5 MORE THAN JUST A NUMBER America s homeless veterans have served in World War II, the Korean War, Cold War, Vietnam War, Grenada, Panama, Lebanon, Persian Gulf War, Afghanistan and Iraq (OEF/OIF), and the military s anti-drug cultivation efforts in South America. Nearly half of homeless veterans served during the Vietnam era. Two-thirds served our country for at least three years, and onethird were stationed in a war zone. About 1.4 million other veterans, meanwhile, are considered at risk of homelessness due to poverty, lack of support networks, and dismal living conditions in overcrowded or substandard housing. (National Coalition for Homeless Veterans) It is not hard to find statistics such as the above. So many numbers. Those numbers don t have a face or name to put with them, but when you DO have a face and name? Those statistics? They become much more than just a number. I d like to share a local statistic with you. Alan Keller is a local disabled veteran who has been struggling for years with service connected chronic pain. Along with the continuous pain; he deals with anxiety, depression and PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). To help deal with the pain and depression, Alan would self-medicate. Over many years, Alan has tried to receive benefits through the Veterans Administration (VA) and has been unsuccessful for various reasons. With each denial from the VA, his depression and anxiety would grow, which in turn required even more self-medication, until it reached a point where he found himself with a DUI and sitting in jail. At the present time, and after many years of not asking for or wanting any help, Alan is on the road to a positive life. In his words, I m surviving, one day at a time with the help of various local organizations all working together. There are many facets to Alan s story, but one stands out and that is what Alan would like to share. Not all of the negative that he has endured, but the positive that has come about from his struggle. 6 years ago, Alan became the owner of a Boxer puppy. He named her Dink. She was the runt of the litter and was told she would not survive unless she was fed with an eye dropper. Alan adopted her, fed her with an eye dropper and gradually was able to bottle feed her. Throughout this time, Alan put all of his energy and focus into keeping this small unwanted puppy alive, and in doing so, realized that she was in fact, saving him. Six years have went by and Alan and Dink are inseparable. The bond that has been formed is one that cannot be measured. I think all veterans should have an animal. I am off all of the psych medications that I previously took, and it s all because of her. She saved my life. I wondered how Dink, this sweet Boxer saved his life. Alan s answer was strong and heartfelt I didn t care about my life. When I found her, she became my focus, my world. She is the reason I quit doing foolish things. She is the one who is with me and lets me know she is there when my anxiety comes on me. She is the reason I keep going each day. We have a very strong bond. She saved my life and I would lay down my own for her. Are there still struggles for Alan? Yes, there are. But he has learned to reach out and ask for help. In doing so, he has met some wonderful people from many local organizations that are helping him. He still has a hard time believing that people want to help. He always felt as if he was just a number to everyone. Alan has a business card from one of the organizations that have helped him, it states Providing outreach, resources and honor to those who have given so much for our country. He shared that he keeps this card near him all the time. When asked why, he simply said because sometimes you just need an encouraging word to get through the day, it can mean the world, and this card does that for me. (Continued on page 6)
6 (Continued from page 5) As the writer of this article I was touched by that, as a co-founder of the organization that card belongs to, Embracing Our Veterans, I was truly humbled. I was not expecting to hear that. As our conversation was coming to a close, Alan shared one last thing and said it with conviction. I will not fall again. I have my focus and my dog. One day at a time. I gave up for a while there, didn t care whether I lived or died. Now, little by little, things are coming together. Thank you Mr. Keller, for your service, sacrifice and willingness to share your story. I pray the rest of your journey is a peaceful one. May God Bless America and all those who have given so much for her. Kim Lengling is a local author, Co-Chair of Project Support Our Troops and Co-Founder of Embracing Our Veterans. She can be reached at embracingourveterans@gmail.com or Embracing Our Veterans regularly help homeless or formerly homeless veterans with pets. If you are able to help when we have a need, it would be greatly appreciated and a huge blessing to the veteran and their dogs. A Bark Park Community Vision If you are interested in working with the Bark Park to develop a program to help place shelter dogs with veterans, let Sue know. This committee will examine any existing programs, decide how the Bark Park can possibly help, contact support organizations, develop guidelines, etc.
7 Digger s words of wisdom Hello Humans! Digger here... Well, Mum says it is time to share my wisdom again with you humans. I just looked at her and said really Mum? Again? She gave me the look, so I guess I need to take care of this so that I can go lay outside on the deck and take a nap. I tell ya, a dog s life is tough at times. So here we are, Mum and I discussing different topics of what to share. I wanted to talk about walking in the woods and sniffing stuff, but Mum said maybe we need to talk about potential dangers to pets when walking in the woods, such as ticks. Now, I can honestly tell ya, I don t like ticks. Do you want to know why? Because they bite you and you never feel it! They have some sort of built in anesthesia, they secrete novel pain killers, called kininases, in their saliva which help them go unnoticed. (yea, I know those words, kinda ) so when they bite, so you don t feel it! Isn t that weird? Anyway, I don t like them because when I DO have one on me, Mum gets out the Tick Twister and wait, Mum says I need to tell you that you can get Tick Twisters at PetSmart or online and that they are quite a brilliant little tool. Ok, back to MY thoughts on this whole tick thing. First though, Mum said I need to emphasize, I am not a veterinarian, so this is just my experience. So.those ticks, they bite you and if your Mum or Dad don t see them right away, they apparently suck on your blood and grow! Really? I want to know why they pick dogs to do that? In particular me! I have had quite a few ticks get on me because my Mum and I walk twice a day, every day; in the fields, woods, and all over. So we are out there where the ticks live. Apparently, when I was younger, Mum tried some stuff the vet gave her to help keep ticks off of me, but I got REALLY sick. Mum said my eyes rolled back and I fell over! I don t remember that, but Mum sure does. I am apparently very sensitive to things like that, so Mum only gives me all natural stuff. You may want to watch how your dog reacts to things like preventative medicines, there may be more sensitive dogs out there besides just me. Mum says it is important for all Mums and Dads to do their research. And my Mum does her research boy oh boy does she! I tease her, but I know she does it because she loves me. So, if you DO get a tick, here is what PetMD has to say (Mum told me to say that part): Removal of any embedded ticks should be done carefully to be sure you get the entire tick out. You may want to wear a pair of disposable gloves or use a paper towel when handling ticks. Using tweezers or a special tick removal tool, you want to grip the tick by the head, as close to the skin as possible. Pull the tick straight out slowly and firmly without squeezing the body. Do not twist the tweezers when pulling out the tick, do not try to burn the tick with matches, and do not apply anything to the animal s skin to try to get the tick to back out, as these methods do not work. After removing the tick, place the entire tick in a small amount of rubbing alcohol to kill it. Do not squash the tick with your fingers. The site where the tick was attached will leave a small wound. You may clean your dog s skin with a disinfectant or apply a dab of triple antibiotic ointment once the tick has been removed, if you wish. Now, what I have to say is, just sit still while your Mum or Dad gets that little bugger off of you, because then you are usually told what a good boy you are and you get a treat! And I am all about getting treats! Don t tell Mum I said that though. I want her to keep thinking I am just incredibly smart, patient and good J Until next time humans! Be watchful of ticks, because they are still out there! DIGGER
8 AND SO... We come to a close of our 4th Season at the RED BARN STUDIO. It's been an "interesting" season...bus Tours, repeat Visitors, incredible demonstrations by the A4E Artists, lots & lots of dialogue and shared dreams for the Future. A4E has REALLY expanded its commitment and involvement with the Regional Community: The CREATIVE EXPERIENCE CLASS for the CC READ Program! The Artist Demonstrations at the CLAHS MUSEUM...and PADDLEFEST! AND (most recently) involvement with the MARK TWAIN MANOR in Jamestown, PA! Public demonstrations at 3 area Active Aging Centers, St. Paul's Home, Cambridge Springs, and much, much MORE! Can't forget our involvement with OPERATION WOUNDED VETZ, the VISION OF HOPE, and the UNITED WAY events. We have proven that ARTS FOR EVERYONE is truly living up to its philosophy, and is MUCH MORE than a simple "marketing agency." Watch for A4E Artists next appearance at the CLP Fall PUMPKINFEST, where we will be demonstrating all 3 days and, we will be joined by some of the therapy dogs from PAWS HAND-DELIVERED! THEN on 10/29, join the Artists at the Gibson House/Mark Twain Manor for some incredible demonstrations. We will be joined that day by members of the Mercer County Spinners & Weavers Guild. NEXT on Tuesday, 11/1, I (George) will be speaking and demonstrating at the Active Aging site in Cambridge Springs, PA. Can't even BEGIN to thank our involved and committed Artists! AND...even though the RED BARN will be closed, A4E goes on and on and on...serving our Community.
