APRIL 7TH A whopper storm hit April 7th, bringing high winds with gusts of 78 mph on the Cape, and 60 mph across the dock. Waves crashed over the unprepared dock. One fisherman was injured (broken leg) rescuing crab pots during the storm. Winds swept through the valley as well, leaving many without power, and trees blocking roads and highways. April showers bring May flowers goes the poem, but these April storms are far from showers. PINNIPEDS Join Shoreline Education Awareness on Saturday, April 15th for another in its 2017 seminar series beginning at 9 AM at the Oregon Institute of Marine APRIL 7, 2017 MANGLED CRAB POTS Biology s Boathouse in Charleston. Dr. Jan Hodder will present The Pinnipeds of Cape Arago. Dr. Hodder is Senior Lecturer and Academic Coordinator at OIMB. Dr. Hodder s research interests are diverse, ranging from the ecology of marine birds and mammals to the biological consequences of introduced species. She has also served as Director of the Center for Ocean Science Education Excellence (COSEE) Pacific Partnerships. A field trip will be included as part of the activities. Join Jan to observe pinnipeds such as Steller and California Sea Lions, Elephant Seals and Harbor Seals. We may find Gray Whales as well. Doors will open at 8:30 AM for registration. Pre-registration is not necessary. The seminar is free for Shoreline Education for Awareness members! A $5 donation for nonmembers is recommended. Snacks and coffee/tea will be available. SOU AND SOCC PARTNER ELEMENTARY EDUCATION COOS BAY, OR Southwestern Oregon Community College is pleased to announce that beginning fall of 2017 Southern Oregon University (SOU), in collaboration with Southwestern, is launching a new satellite program for a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education with an option to earn a teaching license as well. The program aims to help fill an employment gap within Coos, Curry and Western Douglas counties by providing a path to licensure for local residents in a region that is in high need of qualified teachers. The new satellite program is similar to a partnership between SOU and Klamath Community College that began fall of 2016. Financial aid is available to those who qualify. Student teaching takes place in or near your community. Options are available for people who already hold a bachelor degree. Courses are predominately online or in the evenings, with only one Saturday a month commitment for a face-toface course at the Higher Education Center in Medford or Ashland. It is a grow your own philosophy with the majority of courses scheduled to meet the needs of, but not limited to, people currently working for a school district. AUDITIONS BANDON, OR The Bandon Playhouse, in conjunction with the 75 th Anniversary of the original stage version, is holding auditions for a full-scale musical revival of The Wizard of Oz. The successful team of Jeff Norris (Director) and Paul Hay (Producer) are back together to partner on this musical. The Wizard of Oz is a heartwarming tale of magic and fantasy, good and evil, and family and friendship. Based on L. Frank Baum s novel and the 1939 film, this musical adaption of The Wizard of Oz was originally premiered at the Municipal Theatre of St. Louis in 1942, with music by Harold Arlen and lyrics by E.Y. Harburg. The score is full of tunes from the timeless film such as We re Off To See the Wizard, If I Only Had A Brain, The Merry Old Land of Oz, and - of course -
Over The Rainbow. At least 8 main characters are needed which includes three women and five men, however they need a cast of all ages ranging from 5 to 75. Lots of extras are needed, and anyone who would like to be a part of the production, not as a main character, can be chosen for parts including munchkins, crows/trees (singing), Ozians, beauticians, manicurists, jitterbugs (dancing), snowman, winkies, flying monkeys, and cyclone dances, many of these may include some singing as backup," Jeff Norris, the director said. This is good exposure and a great experience for new actors who want to be in the theater. In preparation of the auditions, Norris said there will be reading from the script. He wants people to keep in mind that a stage performance is different from the movie. the Bandon Playhouse. We also understand that this production will be presented in late summer and we wanted to make sure we got in front of family vacations since practices will be held in May, June and July. Auditions will be held on Saturday, April 29 th and Sunday, April 30 th, with children auditions will be from 1:00 to 3:00 and the adults from 3:00 to 6:00 that same evening. Call backs will be scheduled for Monday, May 1 st at 5:00pm (if needed). All auditions will be held at the Sprague Community Theater. Performances will be August 10 th - 13 th, 17 th -20 th, and 24 th -27 th, 2017. Show Times are 7:00 pm on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, with Sunday matinees starting at 2:00pm. With such a large cast and stage support is truly needed, so the upcoming production of "The Wizard of Oz" at the Sprague Community Theater has many opportunities for folks interested in theater whether on stage or behind the scenes. FERAL CAT ROUNDUP By Tobe Porter It s seldom easy to get your beloved cat Puff in a carrier for a trip to the vet. It is impossible with feral cats, so they must be trapped. Imagine being faced with the daunting task of trapping 75 feral cats and transporting them in the traps/transfer cages to S/Nipped in Coos Bay. (Neutering cost: about $5,250.) The cats are brought back to their original location or to a specially built cat shack. More about that later; let s stay focused on dealing with the reality of 75 cats. How could that happen? It happens like this: one day a cat shows up in the back yard. He looks hungry and scared. You ignore him, hoping he will disappear. He comes back so eventually you put out some leftovers. He gobbles those up, comes back and brings a pal. Two cats become 5, 5 become 25, 25 become..you get it. Help! 75 cats with no end in sight. The Port Orford Friends of Feral Cats are asked to trap them all. Here s the bottom line it is much, much easier and tons less expensive to trap 2 or 5 feral cats. Don t wait, please.
