1 4-H Notes November 9, 2018 What s New! Club Officer Training Tomorrow! There will be a training session for Presidents, Vice Presidents, Secretaries, Treasurers, Club Reporters and Camp Representatives/Reporters on Saturday, November 10th at the Manitowoc County Office Complex at 4319 Expo Drive, Manitowoc. A change this year is that all club officers will meet at the same time from 9:30 11:00 am and a pizza lunch will be served from 11:00 11:30 am. It s important that all of the listed officers attend, even if you have previously held an office or have been re-elected to the same office. You re a valuable resource and we would like you to share your officer experience with youth who are just starting to serve in club leadership roles. Tom Pease is coming to Camp TaPaWingo this Sunday at 5:00pm! Tom Pease will be performing at Manitowoc County 4-H Camp Tapawingo on Sunday, November 11th, at 5 pm. Invite your friends and join us for this "FREE" FUN EVENT! Gather the family, and make it a day to remember! We invite you to arrive a little early and reserve your seat. Food, drinks and lots of silly singing will be served up that day! 2018 Fall Project Central- Last day to sign up is this Monday the 12 th! A Fall Project Central workshop has been planned for Saturday, November 17 at the Manitowoc County Office Complex. There are two session 9:00 10:15 am and 10:30 11:45 am. Please find a description of projects offered and registration information attached. Space is limited, so register early to reserve your spot! Project Central: Woodworking Tom Klesper is a former Washington County 4-H member and a new Manitowoc County 4-H Woodworking Project Leader from the Two Rivers area. Tom is willing to work with a small group of youth to teach them woodworking skills and help them with their woodworking projects. Here is what Tom has to say: If any 4-H ers (up to four) are interested in making wood working projects, I have a small shop with power tools and I am willing to teach/help them with their project. My shop is upstairs, so it is not handicap accessible. Some school shop experience would be helpful but is not required. Youth would be responsible for purchasing their wood, safety glasses, hearing protection, and dust masks for sanding. If the project is going to have a finish, some finishes may also need to be purchased. Projects could include small tables, shelving units or other things. We would meet twice a week for less than 2 hours for several weeks to complete the projects. During the first meeting, youth should have ideas of what they would like to make. If formal plans are not available, we can reverse-engineer simpler projects and estimate the wood requirements. Also, if projects are overly aggressive for the timeframe or the child s skill, I may suggest downsizing. During that meeting we will also decide on future meeting dates and times, so youth should know their

2 schedule. Attending all meetings is not critical, but if too many meetings are missed, projects may not get completed. If you are interested in this opportunity, please contact Tom directly at Citizenship Washington Focus Registration Opens November 15, 2018 (Grades 10-12) Citizenship Washington Focus, or CWF for short, is the premier week long 4-H citizenship and leadership experience. CWF is either June 15-23, 2019 or July 6-14, CWF brings 4-H delegations from all over the country to stay in the National 4-H Conference Center in Chevy Chase, Maryland, right outside our Nation s Capital! Participants learn about the roles of Senators and Representatives in the United States government and how these parts work together to form an effective Congress. Additionally, youth get to see and experience government in action by meeting with their State s members of Congress and watching a House of Representatives meeting. The Manitowoc County 4-H Leaders Association and the 4-H Teen Ambassadors pay half the cost of educational trips. Funds are limited and given out on a first come, first served basis. If you would like to attend CWF, please contact Wendi Holschbach at wendiholschbach@co.manitowoc.wi.us or before registration on November 15, 2018 to reserve funding for the trip. Registration opens on November 15 at 4:00 pm and is done through 4-H Online. This trip fills up fast, so register at 4:00 pm on November 15 if possible. Citizenship Washington Focus Information Attention All 4-H Clubs Holiday Party at Southfield Townhouses The 4-H Teen Ambassadors would like to invite all 4-H Clubs to collect new winter items for children. If anyone would like to join this committee, please contact Debbie Backhaus at (920) Thanks again. The Scholarship Endowment Silent Auction Committee 4-H Enrollment Fees The 4-H Enrollment Fees for this year are $23 for 4-H members and $24 for 4-H members in the Horse Project. Horse Project members pay an additional $1 for accident insurance. To be a member in good standing, the 4-H Enrollment Fee must be paid. Members who fail to pay their enrollment fee will not be

3 permitted to show at the county fair in If you still have outstanding enrollment fees from last year, you will not be permitted to participate in 4-H this year until fees are paid. If you are unable to pay the enrollment fee due to a financial hardship, please contact your club Main Leader. 4-H Clubs are expected to cover enrollment fees for members with a financial hardship. Enrollment fees are collected by the Manitowoc County 4-H Leaders Association to fund events, activities, and education. The current annual budget for the Manitowoc County 4-H Leaders Association is a little over $25,000. The Manitowoc County 4-H Leaders Association relies on enrollment fees, an annual club Family Fee (which replaced a county-wide fundraiser) and Plat Book sales to meet their annual budget. The budget will be discussed at the next Manitowoc County 4-H Leaders Association meeting, which is scheduled for Monday, November 26 at 7:00 pm at the Manitowoc County Office Complex. The meeting is open to 4-H members and their families. If you would like to learn more about the annual budget and/or have ideas for raising additional funds, please plan to attend the meeting.
