Teacher: When was the Great Depression? Student: Last week, when I got my report card. We are only young once. That s all society can stand. It s not what s under the Christmas tree that matters, what matters is who is around it. *Coffee news FORGOTTEN DOG S CHRISTMAS 'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse The stockings were hung by the chimney with care In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there The children were nestled all snug in their beds With no thought of the dog filling their head And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap Knew he was cold, but didn't care about that When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter Away to the window I flew like a flash Figuring the dog was free of his chain and into the trash The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow Gave the luster of mid-day to objects below When, what to my wondering eyes should appear But Santa Claus - with eyes full of tears He un-chained the dog, once so lively and quick Last year's Christmas present, now painfully thin and sick More rapid than eagles he called the dog's name And the dog ran to him, despite all his pain "Now, DASHER! now, DANCER! now, PRANCER and VIXEN! On, COMET! on CUPID! on, DONNER and BLITZEN! To the top of the porch! To the top of the wall! Let's find this dog a home where he'll be loved by all." I knew in an instant there would be no gifts this year For Santa Claus had made one thing quite clear The gift of a dog is not just for the season We had gotten the pup for all the wrong reasons In our haste to think of the kids a gift ~ 2 ~

There was one important thing that we missed A dog should be family, and cared for the same You don't give a gift, then put it on a chain And I heard him exclaim as he rode out of sight "You weren't given a gift! You were given a LIFE!" - Author Unknown (From CFODC Newsletter) When you have an opportunity click on this website. Here are the misconceptions and the facts you need to know as temperatures drop. Myth 1: Salt doesn t hurt dog s paws Lots of fans say their dogs paws get burned by the salt used to melt snow on the ground. They suggest putting Vaseline on paws so the cushions don t get burned by the salt on the road, or the cold of the snow. What do you think? ~ 3 ~

Dr. Cerny: There are a variety of products used to melt snow and ice. Some compounds can damage the concrete and leave it pitted, so you can imagine what it may do to a dog s paws. Related: The dog walk in the cold and snow There are several products on the market that are labeled as pet safe. I have no recommendations of one over the other. Vaseline is generally safe but can stick to things like carpet. Rinsing your dog s paws after a walk where snow and ice melting products have been applied is a safe and effective means of protecting your dog s feet. You can also use baby wipes. Myth 2: Dog boots are just a fashion fad Why and when can dogs benefit from wearing boots? How can you tell if they fit properly? Dr. Cerny: There are quite a variety of styles and quality of boots designed for dogs. Boots can help protect a dog s feet from rough, chemically treated, cold and hot surfaces. The inside of the boots should be kept clean and dry, and they should not be left on for an extended period of time. Finding the right fit may require some trial and error. Some boots require frequent adjustment because they slip. Myth 3: If it s too cold outside for humans, it s too cold for dogs How cold is too cold to leave a dog outside? Is there any difference across various breeds? Dr. Cerny: Many dogs can handle much colder conditions than humans, but nothing beats common sense. A sled dog is used to extreme cold while a Chihuahua probably is not. Thick coated breeds can handle much colder weather than short haired breeds. If a dog lives outside it is important to provide shelter from the wind and snow. Myth 4: My dog has fur, she doesn t need to wear a coat What are the recommendations? What are things to look for in a dog coat? Are electrically heated pet beds or a dog house with a heated floor also recommended? Do dogs need blankets? Dr. Cerny: Some dogs, especially short haired breeds, can benefit from a coat during cold weather. Make sure the coat adequately covers the body and does not obstruct movement. Any electric heating bed or pad always carries the risk of burns, so follow the manufacturer s guidelines. Blankets can add another layer of insulation during the cold weather. Myth 5: Dog s watery eyes can t be dry What are some symptoms of dry eyes in dogs? What are some good eye care tips during winter? Do dogs need eye wash during harsh, cold weather? Dr. Cerny: Common signs of dry eye (keratoconjunctivitis sicca) in dogs include conjunctivitis, mucoid discharge, and irritated painful eyes. Without prompt treatment the surface of the eye (cornea) can become scarred and affect vision. During the colder months the air is much dryer and some breeds are predisposed to eye irritation. Products such as artificial tears can be used to help moisten the eyes. Some eye conditions can ~ 4 ~

become serious quickly, so consult your veterinarian to determine the cause and best treatment for eye problems. Myth 6: Some dog breeds are immune to the harsh effects of winter Do all Huskies, German shepherds, and St. Bernards want to be outside during winter? Are some dog breeds immune to the harsh effects of winter? Dr. Cerny: Some dog breeds (especially thick coated breeds) seem to enjoy the cold weather. It is important to observe how your dog acts when outside in the cold. Signs such as shivering and wanting to come back inside immediately indicate that your dog does not appreciate the cold outside. Myth 7: It s never too cold to exercise outdoors What do you recommend for exercising dogs when it is too cold for them to be outside? Dr. Cerny: Inside exercises range from supervised treadmill walks to walking or running up and down the stairs and creating mini obstacle courses with household objects, such as pillows. When it s cold outside, this provides a great opportunity to work on basic obedience in the comfort of your own home. Myth 8: Ear infection is a summer ill Low temperatures and higher moisture can increase the incidence of ear infection in dogs. How do you treat it? Answer: Ear infections can occur year-round and may be quite advanced before you notice. Routine use of an ear wash in most cases can be beneficial in the treatment and prevention of ear infections. Some ear infections require prescription strength medications, so if your dog has an ear problem have it checked out by your veterinarian. Dr. Cerny, DVM, MS, is a veterinarian at Yankee Hill Veterinary Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska. Is that a gray wolf or just man s best friend who s a little stressed out? Impulsivity, anxiety associated with early graying in dogs By Ted Gregory Chicago Tribune CHICAGO Few would dispute that the stress of 2016 likely led to premature gray hair in humans. Now comes research, conducted in part by Northern Illinois University, showing that stress in dogs can turn them prematurely gray, too. The research, published in the December issue of Applied Animal Behaviour Science, analyzed questionnaires of 400 dog owners at a variety of venues in the Denver area to determine if their pets exhibited stressful behavior. ~ 5 ~

Researchers then photographed the dogs and handed the photos to independent raters, who gauged the dogs amount of gray hair. Both anxiety and impulsivity were significantly associated with premature graying in dogs between 2 and 4 years of age, the report concluded. Specifically, dogs presenting a greater extent of anxiety and impulsivity were more likely to present premature muzzle grayness than dogs showing less anxiety and impulsivity. The report s authors, who included NIU professor Thomas Smith, NIU alumna Camille King and prominent animal researcher and author Temple Grandin, also found that dogs fear responses to loud noises, unfamiliar animals and new people were significantly associated with increased muzzle grayness. The research also showed that female dogs were significantly more likely than male dogs to show gray in their muzzles. The results follow a 2014 report by King, Smith and Grandin, whose research showed that pressure wraps markedly decreased heart rates in anxious dogs. Smith, a professor of education who helped with data analysis of the findings, said he was surprised. I had a certain amount of skepticism about the idea going into the study, Smith said last week. But when we analyzed the data, it jumped out at me right away. Grandin, an animal science professor at Colorado State University, said the original, unique study gives owners of prematurely gray dogs a chance to take a different approach in their animal s care. Maybe you let the next-door neighbor keep the dog while you re at work, Grandin said. King, the lead author who earned her doctorate at NIU and now runs an animal behavior practice near Denver, said the results confirmed her observations over almost two decades of working with dogs. Those exhibiting stress would present gray muzzles as early as 2 years old, she said. More study is needed, she and Grandin said, on whether anxiety at being left home alone or impulsivity are the more significant. King encouraged dog owners who notice their young pets turning prematurely gray to visit a veterinarian or animal behaviorist for advice on how to ease their animal s stress. Kentucky: Worst State for Animal Cruelty Laws (Michael Walsh yahoo news.) ~ 6 ~

Kentucky has the weakest protections in the country a dubious honor it s held for a decade. The Animal Legal Defense Fund released its 11th annual report on animal protection rankings on Tuesday. Illinois topped the list of best protections for the ninth consecutive year, followed by Oregon, Maine, California and Rhode Island. Kentucky came in dead last for the 10th straight year. Other states with weak animal protection laws include Iowa (49th), Wyoming (48th), Utah (47th) and North Dakota (46th). Lora Dunn, the senior staff attorney of the Animal Legal Defense Fund s Criminal Justice Program, said the organization looked at 15 distinct categories of animal protection laws in all 50 states, as well as the District of Columbia and U.S. territories. We would like to see Kentucky make some very important changes to make sure that animals are protected now and in the future from known offenders, Dunn said in an interview with Yahoo News. According to Dunn, Kentucky falls short in terms of its felony penalties for animal cruelty: There is no consequence for neglect, sexual assault or abandonment of an animal, for instance. We d really like to see the punishment fit the crime in those situations, she told Yahoo News. Kentucky is the only state in the country that specifically prohibits veterinarians from reporting animal cruelty. The majority of states either allow or require by law that veterinarians who suspect animal cruelty to report it to law enforcement. Additionally, she said, Kentucky is the only state that doesn t require that animals be forfeited from a convicted offender s custody after he or she has been convicted. She said statistics show that someone who has harmed animals is more likely to hurt animals again in the future and to hurt humans as well. On the other end of the spectrum, Dunn said, Illinois remains on top because there are felony penalties covering virtually every kind of mistreatment, including abuse, neglect, fighting, sexual assault and abandonment. Across the country, the Animal Legal Defense Fund has largely seen positive changes regarding animal safety. Wisconsin was the most-improved state of the year, jumping 14 places in rank, from the bottom tier to number 30 overall. This was partly thanks to a new cost-of-care law. We re seeing very encouraging trends regarding animal protection legislation. In particular, we re seeing a trend regarding cost-of-care laws, she said. These mandate that [when] caregiving agencies that come to the rescue to help animals in need that have been seized as part of a criminal investigation the cost and burden of caring for those animals lies with the offender. ~ 7 ~

In other words, comprehensive cost-of-care laws place the financial responsibility of caring for an animal squarely with the person who has harmed it. Dunn said there s also been a promising trend regarding dogs in hot cars laws, which criminalize leaving an animal in a hot car and affirms the right of other people to save these animals in certain circumstances. The rescue provisions kick in after calling 911, after having a good faith belief that these animals are in danger and after taking other steps to notify the owner, she said. More than 20 states have passed laws that allow citizens to come to the rescue of these animals in really dangerous situations. The Animal Legal Defense Fund s annual rankings are based on a review of each jurisdiction s animal protection laws, which include more than 4,000 pages of statutes. *Did you know? In cities, fire trucks answer calls to put out flames, and in bush land in various parts of the world, water-bombing aircraft are used to tame forest fires. In Indonesia, however, a completely unique mode of transportation is used to fight bush fires: elephants. During bad forest fires in Riau province in East Sumatra, trained elephants went into the bus with crews, water pumps, and horses. The purpose was to patrol smoldering area and put out any further eruptions of flame. The trained elephants have also been used to drive their wild counterparts from settled areas back into the bush. A woman from London, England, got the surprise of her life when she placed an ofer on ebay. Becky Smith was excited when her purchase an exquisite glass table arrived at the door. The packaging was marked Fragile, so of course she thought it was the correct order. Upon opening the box, however, it became immediately clear that a huge mix-up had occurred. Inside the box were numerous water-filled bags of tropical fish and all swimming around happily. Smith s neighbor Jacqueline Johnson filed the fiasco and the video went viral. Never get tired of doing little things for others. Sometimes it s those little things that occupy the biggest part of their hearts. What has three feet and can t walk? A yardstick. Don t put off anything by a lack of experience. Remember, th ark was built by anateurs; the Titanic, by professional. *Coffee News ~ 8 ~
