2 Parrots of Mangarrayi Country This outline of Mangarrayi parrots has been developed to assist with the passing on and promotion of Mangarrayi biological knowledge. This booklet is based on the traditional knowledge of Jessie Garalnganjak Roberts and Sheila Yenybarra Conway from Jilkminggan. This booklet was prepared with funding from NAILSMA and the NRMB(NT). 3 Lirrawi Red-tailed Black-cockatoo Calyptorhynchus banksii Large black cockatoo with a big strong beak; tail feathers with red panels in males or orange-yellow barred black in females. These birds are some people s dreaming (i.e. gamarra). They are not eaten. 4 Ngerrjngerrjmin Sulphur-crested Cockatoo Cacatua galerita Large white cockatoo with black beak and legs, has distinctive yellow crest that stands up when they are excited. The name of the bird sounds like the call it makes. He warns people that payback is coming. 5 Ngelele Little Corella Cacatua sanguinea White cockatoo with a small white crest and white beak. It has bare skin around its eye that is a bluish colour. This bird is always found in the jungle areas on Mangarrayi country. You can always hear it. He has dreaming and culture. The feathers from this bird are used for ceremony decorations. 6 Wiligwilig Galah Eolophus roseicapilla Small pink and grey cockatoo with a small white crest on head. Males have a brown eye and females a pink eye. The galah is good to eat. Mostly they are caught when they are young in hollow nests but kids will also shanghai them out of the tree. 7 Welejban Rainbow Lorikeet Trichoglossus haematodus Small brightly coloured lorikeet with a blue head, red bill and a red collar around its neck. The wings and tail are green, the belly is blue-black. These birds have a dreamtime story; they were hit with a firestick, that s how they got the red stripe across the chest. 8 Yirrilinyin Varied Lorikeet Psitteuteles versicolor Small greenish lorikeet with bright red cap and yellow cheeks; chest pale pink with yellow streaks; body and wings a pale green. There are plenty of these birds on Mangarrayi country they look like budgerigars but they are bigger. 9 Manbajmanbaj Red-winged Parrot Aprosmictus erythropterus Medium sized green parrot with bright red wings and a red beak; males have a deep blue back. 10 Wirirrwirirr Cockatiel, Weero Nymphicus hollandicus Smallish grey bird with bright red cheeks and distinctive crest. The male has a yellow face and crest as well. This bird loves to play in the rain.
