4 MCVMA Newsletter March January July Notes from the MCVMA President Dear MCVMA members, Not much new to report this month! We are currently in the process of nominating students from UC Davis for the MCVMA Student Scholarship award. This year we are awarding two students $1,500 each. The board will also be meeting just before our next MCVMA meeting later this month so will have news to report regarding the technician scholarship proposed several months ago. Please contact me with anything you would like to discuss at our next meeting in March. I would also like to get some ideas for our next social. Please me directly at jfarese@nbvetsurg.org with ideas. Thanks, Jim Farese MCVMA President Open 24/7 for Emergencies Dermatology Internal Medicine Oncology Ophthalmology Surgery 4 pescm.com 901 East Francisco Blvd San Rafael, 94901
5 CVMA Update MCVMA Newsletter March 2018 New laws that affect small businesses: SB 63 Parental Leave Act For businesses with > 20 employees. Employees get 12 weeks of family unpaid leave per year. Employee keeps health care. Employee must have been employed for 12 mos or more and greater than 1250 hours of work. AB 168 Prohibits a business from asking for prior salary history. However, THE CANDIDATE can request a pay scale for the job. AB 1008 "Ban the Box" Prohibits collecting criminal history information prior to a conditional job offer. If a job is denied after a conditional job offer and the collection of criminal history, then the applicant must be informed of the decision and reasons for decision IN WRITING. EXCLUDED: Veterinarians, licensed RVTs and Assistants with controlled substance permits. CVMA Pac is a bipartisan political voice for veterinarians and it exists to elect, educate AND establish relationships with legislators. Please give generously - they are looking out for you! Examples of current goals of CVMA Pac: - Good Cannabinoid legislation (CVMA sponsored) that will protect veterinarians (both legally and with VMB) who discuss and possibly recommend cannabinoid products for their patients, similar to protections put into place for California physicians. - Clarify current position on blood banks - Yes, whole blood from a dog/cat can be collected by a hospital and then given to another patient. Currently, law is vague or negative on this (though the law is not intended to regulate this action). - Allow for partial prescriptions to be given without a VCPR to victims of a mass disaster. REMINDER: For license renewal in 2019 or 2020, get one hour of CE on the judicious use of antibiotics. The courses do not need to be specifically registered, just on the topic of judicious use of antibiotics. Thank you, Peter Bowie CVMA Delegate 5
