4 Dr Adrian Witham BVSc MANZCVS GCUT DipACVIM (SAIM) Lecturer in Small Animal Medicine, The Dr Katie Lott BVSc (Hons) MANZCVS Small Animal Resident and Masters Candidate, The SPEAKERS Adrian is a 2000 graduate from the. After several years in private small animal practice in and locum work in the UK, he completed a one year rotating internship at the Liverpool, before completing a three year small animal medicine residency at Massey University, New Zealand. Adrian worked at Massey University as a consulting lecturer in E-Learning before returning to the in Adrian is a Head Subject examiner for both Small Animal Medicine & Canine Memberships, Vice President of the Small Animal Medicine Chapter, and Science Week conference convenor. He is a Diplomat of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine by examination since He has recently completed a Graduate Certificate in University Teaching. Adrian is the head of the DVM-4 small animal medicine rotation, program director for University s ACVIM residency, and academic coordinator of the Veterinary Hospital s uvet continuing professional development program. After graduating with honours from the Queensland, Katie worked in private small animal practice before completing a small animal internship. She is a member of the Australian and New Zealand College in Small Animal Medicine by examination. Dr. Katie Lott is a final year small animal medicine resident at the. She is completing masters evaluating the effectiveness of a continuous glucose monitoring system (CGMS) in monitoring diabetic dogs and cats. Dr Lauren Lacorcia BVSc (Hons) MVSc MANZCVSc DipACVIM (SAIM) Lecturer in Small Animal Medicine, The Ms Carol Bradbury Associate in Veterinary Education, Cert IV VN, Cert IV AWPT, Cert III Health (Sterilising Technician) A graduate, Lauren completed an Internship in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery at the. In 2003, Lauren became a member of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in Small Animal Medicine. In 2005, she became a Resident in Small Animal Internal Medicine at The Minnesota, College of Veterinary Medicine, USA. In 2007, Lauren concurrently completed a Master of Veterinary Science degree through the University of, investigating feline parasitology and the utility of bronchoalveolar lavage in the diagnosis of feline aelurostrongylosis. She became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Science in Small Animal Internal Medicine in Following her residency training at The Minnesota, Lauren worked at two busy, private specialty referral practices in the United Kingdom before returning home, to join the Faculty as Lecturer in Small Animal Medicine. Her fields of interest include urinary disease, gastrointestinal disease, hepatology, immune mediated and haematologic diseases and respiratory medicine. From Carol was the Head of the Central Sterilising Supply Service and Supervisor of the Small Animal and Equine Operating Theatres. During this time she participated in the clinical training of undergraduate veterinary students in aseptic technique, operating room etiquette, introduction to surgical skills and sterilising processes at the s Veterinary Teaching School, Werribee. Carol achieved the status of Associate Fellow of The Higher Education Academy (RVC, London) in In 2009, Carol became a member of the Biomaterial s Surgical Research Unit working with Glenn Edwards, supporting cardiovascular research in addition to delivering surgical training to undergraduates. For a period of 15 years, Carol facilitated surgical workshops for Sydney University s Post Graduation Foundation, working with surgical icons, Bruce Christie, Glenn Edwards and Wing Tip Wong in continuing education in the surgical discipline. She also runs nursing workshops in suturing technique, aseptic technique and instrument care, sterilizing & processing skills. Dr Julien Dandrieux BSc Dr med vet DACVIM (SAIM) PhD candidate, The Julien is a veterinary graduate from the Bern, Switzerland. He completed an internship at the Bern, then completed a combined small animal residency at the Bern and Louisiana State University. He obtained Diplomate status from the American College of Veterinary Medicine in Small Animal Internal Medicine in He has worked as a specialist locum in the UK, Clinician Teacher at the University of Liverpool, and a Medicine Consultant for IDEXX. Julien is a PhD candidate at the, researching the use of confocal endomicroscopy in dogs. He has numerous publications and has presented internationally on aspects of small animal internal medicine.
5 Dr Natalie Courtman BVSc MVS MANZCVSc DipACVP, Lecturer in Veterinary Clinical Pathology, The Dr Jacqui Ley BVSc (Hons), (Veterinary Behaviour), PhD, CMAVA, DECVBM-CA Ms Wendy Smith RVN Dip AVN (Surgical) SPEAKERS Natalie Courtman worked as a veterinary pathologist at IDEXX Pathology since Her work at IDEXX included routine haematologyand biochemistry review and interpretation, cytology, staff training, and contribution to quality control processes in the laboratory. Natalie also worked occasionally as a veterinarian in a local small animal clinic during this time. She graduated from the Sydney in 1993 and spent nine years working in small animal practices in Australia and England. During this time she completed a Masters degree in Veterinary Clinical Studies through Murdoch University and attained membership of the Australian & New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in small animal medicine. In 2003 Natalie commenced a residency in veterinary clinical pathology at the Royal Veterinary College in London before returning to Australia in 2005 to a research support role for the Australian Phenomics Facility of the John Curtin School of Medical Research at the Australian National University. She achieved membership of the Australian & New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in Pathology in 2008 and became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologist in clinical pathology in Natalie is also a trustee of the Australian Veterinary Association Benevolent Fund and has a strong interest in student and practitioner welfare. Dr Jacqui Ley is a registered specialist in Veterinary Behaivoural Medicine. She is the newest Fellow of the Behaviour Chapter of ANZCVS and a past president, a diplomat of the European College of Animal Welfare and Behavioural Medicine and has a PhD in psychology describing a model and a questionnaire for assessing canine personality at Monash University as part of the Animal Welfare Science Centre. She has also investigated, with Dr. Pauleen Bennett, what makes a good relationship between an owner and their dog. Other research interests include the Human-Animal relationship and factors affecting this, tests for measuring fear and other behaviours and emotions in dogs and the social relationships in dogs and cats. She is also involved in studies investigating diagnosis and treatment of behaviour problems in animals. She has been involved in teaching the Graduate Certificate in Animal Welfare at Monash University. She has contributed to text books and regularly presents original research at international conferences as well as conducting continuing education for veterinarians on the diagnosis and treatment of mental health disorders in animals. She has presented to dog owners, dog trainers, dog walkers, veterinary nurses, and dog clubs about owning dogs, understanding dogs, cats, horses and other pets and helping them fit into our confusing and complex world. Meg is a registered veterinarian and a Senior Lecturer at the Northern Institute of TAFE (NMIT). Over the past three years, Meg has lead a team of internal and external educational and industry representatives, in the development of the recently accredited Associate Degree of Veterinary Nursing for NMIT. She is a passionate believer in the importance of access to quality higher education for all members of the veterinary team. When she is not busy helping students to learn, she runs around after her children, husband and dog, (or hides away and reads fantasy novels!). Meg is actively involved in the AVA, being a member of the Victorian Executive committee, and the treasurer of the National Special Interest Group Veterinarians in Education, Research and Academia (VERA). Meg graduated from the with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science (First Class Honours) in 1993, and worked in small animal, emergency and welfare practices in over the following decade. She also completed an internship and Master of Veterinary Studies (Small Animal Medicine and Surgery) at the during this time. Over last eight years, Meg has moved into the academic world, and is now a senior lecturer in the Department of Higher Education Primary Industries at NMIT, and completed a Graduate Certificate in Higher Education (Curriculum, Teaching and Learning) in 2012 through La Trobe University. She has a special interest in Applied Functional Animal Anatomy and Physiology, and currently lectures to NMIT Bachelor of Equine Studies and Polytechnic Bachelor of Agriculture and Technology students. Wendy is originally from Norfolk, England but moved to Australia 15 years ago. She began working as a veterinary nurse in 1986 in small animal practice and since qualifying has worked in small and large animal first opinion, small animal and equine referral, including six months in mixed practice in Whistler, Canada and five years as a senior nurse at the Royal Veterinary College in London. Wendy has also worked in a busy emergency centre and spent several years teaching at TAFE in NSW and Box Hill Institute. Wendy co wrote the learning and assessment materials for the Diploma in Veterinary Nursing (General Practice). Despite her love of veterinary nursing, Wendy is not currently working in practice but maintains a keen interest in the profession.
