Blantyre City Mass Vaccination Drive Year 3 Report 22nd April 24th May

Plan Week 1 22nd 26th April Week 2 29th April 3rd May Week 3 12th 17th May Week 4 20th 24th May 44 Static Point vaccination sites across the city of Blantyre. Working ward by ward from the west of the city to the east of the city. The same successful vaccination strategy employed since 2015 using a combination of static points and door-to-door vaccinations was used this year. Education teams precede the vaccination teams using a combination of community sensitisation and school lessons to teach people and children about rabies and to advertise the upcoming vaccination

campaign. Week 1 8,850 Dogs Vaccinated Static Points Date Sat 22nd April Sun 23rd April Static Point Location Chemusa Assemblies pvt school Chileka Roundabout Chirimba PS Mbayani PS Namatete PS 9d Catholic Institute (CI) PS Mulunguzi PS Namasimba PS Namiwawa PS Samaritan trust St James catholic PS (Chilomoni) th to 26th April 4,524 dogs were entered by 22 sub-teams walking door-to-door. The teams worked incredibly hard and succeeded in covering all the high population density areas near the week 2 static point sites. 1,156 cats were vaccinated at static points and on door to door work in week

The teams completed the areas quickly and were able to cover some of the area s missed in week 1.

Week 4 7,774 Dogs vaccinated Static Points Date Sat 20th May Sun 21st May Static Point Location Bangwe Catholic School Chigumula PS Chisombezi PS Mapanga Misesa PS Mpingwe PS Namatapa PS Bangwe CCAP school Chigumula clinic Mzamba PS Naizi (Namyango) PS Bangwe Catholic School Dogs The green area in this map acted as a trial site for static point only vaccinations. There was no door to door work in this area. The teams successfully completed the walking zones that remained from previous weeks. An additional 1982 dogs were vaccinated and 3,586 data points entered.

Overview We have vaccinated slightly less dogs this year compared to last year. One area of the city was used as a trial site for static point only vaccinations and teams didn t go door to door in these areas. Additionally we have seen significantly fewer puppies and more neutered animals compared to last year. This is testament to the hard work of the WVS and BSPCA teams % 32.61% % neutered adult % neutered female 23.09% 32.07% 8.01% 12.02% % neutered male 34.79% 44.40% % puppies

Education Since the beginning of April, when the citywide education drive started 64,382 children were educated in 26 public schools. 432 teachers were also present during these lessons and they will be able to answer questions in the future and could refresh the information given to the pupils later on. The teams are doing an amazing job being out spreading the word about our work every day. On days during the school holidays or when exams are held the education officers are visiting public places and attend meetings arranged by ward councilors to talk to adults about the dangers of rabies and to advertise the static vaccination points. When there are no meetings they just move around in vehicles and on foot, delivering loudspeaker announcements or just chatting to people on the streets or when they are out working in the field. 137,635 children educated 53 schools 3,086 teachers educated

WVS / Mission Rabies Synergy The synergistic work between the Mission Rabies vaccination teams and the WVS surgical team is continuing to prove to be a brilliant team work and it has been very motivating for the staff members and volunteers that so many injured dogs they come across cane be helped straight away. During weekends the WVS team has been setting up field clinics at primary schools and severely injured dogs are taken there straight away for surgery or treatment. Non emergency cases are either taken to the BSPCA/WVS clinic for treatment during the following days or the owners are asked to bring their dog there during the next week. During the week, when the MR teams are walking door to door they are contacting Dagmar and Jo in the office who are then asking Difence to ring the owner of the dog, who is then arranging pick up of the animal, depending on the severity of the injury. The most common injuries during the first two weeks were broken legs requiring amputations (five legs have been amputated so far), severe wounds (one was a puppy which head was sliced open by a Machete) and many TVTs (some very severe). The TVTs are responding very well to Vincristine and we are seeing big improvements even after the first injections when they are coming back one week after. We have also treated several dogs which were neutered last year for other injuries and it s nice to see that the abdominal tattoos are very well visible one year after they were done. 374 Dogs sterilised in 10 days! 8 leg amputations, 5 enucleations.
