4 4 THE 40TH BAIN FALLON MEMORIAL LECTURES A higher standard of care Book online at eiseverywhere.com/bf18exhibitionbooking A pragmatic approach to harnessing technology and managing the unique demands of equine practice. Equine medicine is an environment where you are dealing with a range of personalities. Everyone from the passionate animal lover with a couple of hobby horses, through to trainers and performance managers whose professional livelihood rests on delivering the best possible performance from a patient who has been bred for purpose. In this environment results matter, and as an equine veterinarian you are measured on your ability to make informed, evidence-based decisions which support timely and effi cient action in managing the patients health and performance. Here we explore a few questions which aim to address how contemporary approaches to diagnostics can help you meet the demands of equine practice and elevate the standard of care available. 1. Are you assessing band neutrophils? There are many important indicators of infl ammation but the ability to detect a left shift supports a timely and accurate assessment of your patient s condition. Only the latest in-clinic haematology analysers offer the technology that enables you to understand if bands are present in minutes. 2. Do you know the difference between wet & dry chemistry analysis? Patented dry chemistry technologies are available which fi lter out sample impurities such as icterus, haemolysis and lipaemia to deliver reliable and accurate diagnostics in-house. 3. Can you visualise serial bloodwork in a simple way? Cloud based viewing portals are all the rage and diagnostic service providers are increasingly getting more sophisticated with how results can be viewed, trended and shared. Seeing serial blood results in one view will enhance your ability to see critical changes and monitor patient status. It s a must in the modern age of medicine. 4. Are you offering a fl exible service which tailors the workup to the client s needs? Instrumentation and service providers should offer a fl exible solution to support a cost effective and targeted approach. Again, a review of the options available, suggests that you can invest in solutions which offer you the ability to run full profi les or be more selective when focusing on muscle enzymes, liver panels, or the ongoing assessment of infl ammatory markers in very cost effective ways. 5. Does your diagnostic service provider have a proven track record for quality? As a leader in the research and development of veterinary diagnostics and recognition the world over as the leader in their fi eld, IDEXX Laboratories is a stand out performer. Testament to this was their selection as the diagnostic partner for the 2012 and 2016 Olympic games. To find out how IDEXX Laboratories could help you, please contact or via at IDEXX-ANZ-Sales@idexx.com
