She grew up with an assortment of dogs and ponies, often accompanied her beloved father on hunting and fishing trips (she was known to be a pretty good shot). Carolyn possessed a beautiful singing voice and loved to sing and was a member of an amateur Gilbert & Sullivan troupe in Fairfield County, Connecticut for several years. Carolyn studied at the Cincinnati Conservatory and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Carolyn worked as a personal secretary to various people in the arts and publishing fields, including the actress Bette Davis. She married and lived in Westport, Connecticut where she raised her children, Julie and William and continued to be surrounded by dogs, cats and horses. She bred Siamese cats and always had a pet dog in the house most often adopting a rescue. She developed a special attachment to the Shetland Sheepdog breed which would have a large impact on her life in later years. For several years Carolyn was active in real estate in Connecticut and then accepted a post as secretary in the Language and Arts department at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, Page 3 CT, where she remained until her retirement. In 2005 Carolyn fulfilled a lifelong dream by moving to Chandler, AZ. In Arizona, she became a member of the Mid-Arizona Shetland Sheepdog Club and Rescue Organization. Her dedication and love of the breed, exhibited in her commitment to rescuing and relocating shelties across the state. She pursued this activity with such passion and dedication, enjoying not only the satisfaction of helping shelties in distress, but also the warm friendships she made with people she came in contact with. Carolyn was an instrumental part of the success of MASSC Rescue and is truly missed. Carolyn passed away on May 6, 2010 with her children by her side. Joyce Gunsalus, 80, was born Dec.11, 1929, and left us Aug. 23, Joyce lived in Phoenix, AZ and was a breeder of shelties for several years. All her dogs live indoors with her and had access to a large back yard. She loved all her shelties with her heart and soul, and they surrounded her even through her last days. Joyce chose the kennel name "Christmas Shelties' since her first sheltie was born on Christmas day. She was a member of MASSC and

4 In Loving Memory (cont.) Page 4 we appreciated her willingness help at our shows and events. Joyce participated in obedience and confirmation, but found her spot in training and competing in AKC Agility. She was a real inspiration to all who watched her successfully run and title her dogs. We believe she was the oldest sheltie agility competitor in Arizona. Three of her dogs were titled in agility; one of which had her excellent titles. Joyce was thrilled to get to attend her first National Show this year March 2010 in Tucson. We will miss this Sheltie Friend, who had a life long love of shelties, and who reached out and graciously touched so many of us. John Kavanaugh March 3, 1948 to August 5, 2010 John was born in Canada and held dual citizenship (US). His family moved to Arizona when he was a child. He began his career in Collies as a teen in John s early mentors were The Glicks, Hillmans, Alice Wharton and Betty Crawford. He ap- prenticed with handler George Schlinker and received his AKC handlers license in By the time handler licensing was discontinued, John was approved for 27 breeds, including Shelties. Well respected in his breed, John developed a successful line of Collies under the Kingsmark prefix. Kingsmark is noted for producing a very definite family look which has produced over 50 champions to date. These dogs represent 30 consecutive generations of John s breeding. John was a member of Arizona Collie Clan, Flagstaff KC, Northern Arizona Collie Fanciers and Collie Club of America. He was a member of the CCA Quarter Century Club and served as CCA District Director for Arizona. In recent years, John and his colleague, Karen Thomas, developed a line of grooming and conditioning products known as The Right Stuff, which was used by a number of Sheltie people as well as collie people. Over time John has judged several Sheltie matches and specialty sweepstakes. He was fondly interested in the Shetland Sheepdog and friendly with many Sheltie breeders and exhibitors. He was always willing to help out with tips or advice for grooming and handling and to offer encouragement. Most importantly, John was a warm and true friend to many dog people. John s presence will be missed by many at the upcoming shows. Remarks and memory s of these three wonderful friends. Rest in peace and will met you at the Rainbow Bridge one day soon. Our prayers remain with the families and they remain in our thoughts each and every day. Jo Virden would like to share these thoughts of each of our friends: I first met Carolyn shortly after she moved to Arizona (Dec 2005). I was referred to her from a well known breeder in CT.I will never forget the first time I met her. She came with her son to look at some Sheltie puppies I had for sale. She took a little bitch home with her that day. She called me shortly after that inquiring if there was a Sheltie rescue locally as she would love to work with rescues as she had done in Conneticut. I gave her Bill's phone number and the rest is history. She was so passionate about those rescue Shelties. I miss her jokes. She made me laugh. John was always visible at the shows. You just had to look for that hat. He was a gentleman and always had a kind word. I will miss his hugs!!! Joyce loved her dogs and always wanted a plain faced sable male. I don't know if she ever got one or not? She always had a smile on her face and willing to help the club anyway she could. She will be missed. Joyce was one of the people who spoke on our behalf when Danny and I became members of MASSC. She was such a nice person, and was always

She loved her shelties, and was crazy about one of mine, too, Scotch (Sunburst Scotch n Soda). I remember one time when Joyce came over to pick up Scotch to breed to one of her girls, she kept asking me if I was sure I wanted him back, because she loved his sweet temperament. I told her I knew where she lived, and would haunt her if he didn t come home! Carroll & Danny Carolyn worked with rescue for many years, she started with Bill and continued with MASSC rescue when he split off. She was a member of the club and loved the shelties. Carolyn took in many shelties during her years with rescue, and helped to facilitate many adoptions. She worked hard and was dedicated, sacrificing her own health at times to help rescue. Carolyn was our organizer and organized the holiday gift wrapping events each year. She had store managers calling her in August to make sure we had good time slots for sheltie rescue. She is missed, Phyllis Watson MASSC Rescue. One of my fondest memories of Carolyn is when we were at Borders doing the Christmas gift wrapping...she took it upon herself to take my Cassie outside with her and stop every person who was smoking and lecture them about what it does to you. There were many different reactions, to say the least. Linda John was always around with a smile on his face and his hat on his head. He was one of those who reached out and extended his hand around the show ring. Offering suggestions, advice, and knowledge. In Flagstaff, this past June we spent about an hour together and chatted about several different things. He was a very interesting person not just in the dog world but in other topics as well. I am glad to have known him and will truly miss his presentence at the shows. Joyce was a wonderful person and like everyone else has mentioned loved her dogs. Although I was not as close to her as some, she still had an impact on our life. I can remember her getting upset about the fact the club is geared more for conformation than obedience or agility. Boy would she let you know her thoughts, however she still loved coming out to the shows and worked right beside the rest of us. In the end it didn t matter since it was all about the dogs. She will truly be missed and her loving smile she had for all. Carolyn was a force to be reckoned with especially when it came to rescue. You knew her heart was always in the right place. She too loved the dogs and would do EVE- RYTHING she could to provide the care and love any one of them deserved. She reached out her hand, heart and soul for all the dogs. Part of her would even go beyond the need as long as she thought there was a possibility for them. More than once, she took in and cared for those rescues that were in need giving up her own health in order to save a rescue. She was extremely instrumental, in doing not just her part, but also watching our account, following up on applications and adoptions. Watching several different things to see if there was a sheltie out their requiring our assistance. Her loss is felt in our rescue group and we all truly miss her. Rest in Peace our dear friends and one day we will met you over that Rainbow Bridge in the sky.

6 Learning Something New Page 6 Dog Heatstroke Prevention and Treatment by Daphne Sashin Jul 9th 11:00AM Filed Under: Dogs, Pet Health With temperatures in the triple digits in many parts of the country, pet owners need to be extra vigilant about keeping their animals cool. Dogs are much more prone than people to develop heatstroke, because they are only able to sweat through their foot pads and can cool off only by panting. Even the healthiest of dogs can succumb to heat-related illnesses if pushed too hard or left in a confined space. Dogs with medical problems are even more vulnerable. Help keep your pooch safe with these tips from the Humane Society of the United States, and veterinarian Ira Roth, director of the Community Practice Clinic at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. Protecting Your Dog From the Heat Here are three things to keep in mind during these intense summer days: Limit time outside. During extreme temperatures, it's a good idea for everyone -- man and beast -- to be inside if they can. But shortnosed dog breeds who naturally have more trouble breathing -- such as Boston terriers, pugs, English bulldogs, or boxers -- should be kept in air-conditioned rooms as much as possible. The same goes for dogs with renal or cardiac failure, or other health disorders, says Roth. If you can't keep your dog inside, make sure it has ready access to fresh water and shade, like in a dog house. Reduce physical activity. Keep exercise short with just a walk in the early morning or evening hours. Taking your dog out to "do his business," or letting him walk with you to the mailbox in the middle of the day is probably fine. But it's easy to overexert a dog without realizing it, Roth says. "If your daily routine is to come home and throw the ball and play catch for a while, you want to eliminate that or drastically reduce it," Roth tells Paw Nation. "Dogs will push themselves to exhaustion." It's up to you to recognize when your pet has had enough activity. Never leave a dog in car: We know you've heard this before but we will say it again and again because even if you're parked in the shade, the inside of your car can quickly reach 120 degrees. "Pets who are left in hot cars even briefly can suffer from heat exhaustion, heat stroke, brain damage, and can even die. Don't think that just because you'll be gone 'just a minute' that your pet will be safe while you're gone," the Humane Society of the United States says in its Summer Care Tips guide. Also, don't leave your dog in the back of a pickup truck. The bed can get hot enough to scorch a dog's feet or belly. What to Do if Your Dog Becomes Overheated Quick action is the key to treating your pet. If you suspect heatstroke, call your vet immediately. If your dog is panting excessively, staggering, seems disoriented or has reddish-purple gums your pet is in serious trouble. Fast treatment is critical to avoid life-threatening complications like blood-clotting abnormalities or multiorgan failure, Roth says. "Time will be an important factor," Roth says. "Many [overheated dogs] will die even with very, very aggressive treatment." Cool your dog down. After contacting your vet, the Humane Society recommends that you move your pet to the shade or an air-conditioned area. Apply cool (not cold) water over his body to gradually lower his core body temperature. Apply cold towels or ice packs to your pet's head, neck, and chest only. Let your pet drink small amounts of water or lick ice cubes. By staying alert and taking action quickly, you can keep your dog safe. Of course not all pet owners will be as vigilant as you so if you see a pet in a car alone during the hot summer months, alert the management of the store where the car is parked, and if the owner doesn't return, call local animal control or the police department. Subject: [americanssa] helping breeders I think this discussion is a very good one. Over time, we have had a couple of horrific cases involving breeders getting older, getting way over their heads, and declining cognitively to the point where they made the news. I think all of us, individually and as local and parent club members should be concerned with the health and welfare of our fellow members as well as their dogs. Here are some suggestions: 1. Local clubs should make a point to contact long time members they have not seen in a while. When people stop coming to club meetings or shows, why is that? Check it out. That person may be fine or they may need some help. Start with a phone call. Ask them to come to a meeting. Go visit. 2. Local clubs should consider giving a program on basic care of dogs with discussion time so people are reminded about best practices for caring for their dogs. 3. Think about kennel visits. When I was young, I trailed around with Mary Van Wagenen of Sea Isle and we went to shows and inevitably Mary would want to stop and visit a kennel or two along the way. These visits were super. First, we got to see all the dogs people had. Mary of course photographed all of them and often presented programs to Colonial

7 Learning Something New (cont) Page 7 showing all the dogs she had seen in her travels. It helped us learn the bloodlines. I think when there is a lot of kennel visiting, people become aware that they need to look good for visitors. 4. If you find anyone who is "over their head," offer help getting some dogs placed and offer help getting things in order. We need to be a concerned and caring community of dog lovers. Charlotte McGowan Dog HeartWorm Guide Dog Heartworm Disease: What is it? Heartworm is a condition in dogs caused by a certain type of para- site. These parasites are transmit- ted to your pet through mosquitoes. If you are living in an area where there are lots of mosquitoes during the night, it is very important that you seriously consider heartworm prevention measures for your dog. Heartworm is a very dangerous disease. It can kill your dog if you don t do something about it. Even more disturbing is the fact that this disease is very prevalent in the US, more particularly in the West where there are large open fields. As everybody knows, mosquitoes are common in rural areas and in the countryside. The moment heartworm-transmitting mosquitoes bite your dog, the larvae will be transferred into its bloodstream. It will incubate there for several days. That s the on-start of the disease. If left ignored, the parasites will eventually cause your pet a lot of harm. As such, it has to be treaded right away. On the other hand, heartworm in dogs is a type of disease that can easily be prevented. However, it can be very challenging to treat. The only good news is that this disease is rather seasonal so it is much easier for pet owners to protect their dogs from it. Heartworm in dogs can be prevented in many ways. There are preventives in the form of injections and oral medicines. The injection is usually given to the dog on a monthly basis, quite diligently during the heartworm peak season. Examples of such vaccines are Ivermectin, Milbemycin, Lufenuron, and Selamectin. Talk to your vet as to how your dog can use these medicines to keep heartworm away from their system. This disease is called Heartworm because the parasites tend to invade the heart of dogs. The eggs are deposited into the bloodstream and are transported into the rest of the body until they reach the heart. Once the parasites find their way in the right ventricle, they will duplicate in number. Too many of them can cause an extreme hazard to the dog s vital organs. As you very well know, failure of the heart may mean failure of the whole system. The initial symptom of heartworm is coughing. As the parasites find their way from the heart and into the lungs, it will cause a group of symptoms similar to a pulmonary disease like lung cancer. Hemoptysis and chest pain come along with it. This makes heartworm in dogs a very difficult disease to detect. Even a veterinarian may find it hard to diagnose your dog s disease, and to provide the necessary cure for it. Unlike most parasites, these ones don t affect the coat or the fur of your dog. They affect your dog s internal organs instead, which compounds the problem. Heartworm can infect the rest of your dog s vital organs, not just the heart and lungs. It can cause the veins to work abnormally and the liver to shut down its normal operation. There are many dogs that have died from heartworm. Don t let your dog be the next victim. Provide your dog with the necessary care it needs. If you live in a place where mosquitoes grow in number during the summer or a particular time of the year, be sure to consult your vet for the best preventive measure against this disease.

9 Page 9 R e s c u e Updates These past couple months have been very busy for our rescue team. Here is a brief summary of our happenings and future going on till the next edition of the newsletter: As you know Rescue took in Joyce G. dog s upon her passing. We know Joyce was watching over her kids and helping rescue place her dogs in loving, caring, wonderful forever homes. We had the pleasure of placing eight of her dogs. Six of the eight went in homes two together and the other two older girls placed in wonderful homes where they can receive the love, care, and individual attention they deserve. We all know how much Joyce dog s meant to here and in turn each of the dogs means so much to the new owners. (An individual update on all of Joyce s dogs is available is you would like to read it). We received six shelties from Kansas, originally we were to get three but at the last minute, they received a phone call from another puppy mill that turned in another three. It seems all of these come from two different backyard breeder/puppy mill's. Kansas now has a restriction on the number of dogs they can now have, instead of hundred s it is only 80, I m sure Kansas rescue is going to continue to be over whelmed until these places are down to the allowed number. Mike Sheldon and a friend of his drove half way to Kansas, and his mom drove the other half and met him with these rescues. Special thank you goes out to Mike and Twyla. The original three were all vet cared for prior to our receiving them. There are two girls and one boy, all on the bigger side. The girls are tri factor sables, and the boy is a blue merle. All were shaved when groomed and very scared. They will take some time to adjust and get socialized in order to get adopted, but our wonderful foster homes are doing a great job with them. The other three (two female and one male) needed vet checked, utd on shots and dentals completed. When tested the two girls both tested Heartworm positive, which meant a good long month/life of care. Unfortunately one of the girls had several other issues going on with her (sheltie skin syndrome, allergies, an already week heart, then had a extreme Pyometra and had to be put to rest). The other girl started her treatment and we are hoping/praying for the best. The boy (tri) and girl (trifactor sable) are coming around quite well, once they are completely healthy shouldn t take long to be adopted. Both are on the small size and just looking for love. Everyone is scared and in need of good food, good grooming and lots of love. Thank you Bil- Jack for supplying food for our rescues, and foster homes for supplying the love, care, patience and grooming. We will update you on these guys soon. We continue to receive owner turned in dogs. A new sable girl named Snickers; she was a very sick little girl and needed medical attention. She was on pain meds and antibiotics as soon as we received her and able to get her into the Vet. Her infection in her mouth caused server swelling and she wouldn t let anyone near her mouth. Poor thing was so miserable all she wanted to do is lie around and sleep. Once her infection was cleared up we were able to get her dental done. She had 5 teeth pulled, but now is on the road to recovery and coming out of her shell. She wags her tail and loves her foster mom. She will be out at our next adoption event and will be up on the website soon. Hannah finally got her ears all better and has done quite well, although this condition will be a permanent one, her ear is opened and no longer red. She will require ear meds and possibly some surgery later if her new mom decides to get it done. She was adopted out at our Oct adoption event and went to a wonderful home in Tucson. Her new mom has been inquiring and keeping up with her condition for several weeks and was just waiting for the time to be right for the adoption. Seems like she will be going golfing everyday (ok maybe just a ride in the golf cart), but looks like they are both very happy. Little Teddy Bear was also adopted. He was another owner turned in at our Aug adoption event. He was and is a little pistol and needed someone that would provide the time and training to make sure he understood someone else was the alpha. His new mom has been involved with dog training and showing Belgian Malinois for years and was looking to downsize while going through changes in her life. She has renamed him; he is no longer Teddy Bear but TD (for TOTALLY DYNAMITE) and is taking him though obedience and working agility with him. They are quite a pair and a great advertisement for our rescue. Duke was our first dog Mike brought back from his summer vacation in Kansas. Duke was in the Kansas rescue and had a really hard time finding an adoption home. Within the first 10 mins of our Sept event, Duke was spoken for. A couple saw him on our website and was at Petsmart waiting for Mike to show up first thing that morning. NO QUESTIONS asked, they were excited to get him. Mike had just got home with him so he still required vet care and needed to get neutered, but they didn t care. They just loved the little guy and he is working out wonderful. That brings us up to date on all our adoptions and current dogs. Look at our list of upcoming events taking place. Please come join us, we can ALWAYS use extra hands, experience and friendship. It is wonderful to see all of our adopted dogs come back and visit along with their new families and we always welcome the visits and stories they have to share. This is part of what helps makes rescue so enjoyable and successful. Thank you everyone for making us all successful in finding forever homes for our shelties. Hope to see everyone soon, if not stay tune for our next updates. MASSC Rescue
