2 Janary 1, 1979 Gide to the Herpetofana of Central Minnesota Region 3 - East This preliminary gid~ has been prepared as a reference to the occrrence and distribtion of reptiles and amphibians of Region 3 - East in Central Minnesota. Taonomy and identification are based on 11 A Field Gide to Reptiles and Amphibians" by Roger Conant {Second Edition, 1975). Figre 1 is a map of this region. Three species are represented by two sbspecies -- the eastern garter snake, smooth green snake, and chors frog. For species are as yet hypothetical for this region -- the five- 1 ined skink, mdpppy, central newt, and for-toed salamander. Species of special interest inclde the wood trtle, Blanding's trtle, fivelined skink (if present), red-backed salamander, central newt (if present), for-toed s.s.

3 -2- salamander (if present), and smooth green snake. Any sightings of these species shold be recorded and sent to the nongame spervisor. Conty records for tnis region are given on the following pages. If yo enconter any new conty records, the speciman shold be captred and either photographed from several angles or preserved in isopropyl alcohol. Record the collector's name and address, date, conty, township, range, section nmber (or distance and direction from nearest town), and the habitat in which the animal was fond. The nongame spervisor shold then be contacted concerning disposition of the specimen. Unless otherwise specified, all conty records on the following pages are derived from Reptiles and Amphibians of Minnesota by Walter J. Breckenridge.
