2 2 CCKP W B U lot of us have dogs that just can t resist diving into the nearest river, stream, canal or even the lake in the local park, but this sometimes can be dangerous for our pets and there are a few simple guidelines to follow. uring the ummer and early utumn months many stretches of water can be affected by a bacteria called Cyanobacteria, which results in the growth of algae in the water. nitially the algae is invisible to the eye but as numbers grow they start to clump together, and show up as green or brown dots. f conditions are ideal the algae can quickly spread or bloom and appear as a mat, or in large clumps all over the surface of the water. he algae isn't only unsightly though, it is also dangerous, to people and our dogs too, causing varying degrees of illness and death can occur within 24hrs of exposure Y P f your dog does dive into an algae laden water though, what should you do? reat as an emergency Wash your dog as soon as possible and remove any algae residue (take care not to get any of it on yourself or your children too) o not let your dog lick itself uzzle your dog if necessary to prevent licking ake to the vet for a check up as soon as possible as your dog may need to be treated with activated charcoal or an emetic to make it vomit to remove any ingested particles. igns and symptoms of exposure to the toxin can appear 15minutes to 24hrs after exposure - ethargy ifficulty breathing xcessive salivation ack of coordination Vomiting Urination iarrhoea Convulsions Prevention is best so keep your dog on a lead around affected waters and keep an eye out for signs and posters warning of an outbreak.

3 CCKP W 3 We have had a few questions on our Facebook page about grass seeds and how they can be a problem so it might be worth mentioning them here. hey can be a problem for all dogs but hairy, floppy earerd dogs like Cockapoos, and dogs with hairy feet are particularly prone to having trouble. he point of the grass seed is like an arrowhead and works its way through the fur on the paws and usually into the space between the dogs toes, digging itself into the sensitive skin in the paw. hey can also enter the dogs ear canal. he shape of the grass seed makes it easy for it to work itself right down into the ear canal until it is stopped by the ear drum. f course both these things cause the dog pain, irritation, set up infection and the dog may exhibit signs like frequent shaking of the head or lameness. n short the dog can be made very miserable by these little things. nce they have entered the paw or the dogs skin the seed keeps travelling and can work itself up into the dogs leg, or through the paw and out the other side, so a trip to the vet and surgery may be needed. o remove it. hey can also enter the dogs eyes or nose, t may be worth keeping your dog away from long grassy areas in the ummer months when the seed heads have formed, and a good groom after walks in long grassy areas is a good idea, checking all the areas for problems. Keeping the fur around the ears and paws so seeds can be spotted and removed easily may also help. f your dog shows any signs of pain, irritation, licking his paws, any signs of cysts or irritation or is shaking his head a lot then take to the vet for a good check just to make sure doubt there are many of us who haven't at some time allowed our dogs to have a sly lick of an ice cream cone or choc-ice but is it safe to do so? ogs do not possess decent amounts of lactase the enzyme that breaks down lactose in milk milk and other milk-based products can cause them diarrhoea or an upset tummy. ome dogs though are more lactose intolerant than others just like some people cant tolerate lactose, it is the same with our pooches, and they should avoid all dairy products to avoid illness. For dogs that are not lactose intolerant, what can they have? K contains lost of vitamins etc but also has high levels of lactose so could upset any dogs tummy. t can be used in recipes for doggy treats though. C CH low in lactose and contains probiotics which is good for an upset tummy. ive in moderation now and again. C C he odd lick of ice cream isn't going to hurt but there are things to be aware of with ice cream. on t give flavours that have raisins, chocolate or artificial sweetner in them. Probably best to kept to a little lick as a very special treat. YHU yogurt with live bacteria, low fat content, and no artificial sweeteners can be ok for a dog now and again. CH ost have less lactose than milk and so can be given in small quantities now and again. nes low in sodium and fat are even better C he basic rule of dog food for dogs, human food for humans is a good one but a small treat, now and again probably wont do any harm and lets us feel we are Y sharing.

F U s a club part of our reason for setting up was to help raise money for the national charity Hearing ogs for eaf People, and we welcome all the support our members give in this aim. H trains dogs to assist a deaf adult or child in their day to day life. Being deaf can be frightening and isolating. magine for a moment being a um and not knowing if your baby is crying or your child calling for you in the night. magine being at home and not knowing someone is ringing the doorbell, or the fire alarm is going off, or your phone is going. ther simple day to day sounds like someone talking to you in the shop or the oven timer pinging also go undetected eaf children also get scared at night because they cant hear the normal household sounds that so many of us take for granted. magine not knowing if your baby is crying or the fire alarm is going off, or if your child is calling for you in the night. Hearing og is trained for each recipient, according to their individual needs and the dog and its recipient are supported throughout their partnership. he training from birth of puppy, through socialization and then training as a Hearing og takes about 14mths and costs 45,000 per dog. his is where we, as a club, come in and we are very proud of what we have achieved so far. We would like some ideas for fundraising now to take us forward and which YU would like to be involved in, so please put your thinking hats on and lets take our fundraising into the next stage which is to reach the 10,000 level C P 1 cup wholemeal flour 1/2 cup Peanut Butter 1/4 cup Honey 1tbs Virgin Coconut il 1 cup chicken broth 1 cup oats 1 cup plain flour ix flours and oatmeal in a bowl. Blend Peanut butter, honey, coconut oil and chicken broth together and gently pour into flour and oat mix, blending together as you pour. ip out mix onto a dusted surface and roll out to about 1/4 deep Put on a baking tray and cook in a preheated oven on as 4, 350F or 180C for approx 15 minutes
