1 City View Simmentals & Ivanhoe Angus 7th Annual Bull Sale with Guests, Sunnyside Simmentals Tuesday, March 21, :00 pm Johnstone Auction Mart Moose Jaw, SK

2 Welcome to our 7th Annual Sale! It s hard to believe we ve been at this for as many years as we have but one thing remains the same; our commitment to producing cattle that are right for the times. We are not ones to chase the latest trends or fads offered by the purebred industry. We believe in time tested genetics and only incorporating new ones with the goal of complimenting what already exists. The foundation in our mother cows is essential to our success. Time and time again, this industry has proven that consistency is key. We are very proud of the consistency bulls purchased through our offering have provided to their new owners. We are excited to continue working with Ron and Marilyn Mountenay of Ivanhoe Angus. It s awesome to work with people who are so similar to us in their ideas of good cattle. Tom and Sharon Turnbull of Sunnyside Simmentals are also back with us on the Simmental side of the offering. Both these groups have become great friends to us and we are very thankful for their support in this annual event. We d like to wish the good folks at Wascana Herefords much success in their new endeavours. Again this year, groups of top quality replacement heifers sired by bulls who sold in previous years, will be available. Blair & Steph Yuke and Rick & Bonnie Clubbe are offering females from the top of their replacement pens. The quality of these females is outstanding and we strongly believe they d be a great addition to any program. We feed bulls with longevity in mind on a high forage diet. We continue to use our own grains along with a bull development pellet. We have always taken pride in presenting our bulls to you in their working gear in hopes that they remain able to develop and grow in the coming years. You will notice our weaning weights may be lower than other herds. We do not introduce grain until close to weaning so the weaning weights you see here are weights off the cow. You may also notice that many of the bulls are mothered by City View cows, something we take great pride in. Finally, and maybe most importantly, we would like to thank our family. City View began as three kids over 25 years ago and has evolved to what it is today. On behalf of Blaine, Brian and myself, I d like to give major credit that isn t given enough to Tina, Lisa and Aaron who work as hard as any of us at this. Also to Dad and Mom & Rick ~ thank you for saying yes to all the crazy ideas we have! If we can be of any assistance prior to the sale, please give us a call. We welcome you to the farm anytime; Come for a visit and see the bulls. You can also see them at Johnstone s starting March 20. Come early and enjoy our hospitality! Check out our website for more information on the bulls or look for us on Facebook for year round updates. The Barnett Family Blaine & Tina or Joe Brian It is our pleasure to welcome everyone to the 7th Annual City View Simmentals and Ivanhoe Angus Bull Sale with Sunnyside Simmentals. Ivanhoe Angus has had the pleasure of Dreaming It, Believing It, and Achieving It. Over the past 30 years in the the purebred Angus business. The dream has been achieved by our family developing their own interests in the livestock industry. This dream continues with our grandchildren involved in the 4-H program. Family ~ the ones we work with, laugh with and love Ron and I truly believe that we have been blessed with the opportunity to develop our herd of Ivanhoe Angus cattle. This blessing has had its ups and downs but the downs only make the ups that much better. This past summer we had the great pleasure of hosting a pasture tour for The Heart of the South Angus Tour. Being part of the tour we were able to achieve our goal of displaying our herd and breeding program to many Angus producers and friends. It was a wonderful opportunity to host and enjoy a few days of Angus fellowship. Again this year both yearling and two year old bulls are being developed on a Nutrena ration. The two year old bulls were summered on pasture. Grandpa Charlie Harlton always told us, The time to sell something is when someone wants to buy it. This is why we are offering only two 2 year old bulls this year. They will be semen tested and ready to go. The yearling bulls will be vet inspected prior to the sale and can return to the farm where we will continue to develop them. The bulls will be semen tested and delivered in the spring. We are pleased to offer a very uniform group of bulls which we feel have strong breed character and are structurally correct. We will not have the bulls pictured in the book this year but will be sending a flyer with pictures and more information in early March. Ivanhoe will also be consigning 8 impressive replacement heifers to the sale. These heifers are very long spined and are very attractive. They are also developed on a Nutrena ration and will be vet inspected and pasture ready. We would like to wish Wascana Herefords all the best in the coming years. Ron and I enjoy learning from Harvey and Brad s great livestock knowledge. Ron and I sincerely thank all our customers who have supported the Ivanhoe program. We welcome you to come to the farm and view the sale animals and their sires and dams. Please accept this as our invitation to join us on March 21 at Johnstone s. Come early, view the cattle and join us for lunch. Ron and Marilyn Mountenay Ron & Marilyn Marilyn Ron

He s become our go to for siring consistency and the type of cattle that are right for the times. He has seen extensive use each breeding season as a result. The Sarah cows play a major role at Boundary Ranch and at Kimlake prior to their dispersal. 129A is out of two black parents, making him a nondiluter and he is homozygous polled. We acquired 129A to add additional power and muscle mass to our red cattle and he did just that for us. When these calves hit the ground, you can see the shape and dimension we ve come to know from him right away. Perhaps his greatest strength is the pen of replacement females he has left us. They are beautiful females who have ideal udder structure and who will play an integral role in the future of our cowherd. His young mother is quickly becoming a standby for us producing a bull in last year s sale to Doug Brandt and now Dragon in her second attempt. She is unbelievably quiet and is always the first one to find you on pasture tours, making her a favourite of Brody and Addison and has a textbook udder. Dragon combines calving ease from her pedigree and performance from Stubby making him very versatile and functional for his new owner. Dillinger is a total freight train and is a contender for the longest sided bull in our offering. Many wise cattle producers will tell you length is the most difficult thing to breed into cattle and the quickest way to add significant pounds come fall. Dillinger is really clean in his make up and offers a boatload of maternal strength as well. She is the type of female who pours herself into producing a great product but still looks the part and comes home fat as a tick. We have a daughter working for us and a son is at Kress Livestock. Note the weaning to yearling spread Dakota achieved along with a very balanced and respectable EPD profile. This is the type of bull we d love to turn out on Angus based cows to add shape, dimension and hair. Dakota deserves a second look and comes with our stamp of approval all over him!

Because of the number of females who stem from the same cow family, we can only use him through AI on a few cows. In this case, Declaration is stacked with two of our most prolific cow families - Boss Lady and Unique. It can t get better than this!. We had only this bull and a heifer calf this year out of Brewhouse however they are each totally awesome! Declaration is a little lighter coloured which we feel only adds to his versatility. We maybe hadn t planned on spending $21000 but this first group certainly proves his worth. Rock ranks in the top 1% of the breed for calving ease and top 3% for birthweight but also offers great milk and carcass data. His calves are consistently designed and come long bodied, clean skulled and have awesome vigour at birth. These traits are no fluke. His pedigree is loaded with calving ease sires. Rock himself was able to knock significant pounds out of some older cows who we were having problems moderating birthweight. With back to back calving ease on either side of his pedigree, he sports a 15 calving ease EPD ranking him in the top 2% of the breed as well as being in the top 10% for birthweight. His black two year old dam is a stunning female with a perfect udder, much like his granddam, 12X, who is now being flushed because of her elite production. Look for groups of progeny from this cow family in a couple years. Just like Deuces Wild, they ll be absolutely awesome! 16 Sunnyside Simmentals The Turnbull Family Welcome to the City View Simmentals & Ivanhoe Angus Bull Sale! We would like to thank the Barnett and Mountenay families for the opportunity to again be part of this great sale. Thank you to everyone who attended last year s sale and made it such a success. Our family has been raising Simmental cattle in the beautiful Qu'Appelle Valley west of Lumsden since I am grateful and blessed to continue to be part of such a great breed. This year, the bulls have been wintered at City View Simmentals with their bulls. Working with the Barnett s, we felt offering one pen of bulls at the sale was beneficial for you the buyers but also easier on the bulls themselves. Our bulls have been fed there since October 1 using the same pelleted ration. Please don't hesitate to call if you have any questions. Looking forward to visiting with you at the sale. All the best! 27 Be sure to join us for Bonnie s lunch at 11:30 sponsored by Prairie Plains Agro EPD 101 Buying your next herdsire is a complicated process; Studying genetic profiles, analyzing performance data, and working through scientific values is a huge task. We found these explanations of EPD values very straight forward and helpful. EPD s cannot be compared from breed to breed and are a single tool. Our belief is that EPD s should not be taken over actual performance results or the animal itself. Calving Ease (CE) - The ease with which a bull s calves are born to first calf heifers. The larger EPD indicates a higher percentage of unassisted births for calves sired by that bull. Birth Weight (BW) - Calf weight at birth adjusted to the dam s age. The larger EPD indicates a heavier average birth weight. Weaning Weight (WW) - Calf weight taken between 160 and 250 days of age and adjusted to 205 days of age and to the dam s age. The larger EPD indicates a heavier average weaning weight for calves sired by that bull. Yearling Weight (YW) - Weight taken between 330 and 440 days of age and adjusted to 365 days of age and to the dam s age. The larger EPD indicates a heavier average yearling weight for calves sired by that bull. Maternal Calving Ease (MCE) - The ease at which a bull s daughters calve as first calf heifers. The larger EPD indicates a higher percentage of unassisted births for calves born to the sire s daughters. Milk - The milk EPD is a predictor of a sire s genetic merit for milk as expressed in his daughters production, or in other words, the part of weaning weight attributed to milk genes. The larger EPD indicates heavier average weaning weights due to daughter s greater maternal ability. Total Maternal (TM) - A bull s ability to pass on milk production and growth rate through his daughters. It predicts the total weaning (direct and maternal) that will be displayed in his daughter s offspring. It is calculated by adding half of the Weaning Weight EPD with the Milk EPD. The larger EPD indicates higher pounds at weaning.
