2 Who let the dogs out!! RESCUE REPORT Rescue took in 5 Irish Setters in a week! We have 7 year old Mya, husband died, house is being foreclosed, and the wife is moving to California to live with her daughter. Mya likes other dogs, is very quiet, has been spayed and is up to date on shots. Zues is maybe 3 yrs. Found lying in the front yard of a home in Ashtabula, efforts to find his owners have failed. He's very friendly with dogs, cats, kids. Well housetrained, shots, neutered. Sullivan is 8 months old, just needs house training. A big happy fellow! The family didn't realize he would require training and care as he got older. His 2 month puppy collar became embedded in his neck by 8 months old!! Chester was given to rescue by his owner, she needs heart surgery and a long recuperation so felt it was best to find him a new home. Chester is 6 years, a housedog, neutered, shots, not the kind of dog to play outside, he's happy to be by your side. Chewy was adopted from ISCO rescue at 2 years, but now at 7 years, a divorce and the kids are gone to college, so he was returned to us, as he was alone all the time. Chewy joined his new home in Columbus, Ohio today. We will again be doing an ISCO Rescue Booth at the Cleveland IX dog shows- Dec Volunteers and their Irish Setters are welcome to join the fun! See everyone at the December Christmas party. Pat Jesson, ISCO Rescue Coordinator Bits and Pieces Please note that there will be NO MEETING IN NOVEMBER. The CHRISTMAS PARTY IS DECEMBER 1 st, at Ferfolia s. Details are in the enclosed flyer. Please try to join us! Also, Donna had not heard from anyone as far as dropping or changing their awards. As previously mentioned, Donna does not have a computer, so you can me, or call Donna at She has decided to have Connie print the awards as they were last year. Please look them over, and let her know it there are any changes. If you want to discontinue, or offer an award, this is the time to speak up. There may be some that become available, and we will let those interested know. We need to work on this, as the deadline for applying is January 15, I must confirm that the award cost will be drastically reduced as we have dropped the pewter due to the rising cost. We think you will be pleased with the replacement. We anticipate the cost to offer an award to be around $ We have had a rough week for our members. As many of you know Shari is in the ICU on a ventilator. I wrote a bit about this elsewhere in this newsletter. Thanks for your concern and prayers, we do appreciate it.
3 Vince Lindeman had a recent hip replacement and is now back at home. I hope his was as easy as mine, and that he is well on his way to recovery. The hip replacement surgery was a snap. Don t take that figuratively Vince! Ron had cataract surgery on the 17 th and Shirley was right, it was a piece of cake. I sure hope so as I am scheduled for it on November 7 th. Whoever thought of the term Golden Years must have been deranged? The only thing gold about it is the cost. Barb Johnstone had another mishap. Tom was fixing their daughter s door with a rubber mallet and gave it one last swing, when the mallet let loose, and flew right into Barb s mouth. It broke her tooth, and caused quite a bit of bruising. No, she did not throw it back, and did not press charges! We hope you are feeling better! Sue Musil is on crutches with a bad knee. MRI shows nothing, so we hope her knee repairs itself soon. Especially since Sue has a new granddaughter, Emily, born on October 26 th. Congratulations Sue, I know the new addition will keep you hopping. No pun intended! On a brighter note, Mike Heasley came to our October meeting, and proudly announced that he was Breeder of the Year in the Pittsburgh club. I better mention that the club is a Tropical Fish Club. I always thought fish just bred themselves! Congratulations Mike, and I hope this is not where you get the fish for you great fish fries. Just kidding, because I know you are also an avid fisherman! Connie was in California for a week, so as soon as she gets rid of the jet lag you will have the newsletter! Jackie THE SWEETEST DAY FROM HELL This has been a really rough week for us. Our Golden, Maggie, had to have emergency surgery on Saturday, October 20 th. She had not been feeling well, no temperature, loss of appetite, lethargic, and just not her Golden self. We were convinced it was hemangiosarcoma, a blood cancer that attacks the organs and is responsible for the deaths of 20% of all Golden Retrievers. We had a blood count done on the day before, which showed an elevated white count. The vet thought it could be the blood cancer, or pyometra, since she had recently been in season. After an ultra sound on Saturday morning, which showed fluid in her uterus, we knew she needed surgery, even if it had to prove one issue over the other. We knew if it was the blood cancer, he would have to euthanize her on the table, as there is nothing that anyone can do, and they only have a matter of two or three weeks after diagnosis.
4 Shari and I sat in the car waiting for the surgery to be over. He said it would be less than an hour, and after 45 minutes, out walks a vet technician with a bouquet of flowers. We were thoroughly convinced that this was the way they told you that Maggie was no longer with us. As she continued to walk by our car, we remembered it was Sweetest Day and we were very relieved. We decided to go into the waiting room, when Pat, our vet, came out to say it was pyometra, and the surgery went well. Who would have thought we would be so excited about her having such a terrible thing. In about 30 minutes, we were on our way home with a bit groggy, stapled Maggie, but she was with us! Our elation ended a bit later when Shari had a bleeding issue, and being on a blood thinner, Ron took her to the ER. She was admitted for testing and procedures, and on the following Wednesday, when we felt she would be coming home, she was found unresponsive and not breathing. She had 5 doctors working on her on the way to ICU. She was intubated and sedated, and was actually on life support as she could not breathe on her own. As of today, October 29 th, she still cannot sustain breath and still in intubated. They have tried twice to remove the tube. but to no avail. She will eventually go to rehab and have to have a C- Pap for sleep apnea. As you can imagine, we had the worst Sweetest Day possible, and that is why I missed the ISCO meeting. Ron saved some money and had to eat with the group himself. He did bring me some Matzo Ball Soup! Maggie is doing great, and hopefully in a few days, so will Shari. Thank you for all your thoughts and prayers! Jackie
