1 NATURA MONTENEGRINA, Podgorica, 2013, 12(1): ORIGINAL RESEARCH PAPER A CHECKLIST OF THYSANOPTERA (INSECTA) IN HAMEDAN PROVINCE, IRAN Majid MIRAB-BALOU 1*, Xiao-li TONG 2 and Xue-xin CHEN 3 1 Department of Plant Protection, College of Agriculture, Ilam University, Ilam, Iran 2 Department of Entomology, South China Agricultural University, Guangzhou , China 3 Institute of Insect Sciences, Zhejiang University, 866 Yuhangtang Road, Hangzhou , China *Corresponding author: majid.mirab@gmail.com SYNOPSIS Key words: Thysanoptera, checklist, taxonomy, new record, Hamedan, Iran. The Thysanoptera fauna of the Hamedan Province (Western Iran) was studied in The present checklist contains 84 species in 32 genera of Thysanoptera including new collecting places for thrips species in Hamedan Province (Western Iran). Among them, four subfamilies, 10 genera and 43 species are newly recorded for the fauna of this Province; and Mycterothrips glycines (Okamoto) is newly recorded for the fauna of Iran. The occurrence of Thrips, Frankliniella and Haplothrips species seems divers and should be investigated. INTRODUCTION Thysanoptera comprise an order of minute insects of considerable scientific and economic importance. Their habits range from forest, and grasslands, to gardens, and crops. Members of many species are fungivorous, phytophagous or carnivorous, or are gall makers or inquilines, and some are vectors of viral and bacterial diseases of plants, or are pollinators of flowers. In spite of their small size, generally drab coloration and obscure habits, they possess remarkable structural peculiarities, such as fringed wings, asymmetric punch and suck mouthparts (in which only the left mandible is developed), a protrusible sac-like arolium at the end of each tarsus, and propupal and pupal instars in their life histories (Heming, 1971). These unique characteristics of thrips have warranted their being recognized constituting a separate order of insects (Reyes, 1994). In Thysanoptera, about 6000 species are known from the world, and they are classified into two suborders and nine families (Mound, 2013). The suborder Tubulifera includes 3500 species in only one family Phlaeothripidae, whereas the suborder Terebrantia consists of eight families that include 2000 species. This order includes 206 species in 68 genera in Iran (Mirab-balou, 2011). 71
2 Natura Montenegrina 12(1), 2013 Species lists are important because this one needed to successfully document and understand the cause and consequences of biodiversity. The objective of this paper is to compile data on thrips fauna and their current geographic distribution in Hamedan Province. Figure 1: Map of Iran. Biogeographical Data: The Province of Hamedan is one of the 32 Provinces of Iran (Fig. 1). Its center is Hamedan city. The Province of Hamedan covers an area of 19,546 km 2. Other major cities of Hamedan Province are: Toyserkan, Nahavand, Malayer, Asad Abad, Bahar, Razan, and Kabudrahang. This Province is bounded on the north by Zanjan Province, on the south by Lorestan Province, on the east by Markazi Province, and on the west by Kermanshah and Kordestan Provinces (Fig. 1). Hamedan Province lies in a temperate mountainous region to the east of Zagros. The vast plains of the north and northeast of the Province are influenced by strong winds, that almost last throughout the year. Hamedan is in the vicinity of the Alvand mountains and has a cold, mountainous climate, with snowy winters. In fact, it is one of the coldest cities in Iran. The temperature may drop below -30 C on the coldest days. Heavy snowfall is common during winter and this can persist for periods of up to two months. During the short summer, the weather is mild, pleasant, and mostly sunny. Full information is availabe at: MATERIALS AND METHODS The checklist of the thrips fauna of Hamedan Province was compiled after a faunistic investigation during The present checklist is part of our researches on Iranian thrips that have been done during four last years. All thrips 72

Type specimens are deposited in the Institute of Insect Sciences, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China (ZJUH) and in the Insect Collection, Department of Entomology, South China Agricultural University (SCAU). 4 Natura Montenegrina 12(1), 2013 For each species new collecting place, previous records and distribution are given. Species newly recorded for Hamedan Province are marked with an asterisk. ABBREVIATION: MPGBAS - Medicinal Plants Garden of Bu-Ali Sina, Hamedan. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION In this study, we investigated a new area of the Province, which has not been investigated before. The present checklist contains 84 species in 32 genera of Thysanoptera including new collecting places for thrips species in the Hamedan Province. Most of these species were collected from suborder Terebrantia, especially thrips species in the subfamily Thripinae. Among them, four subfamilies, 10 genera and 43 species are newly recorded for the fauna of this Province. In addition, Mycterothrips glycines (Okamoto) is newly recorded for the fauna of Iran. Distributaion maps of these species are shown in figures 2 5 (according to genera and families). FAMILY AEOLOTHRIPIDAE (Fig. 2) (1) Genus AEOLOTHRIPS HALIDAY 1.
