President: Nigel Rigiani Chairman: Mike Shepherd Patron: Mark Gilbert Niort National 1 st Open 1 st Section B Mr & Mrs Lawrence Cowley from Grimstone, Dorchester With Grimstone Blue Lady Our third race of the season saw just over a thousand birds entered by 182 members. The trip down to Niort went unhindered and the convoy arrived at 2.30pm when the birds were fed and watered and then the transporter was put in the shade of the trees for the birds to rest until the next day (also for Bill our driver as well by the looks of things). After conferring with our Weather Advisor Steve Appleby, Nigel liberated the pigeons at 6am in to an E NE wind. An early start was paramount to the birds making headway before the sun warmed up. Thank you to all the marking station volunteers for your continued support. Congratulations to our Niort National Winners Lawrence and Marg Cowley from Grimstone, Dorchester 1 st Open 1 st Section B. Lawrence and Marg clocked a yearling blue hen, having her third channel race, to win 1 st Section B, 1 st Open Niort. As a young bird she had three races winning a 2 nd, 4 th and 1 st Club, 1 st Dorset Fed Maidstone. Her nest mate won 2 nd club, 2 nd Fed Maidstone, Her breeding is by a blue cock IHU12S28980 National Hero, a Freddy Vanderheede x Andre Roodhooft, loaned to them by Mike Staddon, bred by Sheldon Leonard, paired to a blue Vandenabeele hen. Mike Staddon has lent us several stock birds and bred us four to six young birds for the last few years. A lot of our birds carry Mike Staddon blood mixed with Frank Pearson Busschaert cross. She is flown roundabout, but hens trap in their own section, but on Wednesday night after two hours I had to move the cocks over to get the hens down into their nest boxes. They are let out by Marg at 4 p.m. every day. They are fed Willsbridge max ES in the early part of the week. The last three feeds are Natural Widowhood mix, about 1oz a day. We had five birds on the day, out of seven hens sent. Marg is always there to do whatever asked, and is a great help in the day to day running of the lofts. Once again we would like to thank Messrs. Davis and Swain for taking the birds to the marking stations.

Lawrence Cowley. Runners up to Lawrence and Marg and also 2 nd Section B are good friends of theirs Graham and Mary Ayles of Weymouth flying as M, G & M Ayles. Graham and Mary timed in a 2 year old cock bird, driving to the nest and he s always been a very consistent bird to the loft even as a young bird. The sire is Herbot base and bred by Mary s brother Robin Webb. The dam is a full sister to their good Pau hen which comes from Bobby Ballard of Lytchett Matravers. Graham and Mary started racing pigeons in 1996 and have gained many great performances over the years, including winning the CSCFC Lessay race in 2009 and also 1 st Sec National Flying Club Saintes and Fougeres. They would like to congratulate their good friends Lawrence and Marg Cowley on winning the race, also Mary s sister Jane Johns who was 4 th Sec 7 th Open. Not forgetting all the other Weydor members on their performances today. A big Thank you to Diddy Davies for taking the birds to the marking, you are a great help to a lot of fanciers in the Weymouth and Dorchester area. We will be having a few drinks tonight to celebrate and hopefully will be attending the Annual Dinner in November.

Graham Ayles. For the Winner of Section H & 3 rd Open we travel across to sunny Jersey to Glen Moon. These lads are very passionate about racing and being members of the BBC gives them a chance to compete with fanciers from the mainland. This is my pigeon in the Niort National winning me 1 st Section H 3 rd Open. He is a 2 year old blue cock who I am now going to name 'True Grit' as he has given his all in every race, win or lose. As a young bird he has flown in Club races & the BBC Fougeres Young Bird National. As a yearling he took cards in the BBC Fougeres National also the Le Mans National. This year he has been outstanding in Club & National races. He was bred from a blue hen which was bred for me by my good friend & fellow fancier, Mick De Carteret of Guernsey, this Blue hen was bred from Mr Venner of Street's birds & the cock was a Belgian bird which I acquired from the Aviary of the late Lawrence Le Ruez of Jersey, although I have no idea where it came from originally or its breeding. May I take this opportunity to say a big well done to Mr & Mrs Cowley of Dorchester on their excellent win in the Niort National, that was a tough race! The Channel Islands had only 7 birds out of 36 belonging to 9 members on the day. I wish to thank Clare Norman for all the help she gives to us Channel Island fanciers, truly the Mother Teresa of pigeons! A big thank you also to Barry Wilby for giving his time to photograph my bird outside his loft (as his loft looks much better than mine), he's not the best of photographers though as he makes me look so old!! Mostly well done to Willy Healy for his 2 nd Section 5 th Open, this time I turned the tables on him as he beat me by 10 seconds in past years in Old Hen Fougeres National.

Hope you all enjoy the remainder of 2014's BBC racing season. Glen Moon. Another Weydor member who is having a great season is Bill Pitney from Weymouth 4 th Open 3 rd Section B. My bird from Niort, I have now named Buckland Billy Boy is 100% Bert Braspenning and is a half brother to my 3 rd Open Carentan winner with the BBC this year. Buckland Billy Boy had 3 channel races in preparation for Niort and was sent sitting 18 days. The bird was in perfect condition on arrival to the loft. Bill Pitney.

2 nd Section H 5 th Open is another young Jersey lad William Healy (although from his strong Scottish accent I don t think he originates from there!!!) My pigeon is a chequer white flight yearling cock sitting 16 days on eggs. His sire is a Geoff Kirkland & Joe Letchio of Alloa and his dam is my broken wing pure Joe Letchio hen which was killed by a hawk last year. Thank you to the convoyer s as I found my pigeons in good condition on their return and congratulations to my friend Glen Moon on his section win. Good luck to all BBC members on the upcoming races. William Healy. The much deserved winners of Section C also 6 th Open, Clive & Jill Rogers & Neil Sales from Writhlington have finally been rewarded for all their hard work to pigeon racing in general. The chequer cock was bred by Clive & Jill out of a pair of Luc Van Den Plas pigeons purchased direct from Luc some years ago when Clive visited Luc's lofts with his son Craig. At that time Clive flew pigeons with his son Craig and friend Neil (as Rogers, Son & Sales). This year Neil Sales has again joined the partnership but of course now with Clive and his wife, Jill. Sadly Craig no longer flies pigeons and is married to Kelly and has two young sons, Zac and Jake. Clive likes to think that his 4 year old grandson Zac may be a budding pigeon fancier, as he always asks to come down to see the loft and birds! The pigeon, who is flown on widowhood, started the 2014 season with 5 short training races to the south coast with Paulton Homing Society and High Littleton Flying Club and was then entered in the BICC Alencon where he was their 3 rd pigeon back to the loft on the day and BICC Tours when he was their 2 nd pigeon back. Jill noticed that he had been acting rather "differently" during the week before the BBC Niort race - strutting about more in his box and being more assertive with his section-mates and thought he might be there first pigeon back this time around. He has been fed on VL Superstar Plus mixed with VL Energy Plus nearer to the basketing day, with added popcorn maize, hemp and best quality pigeon peanuts to help build up energy levels.

Treetops Loft, pictured here, is 122 feet long with 18 sections in total and can house 80 widowhood cocks, 30 racing hens and 150 youngsters. The loft was built by Clive's brother Steve with Clive on the wheelbarrow! The design was based on the loft of the Geoff & Catherine Cooper. Clive & Jill would like to thank the BBC convoyer Nigel Rigiani for the excellent condition of the pigeons after their return from a very testing race. They clocked 3 out of their 11 cock birds entered on the day, with a further 2 returning first thing the next morning. Clive & Jill Rogers & Neil Sales. Treetops Lofts.

7 th Open 4 th Section B is Jane Johns from Weymouth. Jane s winning pigeon is a 2 year old widowhood cock who hen was taken by a hawk around the loft just before racing started, so Jane put a different hen in his box each time he came back from a race. This bird has only been trained to Shepton Mallet and then raced in the CSCFC Messac. The sire is a Ponderosa Janssen from their original stock from 1993 cross Tony Swain s dam which is a Jan Aarden cross Van der Wegen. Jane s performaces so far are 2 nd Open 2 nd Section B BBC Fougeres 2010, 12 th Open 4 th SW Section CSCFC Messac 2013 and 8 th Open 2 nd Section B BBC Niort She does get a lot of help around the loft from her Grandson Jack and he also goes to the local Portland and Weydor Specialist Club each week. Jane would like to congratulate Lawrence and Marg Cowley on winning the race and to say she is looking forward to Bergerac Lawrence!!, Graham and Mary Ayles and Bill Pitney on their performances. Plus Diddy Davies for taking the birds to the marking and Kevin and Christine White for taking the photo and supplying the information. Jane Johns & Grandson Jack. Raymond Beaconsfield from Marlborough 8 th Open 2 nd Section C. I have been flying from this area, near Marlborough since early 1990s. I now fly with the Ram Alley Homing Society which is a small club in the Wilts Fed. A very friendly club with a lot of pigeon banter and general leg pulling. I have done quite well at club level but this year decided to concentrate on the bigger races of the Southern Classic and the British Barcelona Club to find the true potential of my birds. My pigeons are mainly Janssens from the Ponderosa at Weymouth and I would like t take this opportunity to thank Mary and Tony of the Ponderosa as these Janssens have served me well. They are of the 05 James Bond side of the family. I flew in the National Flying Club in 2003 for the first time and was

4 th F Section and 5 th F Section with a hen and 12 th F Section with a cock. These are both original Janssens. The cock and hen I paired together which produced a hen bird which has just flown the Niort National and its nest mate which was my second pigeon home, unfortunately injured but still made it on the day. Raymond Beaconsfield. 9 th Open 3 rd Section C is one man who has still got it, the Legend himself Brian Sheppard from Trowbridge. His timer was a yearling cock down through The Sentry and the daughter of 2 nd International Dax. So, from Brian s best. This cock scored well as a baby being 1 st Section 215 th Open BICC Guernsey and 2 nd Section 106 th Open BICC Guernsey. He was also timed from BBC Tours as a baby to take 6 th Section 42 nd Open flying 303 miles. What a pigeon already, 1 st Section, 2 nd Section, 3 rd Section and 6 th Section and only a yearling. Looks like Brian has found yet another champion.

Brian Sheppard. From one man who is a Legend to another man who is a legend in his own mind (sorry Eamon, Martin told me to write that) Eamon Kelly of Lloyd & Kelly from Steventon 1st Section D 10th Open. Firstly, I would like to congratulate the winners of the race and sections on a very hard day of racing. My first bird is a yearling blue bar cock Alf Baker x Logan and was bred by Denny Phillips of Wales. We have a good friend in Downpatrick Northern Ireland George McIntosh, and he recommended I tried Denny's pigeons for distance racing-this is the first time George has got anything right in his life LOL. I now have 9 home out of an entry of 12 pigeons. These birds will now be rested and got ready for the Saintes National. Thank you to all the well wishers, and all the officials who do a great job for this club, with special thanks to Clare and Martin. Eamon & Jamie Rae Kelly.

Eamon s Section Winner. If any Club needs a picture of Johnny Attrill, I have now amassed quite a portfolio of photographs of him as yes you ve guessed it he has won another Section. 1 st Section A is Johnny East Wind Attrill of Salisbury. Well done all winner and all at the BBC. It s been a funny old week this one. I retired Nightmare this week and also retired a hen to pair him with after being told by Nigel Langstaff to do so. Well, how ironic my first bird is a son of Nightmare when paired to NL Koopman hen from Peter Kos. This young yearling cock who was 6 th Yearling Derby CSCFC Messac the other week is a right character. He flicks a bob wire back and out he goes round to the hens section. He hardly gets any road training as he goes out before I am at the loft. He nearly never went to this race as he was out and I had to let the hens in to the section to get him in. My second bird who is 3 rd Section is a red cock taking his fathers place who was 5 th Section and my all pooler double section winner Roland Janssen from my good friend Dave Day. I might retire him now and let the younger ones take over. I also had a bit of a shock Friday, my missus Michelle went to the doctors to see him as she thought she was going through the change. She came out looking totally worried and said You have got to take me up the hospital for a scan. What for I said. Michelle said Cos I m pregnant Well, you could have knocked me over with a feather, 17 weeks pregnant. Let s hope Nightmare stays as fertile as this old cock. Ha!! Ha!! I would like to also add that my first bird in the BICC Poitiers was my 1 st Section Winner in the BICC Falaise, a De Klak from Tony Cowan bought at the CSCFC sale and a big thanks to all at the BBC for looking after me with the Messac race which was no fault of theirs. Thank you again. On a sadder note, I would like to offer my condolences to Rob Jones and his family on the sad loss of Rob s Mum last week.

Johnny, Michelle & Kacey Leigh Attrill. Topping Section E and also taking positions 2 nd & 4 th Section as well, flying 469 miles are Mr & Mrs Alan Shore from Crewe. Bird No 1 Little Sam, GB12Z60544 was not raced as a young bird and was lightly raced as a yearling. He flew 12 hours from Messac in our local Club. He has only had two inland races and went to Carentan with the NFC this year. His breeding is KoNipius/Delbar, his dam comes out of John Barnett of Telford stock with a grand-daughter of my old Pau cock Danny Boy. Bird No 2 Our Ollie, GB 11N26512 has had two inland races this year and also went to Carentan with the NFC. He was 44 th Section J and 267 th Open Carentan NFC last year. Sire was bred by Brian Heath and dam was a John Barnett pigeon crossed with my own Danny Boy pigeons. Bird No 3 Harry Boy, GB11Z15064 has had exactly the same races as before. Sire and dam are John Barnett pigeons. Last year he won 22 nd Section J, 308 th Open NFC Cholet and 6 th Section J, 40 th Open Saintes NFC. John Barnett has said to me many times when I visited his lofts that I could take my pick from any of his young birds. A true gentleman of the sport. The blood of his pigeons runs through most of my stock now. Our birds are raced on Widowhood. We don t train hard preferring to send pigeons to the Club. They are fed on Gerry Plus and Versele Laga widowhood mix and I use our local feed store s trapping mix. They have as much as they like and surplus feed is removed. Peanuts are fed as a treat. We do not used medications unless absolutely necessary.

Alan Shore. Congratulations on another great performace from Peter Wells of Dunstable 2 nd Section D following on from his successes at Carentan and Messac. My first bird is a dark chequer hen flown on the widowhood. Being a granddaughter of the "11 hen" on both sides of her breeding also a granddaughter of a Schuman bred by Mr Ray Barrington. My second pigeon with a velocity of is a yearling widowhood hen sired by a mealy cock bred by Mr Guy Barrett of Leeds crossed with a Mr Chris Gordon hen. Peter Wells.

I hope in Chris case it s not three times a bridesmaid never the bride, as this is the third time in three races Chris Whittingham from Wheaton Aston has been the second member in Section E. Chris timed a Jean De Pauw 2 year old blue cock. He flew well in this race and was bred by Chris brother John who has had countless winners from his parents. Hi sire was also a blue and won 6 x 1 st positions up to when he was 4 years old, then he was retired for breeding. Chris Whittingham. 2 nd Section A is Jim Derbyshire from Whitchurch. Jim timed a 2 year blue cock who bloodlines on the dam s side are Ponderosa UK Stud Klak Janssen and Van Reet on the sire s side from a gift bird by Tony Crook of Thatcham. Jim races with the Andover Pigeon Club who race programme consists of NFC, BBC and CSCFC races. They also race inland from Purbeck most Saturdays with Basingstoke Pigeon Club and train weekly along the South Coast with the Club s own trailer.

Jim Derbyshire. With their second BBC Section G win under their belts this season Tony & Carol Welch from Chichester are letting their birds do the talking, which is more than can be said for Tony, who is a lovely gentleman but very modest. Trying to get information from him is like trying to get blood from a stone. Their first pigeon a blue yearling Janssen cock has flown every race with the South Coast Federation apart from one. He is flown on widowhood and this was his first race across the Channel. Tony would like to thank Mick Morter, Rob Parker and Rob Hampton for the kind donation of young birds given on Tony s flyaway.

Tony Welch. Provisional 2 nd, 3 rd and 4 th Section G is Crammond and Langstaff of Fontwell. Their first bird was a Dusarduyn which they bred from some pigeons sent to them from their good friends Green & Hilson which originate from Gordon Rigg of Congleton, Chesire. Their second pigeon is a NL rung Peter Van Osch cock, this cock was bought in a batch of young birds in 2010 and has turned out to be the best of the bunch he was provisional 4 th Section from NFC Cholet the week before. Their third pigeon is their fancied pigeon for NFC Tarbes, he is a Van De Wegen x Wim Muller he was clocked out of Tarbes as a yearling but could not go last year as he snapped his flights but this year he is on course having had a Carentan and Fougeres in the Fed, Tours with the BICC and this BBC Niort race so fingers crossed. The partnership had a good days racing yesterday also taking the first seven in the South Coast Fed from Exeter and 6 th, 9 th & 10 th the same Fed Messac. (Bring on the West Winds). Ian Crammond & Nigel Langstaff.

Sleeping Beauty. Convoyers Report With the 1005 birds loaded we made our way to Rownhams Services to meet up with our Secretary and the birds were watered there for two hours before making our way to the docks. The crossing was calm and very clear as was the journey to Niort, the temperature at was 19 degrees and when we reached Niort it was 29 degrees, so with the lorry positioned under the trees we had the birds fed and watered by four o'clock The forecast for Saturday was hot and sunny with a N.E wind so the plan was to get them away as early as possible. Once the sun had started to go down we repositioned the transporter for liberation the next day. Saturday dawned warm and bright with a moderate E.N.E wind blowing which decreased as the sun got up, early indications were that there was light rain to the north of us in the channel but would be gone by the time our birds reached the coast, with the strings cut and the sun rising and the temperature was 20 degrees we released at with the birds doing a half circle before clearing to the north. The journey back was nowhere near as hot as the previous day and 25% cloud cover for part of the journey and some very light drizzle between Rennes and Fougeres, but by this time our birds would passed this area two hours before. We all knew right from the start that with any east in the wind and combined with the distance that this was going to be a testing race and so it turned out to be but as always the fittest came through. This was my first time at this site and I have to say that I that the site is one of the better ones apart from the toilets, this is a state of the art stainless steel Tardis to one side of the site. Once I had used it and washed my hands I looked for the way to flush the WC but nothing, no levers or buttons so I opened the door to see if there were any instructions and then the door began to close and lock itself

with me inside and it went into automatic wash down, floors walls the lot with me inside need I say more, apart from now Clare is calling me Frank Spencer. My thanks to all concerned and especially to our head of catering, light entertainment and transportation, affectionately known amongst the convoyers as BBQ Bill. Nigel Rigiani Weather Report At 0530 hours Saturday morning thunder storms forecast by the Met Office developed over southern England. They migrated southwards over the channel to the east side of the Cherbourg Peninsula. These were clearly identified on the numerous rainfall radar charts available. They continued moving south over northern France weakening forming into rain showers. Again as forecast these rain showers petered out during the early morning. This effectively cleared and line of flight up through France and the channel from Niort to southern counties of England. I informed our convoyer Nigel of the overall weather situation and that the rain affecting areas of northern France would clear. He was confident with the flight path conditions and liberated at 06:00 hours. At the time of liberation winds over France were light from the north north east but as the morning progressed they gained in strength reaching 12 mph plus. This wind speed and direction was sustained throughout the pigeons whole journey home including the channel. The data recorded by the channel Met buoys confirmed wind strength and direction. Flying conditions were excellent from Niort to northern French coastline and across the channel. So to conclude the pigeons had to battle all the way through France and the channel against the winds until they reached southern England. Without doubt this factor played the major role in making this a very testing race for the BBC pigeons. Steve Appleby Telephone and Website verifications which may be subject to change.
