September 2017 New Intern Spotlight Hello, my name is Kelly Toms. I am interning this fall and winter with the Volunteer Services Department. Aside from this internship, I am enrolled at both Eastern Michigan University and Washtenaw Community College for Health Administration and Nursing and will be graduating from both next year. I am also married and have a six-year-old daughter. As a family we like to spend our time outdoors and travel as much as possible. I have done my clinicals for nursing here at St. Joe's, which has already been an amazing experience. I am incredibly excited to start this internship and meet many of the volunteers here. If you have any questions feel free to contact me at Content Intern Spotlight 1 Harvest Time Recipe 3 News / Reminders 2 Benefits of Volunteering 4 Birthdays 5 1
News / Reminders Hand Hygiene Reminder With flu season just around the corner, now is a great time to review the easiest way to prevent the spread of disease. Procedure: Moisten hands well with running water. Apply soap to wet hands and work up a lather with friction. Rub all surfaces for at least seconds; remember between fingers and around the nails. Rinse with the running water. Dry hands thoroughly with a paper towel and use the towel to turn the faucet off. When to wash your hands: On arrival to work Before leaving the restroom Before and after eating After removing gloves Between handling patients After blowing or wiping the nose Before leaving from work *Hand sanitizer is a good alternative if hand washing is not an option at the time. Remember, hand washing is the single most effective way to reduce the spread of infection. Let's stop it in its tracks! 2
Harvest Time Recipe Parmesan Zucchini and Yellow Squash Bake Zucchini and squash are end of summer treats that pair perfectly with antioxidant rich tomatoes and delicious parmesan and feta. Zucchinis are packed full of nutrients including: potassium, Vitamin A, and Vitamin B. Yellow squash are a rich source for: Vitamin A, fiber, and manganese (a mineral that helps in processing fats and carbs). Lastly, don't let the cheese fool you, parmesan is naturally low in fat and is packed with calcium and protein. While feta is a cancer fighting cheese with calcium and anti-inflammatory properties. September is all about the harvest with enjoying fresh vegetables before the cold frost starts coming in. Ingredients: 4 medium-sized yellow squash and/or zucchini sliced lengthwise and then into 1/4 inch slices (about 8 cups sliced squash) 1 Tbsp olive oil 1 Tbsp minced garlic 1 Tbsp fresh thyme leaves or 1/2 tsp dried thyme 2 tomatoes sliced 2 eggs 1/3 cup light sour cream 1 cup crumbled feta not tightly packed 2 Tbsp grated parmesan cheese 1 T lemon juice Salt and pepper - to taste Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees and spray a large casserole dish with nonstick spray. 2. Slice the squash and zucchini into 1/4" slices. If they are larger squash, cut them down the middle before slicing. 3. Heat oil in a large non-stick frying pan. 4. Add the squash, zucchini, garlic, and thyme; then sauté just until the squash is starting to soften. 5. Remove from heat and add sliced tomatoes. 6. Beat together the eggs, sour cream, cheeses and lemon juice in a medium sized bowl. 7. Place half of the squash mixture into the bottom of the casserole and spread ½ of the egg mixture over the top with salt and pepper to taste. 8. Repeat with remaining squash and egg mixtures. 9. Top with additional feta and Parmesan if desired. 10. Bake for minutes, until the mixture is bubbling. 11. Serve hot. 3
The Benefits of Volunteering How does volunteering make you a happier person? The best reason to ever start volunteering should be because you want to help others and make a difference in someone else's lives. But did you know that you are actually getting something out of it too? Studies have shown that being passionate about helping others helps release pleasure neurotransmitters; meaning those who enjoy giving back to others are more happy in their own lives on average. Studies have also shown a relation between volunteering and health benefits. Those who commit to helping others are physically and mentally more healthy than those who do not. Those who have committed their time to volunteering have reported feeling less stressed, more healthy, and seeing the world around them change for the better. Some simple ways you can help others today: Holding a door open for someone Actively listening to someone else Help carry groceries to someone's car for them Smiling and greeting them, even if you've never met them SoulVibe.com 4

Opportunities If interested in any of these opportunities, please contact: Darlene Wilson at or Welcome Ambassador - Ann Arbor & Livingston This customer focused opportunity is for friendly individuals with great people skills to assist in the Reichert entrance, Ann Arbor Cancer Center, and Livingston entrances as one of the first faces patients will see. You will greet and assist patients as they arrive and make sure their needs are met (questions answered, wayfinding to their destination, etc.). This is an amazing way to help those in need and make their visit more comfortable. Pet Therapy In need of compassionate and dedicated registered Pet Therapy teams for patient visits or greeting and escorting visitors in the lobby. The SJMHS Pet Therapy Program is a unique way that we show compassion to our patients, their families, and even our hospital staff. Pet Therapy visits lift the spirits of our patients and help them reconnect and give them unconditional love, which boosts their mental and physical health. Home Infusion Pharmacy We are in need of volunteers in our home infusion pharmacy department at our Ann Arbor location to assist with organizing and filing new patient welcome/information packets, filing new Start-of-Care IV kits, and filing other patient paperwork in clinical charts. This position requires 70% sitting, 10% walking, and 20% standing. Outpatient Behavioral Services Volunteer needed to prep paper charts for scanning into the medical record, prep bulk mailings, filing, make new patient packets, copy and re-stock forms and other duties as assigned in the Outpatient Behavioral Services office in Ann Arbor. Quality Benchmarking Volunteer Volunteers are needed in the Quality Benchmarking office in the Reichert building to do post-op mailings and phone calls to patients following their spine surgery. The patients are sent 3 follow-up questionnaires to track their progress at 90 days, 12 months and 24 months. Volunteers would be preparing materials for mailing these to the patients and calling patients to follow up. Special Project in St. Joseph Mercy Cancer Center Ann Arbor This special project entails stuffing leather binders that will be distributed to cancer patients at the Ann Arbor location. Assistance from the satellite sites (Livingston, Brighton, Canton) would be much appreciated. It does involve lifting boxes of binders and lifting boxes of inserts. This is an ongoing project. 6
