CASE NOTES SPCA of Texas: Jan Rees-Jones Animal Care Center Dallas, Texas Design Learned was an integral part of the design team which transformed a former industrial complex into a unique 39,000

5 CASE NOTES SPCA of Texas: Jan Rees-Jones Animal Care Center Dallas, Texas Design Learned was an integral part of the design team which transformed a former industrial complex into a unique 39,000 square foot shelter more than doubling the space of the previous SPCA facility. The Design Learned team worked with Dallas-based firm, Hinojosa, Architecture & Interiors on this innovative $8.5 million renovation project and designed the intricate mechanical and plumbing features for the new SPCA of Texas Jan Rees-Jones Animal Care Center in Dallas. DLI designed all of the mechanical and plumbing features for the new shelter, with its healthy environment and a fun retail-style atmosphere calculated to attract attention and increase the adoption rate for a humane organization which has previously found homes for nearly 4,000 displaced animals each year. 6 CASE NOTES Oldwick Animal Hospital Oldwick, New Jersey Design Learned Inc. collaborated with local architects and geothermal engineers from project conception through construction to design for LEED Certification this state-ofthe-art veterinary facility. The interior has three levels of lighting so that the staff and patients can adjust the wattage to the task at hand. This facility has been built for superior energy efficiency by utilizing a vast amount of natural light and geothermal technology. Learn more about the hospital at: oldwickanimalhospital.com Oldwick Animal Hospital 130 Oldwick Road Whitehouse Station, NJ Our mechanical design includes many zones which have dedicated heat pumps so that the geothermal system can deliver heating and cooling only where necessary. A separate system cleans, filters, and adds fresh air to ensure the building keeps the staff and patients healthy. The exterior of the hospital had to conform to strict local ordinances, so the DLI team employed soft lighting to maintain the residential feel necessary for the area.

7 CASE NOTES Bemidji Veterinary Hospital Bemidji, Minnesota Design learned, Inc. provided the mechanical, electrical, plumbing, noise control and indoor air quality engineering for the beautiful Bemidji Veterinary Hospital. The veterinary staff is equipped with digital radiology, underwater treadmill and cold laser therapy, oxygen caging and an on-site crematory. A fenced-in walking area for dogs adds to the accommodations. The13,500 square foot facility is a fully equipped hospital and boarding kennel with state-of-the-art technology and separated air zones to safely accommodate the Surgery, ICU, Isolation, Physical Therapy and Radiology areas. The heat zones use a geothermal system with quick delivery and a separate system cleans, filters, and adds fresh air to ensure the building keeps the staff and patients healthy. 11 CASE NOTES Paws and Claws Humane Society Rochester, Minnesota This state-of-the-art shelter, completed in July 2013, is located on nearly two acres and provides a spacious 7,800 square foot interior with all the amenities in which to house the dogs and cats including a vet room with all necessary animal care equipment and a separate area for grooming and baths. The shelter rooms and housing are designed to keep noise and stress to a minimum. Separate air exchange and HVAC systems are in place to keep disease spread to a minimum. High pressure power washers equipped with disease preventing disinfectants keep the space clean. Scott Learned is Board Certified, both as a Licensed Professional Mechanical Engineer (PE) and a Licensed Professional Electrical Engineer (PE) and is a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional (LEED AP). He is registered with the NCEES and holds Professional Engineering registrations throughout most of the United States. Scott is also Principal Member, NFPA Standards Committee 150.
