WORKING 9:00-5:00 HSOV ALUMNI KITTIES WITH SUCCESSFUL CAREERS WYNONA.. This beautiful girl has a rags-to-riches story with a fairytale ending. Wynona had been abandoned at the HSOV sometime during the overnight/early morning hours on March 23, 2012, and she was patiently waiting when our staff arrived that day. Wynona was a gorgeous long-haired calico kitty with a pretty face which was framed in wispy hair. She was believed to be a senior citizen and adored attention. It broke our hearts to see the URGENT status next to her name on May 14 th simply because the cat cages were nearly filled to capacity A special young man, Charlie Clay, called the shelter about a week later and said that he wanted to give Wynona a home. Our Adoptions Clerk, Sharon Morris, asked if he wanted to come and meet Wynona first, and he replied that he had already fallen in love with her and that wouldn t be necessary! Charlie came to the shelter and officially adopted Wynona on May 28, 2012 and told us that she would be going to work with him every day at his shop (Dad s Primitive Workshop, 268 Front Street, Marietta, Ohio). Wynona has fit in purrfectly and is a favorite of customers who visit Charlie s shoppe. Though she is supposedly a working girl, Wynona actually spends most of her days taking leisurely naps amidst the merchandise and is looking much younger these days. CHABLIS.. We met this beautiful kitty recently when we stopped by Fur s A Flyin Pet Grooming and were pleased to learn that she has had a successful career there after Cheryl Hall gave her a foster home in August Chablis had been brought to the HSOV on May 22, 2012 along with her three 4-day old kittens. She raised beautiful babies who were quickly adopted, but since Momma Chablis was deemed to be a little unfriendly, she did not find a home. Sadly, she was placed on urgent status. That s when Cheryl decided Chablis might make a good shop kitty, and Chablis was hired to work at Cheryl s grooming business. It was there that Cheryl discovered Chablis was deaf (which was actually an asset since Chablis could care less about the barking dog customers). Chablis is beautiful these days and looks like a model for Cat Fancy Magazine in her flashy pink collar. She is the unofficial office manager and greets customers (when she is so inclined). MARIA.. This little beauty is the most recent HSOV kitty to have been interviewed and hired as an office girl Maria was surrendered by her owner on July 26, 2013, and she had all of the qualifications that Jeri Knowlton was looking for when she visited the shelter on September 19, 2013 to find the perfect cat for the Marietta/Washington County Convention/Visitors Bureau. Maria had a calm, gentle personality, loved attention (and people), and also had a wistful please take me home look in her eyes. Maria was hired immediately and left the shelter with Jeri that day! Jeri had thought about changing her name to Marie Antionette for whom Marietta, Ohio was named~ Lynne Sturtevant (Hidden Marietta/Ghost Trek) posted on her Facebook timeline recently that she had visited the Marietta/ Washington County Convention/Visitors Bureau and (in her own words).. I met the most delightful new staff member [Maria] at the CVB today. She is not only cute, friendly, and talkative, she came from the HSOV. She really adds a fun and very positive vibe to the office. And posed the question HOW S THE ATMOSPHERE IN YOUR WORKPLACE?. Are there any other business establishments who would be interested in an office kitty?? 2 If you have seen the beautifully-crafted donation boxes displayed at local business establishments in Marietta, Ohio with the HSOV logo on them, you will surely agree that they are works of art but did you realize that they are also a labor of love by the individuals who created them? We d like to share that story with our readers The Donation Box Project was started in March 2007 by three individuals (Jim Baldinger, Louise Holmes, and Tom Martin), and they are still actively maintaining the project. Louise designed the donation boxes. Tom Martin (who happens to be Louise s uncle) has constructed a total of 16 boxes in his woodworking shop. Louise keeps them decorated and also has donation envelopes printed and supplied with each box. And from the beginning, Jim Baldinger diligently took on the job of collecting money from all boxes, coordinating with Tom to keep them in repair, and with Louise to keep them decorated. Several area businesses helped with donations of materials: Lowe s (wooden materials); Apex Feed & Supply (hinges and hasps); and Ace Lock (locks). In June 2007, the following businesses agreed to become supporters of the HSOV by displaying and maintaining the original 12 boxes in their locations: Ace Lock, American Flags & Poles, Byers Reno Exxon, Faces By Design, Green Meadow Veterinary Hospital, Gwen McHenry DVM, Norwood Tavern, Peoples News-Marietta, Twisted Sisters Boutique, Weber s Boutique, Weber s Grocery, We Lov Pets. Most of the donation boxes are designed to be displayed on a countertop, but Dairy Queen (who became a supporter) requested a second donation box for their location that could be placed at their drive-thru. Tom designed a speciallyconstructed one for them that was weather-resistant (which we took the opportunity to photograph on a recent drive-thru!) We had the pleasure of visiting with Tom Martin in his woodworking shop and had a delightful morning chatting with him about his involvement in the Donation Box Project. Tom has a charismatic personality and a wonderful sense of humor. His niece shared with us that Tom will be an amazing 87-years young in January 2014! There are two designs (one which features a black cat and another which features a black dog) and both have the HSOV inscription at the bottom. Trudy has personally hand-painted each of these ornaments, and there are no two exactly alike. They are available for purchase at the shelter and also American Flags & Poles, Buttermore Jewelers, Twisted SIsters Boutique and WeLovPets. Cost is $10/each and proceeds will be donated to the HSOV. Thank you Trudy for donating your time and talents to create these special keepsakes to help the shelter animals The Humane Society of the Ohio Valley will hold its annual meeting on Tuesday, December 3, 2013 at 7pm at the Marietta Township Recreation Center (former Reno School), located at 260 Sandhill Road, Reno, Ohio. There will be a short business meeting followed by election of board members. Everyone is invited to attend. Based on the Amendment to the HSOV Bylaws effective October 1, 2013, members who paid 2013 membership dues on or before October 1, 2013 are eligible to vote. Those members who paid 2013 membership dues after October 1, 2013 are not eligible to vote and may receive a refund or apply towards 2014 membership dues. Appetizers, soft drinks, and coffee will be served. HSOV HOLIDAY OPEN HOUSE - CANCELLED The Holiday Open House which was planned for Sunday, December 8 th has been cancelled due to several home improvement projects which are currently underway at the shelter. We are in the midst of re-surfacing painted concrete floors as well as replacing all the windows and doors in the facility, and it just isn t very conducive at the moment for hosting a party The shelter will still be beautifully decorated, and our Christmas tree will be in the lobby should anyone wish to leave some gifts beneath the tree for our dogs and cats. If you d like some suggestions of items they would like, we ve conveniently included our Wish List in this newsletter with some helpful hints

4 If there was a Make A Wish Foundation for dogs, it would seem likely that Phoenix (aka Warren ) was this year s recipient.. Warren is a sweet 1-1/2 year old male Pit Bull Terrier mix who arrived at the HSOV on July 22, 2013 after he was picked up on Warren Street in Marietta, Ohio. This little guy melted everyone s heart when he looked up at you with hopeful, trusting eyes. Warren didn t appear to have been treated with much kindness in his young life He was starved for attention as well as for food, and he loved affection, petting, and babytalk. We listed this sweet boy as a Special Needs Dog because of his physical condition and also because he had a swollen lymph node/possible growth on the right-hand side of his neck. Everyone who met Warren and followed his story on our Facebook page fell in love with him. Two of our volunteers who faithfully show up at our Saturday Dog Walks (Nicole and Clay Clatterbuck) showed an immediate interest in meeting Warren and vowed that they were going to make it their mission to show this beautiful boy what love is On July 29 th Warren s guardian angels (in the earthly form of Nicole and Clay Clatterbuck) came to take him home to foster. They posted pictures of him that evening, and he looked soo happy and content Nicole and Clay decided to give him a new name in honor of the beginning in his new life and that new name was to be Phoenix. Phoenix enjoyed being a pampered pup (probably for the first time in his life), and he was a real gentleman from day one. He was great with the other family dogs, cats, and the Clatterbuck s young children. Phoenix was a perfect fit in their household and seemed to have been with them forever. In spite of good food and all of the love in the world, Phoenix was not gaining weight. The shelter made an appointment with a local veterinarian a few weeks later, and it was discovered that Phoenix tested positive for heartworms. In many shelters, this would have been very bad news for a dog Thank goodness for shelter/community/volunteer support in our area, this is not the case! Donations quickly began pouring in so that Phoenix could undergo the heartworm treatment. By this time, Nicole Clatterbuck was spending many hours a day responding to Phoenix Fan Club, so she established a facebook page just for him.. Following Phoenix (Warren).. so that everyone could share in his progress and accomplishments. Excerpts of postings which appeared on his facebook page from August through November are perhaps the best way of sharing his story: August 23 rd Finished the second heartworm injection and Phoenix did awesome! September 30 th Found out today that he still has some baby heartworms left which must be treated with a different medicine. He has not gained any weight and is still not very perky, so that makes the vet think that the growth on his neck is causing him some issues. We need to take him to Columbus (OSU) for tissue biopsy. He will need to be under anesthesia for this procedure. Note: There was a photo of Phoenix snuggled up in his blankets with this post and a caption that he was not feeling well after his meds today

5 October 1 st Phoenix officially has an appointment with the Oncology Dept at OSU next Tuesday at 10:45am. Please pray we get the best news possible that day. It will be nice to get answers but we are quite nervous. October 2 nd - Photos posted.. Phoenix is shown relaxing on the deck just sunbathing and enjoying the weather and another photo with him snuggled up next to Clay entitled someone missed their Daddy. October 4 th Photos posted.. Phoenix having breakfast yummm scrambled eggs high in protein and later that day.. Phoenix with a dirt-covered nose entitled Mom I promise I did not dig a hole in the yard and bury that bone you just gave me. October 7 th Tomorrow is the big day!! We go to OSU and begin getting answers. Please keep him in your prayers that they are good ones. (and there is a photo of Phoenix snoozing away with a tiny kitten sleeping on his back) October 8 th - This photo of Phoenix sitting in the back seat of the Clatterbuck van brought tears to many eyes. The caption was On My Way to OSU.. Wish Me Luck! He looked so proud (and so brave). Phoenix always wears that bright red harness instead of a collar because of the growth on his neck. Later that day.. Well, the news from OSU isn t good. Phoenix has thyroid cancer. It has spread to his lungs and is already in very late stages. This is why he isn t gaining weight. The vet here was an oncologist and was very honest with us that he doesn t have long. They said it may be a week or a month but it wouldn t be very long. She Phoenix on the way to OSU gave me signs and symptoms to watch for and when that happens, we will take him to the vet, give him kisses, and say goodbye. This is killing me but we know we have done everything for now, and we will just keep spoiling him rotten, give him lots of love, and when it s time.. say goodbye And later that night.. I want you all to know that even though we got a terminal prognosis today that all of your donations and support enabled us to get this far with Phoenix, and we can t thank you enough for that. We have had him for almost 3 months now, and he would not have survived this long without the treatment that he s received. We have been blessed that you all have cared and loved him without even knowing or meeting him and giving him this chance to survive. We are going to stay strong and try to stay positive and hope that we have a few more months (or longer) with him, but whatever the case may be, we love him and I know that he will know that. We couldn t have given him this much of a chance without you all and the Humane Society! October 27 th - Phoenix went trick-or-treating!! Still loving life, and he is as cute and cuddly as ever ) Clay Clatterbuck wants everyone to know that Phoenix is living out his remaining days being spoiled rotten and being loved by us and an entire community. Editor s Note: Nicole and Clay Clatterbuck have surely granted Phoenix wish to have a real home where he is loved, and he has been included in all of their family activities. Phoenix LOVES to ride in the car, so he goes everywhere with them. When Nicole was at the shelter on November 22 nd, she smiled and said that Phoenix was still doing great and when you see him, you d never guess that he has any health issues. Even the oncologist at OSU has remarked he has surprised her, so perhaps (and saying this with tears in my eyes) there is a miracle waiting to happen Phoenix and the Clatterbuck Family

6 "Hound Dog" Hound Dog has been making up for lost time and is giving me almost 2-years worth of doggie kisses. I think he is thanking me for not giving up hope in him. Sue Goff Little did we realize when we published an article in the August 2012 HSOV Newsletter about 50 dogs being surrendered to our shelter that we would have the pleasure of writing a follow-up story about one of those dogs.. This is the rest of the story about Hound Dog Hound Dog had shared his previous home with nearly 50 dogs and was most likely the patriarch of the family since so many of them resembled this handsome guy. A temporary shelter was set up at a Washington County Ohio Fairground building to house them when they arrived on April 13, 2012 since there was no space at the HSOV for this many new dogs. Shelter staff and volunteers spent the next two weeks to help care for those 50+ dogs. All of them were eventually adopted/rescued, but Hound Dog s future didn t seem very promising since he was not socialized and was fearful of people. He actually escaped from the fairground building on April 28 th and many believed that he had made his run for freedom and would never be seen again. One person who always believed that Hound Dog was a good dog vowed that she would foster him if he returned, and on May 2, 2012 Hound Dog came back to his cage as if he knew that Sue Goff always kept her promise Sue did indeed take Hound Dog home with her, and within a few hours he was eating out of her husband s hand and would walk up to Denny. Pretty amazing since nobody could even touch him just a few weeks ago. Hound Dog continued to take baby steps over the next several weeks and would allow a quick pat or scratch until he realized that a person was touching him. On June 10, 2012, Hound Dog started wagging his tail. That small gesture might not have seemed like much to anyone else, but to Sue Goff, this was a big breakthrough! By early August 2012, Sue had decided that Hound Dog was going to live with her forever And shortly thereafter, they had the most fantastic bonding experience in a most unexpected way. Sue didn t realize that her foster failure was afraid of storms, and she happened to be with him when a thunderstorm was brewing. Hound Dog was almost on her lap as she stroked him from head to toe.. and he LIKED it Over the next several months, he started doing dog things such as tearing the stuffing out of his bed and chewing on dog chews. But he still didn t want to venture out of his kennel and still barked at the other dogs Throughout all of Hound Dog s trials and tribulations, Sue faithfully kept telling him that he was a good dog. Fast forward to October Hound Dog finally began to venture out into the rest of the Goff s house to explore. He had been with them for 1-1/2 years, and they were hoping that by Winter 2013 he would be laying around the wood stove with the rest of their dogs. They said it was funny (yet sad) to watch him peek around the door, come out to explore, and then run back into his safe room. That all changed a few weeks later when Sue discovered that he had spent the night sleeping in her recliner The final breakthrough came in November 2013 when Sue was sitting on her deck steps, and Hound Dog came to her and wanted his head/ ears scratched.. and rolled over for a big old belly rub! Hound Dog is finally snoozing around the wood stove with the rest of the Goff s dogs and enjoying afternoon/evening walks with Sue, Denny, and his new brothers and sisters Thanks to Sue Goff, Hound Dog has learned to trust people and is living the good life

7 DUKE & IZZY.. FROM URGENT URGENT STATUS TO PAMPERED PUPS When we must make the decision to place animals on urgent status because our shelter is full to capacity, we do so with a heavy heart And this was certainly the case with Duke and Izzy Duke was an adult male Boxer mix who came to the HSOV on March 2, Izzy was a 3-year old female Saint Bernard mix who arrived on April 25, Both were surrendered by their owners and both were placed on urgent status on June 19 th. On October 22 nd they were both placed on urgent urgent status because of the length of time they d been in our shelter and had not yet found homes. Dogs were being placed in floor cages since there were no more empty kennels available. Duke Duke and Izzy s photos were placed in the URGENT HSOV DOGS ALBUM on our facebook page and featured close-up pictures of their hopeful faces. Several folks expressed an interest in them but for various reasons, neither Duke nor Izzy were a good fit for their homes. We were encouraged when there was an inquiry on October 28st via facebook from Angela Paszt asking about their status, and our Canine Rescue Coordinator (Celeste Ridgway) contacted Angela to talk about them. Much to our delight, Angela was interested in giving not just one but BOTH Izzy of them a home! There was, however, one requirement.. and that was they had to get along with each other. We must admit that we were a bit nervous when our kennel techs, Mary Buck and Ted Laskowski, leashed up Izzy and Duke for their meet-and-greet and first encounter with each other. Both Izzy and Duke had acquired a reputation in the shelter for not being very dog-friendly When they met outside (under Mary and Ted s watchful care), it was if as though they knew they had to pass this test in order to find the home that Angela was offering And soon they were playing with one another! On November 1 st, these two Duke & Izzy lucky dogs left the shelter in a private limousine with our chauffeurs, Ron and Debbie Friend, on their journey to the Cleveland, Ohio area where they were to meet their new mistress, Angela Paszt, and her family. Both Izzy and Duke were perfect passengers, and we LOVED this picture of them sitting in the backseat of Angela s car on the way to meet the rest of their new family Angela has posted several pictures on the HSOV Facebook page of Duke and Izzy in their new home, and they are living the life of luxury sleeping on nice beds and sofas. They have done well with the family s other dogs, and they are now playing with them and taking group walks together. This was truly a fairy-tale ending for Duke & Izzy. We couldn t have wished for a more perfect home for them! Thank you Angela Paszt for having faith and trusting them Izzy & Duke

8 WRITING OUR THANK-YOU NOTES The 11 th Annual HSOV Paws Walk/4 th Annual Ashlee Scott Memorial Parade-Your- Paws Walk was held on September 14th at the East Muskingum Park in Marietta, Ohio. This event is one of our most popular fundraisers, and we love to see the unique costumes that many of the dogs are wearing It s quite a sight to see so many paws making their walk through downtown Marietta! Thanks to Juanita Becker, Carol McKitrick, Lucy Scott and their committee members for organizing another successful Paws Walk! Over $4500 was raised for the benefit of the HSOV. Several HSOV Alumni dogs participated, and six shelter dogs also enjoyed walking their paws thanks to our dedicated volunteers Thank you to Lori-Friend Hanson (Hansons Enhancements Photography) and Ashley McMahan (The Dog Gone Groomer) for hosting the Pet Photo Fundraiser on August 31 st for the benefit of the HSOV Throw Down For The Pound 8: In the Dog House was held on October 12, 2013 and raised over $3000 for the HSOV. Thanks once again to Adam Johnson for organizing this fun-filled event for the benefit of our shelter Adam is on the HSOV Board of Directors. He is also Manager of the WeLovPets Store, Lafayette Center, Marietta, Ohio, and we d also like to thank WeLovPets and their staff for showcasing so many of our HSOV dogs and cats in their store to help them find homes. Thank you to The Station Lounge & Grill, Belpre, Ohio for hosting a Chili Cook Off for the benefit of the HSOV. This event was held on Sunday, October 13 th and raised over $500 in cash donations as well as many donated supplies for the shelter dogs and cats Sincere thanks to Cheryl Hall (Fur s A Flyin Pet Grooming) and Ashley McMahan (The Dog Gone Groomer) for donating their time and talents to groom shelter dogs (and a few cats) who were in desperate need of extreme makeovers. These special ladies work their magic and make the dogs feel (and look) like showdogs after spending time with them C&C Dodge/Toyota recently donated $5000 to the HSOV which was very much appreciated! Jim & Sheryl Cobb have been good friends/supporters of both the Marietta and Parkersburg shelter for several years. During the month of September 2013, the Central Christian Church chose the HSOV as the recipient of their We Appreciate You program. Besides praying for the shelter the entire month, they brought baskets full of homemade goodies for our staff. Church members Nellie Beardmore and Cheri Logan made the presentation. Rink Rash for Rescues Fundraiser was held on November 9 th and a portion of the proceeds were donated to the HSOV. The First Settlement Roller Derby Dames (aka Hades Ladies ) are comprised of several local ladies who love the HSOV, including Amanda Beebe and Amanda Herron This event not only raised monetary donations for the HSOV but also provided some great publicity for our shelter. Anastasia Beebe created a display board of shelter dogs and cats who were on urgent status to call attention to them.. thank you Ana!

9 WRITING OUR THANK-YOU NOTES The Marietta Memorial Hospital Surgery Department (pre-post, recovery room, and pre-admission testing) held a unique fundraiser for the HSOV and raffled off a lottery tree at MMH. They raised $250 which was used to purchase supplies for the shelter dogs and cats. Connie Voshel delivered donations on November 18 th, and as you can see, there was something for everyone! Thank you MMH Surgery Department!! Jim & Sylvi Caporale (American Flags and Poles) do so many nice things for our shelter and are modest about claiming credit. Jim can often be seen delivering bleach and other supplies (thanks to Big Lots), and he and Sylvi also spend many hours delivering and spreading gravel on our parking lot and driveway. Thank you Jim & Sylvi. Thanks to Nancy Mendicino and her committee for organizing the They Light Up Our Lives fundraiser again in 2013 and also to American Flags and Poles for displaying the Christmas tree for this event in their store window. Dona Cernus, Owner, CPC Ink Ava and Caden Gebczyk Ava and Caden Gebczyk (twins) celebrated and shared their 8 th birthday with the HSOV animals by asking their friends and family to give them gifts for the dogs and cats instead of for themselves. These sweet children (and their mother Michelle Steed Gebczyk) brought their gifts to the shelter on November 20 th and placed them under our Christmas tree, and it looked as though Santa Claus had delivered an early sleigh full of presents This is the third year that Ava and Caden have shared their birthdays with the HSOV! Their older brother, Jantzen, has also shared his birthday in the past as well!! Twisted Sisters Boutique, 197 Front Street, Marietta, Ohio hosted a unique event called Cutest Pet In The Mid-Ohio Valley for the benefit of the HSOV. Pet owners were invited to submit a photo of their pet to be displayed at the Boutique, and folks were invited to vote for their favorite by donating $1.00/vote. The winner was announced on November 11 th.. Annie received a $50 gift certificate from WeLovPets, and her owner (Jan Carey) received a $50 gift certificate from Twisted Sisters Boutique. And the HSOV received a donation in the amount of $620. Thank you Twisted Sisters Boutique Selena Wiggins Thank you to Sno Biz of Marietta for their generous $400 donation during the month of December 2013 A big THANK YOU to Girl Scout Troop 3249 in Belpre Ohio for their HSOV Project. Selena Wiggins and her family delivered a van load of donations for the shelter animals on November 30 th. Selena loves the HSOV kitties (and her family fosters many of them), so she asked that one of our shelter mascot kitties, Stripe, be in the photograph with her We want to say a special thank you to all of the individuals who bring donations to our shelter on a regular basis and everyone who is so willing/quick to respond when we send out a plea for needed items on our Facebook page. 10 Pumpkin (Aka Buffy) When Barbara Wells came to the HSOV in October 2012 to adopt a cat after her beloved 16-year old Charcoal had passed away, she really wasn t looking for another Buffy since she already had a cat with that name. But when Barb looked at all of the cats in our Jungle Room, it was a buff-colored one that we d named Buffy who won her heart. Our Buffy was a young mother cat who had been surrendered to the shelter with four tiny kittens. After her kittens were adopted, momma Buffy once again became a kitten herself.. playing, pushing her paws through the bars of her cage, and she loved to play with your hair. Barb adopted her that very day, and she was given a new name Pumpkin. Barb wrote a few days later that she has made me smile again. We would learn later that there must have been a special reason that this kitty was meant to go home with Barbara Wells.... Barb had been keeping in touch with our volunteer photographer and sending updates about Pumpkin, and it was obvious that this kitty was very much loved and had a purrfect home. She wrote in October 2013 that Pumpkin has been here a year now and is very spoiled. She does not look like the cat that we brought home from the shelter. On November 1, 2013 Barb shared a story about Pumpkin that surely must explain why this special cat was meant to be with her. Barbara is diabetic. On four separate occasions in the past year, Barb s sugar level has dropped low in the middle of the night.. and guess who wakens her up? You guessed right.. Pumpkin She licks Barb s face and pulls her hair until she gets up out of bed, and all four times it has been in the low 60 s or high 50 s. Barb says she has heard of dogs that alert their diabetic owners but has never heard of a cat doing this. Needless to say, this is just one of the reasons why Barb is so thankful that Pumpkin (aka Buffy) chose her. Buffy & Kittens Our Wish List! 13 During the month of December, the Humane Society of the Ohio Valley would like to once again remember and honor the pets that have brightened and enriched our lives. We will be placing a Christmas tree with strands of lights in the window at American Flags and Poles on Front Street. Living pets will be represented by colored lights and pets that have passed away will be remembered by white lights. In celebration of the 5 th year for this fundraiser, an anonymous donor has agreed to match the contribution amount! Animal lovers are invited to make a tax-deductible contribution in the amount of $5.00 per pet by symbolically buying a light in honor of their pets or their friends and family s pets during the month of December. This year the names of the pets as well as the names of the contributors will be published in a January edition of The Anchor.
