3 MISSOURI STOCKER FEEDER QUALITY ASSURANCE PROGRAM The following is a guide for the veterinarian and his staff in the procedure of the Missouri Stocker Feeder Quality Assurance Program Veterinary Certification The veterinarian obtains his certification for the program by attending a workshop that is held during the Missouri Veterinary Medical Association s annual meeting or by being instructed by one of the program committee members in their district. The veterinarian will be given some materials and shortly after be provided with a certificate and certification identification number. (V for veterinarian two digits representing the year, and four digits. Together, this will be your certification number, example: V ) See page 3 for sample Producer Certification You are now ready to start certifying your client/producer. 1. You may hold a short informal or formal session with one or more of your clients, either in your office, other facility or chute side. If you choose the classroom setting, we do have a slide show or a powerpoint presentation available. We will also provide your clients with Missouri Beef Quality Assurance Program, a guide to educate them in the quality assurance aspects of the program. 2. For all client/producers being certified through your session you will need the date on which you give the instruction and their name and address. Farm name is optional. This information will go on the MSFQAP Producer Certification Request form. If you do not have a form, you may also fax us the information or call the information in to our office. See page 4 for sample 3. Our office staff will then prepare a separate certificate for each client/producer that you have certified. These certificates will be mailed to your client/producer and a copy to you upon your request. You are encouraged to keep a record of your producers and their numbers. (P for producer, two digits representing the year, and a four digit number that together is the producer number, example: P ) see page 3 for sample MSFQAP and BQA What is the difference? 2
4 BQA (or MO-BQA in Missouri) is the national beef industry program designed to build consumer confidence through education and promotion of beef quality assurance practices to beef producers. A written test qualifies a producer to be BQA certified by the State Cattlemen s Association. BQA certified does not mean MSFQAP certified. The MSFQA Program builds upon the principles of the Beef Quality Assurance guideline by assuring buyers that cattle at market with MSFQAP ear tags have undergone the vaccination and management requirements of the MSFQAP standardized health program. Producers are certified in the MSFQAP by their certified veterinarian after the veterinarian has trained the producer to meet the program s requirements. Producers can take the written BQA test at the time of their MSFQAP certification. (answers to the test on page 5,6) But the BQA written test does not certify the producer in MSFQAP. That is done by the producer s MSFQAP certified veterinarian. Producers will receive their BQA number from the Missouri Cattlemen s Association. Producers will receive their MSFQAP number from their veterinarian. 3

12 On The Farm Procedures You are now ready to make a call to the producer s farm and give the appropriate vaccinations and tag the cattle. Please refer to the enclosed information on the 4 levels of the MSFQAP. See page 7 1. You will then take your supplies and make a visit to the producer s herd. Naturally you will see that the cattle get the appropriate injections/medications for the level of he program that the producer is participating. 2. Take Part 1 (p. 13) of the certificate and be sure to press hard, as this form is multiple copies, and write the Owner/producer s name, address and certification number, as well as your name and certification number. 3. The single line labeled Identification no(s): is where you list the tags used. For example: H , and so on. This designates that you have used the Red tags, identified by the letter H and tagged 10 head of cattle. Each tag will have a corresponding letter for the level it represents. 4. If applicable, list the date weaned and/or the dates of the breeding season. 5. Then check the appropriate boxes under each level of the program for which the producer is participating. 6. At the bottom of the page there is a space for the owner to sign and date. This date will more than likely be the date when the work was performed. 7. Finally, separate the forms. The white copy is for the owner; the canary copy is for the sale barn to give to the purchaser of the cattle. The pink copy is for your records and please mails us the gold copy, to the MVMA office as soon as your processing is done. This information will then be logged into the computer, under your name for each individual producer. 11

The veterinarian will then fill in the appropriate information in the table provided. 4. Finally, the white copy is for the owner/producer, the canary goes to the sale barn with the cattle to be given to the buyer and the pink copy is for the veterinarian s record. 15

18 Backgrounder Program Please see the enclosed brochure for the MSFQAP, MVMA, Backgrounder Program. (p. 17, 18) This is a program for purchased cattle. You will also find an example of the Missouri Stocker/Feeder Backgrounding Program form within. (p. 19) 1. The top of the form provides a space for the owner/producer s name, address, description of calves, weaning date and ear tag numbers, as mentioned in #3 of the farm procedure. 2. The veterinarian will then fill out all appropriate spaces in the form provided. 3. Signature lines are provided at the bottom of the form for the veterinarian, his certificate number and the owner/producer and the date that this service was performed. 4. The white copy will be the owner/producer s; the canary will be for the future buyer and the pink copy is for the veterinarian s record.
