1 U.S. DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE FEDERAL BUREAU OF PRISONS MONDAY MORNING November 5, 2012 HIGHLIGHTS FCI Berlin Holds Staff Recognition Event INSIDE HIGHLIGHTS FCI Oxford Staff Member Receives Award 2 MCC Chicago Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month 2 Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2 L. to R.: Congressman Bass, Director Samuels, Senator Sheheen, Warden Schult, Mayor Grenier, Regional Director Norwood On October 19, FCI Berlin, New Hampshire, held its Staff Recognition Event marking the official opening of the Bureau s newest facility and bringing the total number of institutions to 118. Director Samuels, Northeast Regional Director Norwood, FCI Berlin Warden Schult and her Executive Staff were on hand to welcome members of the New Hampshire congressional delegation: The Honorable Jeanne Shaheen, United States Senator, The Honorable Charles F. Bass, United States Congressman, and other special guests. The program began with the FCI Berlin Honor Guard presenting the colors; Unit Manager Wanda Mullens sang the National Anthem, and Supervisory Chaplain William Cunnings offered the invocation. Warden Schult made introductory remarks, followed by comments from Senator Shaheen and Congressman Bass. Regional Director Norwood recognized the hard work of FCI Berlin s staff in preparing the institution for activation and thanked the local community for their warm welcome. Staff News 4 Mission of the Bureau of Prisons It is the mission of the Federal Bureau of Prisons to protect society by confining offenders in the controlled environments of prisons and community-based facilities that are safe, humane, cost-efficient, and appropriately secure, and that provide work and other self-improvement opportunities to assist offenders in becoming law-abiding citizens.

2 Monday Morning Highlights Page 2 Director Samuels thanked Senator Shaheen and Congressman Bass for their assistance and thanked the people of Coos County, Mayor Paul Grenier and local law enforcement for their support. He welcomed the newly hired staff to the greatest agency in government and thanked the well-seasoned staff for taking on the challenge of activation, reminding them that their efforts will help form the foundation that will continue to serve the institution and the community well into the future. FCI Oxford Staff Member Receives Award Familiarization Training. Her positive impact at FCI Oxford and in the community makes Mrs. Strutz an outstanding recipient of this award. MCC Chicago Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month On October 12, MCC Chicago s Affirmative Action Committee held a staff recall to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. This year s theme was, Diversity United, Building America s Future Today. The guest speaker was Dr. Isaias Mercado, Pastor of The Carpenter s House, who discussed diversity among the various Hispanic cultures and stressed the importance of appreciating diversity. The program concluded with a cultural food sampling. Amy Strutz and Warden Robert Werlinger FCI Oxford SIS Support Technician Amy Strutz recently received the prestigious Boyd Spikerman Memorial Award from the Wisconsin Correctional Association. The Award is named in honor of Boyd Spikerman, a FCI Oxford Correctional Officer killed in the line of duty in 1984, and recognizes a correctional officer for his/her dedication to the mission and goals of corrections and for performing an act which brings credit and honor to the profession of correctional officer. Mrs. Strutz was recognized for the outstanding manner in which she performs her duties. In her position as an SIS Support Technician, she diligently monitors inmates, telephone calls, written correspondence, e- mails, and camera surveillance. She assists with the process of identifying inmates as gang members and provides gang training to staff at FCI Oxford during Annual Refresher Training and Institutional L. to R.: Abigail Hoyos, Warden s Secretary; guest speaker Dr. Isaias Mercado; Warden Catherine L. Lineaweaver; and Betty Mesarina, SIS Support Technician. Breast Cancer Awareness Month Activities FCI La Tuna During October, FCI La Tuna s Affirmative Employment Program sponsored activities to commemorate National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Federal Women s Program distributed educational materials and pink lapel pins. With nearly every staff member being affected, in some way, by breast cancer, they actively show their support -- many

3 Monday Morning Highlights Page 3 by wearing a BOP Breast Cancer Awareness polo shirt once a week. Federal Occupational Health Employee Assistance Program (TTY) Call for information or confidential assistance. FCI La Tuna staff show their support for breast cancer awareness FCI Talladega On October 25, FCI Talladega s Federal Women s Program (FWP) sponsored a Breast Cancer Awareness program. A registered nurse practitioner from the University of Alabama-Birmingham s Women s Cancer Clinic was the guest speaker. She stressed the importance of mammograms, self-exams, and she introduced Breast Cancer Angels survivors who shared their personal story of fighting cancer. FWP Manager Wilhelmina Elston and Alternate FWP Manager Shamarold Nettles coordinated the program.
