She had been a widow hen through most of the Old Bird season until her cock was lost. She was then put in the young bird section where she paired up with a spare old hen. They sat 4 eggs for 3 weeks and I slipped a small youngster under them the day before basketing. 2 nd Section C Tony Lucas (A P & S M Lucas) from Royal Wootton Bassett. Firstly I would like to congratulate the winners. Unfortunately I don t know much about the breeding of this 3 year old hen as she was obtained as a young bird from the late John White of Lyneham who was a club mate of mine in the Wootton Bassett Flying Club. Since a youngster she has been a consistent pigeon for me and has taken some Club positions. Tony Lucas Phil Priddle 1 st Section A is Phil Priddle from Southampton. This hen is a 4 year old Vandenabeele. In 2017 she took 4 th Open 3 rd Section in the CSCFC Coutances race and many more in the top 100 open National and Classic sections. She was given a young bird the day before basketing sitting on 16 day eggs.

Derek Human from West Meon 2 nd Section A. Sadly Derek passed away one day after taking this position. His goal was to race his pigeons through to the end of the season and he achieved that. God Bless you Derek. This 2 year old hen has been very consistent for Derek over the last three old hens races with the BBC, NFC and CSCFC taking 17 th Section 304 th Open NFC Coutances, 13 th Section 24 th Open CSCFC Coutances and now provisionally 2 nd Section 11 th Open BBC Fougeres. She was sent sitting well over 21 days on pot eggs and also recently a youngster. Derek Human 2 nd Section J is John Cowlin from Hockley. Firstly let me congratulate David and Gary Heywood on winning the Old Hens race. My pigeon is a yearling Frans Zwol bred by Formula 1 Lofts. She has scored inland and in the BICC previously, she has raced all season from the middle of April and this was her 5 th channel race this year along with 2 as a young bird. Her breeding is the very best of the Frans Zwols with the sire being direct from Tip Top Junior when he was paired to the Queen of Rekkem. He has already bred many good birds in both Holland and the UK up to 5,900 birds and the dam is Fransje she was a super racer winning many positions including 5 th 9,525 birds, 41 st 6,378 birds 99 th 8,866 birds and

The sire from Holland, I bought in 2011 at a young bird sale in Salisbury. Blue Girl is a full sister to my Nephew, Elvin Booth s bird, who was 7 th Open Old Hens race from Coutances on the 25 th August this year with the CSCFC.

As a youngster Blue Girl was raced with the Dorset Fed and scored twice across the channel in open races. This year I raced her celibate with the widowhood hens. At the end of the old bird season she was paired and after sitting for 14 days on a 2 nd round of eggs went to Fougeres.
