We enjoyed record attendance this year (220+) and everyone had a great time. Live music was provided by A Different Breed, the food was delicious and abundant, and the beer was cold. Many went home with extra cash in their hands from winning at the money wheel. While others left with a beautiful flower arrangements and many more enjoyed the silent auction and giveaways. We are already making arrangements for next year s event to be held on Saturday, June 15, 2013, at the Heritage Parkville Gardens. So mark your calendars and stay tune for upcoming announcements. Tickets will be limited and will sell fast, so get yours as soon as they go on sale to guarantee a night of fun and excitement. Did we mention the winner of the 50/50 drawing took home $2200. 4 The Dog Eared Gazette Page 4 Maryland Search Teams Group 2012 Functional Exercise Chesapeake Search Dogs, a member of the Maryland Search Teams Group (MSTG), will participate in the 2012 Functional Exercise to be held at the Cedarville State Forest, Brandywine, MD on November 2 and 3, MSTG is a consortium of highly trained and professional volunteer search and rescue teams that serve Maryland and the surrounding area. The MSTG is comprised of canine resources, horseback mounted first responders, man-trackers, search managers, communications and aerial search resources. The Teams are recognized by the Maryland State Police and Natural Resources Police as meeting the strict standards and requirements set forth for non-government search and rescue teams. The exercise is scheduled to begin at approximately 6:00 p.m. on Friday and will conclude on Saturday at around 5:00 p.m. The functional exercise will test MSTG s ability to coordinate a large scale search and rescue mission. We expect 12 teams and over 80 search volunteers from around the State to participate in the exercise. In addition, members of the Maryland State Police and Natural Resources Police will be participating and observing the event. Volunteer search and rescue professionals will work hand-in-hand with law enforcement and emergency first responders when investigating and searching for a lost or missing person. MSTG will practice the principles of search management to include: Unified Command, Incident Action Plan, Requesting and Deployment of Resources, Debriefing Searchers, Logistics and Radio Communication. Cedarville State Forest The Piscataway Indian Tribe made this section of Southern Maryland its winter camping ground because of the mild climate and abundance of game. Legend says there is an Indian Burial ground in Cedarville State Forest, but to date it has not been found. The headwaters of the Zekiah Swamp are located in Cedarville. The swamp extends Southward through Charles County for 20 miles, emptying into the Wicomico River. The Swamp is one mile wide, and serves as a haven for wildlife. The surrounding land is mostly agricultural fields. In colonial times and there after efforts were made to drain the swamp for cultivation. Drainage ditches are still evident. To this day, the swamp remains wooded bottom land. In 1930, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Forest, Park and Wildlife Service purchased 2,631 acres of land for a forest demonstration area. Later 879 more acres were added to bring the total to 3,510 acres. Cedarville was the postal address for the area, hence the name given to the State Forest. In 1933, the Civilian Conservation Corps, under the direction of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, developed roads and trails for fire protection and future access for the development of the area.
