Thunderbird Road Glendale, AZ Southwest corner Thunderbird & 51st Avenue Board meeting to follow, members are always welcome to stay Next Field Trial August 13th & 14th Pine Hill Intersection of Forest Rd. 82 And Forest Rd. 125 INSIDE THIS ISSUE: For those of you who do not know me, my name is Wendy McNabb. I have volunteered to take over the newsletter in hopes of taking some load off Gina. I will do my best to provide the quality of product you are used to. Just gathering the information has proven to be a job in itself. I would ask that if you have anything you want to share with the club please provide it directly to me. Items received by the 15th will make the next month s issue. Much like the trials this will be what YOU make of it and any submissions or pictures are greatly appreciated. I know that this newsletter is on the light side with photos and information other than the trial updates, but I assure you that as I get the hang of this it will be more informative. I really just wanted to get the last few months of updates our to you as soon as possible. I am looking forward to making each newsletter better than the last! 2 Letter from the President AZPDC President Tom Wheeling A newsletter!! Woohooo!!! It is with great pleasure that I m able to welcome the Unsinkable Wendy McNabb as the new editor-in-chief of the AZPDC newsletter. Filling the oh-socapable shoes of Gina Gerdes is no small feat (ahem), but Wendy has my full and utter confidence. I ve found her to be quite the force majeure! And Gina, on behalf of the entire club... thank you so very, very much. Your work is superb. Even I did not really appreciate how much the newsletter adds to the club, and how much our members appreciate it, until we missed a couple months. I think a wise man once said that a person who doesn t read good newsletters holds no advantage over the person who can t read them. Or something like that. So the trial season has been humming right along and, as usual, we are seeing the development of some truly outstanding animals! The overall quality of our dogs never ceases to amaze me. I frankly didn t care much about the NFL players strike because I knew that the T.O.C. is just around the corner! We have one more trial weekend before our championships, and there are some really hotly contested titles on the line. The Board has been diligently working to form a more perfect dog club. Jack Mitchell put a lot of work into a new member packet that will help the neophites hit the ground running, and he found us the Denny s that is now and for the near future our monthly meeting venue. Brent Jacobs has designed a very nifty trial entry form that can be filled out and then submitted entirely online. We re still working out a couple bugs on that one. Karl Von Wolff found us a new gas grill that works like a champ, and we ve even decided to look into the purchase of a satellite phone as an emergency link to civilization. We ve also petitioned the federal administration for a new Obamacare lifeflight helicopter on permanent standby, so keep you fingers crossed. And again, it s an honor to be the president of the best damn club west of West Quoddy Head, Maine (thank you Google Maps). See you next Tuesday! Tom Wheeling President AZPDC
3 Field Trial news written by: Brian Smith How do I start this one? How about Help I ve fallen and I can t get up. Someone catch my dog and can we start over? Anyone who was there saw me stick my foot in the only tree branch around and go down. So for the record my fibula (calf, ankle bone) is cracked and I am on crutches for 4 more weeks. My dogs are not happy about it at all either. On to the trial news. Saturday s Race results Jr. Hunter 1 st -Ge/ Pointer, Ki Porter, 2 nd Reba/G.S.P.,Ted Bounds (New Member), 3rd/Fancy/Pointer, C.J. Hamilton, 4 th /Gus, Pointer, Karl Vom- Wolf Sr. Hunter 1 st Sugar/Pointer, C.J. Hamilton, 2 nd Katie/G.S.P., Page dog, 3 rd Gretchen/Drahthaar, Brian Smith, 4 th Gee Gee/G.S.P., Karl Vom Wolf Gun Dog 1 st Wyatt/G.S.P.-Todd Felitz, 2 nd Sage/G.S.P.-Todd Felitz, 3 rd Deuce/Pointer-Dave Auten, 4 th Jake/Pointer-C.J. Hamilton Saturday story- We all like to see Ki and his dogs, and Saturday he had a really nice run with 17pts in Jr. I met Ted Bounds Friday and enjoyed his company, he went out and won 2 nd first time out on Saturday, hope your hooked Ted. CJ and Karl come out and show off consistent training with placements across the board. Speaking of C.J. Saturday 21 points for Sugar and placements in Jr., Sr., and Gundog. Guess most improved handler award was well deserved. Katie and the Pages are in the hunt now. I happened to manage Gretchen to 3 rd with some help from Alan Churchwell in a run off. Then we have Todd Felitz bring the crew and knock the Gundog House down with 52 points on Wyatt in one run, plus a second on Sage. Dave Auten can quite complaining about not winning with Deuce he gets a yellow for Sat and is Qualified for T.O.C. We really need to thank Bill Summers and his daughter for handling bird planting with their horse; we would have been in sore shape without them. Sundays Results Jr. Hunter 1st Fancy-C.J., 2 nd Gus-Karl, 3 rd Mick-Erik Earsland, 4 th Reba-Ted - Sr. Hunter 1stGee-Gee-Karl 24pts, 2 nd Crown -Jim21pts, 3 rd Slick-C.J.20pts, 4 th Piper-Page 19pts Gundog 1 st Tori-Brent Jacobs, 2 nd Duke-Bobby Moore, 3 rd Sage-Todd Felitz, 4 th Leo-Ron Horn/C.J. Sunday story- C.J. Hamilton is unstoppable folks. He ran dogs all weekend and also agreed to run Slick for me Sunday. He placed Dogs in all classes both days which I think may be something I have not seen. We may have to put out a marathon man award for this guy; he also hauls the trailer and birds everywhere, so when you see him pat him on the back. Ted Bounds got placements both days, great deal for a new guy. Jim Shroeder and Crown get 2 nd on Sunday and this puts Jim back in the lead in Sr. for all of us to chase.. Again.. Piper has a TOC qualification. Bobby brought Duke out and gets a ribbon, and seasoned vet. Ron Horn has Leo qualified for T.O.C. Finally Eric Earslend Continued.
4 I think I ll call this the Race for the Point instead of the race for the chase High Point Race- Gun Dog- Tori and Brent still have a lead but Wyatt closed the gap and this was in one weekend so look out. Gunner and Don Mcnabb trail by just a few and marathon man CJ with last years Sr. High point Dog Jake is in 4 th. The field behind that is pretty wide Sr-Hunter- Crown and Jim lead it now, Karl and Gee-Gee continue to go out and be consistent, Belle and Alan do the same and I am nicknaming Alan's dog the Drahthaar Demon. Gretchen and I are limping in fourth. Slick, Piper, Jazzmine, and Sugar are all coming so we will just have to see where this goes. Jr. Hunter Gus picks up the lead here, with Fancy, Tucker and Ge coming in quick. Reba is right there with one trial so we have us a race in Jr too. I want to again thank Lisa Summers for handling the bird planting. We all owe her for taking a load off the rest of us, and Sal we miss your boys!! Also from me to everyone who helped me being injured many thanks there to. Hope to see you at the next one. Be safe and watch out for tree branches at the start line. Saturdays Placements, Gun Dog, 3 Braces/ 6 Dogs total 1 st -Duece-David Page, 2 nd -Tori-Brent Jacobs, 3 rd - Wyatt-Todd Felitz, 4 th Daja-Jim Scroeder Sr. Hunter 12 Braces/24 Dog total 1 st -Slick-Todd Felitz, 2 nd -Jazzmine-Deb Shroeder, 3 rd -Auzzie-Kit Chritchlow, 4 th -Loot-Larry Dubel Jr. Hunter 4 Braces/ 8 dogs total 1 st -Co-Co-Dave Ayers, 2 nd Tucker-Jim Shroeder, 3 rd Mick-Erik Ersland, 4 th Gus-Karl Vom Wolf News- Jr. Hunter-It was nice weather all weekend. New guy Dave Ayers came out and put up a 1 st with Co-Co, in Jr. Great start there Dave, hope you had fun. Erik Ersland and a rescued Pointer proved that he has a hunter with a third. Jim and Karl are used to ribbons by now. Sr. Hunter- Slick and Todd go out and put up what I believe is a club record of 11 finds and 36 points in Sr. Hunter!!! I think I can take him off the Rodney Dangerfield no respect list now? It sucks to be the one writing this, how much can I get away with on a run like that? I think this is a club record! Jim says he had 31 or so with High-Ball several years ago but they carried him off on a stretcher. I guess all I can say is great to have a dog that can put that up and do it for someone else to boot. Thanks Todd and Slick once in a lifetime run. Jasmine and Debbie figured to have it bagged with 22 points and get a TOC qualification and a 2 nd, Kit and Auzzie showed up and put down a nice 3 rd with 15, and Larry Dubel with Loot looks to be quite a contender for now and ready for birds this spring. GunDog- Dave Auten was not present, but Deuce was and he also put up a nice first, a TOC qualification being run by Dave Page, is this strategy??? Brent and Tori kept the heat up in Gun Dog, and Jim gets Daja qualified for Gun Dog TOC, you guys better take note on Daja and Jim I think he is sneaking her in TOC to tear it up??? I m just saying! Todd is chasing High Point with Wyatt guys so good luck. Continued.
5 Sundays Placements Gun Dog 4 Braces 8 Dogs 1 st -Duece-David Page, 2 nd -Wyatt-Todd Felitz, 3 rd -Hobie-Tom Wheeling, 4 th -Ranger-Jim Cassara Sr. Hunter 11 Braces 22 Dogs 1 st -Piper-Russell Page, 2 nd -Belle-Alan Churchwell, 3 rd -Di-Ki Porter, 4 th -Crown-Jim Schroeder Jr. Hunter 4 Braces 8 Dogs 1 st -Reba-Ted Bounds, 2 nd -Hannah-Kit Critchlow, 3 rd -Co-Co Dave Ayers, 4 th Ge- Ki Porter News for Sunday- Jr. Hunter Ted and Reba look to be up and comers he put up a killer 19 point run, bet this dog is a contender in Gun Dog or Sr. next year and maybe a this years Jr. Dog to beat? Hannah and Kit are in this category also, trust me guys this Hannah Dog could be a tough one if we can keep Kit bringing her out. Then we have new guy Dave showing consistency with Co-Co two days in a row, and Ki with Ge. Looking good Jr s Sr. Hunter- Piper and Russell, You knew it was coming with the Page Dogs, always hanging back and charging at the end, keep an eye on Piper folks she finishes strong. Alan and Belle, This turns out to be a very determined dog/and handler combo. I expect this team to be at the top and possibly surprise everyone at TOC. Ki and Di that rhymes 16 points and another one for TOC, Great Job! Jim looks like you and Crown are making a run for Sr. High Point? If nothing else you and Deb make the chase fun, good job. Gun Dog- Deuce that s 2 firsts, maybe Dave A should let Dave P run him??? Wyatt and Todd are Gunnin for High Point. Tom glad to see the President show up and get a ribbon, I m sure this will add to the Sparky stories like 10x over now?? Finishing out was Jim and Ranger, looks like you guys in Gun Dog get to run last years High Point Champ. Good Job Jim. The Race for High Point and other Trial Trivia Gun Dog- OK we have 16 dogs qualified now with a pretty good run on first, I think Todd is pretty determined on this, but don t count the wookie out. I was talking bout Tori not Brent. If Deuce keeps it up he could make a run, and you never know who else could charge up. Sr. Hunter- This one is anyone s Gee-Gee and Crown are tied with Slick making a hard charge on Saturday. Belle, Piper, and Jasmine look like they are all jockeying for a position. This is the class to win in my opinion. It used to be if you put up a double # score here you were good. (Anything over 10) This year you have to be double that to contend. Look at it this way from a stat perspective. You have the potential for 9 points per bird in Gun Dog. You only get 3 in Sr. There is only 42 points difference between high point Gun Dog and Sr. Dog?? Think that one over. While I m in Sr. News here members. I m throwing my vote at this point to Karl for Most Improved Handler, and most improved dog Gee-Gee, unless something crazy happens. I ve been waiting for either him or Gee-Gee to slip so I can catch up, but it doesn t seem to be happening. There are over 16 dogs qualified in this class so now it s a run for the top or a position in the TOC bracket. JR. Hunter-We have 9 dogs qualified for the bring back of TOC this year so far. Hopefully we get some more. Right now it looks to be between Karl and Gus vs. Jim and Tucker. Top 4 in Class right now Gun Dog-GSP.Drahthaar,Pointer, Brittany Sr-GSP,GSP,Drahthaar,Drahthaar JR-Pointer,GSP,Visla,Pointer That s it we have the Upland Challenge/ Reg Trial next month and a double in Aug so you have 3 more before TOC. Keep training and conditioning for the race. Be safe and watch out for slips, trips and falls.
