From our 100% volunteer-run days to today, we understand that progress is seeded at a grassroots level by concerned citizens, from those who simply love their own pets to policy leaders in positions to create community-wide change. Pet overpopulation, cruelty, neglect and irresponsible pet ownership are tough problems to find solutions to, making the need for public outreach and education that much more critical. A large percentage of neglect cases stem from uninformed pet owners, while Maui County animal regulations often go un-abided simply because citizens are not aware they exist. Educating the public about the importance of spay/neuter and providing permament homes for pets has the potential to greatly impact current and future populations. Making this kind of information more available to the public is preventative in nature; that is, we believe that with access to the right information, Maui s pet owners will make better informed decisions about their pet s well-being and the well-being of the animals in their community. Informing the public effectively nips many animal welfare issues in the bud, leading to healthier pets at home, better relationships with neighbors and less unwanted pets entering the shelter. So how can we make this happen? How can we increase awareness in a way that could not only benefit Maui s pets, but change our community s habits to create a wholly more humane Maui? As it is said in an old African proverb, It takes a village. With this in mind, the Maui Humane Society Ambassadors Program was founded this year to increase public access to vital information and encourage public involvement at the same time. 2 Message from our CEO By Jocelyn Bouchard, CAWA As 2012 winds down here at MHS we are getting ready for 2013 which will be our 60th anniversary. We are excited to celebrate 60 years of serving the community here on the island of Maui and have been spending some significant time evaluating our existing programs and services as well as developing new strategies for the years ahead. We have a brand new mission statement (see below) and look forward to working with and expanding our network of supporters in our ongoing efforts to save and improve the lives of Maui s animals. We recognize the importance of engaging people as part of the process to reaching our goals. We are not just about helping the animals we are also focused on creating a more compassionate and humane society just like our name suggests. We know that we would not be where we are today were it not for all of you; generous donors, valuable volunteers, loving adopters, community partners and responsible pet owners. These are just some of the ways we work together to save the lives of unwanted pets and to improve the lives of all animals in our community. So from all of here at the Maui Humane Society, thanks for all YOU do. We make a great team! Vision Statement: The Maui Humane Society envisions a time when our community embraces the human animal bond, no animals are homeless and all are treated with care, compassion and respect. Mission Statement: The Maui Humane Society s mission is: to save the lives of unwanted pets on the island of Maui, accepting all in need of shelter and working to humanely reduce the homeless pet population; to advocate for animals, rescue and protect them from suffering and promote responsible and caring treatment; and to educate WISH LIST our community, inspiring respect and compassion towards all animals. Jocelyn Bouchard, CAWA HAPPY ENDING Below are items that will greatly help us do more for the animals. Please consider sending an extra donation or gifting an item or two from the list below. After spending months (123 days) at the shelter he still felt like the last pick of the litter; that was until his new dad, Dan, came to visit him. Dan saw Rufus Pet of The Week story and picture in the newspaper and wanted to meet the little guy. The two clicked right away! Dan decided to adopt the Sharpei pup and give him a forever home. Rufus now lives in Lahaina, going to work with his dad and sleeping on a Temperpedic bed. His new dad said the first night Rufus fell asleep on the other side of the bed, but by morning, he woke up to he and Rufus sharing the pillow! Dan says that Rufus is housetrained, knows basic commands, is healthy and a great dog, despite spending most of his puppy months in the shelter. 3 What s Happenin at MHS? * Stay Tuned to our website for updates on Mobile Adoption Events, Canine Outing locations, and other upcoming events and promotions! or Facebook.com/MauiHumaneSociety We know our friends look forward each year to the Save The Date announcement of yet another outrageously creative theme for our annual FUR BALL fundraiser. So what s it going to be for 2013? A sequel to Wizard of Paws? Cleocatra Meets Toto, perhaps? Well, we ve come up with a truly UNusual idea this year something just the tiniest bit more subtle and UNderstated than past years. Something that will likely astound and UNderwhelm you. We are going to UNdo Fur Ball for That s right. No Fur Ball at all. UNbelievable? UNSAVE THE DATE! FUR BALL 2013 Our 2013 Pet Calendar are now on sale - Just $8 each! These calendars help us raise needed funds to continue our critical work; they ll help you stay organized in the coming year! Get yours today at the shelter or at MauiHumaneSociety.org! It s true. Fur Ball has been our most successful fundraising event EVER over the years, and we thank YOU for that! With our 60th anniversary on the horizon, however, we think it s the perfect time to forgo the big gala event and focus instead on the grassroots relationship-building that has served as our solid foundation these past six decades. So we re going to take a break from Fur Ball. Not forever. We ll bring Fur Ball back again with a bang! But for the next year or two we want to spend more time getting to know you through smaller, more personal events, and invite you to know more about us. We have lots to tell you, with so many programs--old and new--aimed at building a more humane community and saving the lives of unwanted pets on Maui. So please UNSAVE THE DATE and UNmark your calendar for Fur Ball But don t let this UN-event stop you from supporting MHS! You can still do so by making a donation, because although we are taking a break from Fur Ball, we never take a break from caring for Maui s animals. They are always in need of our help every day, every month, every year--and we are always there for them. Your donations make that possible and NEVER go UNappreciated. FLACA Now Lives: California HAPPY ENDING Mahalo for your ongoing support, The Maui Humane Society Team Flaca, named for the Spanish word thin, was found by a couple visiting from the mainland. She was skin and bones and losing her hair. Her finder said she had an instant connection with this cat and felt as if they had known each other forever and genuinely loved her. Unfortunately their stay on Maui was over so on the way to the airport they brought Flaca to the shelter, not sure if she could be saved. Throughout Flaca s month long stay at the shelter, MHS staff worked hard to nurse her back to health and made arrangements with her finders to fly her to the mainland once she was healthy enough. Flaca said Adios to a life on her own and Hola to her new forever family which includes two feline and one canine siblings. Her new parents said she is so loveable and even gives kisses. Flaca, who her new parents joke should be renamed Gorda, is now living a full and happy life, thanks to big hearts and second chances. 3

4 Ambassadors... Cultivating Compassion...continued from page 1 Are you an MHS Ambassador? Who are MHS Ambassadors? MHS Ambassadors are staff, donors, volunteers and concerned citizens, tasked with the enormous and noble responsibility of speaking on behalf of Maui s pets. Our volunteer Ambassadors receive special training that equips them with valuable information about Maui Humane Society and the services we provide. They can answer questions or point you in the right direction regarding anything from low cost spay/neuter options to reporting cruelty and neglect. Most importantly, MHS Ambassadors are your friends and neighbors: animal lovers who can t wait to share their personal knowledge and love of animals with you. By sharing humane values and ideas, these individuals prevent future acts of neglect and cruelty and create new communities of animal advocates. MHS Ambassadors go out into the community to promote the adoption of shelter pets, teach people how to be responsible pet owners, emphasize the importance of spaying and neutering pets, and encourage fellow community members to take an active role in preventing animal cruelty and neglect. They distribute vital materials like our Citizen s Guide to Animal Regulations, conduct shelter tours, and represent Maui Humane Society at events and fairs. Some ambassadors may also assist our Education and Outreach Coordinator by providing educational presentations to Pre-K and Kindergarten classes and providing support for humane education programs like Animal Camp and Junior Animal Advocates of Maui (JAAM) Club. It is clear that there are humane people among us (in fact, if you re reading this you re probably one of them). More importantly, it is humane people like you who have the ability to inspire friends and neighbors into real action. As South African activist Desmond Tutu once said, There is something in all of us that yearns to be good and true, and when we glimpse it in people, we applaud them for it. We long to be just a little like them. Through them we let the world s pain into our hearts, and we find compassion. When things go wrong or have been terribly wrong for some time, their inspiration reminds us of the tenderness for life that we can all feel. MHS Ambassador Program is an opportunity for all of us to extend the kindness in our hearts not only to our island s animals, but to our island s people. All you need is a desire to create a more animal-friendly Maui and we ll provide you with the rest of the training you ll need. If you would like to become an MHS Ambassador or learn more about the MHS Ambassador program, please contact our Education and Outreach Coordinator Josephine Tempongko at (808) ext.20 or Education@MauiHumaneSociety. org. Remember, we simply can t do it without you. MAHALO to the following donors for their generous financial support this past quarter: Akona Pet Aloha Recycling Animal Care Hospital Anita Pace and Harriet Carpenter BJB Charitable Trust Brent Sumja Cheryl Iseberg and Robert Nay Doris Lang and Gordon Firestein Doris O. Christenson Garmar Foundation George R. Pierce Hagar Family Foundation Hawaii Hotel and Lodging Association Hawaii Pacific Area Combined Federal Campaign Jamie Pagan Jon Ambrose Lorna Merriman Merck & Co, Inc Susanne DePaoli and Ernest Bentley Teresa D. Morris Travis Reed Wailea Community Association Wells Court Hui, LLC Wesley and Gayle Chun RAISIN Now Lives: Kihei, HI HAPPY ENDING 13 years old. Heartworm positive. Ruptured eye and inflammation. Skin Allergy. Severe Hairloss. Worn teeth. This was how Raisin s health record read. MHS vet staff gave her immediate attention after she was found in the shelter s overnight holding kennels with no information about where she had come from. Nicknamed Raisin, this petite bundle of fur quickly won staff hearts as she began her recovery in the surgery suite. A good samaritan who had brought an injured dog into the shelter noticed Raisin in the adjacent kennel and immediately fell in love with this little poi dog. In spite of her health related obstacles, Raisin s upbeat personality and playfulness shined through and once she was healthy enough to be adopted, she finally got to go forever-home with that same good samaritan a month later. An inspirational story of compassionate MHS staff and community, Raisin s rescue is certainly one worth celebrating! 4

5 Volunteer Spotlight: David Schoonover Volunteers at Maui Humane Society do so much more than most people realize. Take David Schoonover for instance, our volunteer photographer extraordinaire. David has been photographing MHS fundraisers, adoption events and much more for the past year. His professionalism and beautiful photos make him a pleasure to work with and on top of that, he s a really nice guy! Married to Tabitha Benner, another MHS volunteer, David has become an integral part of the Volunteer Team. David did the event photography at major MHS fundraisers Barktoberfest 2011 and Fur Ball He took portraits of pets and Santa Paws at MHS last December, and was even so generous as to donate the photo supplies. David has also generously donated many of his gorgeous photos of Maui for the new MHS website (coming soon!) and took photos of new kennels that were put in last year. He photographed some of the wonderful moments of Animal Camp, an education program for student s grades 2-5. He was even a guest speaker at Fall Animal Camp 2012, which was focused on pet photography; who better to share the joys and tricks of photography than a professional? Coming from a background at a fast-paced job as an editor on the mainland, David is punctual and communicative, and able to roll with the punches. Volunteer and Event Coordinator, Jennifer Louden, is continually grateful for his abilities and work ethic. It is wonderful to have such a reliable and valuable resource like David. His experience and knowledge of his field is awesome; I know that when I m working with David on something, it will be a job well done. David is already scheduled to do photography at many upcoming events, including Santa Paws again. Don t miss out on your chance to get a professional photograph of your pet, with the proceeds all going to the animals of MHS! David, we re so grateful to work with you, and hope you realize how valuable your support of MHS is Mahalo nui loa for your generosity and beautiful work! The Hana Spay-Neuter Initiative David doing event photography at the 2011 Barktoberfest - it sure is hard to get a photo of a photographer! We have great news! The Maui Humane Society and PetSmart Charities are teaming up for a project never before done on Maui. The project is called the Hana Spay-Neuter Initiative and will provide free spay and neuter services, as well as vaccines and microchips, to over 600 dogs and cats in the Hana district over the next two years. The MHS surgery team and volunteers hard at work! As you probably know, the Hana district of Maui is one of the poorest communities on the island. Being a rainforest and warm year-round, this area is a constant breeding ground for domestic animals and feral cats. Most of the residents in this area are poverty-stricken and cannot afford to feed their pets, let alone provide standard veterinary care or get them fixed. In addition, many do not have transportation to bring their animals in for the low-cost services we provide at our shelter. Hana has one of the highest concentrations of homeless pets on Maui. Compounded with financial constraints, the situation continues to degenerate, with no end in sight. Our field operations department consistently brings litters upon litters and stray adults in each week, many of whom are emaciated, diseased or both. We are thrilled to be able to provide them with these services they so desperately need. This will truly make a difference in the lives of these animals. Maui Humane Society will coordinate the effort by setting up a free spay/neuter clinic one weekend per month in Hana. The first two clinics were very successful with a total of 56 surgeries performed. When you consider that just one female cat and her offspring can produce tens of thousands of unwanted kittens, we want to shout a big HOORAY from the rooftops! Please call and make an appointment if you or someone you know has a pet in Hana that needs spayed or neutered and cannot afford it on their own. The number to call for an appointment is ext. 36. Our next clinics will take place : November December15-16 Donations to help us with the cost of this project are greatly appreciated! 5

At 11 years old Maximillion now has to start over from scratch. But that s ok because we just keep telling him that someone out there is looking for a superstar kitty like him! This sweet senior loves to greet vistors, snuggle with the other cats and play with the hose water (a morning shower is his favorite way to wake up!). This refined gentleman is a relaxed kind of fella that adores people and isn t afraid to show it! Anyone that adopts Max is getting a loyal friend. Will you be the one to give him his happy ending? Sinoe (Dog #94) - Are you looking for a fun-loving lady to have a blast with? If the answer is yes then look no further than this little cutie! Sinoe is an 8 month old Rottweiler Mix who always has a smile on her face, joy in her heart and a kiss for everyone she meets! This is the kind of girl that likes to get the most out of life. She already knows a few commands, walks well on a leash and does it all with an eager to please nature, you won t ever hear a complaint from her! Sinoe is very food motivated which will make teaching her news things a breeze and fun for everyone involved. She is sure to bring big smiles, big laughs and an even bigger love to your home.
