Greetings fellow CNASA members It s not official yet, but Fall is upon us - the days are getting shorter all the time! It almost seems as if we lose 5 minutes of daylight every day lately, and a lot of the trees are dropping leaves already. The summer was pretty quiet in terms of CNASA activities except for Nancy Guerin s Herding Trials in Portneuf, Quebec, Tanya Wheeler's Herding Trials in Thunder Bay, Ontario, and just this past week Leah McBride s Herding Trials in Okotoks, Alberta. It s wonderful to see so much herding activity in different parts of the county this year it would be even MORE wonderful to see a herding event in every Zone next year What isn t wonderful for the club is the fact that we have lost our accreditation for Obedience (and thus also Rally) because we have been way too long between CNASA sanctioned matches and trials I must confess that I was in complete ignorance of the CKC Rule stating that a club must hold a trial within a three year time period in order to retain its accreditation! I had thought that once accreditation was given to a club that was it! Mea Culpa life really is an ongoing learning experience! This adds an extra level of difficulty for our National Chairs, who now must find another club to run the Obedience and Rally for the National next year. Fortunately there is an active club in Thunder Bay that will be willing to help us out But in order to ensure that we will have a proper mechanism within the club to monitor these kinds of issues we have set up a Performance Committee, which will be chaired by Leah Swatko. Work with this committee is on hold until after Leah gets home from the ASCA National (September 20 th to 28 th ) after which she ll probably be asking for people from all the Zones to work on the Committee. In Conformation there have been CNASA Boosters this summer in Quebec and Nova Scotia. There s another Booster coming up in PEI in October and one in Alberta in November. We also have two Regional Specialties on the horizon! Manitoba will hold a Regional in November, and Ontario will hold a Regional along with two Boosters November 29 th to December 1 st.. Planning is ongoing for the 2014 National! It s going to be another wonderful celebration of our wonderful Aussies, but as always for huge events like the National, help and support from the whole membership is always appreciated! If you can offer your time and talent to Tanya and Rhonda and their committee please don t be shy send an and let them know what you would like to do to help. ALL offers of help will be welcome. Wishing you all a wonderful autumn with your Aussies. Until next time

CNASA Alberta Herding Trials Report by Leah McBride Well, it seems all the worry and stress was worth it, we have survived our CKC Herding trails held here at No Chicken Ranch in Okotoks, Alberta the weekend of September 7 & 8. I could never have done this without my fabulous support team. To my family, Casey and Mini, thank you for all your help and support leading up to the Trials. Mini, thank you for running for ribbons and groceries, timing, taking pictures and working stock at the end of a very long weekend. To our wonderful hosts Jerry Kurbatoff and Billie Richardson, we had some ups and downs and all arounds with the weather but thank you for opening your home to us all and providing good stock and a wonderful facility to trial in. To Chelsey Hinkley and Finn for working stock as well at the end of the day when we needed you most, thank you, you rock! Thank you to Trudy Vicklund who worked stock in the pens for us all day Saturday in less than wonderful weather, you were our saviour, we never could have pulled off the 3 trials with the delays without your expert skills. My Judges, Dave Vicklund and Tami Butterwick were extremely positive and encouraging to all and made it a very positive experience for everyone. Last but not least to Rob Taylor and Payton Butterwick for being timers and scribes and always having a smile on their faces. We had several breeds entered, Aussies, Kelpies, Cattle Dogs, several Cardigan Corgi s, a couple of Rotties, a Belgian Shepherd, German Shepherd and a spunky little Sheltie. Saturday gave us a run for our money with soaking rains and lightning strikes all around us we put everything on hold and feared having to cancel one if not all the trials but everyone was so supportive. We did manage to finally get going and everyone agreed to just plug on through and we managed to get all 3 trials completed on Saturday, though it was a long day indeed, many thanks to our judge Dave Vicklund for encouraging everyone to continue on. The first Arena trial only saw 2 Qualifying dogs, both in the Tested class, Khaos the Rottie and my Garth(Colanna s Party On), to finish Khaos s HT title and give Garth his 1st leg. Trial 2 saw some clearer skies, some better luck and some very nice runs including a Q for Mini and Pirate (Colanna s Buried Treasure) in Herding Tested as well as a 1st in Class for Chelsey and Finn( Ch Casselcreek Good Cop Bad Cop). High in Trial went to CNASA member Jerry Kurbatoff and his Kelpie, Jed. We scrambled quickly to get the Stock Dog course set up before darkness set in and went on to see some very Continued.

nice runs there as well. Our token Aussie running in Stock Dog Advanced this Trial, Dan(MS Dan The Man Has) made a really nice run with an 82.5 for a 2nd place finish. I might add that Dan is the only Aussie to ever qualify for the American Border Collie Finals, running in Nursery, where he will be competing next month. Again Jerry and Jed were our HIT dog with a very nice 90 point run. Sunday morning saw much nicer weather, blue skies and sunshine and everyone ready to roll again with our judge Tami Butterwick. Another Q in the first Trial gave Garth his HT title and my first homebred dog to title, I love this boy to no end and he gives 310% for me. We did essentially run a started course and he is ready but his handler needed to work though some herding trial jitters J This trail again saw Finn and Chelsey take 1 st in class in Herding Intermediate with a beautiful run and a 90 score, this also gave them a well deserved High in Trial, go Aussies! The afternoon Arena trial was a highlight for me as Mini and Pirate got their second Q and their HT. They have been working very hard to come together as a team, I am so proud of her and look forward to great things ahead for them. A third Q for Finn and Chelsey on a tougher stock draw also saw them earn their Herding Intermediate title just a week after finishing their Herding Started, very proud of this team as well! The Stock dog trials at the end of the day saw some really nice runs in spite of everyone being tired and a huge amount of fan support which was awesome to see. CNASA MEMBER Kathy Chorney was 1st in Herding Started with her ACD Çhip, this team is always a crowd favourite with their positive attitude no matter the outcome of the run. The Stock Dog Advanced class was a great way to wrap things up with 3 really nice examples of great working dogs. Aussie, Dan and handler Billie Richardson put together a beautiful run for a score of 95 but the ol man Jed strolled in and made a really pretty run pulling out a 98.5 to again be our High in Trial dog. I know several titles were earned over the weekend and I have had several messages already wanting to know if we will do it again and how much fun everyone had in spite of Mother Nature. We enjoyed many laughs, lots of learning and helpful advice from our judges at the end of the day and a really nice group to spend the weekend with. On a positive note for CNASA, it looks like we should be able to add a good $600 to our bank account as profit from this event. We threw these trials together on very short notice so didn t get class sponsorships or anything but we did offer Stock Sticks and nice rosettes at the trails and people seemed plenty pleased.

Notes from the Zone Directors Zone 1 Jessie Dare Hello CNASA Members, Hope all are having a great summer, it's been beautiful here. Not much to report for zone 1 this time around. Some members are gearing up for the CKC Herding Championship Showcase. Which CNASA has graciously donated $300 to support. Another graciously donated prize from CNASA was donated to the AAC Canadian National Agility Championships that were held in Alberta this year. The $100 gift card to Clean Run was ip for grabs to the Aussie with the fastest YPS in Standard or Jumpers round. The prize was won by Sandra Bater and her lovely red tri Jade...who is also the face on many Petcurean products that you'll see around the pet stores. Sandra isn't a CNASA member, just yet, but we would like to congratulate her on her award! Way to go! Please remember if you have any brags or announcements we would love to have them published in the newsletter. All the best, Jessie Dare sendoaaussies@gmail.com CNASA Zone 1 Director - BC/Yukon

Notes from the Zone Directors Zone 2 Leah McBride Hello CNASA Members, Most of my news from the Zone is in the report on my first effort with Herding Trials held September 7 th and 8 th at No Chicken Ranch in Okotoks, Alberta - the home of members Jerry Kurbatoff and Billie Richardson.. I am hoping to have these trials become an annual event out here.see how the rest of my crew feels after the dust has settled, lol. In other news, there will be a Booster at the Red Deer and District Kennel Club Shows the first weekend of November under Herding Judge Judy Byrne. I have donated the prizes and will co-sponsor the event along with CNASA. My plan will also be to have another booster at their Spring Shows pending board approval. Hope you are all enjoying the beautiful Indian Summer we seem to be getting this week, get out there and have fun with those awesome Aussies! 17 Notes from the Zone Directors Zone 4 Leah Swatko Hello CNASA Members, Summer seems to have whizzed past in a blur of heat, humidity, too hot, too cold, and rain, plenty of rain. Everyone has been busy at shows, trials and family events. We might enjoy our winter sports but we sure do fit a lot of energy into our short summers. I will be traveling to Greeley CO for the 2013 ASCA National and Pre Shows. I hope to see some of our club members there, we need a secret handshake or some sort of identification. I know so many by name but not by sight. I will be staying on site and hope to meet with many long time friends and some new ones. The CNASA 2014 National Specialty is taking form, looking forward to seeing as many as can make it up in Thunderbay. Each National Specialty put on by CNASA is done by a group of volunteers. I would like to express my deepest appreciation to those members and non members who are working diligently to make 2014 a memorable experience. So folks mark your calendar for next July. The Specialty will be held in conjuncture with all breed shows so a great opportunity to showcase our wonderful breed in so many venues, Herding to Conformation, Agility to Rally something for everyone. It is a beautiful, if heart stopping, drive along the north shore of Lake Superior so bring your camera and plan to stop at some of the most beautiful scenery Northern Ontario has to offer. Just a reminder that our Ontario Regional Specialty will be held in conjunction with the Caledon KC All Breed Show - boosters on the Friday and Sunday (Nov. 29th & Dec. 1st 2013) The Specialty on Saturday Nov. 30th. is dedicated To The Memory of Nigel Stephens, who passed away last fall. Nigel was a long time Aussie Breeder and competitor in multiple venues, and husband of our very own CNASA Secretary Gail. We hope to see a good entry of wonderful adults and promising pups. Yours in Dogs Leah Swatko ministik@xplornet.ca CNASA Zone 4 Director Ontario/Nunavut

Australian Shepherd: Structure and Gait Second in a Series Reprinted with permission from author Shelley Hollen aussies.com Head Characteristics The head of the Australian Shepherd is designed to help the dog efficiently carry out the work he was bred to do. While there can be a variety of head styles, a clean cut, properly constructed head defines breed character and quality. The ideal head must be moderate and in proportion to the rest of the dog, yet strong enough to protect the dog from injury while working livestock. The skull is flat to slightly curved between the ears. The backskull transitions smoothly into the muzzle with a moderate, but defined stop. The top skull and muzzle form obliquely set planes that approach parallel. The cheeks are neither coarse nor prominent. The under jaw should be well developed and meet the upper jaw in a rounded tip. The foreface is well filled in under the eyes, tapering gradually to form a medium length muzzle shaped like an oblique wedge. The width and length of the skull should be approximately the same as the length of the muzzle. Masculine and feminine characteristics should be apparent in the construction of the head type. Overly coarse or very narrow refined heads deviate from breed type and fail to serve the dog in its tasks. The specifications for the head were selected for practical purpose and function. A dog with a narrow head and fragile bone structure is more likely to suffer a severe injury if kicked. A dog with a coarse head, excessive stop and overly defined planes will catch the brunt of a blow to the skull. A moderately wide backskull and stop combined with strong, well constructed features that blend seamlessly together is ideal. To evaluate the proportional balance of the head, measure horizontally across the top skull, from ear to ear. Measure a second time, from the occiput to the middle of the stop. The third measurement should be taken from the middle of the stop to the end of the nose. These three measurements should approximate one another.

Too Much (Cushing's) or Too Little (Addison's)... Cushing's disease (hyperadrenocorticism) is the overproduction of the hormone cortisol by the adrenal glands that are located in the belly near the kidneys. Cushing's disease occurs commonly in dogs, but is rare in cats. Most dogs with Cushing s disease are about 6 years old or older but sometimes Cushing's disease occurs in younger dogs. Cortisol affects the function of many organs in the body, so the signs of Cushing s disease may be varied. Some of the more common signs of Cushing s disease include hair loss, pot-bellied appearance, increased appetite, and increased drinking and urination called polydipsia and polyuria (PU/PD). Hair loss caused by Cushing s disease occurs primarily on the body, sparing the head and legs. The skin is not usually itchy as it is with other skin diseases. If you pick up a fold of skin on a dog with Cushing s disease, you may notice that the skin is thinner than normal. The pet may have fragile blood vessels and may bruise easily. Less common signs of Cushing s disease are weakness, panting, and an abnormal way of walking (stiff or standing or walking with the paws knuckled over). Some dogs with Cushing s disease develop a blood clot to the lungs and show a rapid onset of difficulty breathing. Dogs that are given prednisone or similar drugs can develop signs that look like Cushing s disease (called iatrogenic Cushing s). There are two types of Cushing s disease that are treated differently. The most common form of Cushing s disease is caused by the overproduction of a hormone by the pituitary gland in the brain that in turn controls the amount of cortisol produced by the adrenal glands. This is called pituitary-dependent Cushing s. A small percentage of dogs with Cushing s disease have a tumor of one of the adrenal glands which is called adrenal-dependent Cushing s. There is no single test to diagnose Cushing s disease. The history, physical exam, and results of initial blood and urine tests often provide a strong suspicion for the presence of Cushing s disease. Laboratory tests that are most commonly altered by Cushing s disease are an increase in white blood cell count, increase in the liver enzyme ALP (also called SAP or serum alkaline phosphatase), increased blood sugar (although not as high as the blood sugar levels of diabetic patients), increased cholesterol and dilute urine. See What Do Those Lab Tests Mean? for additional information about laboratory tests. The large amount of cortisol in the body suppresses the immune system and allows the pet with Cushing s disease to get bacterial infections. The most common location for infection is the bladder. Pets with Cushing s disease may have a silent bladder infection meaning they don t show signs of having the infection such as straining to urinate. A culture of the urine may be necessary to diagnose the infection. Continued

X-rays of the belly often show a large liver. Occasionally the x-ray will show calcium in the area of one of the adrenal glands that is suggestive of an adrenal tumor. Ultrasound of the belly may show enlargement of both adrenal glands in pets with pituitary-dependent Cushing s or enlargement of just one of the adrenal glands in pets with an adrenal tumor. The adrenal glands are NOT always seen during an ultrasound exam in pets with Cushing s. In some pets with an adrenal tumor, the tumor can be seen growing into large blood vessels close to the adrenal gland or spread from the tumor may be seen in the liver. Specific tests for Cushing s disease are performed to confirm the diagnosis and to determine the type of Cushing s disease that is present, pituitary-dependent, or adrenal-dependent. Specific tests for Cushing s disease have varied results. In some cases the results are clear cut and the diagnosis is made, but in other cases the test results are not clear cut and a series of tests must be performed. Some of the specific tests for Cushing s disease include urine cortisol/creatinine ratio, low dose dexamethasone suppression test, high dose dexamethasone suppression test, and an ACTH stimulation test. The treatment of the most common type of Cushing s disease (pituitary-dependent) is lifelong oral medication. The most common drugs used to treat Cushing s disease are o, p -DDD (also called Lysodren or mitotane) and Trilostane. Occasionally ketoconazole or L-Deprenyl are used to treat Cushing s disease but are less effective than Trilostane or Mitotane. o, p -DDD is initially given daily or twice daily for about a week (sometimes more, sometimes less). The initial treatment is called induction. o, p -DDD can have serious side effects, so pets being treated for Cushing s disease must be closely watched. After induction o, p -DDD is given less often, usually once or twice weekly for the life of the pet. Some pets will have a recurrence of signs of Cushing's disease later in life, even though they are receiving o, p -DDD. Trilostane tends to have fewer side effects than o, p -DDD but is more expensive. Discuss with your veterinarian which treatment is best for your pet. Treatment of adrenal dependent Cushing s disease is by surgical removal of the cancerous adrenal gland. Adrenal gland tumors can spread to other parts of the body in which case all the cancer cannot be removed by surgery. Medical treatment may be given before surgery to reduce hormone levels before surgery. o, p -DDD is not as effective in reducing signs in pets with adrenal-dependent Cushing s disease as it is in pets with pituitarydependent Cushing s disease. Trilostane may be effective in controlling the signs of Cushing's in some dogs with adrenal tumors. The prognosis for pituitary-dependent Cushing s disease with treatment is usually good. Some signs will disappear quickly and others gradually. Appetite and water consumption usually return to normal in a few weeks where as full return of the fur may take several months. Addison s disease (hypoadrenocorticism) is caused by a lower than normal production of hormones, such as cortisol, by the adrenal glands. The adrenals are small glands that are located near the kidneys. Adrenal hormones are necessary to control salt, sugar and water balance in the body. Continued

Addison s disease occurs less commonly than the opposite condition, Cushing s disease (overproduction of cortisol) in dogs, and is rare in cats. Addison s disease occurs most commonly in young to middle-aged female dogs. The average age is about 4 years old. The signs of Addison s disease may be severe and appear suddenly, or may occur intermittently and vary in severity. Signs may include weakness, depression, lack of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, and occasionally increased thirst (polydipsia) and increased urine production (polyuria). When a pet is stressed, their adrenal glands produce more cortisol, which helps them deal with the stress. Because dogs with Addison s disease cannot make enough cortisol, they cannot deal with stress, so the signs may occur or worsen when stressed. What a dog finds stressful depends upon his/her temperament. For many dogs, any change in their day-to-day routine, such as being boarded or having house guests, is stressful and may precipitate or worsen signs of Addison s disease. On examination of dogs with Addison s disease one may see depression, weakness, dehydration, weak pulses and sometimes a slow, irregular heart rate. Routine laboratory tests often show a low blood sodium and high blood potassium. Loss of water, in vomit and diarrhea, can lead to dehydration. Severe dehydration increases waste products in the blood (creatinine and blood urea nitrogen = BUN) that are normally eliminated by the kidneys. Addison s disease can be confused with primary kidney disease. Some dogs with Addison s disease have low blood sugar. Sick dogs often show a pattern of changes in their white blood cells (WBCs) called a stress leukogram. This pattern of changes in the WBCs is caused by cortisol. The absence of a stress leukogram in a sick dog may be a clue to consider Addison s disease. The urine is often dilute. Increased blood potassium can cause life-threatening abnormalities in the heart rhythm. These abnormalities can cause the heart rate to be slow and irregular and can be seen on an electrocardiogram (ECG). X-rays of dogs with Addison s disease do not show any specific abnormalities. The heart may appear smaller than normal and rarely the esophagus (tube from mouth to stomach) can be enlarged. The history, physical examination, and initial laboratory tests provide suspicion for Addison s disease, but a more specific test, an ACTH challenge, should be performed to confirm the disease. There are two stages of treatment for Addison s disease; in-hospital treatment and long term treatment. Very sick dogs with Addison s disease require intravenous fluids, cortisol-like drugs and drugs to neutralize the effects of potassium on the heart. Continued...

Long-term treatment involves the administration of hormones in one of two forms; either a daily pill or a shot that is given about every 25 days. Because dogs with Addison s disease cannot produce more cortisol in response to stress, stress should be minimized whenever possible. It may be necessary to increase the amount of hormones given during periods of stress (e.g. boarding, surgery, travel, etc.). With appropriate treatment for Addison s disease, dogs can live a long and happy life. These articles are reprinted courtesy of the Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine Pelger-Huet Anomaly (PHA) by C.A. Sharp. Pelger-Huet Anomaly is an incomplete dominant. Dogs with only one gene are almost always healthy, but if bred to another heterozygote, the pups that receive two PHA genes will be reabsorbed, stillborn or die shortly after birth. PHA isa breeder's problem, rather than an owner's, because it rarely affects the health of a dog but results in small litters or loss of neonates. There is a blood test to screen for it (make sure the lab does the canine test, not one for another species because they don't work for dogs). All Aussies used for breeding whose parents have not tested clear of PHA should be screened. If a dog carries PHA, don't ever breed it to another carrier. Be sure anyone buying puppies of a PHA carrier for breeding knows that they will need to be screened to determine their PHA status before being bred.
