13 In Loving Memory of Tiffany Langteau Quotes from University of Wisconsin-River Falls Dairy Club Friends: There is nothing more Tiffany liked to talk about than cows, especially her Red & White updates that she would share with her River Falls friends. There were many long talks we had together in Ag Lounge about cows when we should have been studying. Her passion of the industry will be greatly missed. The many lives she touched with her contagious smile and positive attitude will always be something we remember. ~ Juli Cooper, UWRF Dairy Club Member and Close Friend This bubbly individual was full of spirit at all times of the day. There isn t a time I don t remember her without a smile on her face or a coffee mug in her hand. Tiffany and I became close friends when she changed her major to Ag Marketing and Communications. She was so excited to have classes with me and talk about cows. These have been the prime topics of our friendship for the last 3 years that I have known her. The one conversation we had that I remember the most was when she told me that her boyfriend compared her to the world renown one million dollar Red & White cow, Apple-Red. We spent many hours in the Ag Lounge making Sale Lot signs, talking about cows, bulls, genomics (not a happy topic to discuss) and how she was hoping to market the dairy industry, owning her own coffee shop, or becoming the next Cybil Fisher. I will miss her smile and laugh and talking cows and working with you at the Red & White booth at World Dairy Expo this year. I hope to follow in your footsteps down my own tanbark trail to pursue our dreams of marketing the dairy industry. ~ Kayla Wright, 2012 RWDCA Summer Intern and UWRF Dairy Club Member and Friend Dear friend, We first met in the show ring as competitors both in showmanship, placing classes and dairy judging. You always seemed to beat me... From here our friendship grew. I will not forget you munching on cookie crisps as your supper during Dairy Club's Haunted Pavilion or me rescuing your FBI mug, numerous times, from being M.I.A. for your needed morning coffee. Or how hyper you could get with your mom's rationed Hershey Kisses. And we cannot forget your "I love my cows" video. Thanks for bringing along the latest magazine just for me or hand delivering me a warm meal at the fair because you knew "someone needed to take care of me." Today I will have chocolate in your honor and say hi to the cows for you. I will now have to get my own copy of The Tanbark without having you to recite Tiffany Langteau was an inspiration to many. She had a smile that was contagious, a heart of gold and an enormous desire for dairy cattle. She represented the Red & White Dairy Cattle Association last summer as the 2011 summer intern and was the reason I applied for the position. She was also interested in the new RWDCA Assistant Manager position. Tiffany was my leader and motivator to pursue my dreams of marketing in the dairy industry and to increase my current herd of Red & White cattle. She was an inspiration for many areas in the dairy industry from the cows themselves to marketing them through publications, and more importantly corresponding with others about her passion for the cows. Tiffany could talk your ear off about her view points of cattle, her future dreams of marketing the dairy industry and was always willing to lend a hand when projects needed to be accomplished. She aided in my passion of dairy cattle and was always there for advice when designing advertisements or talking about new bulls and champion cows. This bubbly individual set prime examples to the members of the River Falls Dairy Club and Red & White breeders far and wide. I, along with her large family in the River Falls Dairy Club will miss that contagious smile, her pink barn-duty attire, drinking coffee with her and the hours on end conversations about a topic we all loved most-cows. The dairy industry lost a great advocate, but her tanbark trail that she left behind will never be forgotten. Kayla Wright, 2012 RWDCA Summer Intern 13 the book by heart. I will have to rely on The Red Bloodlines more often to stay up-to-date on what is new in Red genetics. For someone who is my younger sister at heart, your legacy as the next Cybil will always be with me. Everyone that had the honor to know Tiffany Langteau, take a moment to reflect on the memories, her love for the dairy cow especially her Reds and have a chocolate Hershey Kiss just for her. The dairy industry has had a huge loss, but of someone that will not be lost, but held with us in memory and legacy. I hope the young Cybil has taken your picture as it is now a picture of rarity. Tiffany we will meet again someday, but until then I may need your helpful guidance from time to time. ~ Joey Ploeckelman, UWRF Dairy Club Member and Friend Tiffany was always the one that could make me smile, the many nights we spent talking about her dreams of a bed and breakfast with a photo studio upstairs was nothing less than a small ambition that she had to conquer the world and become the next Cybil Fisher. ~ Labecca Johnson, UWRF Dairy Club Member and Friend I remember clipping cows with her for Ag Tech and Falcon Ag Challenge where we spent more time talking about who were the hot sires and who she could flush her cows to than actually clipping! She made me feel welcome and made me want to get involved in dairy club early in my freshman year! She also would never shy in trying to break the trouble cow either, even though she was the smallest one there! ~ Eric Zwiefellofer, UWRF Dairy Club Member and Friend Quotes from the Dairy Industry: Our thoughts, prayers and deepest sympathy goes out to the family and friends of our 2011 Summer Intern, Tiffany Langteau. She truly inspired and encouraged each and every life she touched and our Association was blessed with her talents. She shared her passion of the dairy industry and the Red & White cow with everyone she met! Her contagious smile and positive attitude will be remembered always! ~ Stephanie Stout, RWDCA The industry lost an incredible young woman in Tiffany Langteau, our 2012 dairy performance programs intern. Tiffany was a bright and energetic girl that had a tremendous future ahead of her, and her passion and drive will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family in this difficult time. ~ ABS Global

24 March 30&31, 2012, Holiday Inn, Milwaukee WI President Morrill opened the meeting at 12:00pm with the introduction of all Directors and guests present. Directors present were President, Dr. Kim Morrill, Vice President Mike Brown, Secretary Dr. Kim Olson, Tim Baumgartner, Jennifer Hill, Mark Olbrich, and Mary Etta Lenkaitis; arriving later was Jake Skinner, and not present was Matt Lawrence. Guests present were Mr. & Mrs. Darren Carlstrom, Jerry Good and John Schmitz, and staff members Stephanie Stout and Elmo Wendorf. First item on the agenda was the acceptance of the July Board Minutes, Annual Meeting Minutes and the December Board meeting minutes, Mary Etta moved to accept all three sets of minutes as presented, with Tim second the motion, the motion carried. Treasurer's Report was postponed until the Treasurer; Jake Skinner will be present at the meeting. The Morning Executive Committee had nothing to report to the Board of Directors. The 50th Anniversary Committee reported to the Board of Directors. They re changing the location for the 50th Annual Convention from Lake Geneva to the Elkhorn area primarily due to the cost of Hotel rooms being much greater. Moving the location to Elkhorn will make the guests of the Convention much closer to the fairgrounds where the Show, Sale and Annual Meeting would all be taking place. By July, the Committee wants to start looking for a Sale Manager for the 50th Anniversary Sale. The 50th Anniversary Committee would once again like to auction off the first page of the Leading Ladies Magazine and put the proceeds towards the National Convention. Motion was made By Tim and second by Mike, to accept the report, motion passed. Awards Committee Report was presented by President Kim Morrill on behalf of Patty Hurtgen. There was a motion by Mary Etta and second by Jen Hill to pay a partial stipend for the two individuals to attend the next class of YDLI. After some discussion, the motion was amended to make the stipend a total of $ dollars per year total; $ per attendee for year one and again $500.00/attendee for year two. The motion passed, the rest of the report was approved as printed. Classification Committee Chairman, Darren Carlstrom, presented the Committees report; there was discussion on the issue of classification and the tremendous delay in getting information back to the herds that have been classified. Everyone present was in agreement that the process must be completed and information added to our herd book. The Committee had recommended that we stay with the stickers. The Board had discussions with the Committee Chairman after his report about stickers versus stamps. It was moved by Jen and second by Tim to go back to stamping the papers on the farm after the classification was completed, the motion carried. It was then moved by Tim and second by Jen that this would be in place by July , motion passed. After a discussion on Pedigrees, it was moved by Tim and second by Kim Olson to provide free pedigrees for those herds that have scored while the system was down. Motion passed Junior Committee Report, Presented by Kim Morrill, Presentation on the Alternate Lead person was discussed, there were four options presented to the Board. 1. Do away with the program, 2. Do not change the program, 3. Only allow at Premier Junior Show, 4. Add school as an excused reason, The Junior must submit a note on School letterhead 24 hrs. Prior to the show, this note must contain the School address, a contact phone number and it must be signed by the Principal. Moved by Mary Etta and second by Kim Olson not to change the present lead person rules as printed by the RWDCA, the motion passed. The Junior Committee presented to the Board of Directors a one year lease program for $15.00 per year, per person or a lifetime lease of $45.00 per person. Tim moved to accept and Mike had second it and the proposal passed. Nomination Committee report: As of March 30th, the Association has four candidates to run for the Board of Directors, The candidate names presented were: Lisa Gibson, Sam Appleby, Yvonne Preder, and Gary Janssen. Dana Erway withdrew his name from the running as a candidate because he had concerns of how it would look if he was elected having three directors from one state on the board at one time. Scholarship Report, was approved as presented. Show Committee report was moved to Saturday morning when Matt Lawrence would be present to lead the discussion. Registration Committee Report: There was no report presented; but the Board was told that for this year, the number of herds participating in the Red Express program was down. USLGE report was given by Mike Brown. Reports for the trips to Brazil, Australia and Italy have been completed; and the committee reports have been submitted. Since the International Red Cow Conference was our last International USLGE project in the budget year, the board was informed that it had been cancelled for this year with a full money refund, and it is not, at present, rescheduled. Mike proposed to the Board to take the $ dollars that is currently scheduled for France in BOARD MEETING 24 July 2012, and use it for 2012 National Convention scheduled in Canada for August This does fall into the budget year for for USLGE. Mike suggested that anyone going on one of the USLGE trade missions be reimbursed within 30 days of completion of their report and having submitted their expenses to the office, and not wait for the USLGE payments back to the Association. Mary Etta moved and Tim had second this motion and the motion passed with the effective date of March It was suggested that all foreign transactions would be done by Credit Card Payment, making all transactions go smoothly and it is easier to prove in a Government audit. There was some discussion about setting up a reserve fund for USLGE as we have for the junior fund but this was sent back to Committee for further discussion. Visionary Committee Report: there was none presented. Finance Report: Jake having arrived late due to flight delays requested that this report would be given in the morning. After the break, the Executive Committee presented handouts on Insinc to the board and went through all the proposals that were presented by Holstein USA. The Board then went into closed session to do employee evaluation for Stephanie Stout. There was a discussion on an individual heifer that was entered but not allowed to show at Madison; It was sent back to committee to create a statement that would cover black on a red animal, stating that these animals would not be eligible to show. Tim Moved and Dr. Kim Olson second and the motion passed. The rest of the report was passed as presented. Director Reimbursement Proposal was presented. As the RWDCA moves forward we need to recognize proper protocol of covering board members expenses when they are asked to travel and conduct the business of the association. This is an attempt to better compensate director dedication to the association as well as encourage participation from across the country. The following is proposed as compensation for Board of Directors of the RWDCA 1. Airline tickets are paid in full (with a max of $ per meeting) 2. Hotel rooms are paid in full(with a max of $100.00/night) 3. If traveling by car then federal mileage rate apply. 4. If a rental car is needed they will be paid in full (with a max of $250.00/ meeting) 5. Meals are to be paid for by the director. Reimbursement can be made by either direct payment to the director or by credit to their account. Mike moved and Tim second the proposal passed. old business It was moved by Jen and second by Mary Etta to do away with the present incentive program set up for Stephanie. Motion passed. 30 Polled Genetics Roundtable Discussion In our annual Sire Issue, we have placed a stong focus on polled genetics. We would like to share the breeder perspective with our readers. Participating in our Polled Genetics Roundtable Discussion are John Boschma, Wisconsin, Brian Crull, Wisconsin, Nate Faus, New York, Felix LeMay, Quebec, Canada, Ryan Nigh, Wisconsin and Becky Carlsen, Pennsylvania. We would like to thank our participants for sharing their experiences and future plans with their polled Red & White genetics. Brian Crull, Wisconsin Briar Holsteins is a family run dairy located near Monroe, Wisconsin with 90 cows total with 80 milking and 100 heifers. Slightly over 50% of the cows are Red & White with the balance all being Red carriers with the exception of one or two cows. All of the daily workload is done by our four youngest children-justin, Brandon, Jessica and Briana. Our two older daughters, Stephanie and Kelsey also help some when their schedule allows. Our cows are housed in a 40 tie-stall barn and a bedded pack barn. Heifers are started in hutches, then loose housing and pasture. Felix LeMay, Quebec, Canada The Ferme du Doc, Inc. started to operate a small herd of 18 cows in Today, it is 115 cows milking with an average of 12,500kg of milk. The total herd consists of about 250 head. John Boschma, Wisconsin Bosside Holsteins is in Colby, Wisconsin. We sold our 200 cow freestall dairy and built new facilities; 70 tiestalls, some pens and a lean-to on the side for calves. Nate Faus, New York We have a family farm called Rollen N s Dairy owned by my parents, Allen & Carol Faus. They purchased the farm in I am the herd manager and own some of the cows. We milk 90 cows. Over 90% of the milking cows are red and around 25% are polled. We are located in central New York in the Finger Lakes area. Ryan Nigh, Wisconsin I farm with my dad and uncle. At Lirr Farm, we milk 80 Registered Holsteins and have an 80 cow beef recipient herd. We have 900 acres of cropland. Becky Carlsen, Pennsylvania My husband, Conrad, and I have been dairy farmers since We operate a small family farm with the help of our children, Kristin Carlsen Shores, Tory, and Kelsey. We own about 180 acres in Bradford County in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Our barn is an older tie-stall with room for 28 head, and an attached free-stall for additional milking cows and heifers. Calves are raised in individual wire pens in a lean-to off of our barn. We feed a conservative ration of dry hay and baleage grown on our farm, in addition to purchased grain. All the animals in our herd are Red or RC, with the exception of a few recent purchases and recipients. Over the years, we have had many requests for show-quality Red and Whites, so we began a flush program to merchandise a few high-type females every year for additional income. In early 2011, we made a decision to do genomic testing on our entire herd. Although money was tight, we felt an investment in our unique genetics was more likely to offer a return than renovating our facilities. We used the results to select superior females to breed or flush, and help correctively mate the animals we bred. Genomic testing was instrumental in improving our breeding program, resulting in numerous high-tpi calves, including Frith-jof Colt Ruby PP-Red, GTPI +2056, born this April. In June of 2011 we were given an opportunity to sell our milking herd. We chose to do so, as the price was right and we needed to cut back. Many later went on to new homes in Canada. Since then, we have sold animals in sales after they have freshened, or sold an occasional calf at a sale. We continue to work on our genetics, especially focusing on high-genomic and polled bloodlines. 1. Explain your involvement in polled genetics. How did you get involved in polled genetics? How many years and how many polled milking? Boschma: We have visited Burket Falls in Pennsylvania several times and liked the idea of using polled bulls. When Lawn Boy P became available, we used him right away. Crull: I would say my involvement in polled genetics started more by accident than from planning when we purchased some Aggravation Hangover P-Red semen about 8 years ago. Our interest in polled genetics changed in 2009 with the purchase of Ri-Val-Re LB Sweety-P- Red at the National Red & White Convention. After talking with a polled breeder at the convention who was very enthusiastic about polled cattle, I decided to use only polled bulls from that point on. We now use a horned bull on some of our polled daughters to incorporate different bloodlines, but our goal is to become 100% polled. Faus: Our involvement in polled genetics originated from using polled bulls. Our original polled cows were sired mostly by Burket-Falls bulls over 15 years ago. A few years ago we became serious about polled breeding and since then about 80-90% of the bulls we use have been polled. We are really seeing the results of our efforts with many of our first calf heifers being polled. We are now milking about 25 polled cows. The polled results compound because polled is coming from within our herd. We are now able to use horned bulls and still get polled offspring. Every mating we do has a 50% (polled x horned), 75% (polled x polled), or 100% (homozygous polled sire or dam) chance of being polled. About 2 years ago, we along with the help of a couple partners, invested in our first high genomic polled Red heifer. Her name is Tiger- Lily Dst Liz-P-Red. She is a full sister to Ladd P. She was at the time the #1 polled and #1 Red heifer of the breed. Liz s offspring are now some of the highest polled heifers. We have since invested in a few more high genomic polled heifers from great families. 30 (continued on page 31)

31 Polled Genetics Roundtable Discussion (continued from page 30) Nigh: I got involved in polled with the purchase of Ri-Val-Re Special-P- Red. She was a Lawn Boy P from the Derrwyn Miss Special family and she happened to be polled. After purchasing her it got me to thinking seriously about polled. Ever since then I have been breeding for polled. She is the dam of Lirr Special Effect-P-Red and Lirr Dual-PP-Red both available through DairyBullsOnline. Carlsen: My father-in-law, Frithjof Carlsen, purchased our farm as a retirement project in He purchased our first polled bull, Hickorymea Sungold P-Red, from Eddy Johnson in He followed that by purchasing polled bulls four more times from a variety of breeders. We used them as herd bulls (back-to-back), before beginning to use our own home-bred bulls. Our first polled calves were born in At the time we sold our milking herd, almost a dozen cows were polled, and we had already sold many polled cows and bulls over the years leading up to that. Sires of these polled cows included: Sabre, September Storm, Indianhead Revenge, Advent, and Lawn Boy P, to name the most recent ones. Many cows sold on service to, or bred to, polled bulls. We have marketed 6 additional cows over the last year that were polled, sired by MD-Valleyvue Christian, Lawn Boy P, Talent, Redlou, and Paul P. 2. What do you have for milking polled daughters? Who are your polled heifers sired by? Boschma: From the 40 we milk now, 2 heifers are polled; one by Lawn Boy is a bull dam and has a Red polled Larson at Semex. The other one we milk is by a Lawn Boy P son. Our polled heifers are by Burket- Falls Premium PP-Red and Burket-Falls Logo PP-Red. Crull: We now have 10 polled cows milking. Of our polled cows, three are by Golden-Oaks Rocco P-Red, two are by Aggravation Lawn Boy P-Red, two are by West Port Arron Doon Mitey P-RC, one by Aggravation Hangover P-Red, one by Gen-I-Beq Sungod-Red and one by Mer-Gold Adv Midas-Red. We now have over 40 polled heifers on the ground with over 40 ET pregnancies due that could either be heterozygous or homozygous polled calves. Sires of the older heifers include: West Port Arron Doon Mitey P-RC, Arron Doon West Port Magna P-RC, Deslacs Illegal P-Red, Ri-Val-Re Ruby P-Red and Sandy Valley Colt P-Red-TW. Our younger heifers are sired by: Clerinda Balti P-Red, Estmer Melvin P-Red, Dudoc Toubib P-RC, Hickorymea Rematch P- Red-TW, Hickorymea Remake P-Red-TW, Hunsberger Alchemy and Northwind-KC Leader P-Red. We are also flushing polled Red carrier daughters of Observer, Shadow Boxer and Destry with a Gold Chip daughter that will be flushed later this year, all of which have no Lawn Boy in their pedigrees. Faus: We have polled milking daughters sired by Lawn Boy, Ducky, Torino, Rocco, Platte, Wunder, Fortify, Future, Raspberry, Jarah, and SU- P. Our polled heifers are sired by Lawn Boy, Shotzy, Premium, Logo, Dominant, Dazzler, Lypoll, Colt, Balti, Proxy, and Illegal. We also have several polled heifers sired by horned bulls. LeMay: We are currently milking polled cows from Toystory, Lawn Boy P, Toubib P, Elixir P, Contagieux P (Lawn Boy x September Storm), Total P, Tristan P, Bear P, Yen P, Icicle P. The polled heifers are sired by Man-O-Man, Sudan, Bolton, Mr Burns, Braxton, Magna P, Epithelium P, Jake and a few farm bulls. Nigh: Currently I am not milking any polled animals. But, I have numerous polled heifers. They are sired by Bear-P, Beacon, Man-O-Man, Colt-P, Icicle-P, Magna-P and Mitey-P with homozygous Icicle P, Bear P, and Mitey P daughters. Carlsen: We are currently milking two polled cows: Frith-jof Absolute Rio-P-ET, a VG-87 two year old Absolute (the dam of Ruby PP-Red), and a VG-86 three year old Debonair. Polled heifers and calves we have are sired by Durham-Red, Lawn Boy P, Colt P, and Larson. 3. What Polled sires are you currently using in your herd? Boschma: Polled bulls we use lately: Ladd P-Red, Balti P-Red and Pine-Tree Relief P-RC. Crull: We are currently using: Pine-Tree Relief P-RC, Our-Favorite Lou P-Red, April-Day Voodoo P-RC, Hickorymea Parker P, Venture Proxy PP-Red and occasionally some horned bulls when flushing a polled cow or heifer to create different bloodlines. 31 Faus: We are currently using Colt, Dancer, Dolo, Effect, Ladd, Motive, Proxy, Relief, Rematch, and Satchel. LeMay: I am working on polled as I worked on Red.using polled bulls on horned cows and best Holstein bulls on polled cows. About 40% of the calves for the next year could be born polled. So I am using most of the polled bulls available such as Earnhardt P, Ladd P, Colt P, Epiploon P, Balti P, Magna P, but I am waiting polled on offsprings of bulls like Numero Uno, McCutchen, Ransom, Highway, Lexor, etc. Nigh: Lirr Special Effect-P, Lirr Dual-PP, Ladd P and Earnhardt P. Carlsen: We have embryos or calves coming in the next year sired by Ladd P-Red, Colt P-Red, Parker P, Proxy PP-Red (6 from one flush), and are flushing currently to Erbcrest Satchel P. Earnhart P is planned for a future mating, as is Colt 45. A number of these are potentially Homozygous Polled (PP) calves. In addition, we have possibilities for polled calves out of Redburst, Alchemy, and Lithium. 4. In your perspective, why do you feel polled is important? Boschma: The polled gene just adds something extra to an animal. Our customers that buy clean up bulls from us are now asking for a polled bull. Crull: I believe polled will affect cattle breeders here in the US sooner than many breeders realize. In Europe, there is already a push to stop dehorning and I believe it will affect the demand for polled cattle even more in the very near future. I enjoy having polled animals for the simple fact that I don t have the job of dehorning my animals or to pay someone to do it. The polled animals do not lose any growth or need extra labor to perform a job that no one enjoys doing. Faus: Polled is important to us because of the labor savings and animal welfare. We also do it because of the added value of the offspring and because it s fun to have something unique. LeMay: Really simple: this gene means something! Less work, less bad work! Better in all ways for the calves. Nigh: I feel it is a very important way for the dairy industry to be proactive on a very important animal welfare issue. The beef industry has already adopted it and promotes increased performance from polled animals because of the stress of dehorning. Carlsen: As far as we are concerned, polled is a positive health trait that enhances the value of a cow or bull. About a year ago, we began hearing stories about proposed legislation in Europe to make dehorning calves more humane. This was reported to lead to increased interest in using polled sires to avoid dehorning, thus saving time and money in addition to avoiding negative publicity. And dehorning is an unpleasant job no one likes to do anyway! In today s competitive market, no one can afford to project such a negative image linked to their product, nor can they afford to pay for the labor, vet costs, and set-backs associated with dehorning. It is a trait that adds value to a cow, a bull, or a mating in a world that is dominated by commercial dairy operations. And if these types of laws pass in Europe, it s only a matter of time before they are proposed in the US. 5. What do you see as the future for polled? Boschma: If a breeder can come up with a Red polled bull with high enough numbers and from a well known and respected cow family, there will be a great future for that bull. Crull: I think the future growth in numbers for polled cattle of all breeds will accelerate in the near future. I think the breeders that already have polled animals will have an excellent market for their breeding stock. Faus: I believe the future of the Holstein breed is polled. In the last few years polled has been getting much more attention. It is getting established in many great cow families. The price of high end polled females is proof of the value and future of polled. In the future I believe horned heifers will be considered inferior and it will be very difficult to market semen from horned bulls. LeMay: Same as it did for beef cattle: one day, it will become the norm. Nigh: I think that polled with keep gaining momentum and eventually become the norm and that horned cattle will be viewed as having an undesirable recessive gene. This change needs to happen carefully to control inbreeding and to keep the Holstein breed as diverse as possible. (continued on page 32)

32 Polled Genetics Roundtable Discussion (continued from page 31) Carlsen: Without a doubt, polled dairy cows and bulls will continue to increase in popularity and variety. Anyone that doesn t use polled genetics in their breeding program will miss an opportunity to enhance the value of their animals and add profit to their bottom line. They may also miss the opportunity to sell quality polled animals at substantial prices, due to the current limited availability of these genetics. In the future, it may actually be considered to be an undesirable recessive for an animal to be horned. Don t be left behind! 6. What enhancements would you like to see on polled genetics? Boschma: We could use a bit more variety different bloodlines and cow families. Crull: I would like to see more of a selection in bloodlines for Red & White polled animals. Lawn Boy P did so much to introduce the polled gene in herds that never had a polled animal, but now we need more outcross sires to use on all of the polled Lawn Boy P daughters and grand-daughters. Faus: I would like to see more polled bulls that compete closely with the very best horned bulls. More high genomic homozygous polled bulls will be very valuable to make more polled heifers. Because the genetic base for polled genetics is somewhat limited I would also like to see more outcross polled bulls. LeMay: The genetics! I want more, more, more! More bulls available, more variability in the pedigrees, more choices! Nigh: More outcross polled genetics and more homozygous polled genetics available for commercial dairyman. There are always areas for improvement in cattle genetics as we try to keep up with changing demands of our customers. Carlsen: As with all dairy genetics, better milk production and higher components add a lot to the bottom line. Lower SCS, better Type, and especially higher DPR are also important. But it will be of utmost importance to broaden the genetic pedigrees of polled animals, away from dominant bull mothers and dominant sires like Lawn Boy P and his daughters and sons, for maximum TPI development. Lawn Boy P has been an influential bull for polled and Red and White breeders that I have used and loved, too, but using a tool like Holstein USA s inbreeding calculator can help sort out how much Lawn Boy P is too much in a pedigree! We also need to attempt to breed for more Homozygous polled (PP) offspring. These animals offer the greatest potential for high-genomic matings that will make a more rapid improvement in the quality of polled service sires available to the general population of cows and heifers. You can breed a PP heifer to bulls on the top TPI list, and ALL the resulting offspring will be polled, resulting in a much better variety of polled bloodlines to select from. A high-tpi PP bull will have an enormous value, and a positive impact on the Holstein breed sometime in the near future. 7. What market do you see for your polled bulls after 2013? Boschma: Next year will make it easier to market and will create new opportunities. With already new AI companies and more competition, it will keep everybody sharp! Crull: I think the market for unique pedigreed polled bulls will be a great asset to polled breeders because the demand for polled semen is already being seen in AI organizations today. Faus: With the freedom to genomic test our own bulls we will be able to make fair contracts with bull studs knowing exactly what the bull is that we are working with. We have some good polled animals we are working with that will produce some interesting high polled and homozygous polled bulls. We hope they will be a benefit to many breeders polled programs. LeMay: I don t think 2013 will change anything for polled bulls. The wave has already started. Depending on what will turn out from this early buzz, we will see the wave growing (rapidly or slowly?) but it will keep growing 2013 may be a turning point for marketing bull semen, but it will be the same for Red & White, Polled or simple Holstein bulls Nigh: The option to genomically test males before signing a contract should add value to the elite bulls. I am hopeful that it will be value 32 added for those bulls not quite high enough for major A.I. organizations. Carlsen: This is something that is rather difficult for me to speculate on. We have decided to keep all our polled bulls and do testing on them as we are able. We have a yearling Brunner Mr Top son and a couple Colt P sons to work with already. As with any bull, the value of the bull or his semen will depend on his GTPI being competitive with other polled bulls and other young sires in general. The GTPI of polled young sires will need to be comparable with the GTPI of the top Holstein young sires in the very near future. Colt P is sure to be influential, as I am seeing many beautiful daughters that also have genomics above PA, and many high-tpi sons as well. But an outcross pedigree will greatly enhance the marketability of a polled sire or dam as well. Without a doubt, polled bulls will increase in marketability and value, especially since supply will lag behind demand for at least a while. But the Big Players have seen this opportunity and are already getting involved in polled genetics very extensively, so the Little Guy will have the best opportunity if they breed for polled right now. 8. Any final thoughts on polled Red & White genetics? Boschma: By adding polled is not going to be enough. We will need to make the right mating, have the right cow families and the right sire stack to breed a great Red & White. Crull: Red & White breeders have always been progressive and adding the polled gene to Red & Whites has given the breeders an "edge" on what will be in demand in the future. As a breeder, I've noticed the prices being paid for polled Red and Red Carrier heifers that have sold recently and I believe that the future looks bright for polled Red & Whites. Faus: We have always been into doing things different and unique so it came naturally for us to get into polled Red & White Holsteins. About 75% of our calves are now polled and some are homozygous polled. We do not regret in any way using some unpopular bulls to achieve our goals. For anyone that s considering using some polled bulls in their herd I say, Do it! Try using all polled bulls for awhile or go buy some good polled animals. When it comes time to dehorn a group of heifers and you can skip half of them you will be so glad you did! LeMay: It is fun to see really often the polled gene going with the red coat gene Breeders who are looking for different cattle or looking for a niche market saw both in Red & White and polled a way to boost the marketability of their cattle. Nigh: I think that the Red & White breeders are doing a great job in being proactive by being some of the first people to adopt polled. Carlsen: Polled Red and White genetics are about to make a huge impact on the entire Holstein breed. Do yourself a favor and get in on the action; don t fall behind! Do some genomic testing on your herd. Pick a young, high-genomic heifer and one of your favorite cows, and use genomics and type linears to make a complimentary polled mating or two to use on them. Do a flush to increase your chances of getting several polled calves to work with. There are a lot of good polled sires out there, and more coming all the time. If I could choose two bulls of equal TPI, and one of them was polled and the other horned, I would choose polled! What about you? All breeds have some polled (naturally hornless) cattle. A number of Red & White breeders have shown a special interest in developing polled cattle. A large number of polled sires, both Red and Red carrier, are currently available. The gene for polled is a single, dominant gene (P) and the gene for horned is a single recessive gene (h), as shown in the diagrams. This makes the polled factor much easier to breed for than red color, with 50% of the calves being polled in the first generation when a polled sire is used. An animal with two polled genes is known as TRUE POLLED or homozygous polled and all the offspring of such an animal will be polled. Most polled animals, including most sires with semen available, have one polled gene and one horned gene. Lawn Boy P-Red at Select Sires is a true polled sire. 100% of his offspring will be polled, diagram 1. A breeder who uses a polled sire in his herd of horned cattle will be making the mating shown in diagram 2. A breeder who is developing polled cattle will often make the mating shown in diagram 5. 35 AI Profile - Foundation Sires by Kayla Wright, RWDCA Intern History of Foundation Sires Foundation Sires is an international organization pertaining to elite bulls with deep pedigrees to sire daughters around the world. This bull stud began their operation in 1999, consisting of only one employee, a few salesman and only one bull to market within the industry. Such changes consisted of the transition from an in-home office to the new headquarters that is also the main barn facility. In addition to the new building, the organization has expanded to what has been nicknamed the sister organization, Foundation Genetics. Both organizations have expanded to 10 office employees and 21 salesmen. Corresponding with these two organizations is the addition of a Western Canadian partner. This partner is Bouchard Livestock with the help of other international distributors in over 20 countries. Marketing the Bulls Foundation s focus has always been on deep cow families. Our bull mothers are cows that produce and reproduce. In fact, if you re looking for longevity, our bull dams define it! were the words from Foundation Sires regarding their breeding philosophy for dairy producers worldwide. Brian Coghlin, President and founder of Foundations Sires and Genetics has a key sense in understanding dairy cattle and how to promote them to the industry. Coghlin has been a farmer and classifier for 15 years when he made a slight career change when he decided to promote deep cow families. The purpose behind Foundation Sires is to bring back good cow sense into the bull selection. This is a private corporation with shareholders in Canada and the United States. These shareholders, with the exception of President Coghlin, milk and manage their own herd of cows every day. The advantage of this is that these shareholders are able to bring in current view points at the farm level, creating the image of a producer driven movement. There are currently 30 shareholders in Canada. Red Breeds Foundation Sires is home to only a few elite Red and Red Carrier bulls. Fradon Redliner was one red bull that has made a large impact both in the stud and for breeders worldwide. In addition to Redliner, some other red bulls that call Foundation Sires home are Morsan Red Eye, Morsan Afterburn, Rosedale Blackjack-RC and Fieldhouse Redlou. Management Protocols By having these shareholders hailing from both large commercial herds to high profile show herds gives the opportunities to see both view points of dairy operations. With these farms focusing on different traits, there are two that both operations seek highly in; longevity and fertility. These traits are a priority according to the Foundation Sires Sire Selection Committee when they are seeking a bull or cow families. Their sire selection has paid off with their precise priority in the selection. Foundation Sires quoted, We are also extremely proud of the conception rates breeders have achieved with our sires, so if you re looking for high fertility bulls that combine high production, high components and extreme type with the deepest cow families in the breed, look no further than Foundation Sires! Brian was the one who went out into the industry to create this organization before it was even built. He traveled and listened to many breeders concerns and dissatisfaction with the young sires that were being promoted from bull studs. Brian went in the direction of common sense breeding and deep cow families rather than simply index. More data is kept within the operation and is also sent to the Canadian Dairy Network (CDN) to be tested and certified as Canadian Proven. Expanding In 2004, the company had the thought of building the sister company Foundation Genetics. This site is able to house the bulls and collect semen on site. They have also expanded their collection times from the previous weekly routines of in-house collection, to incorporating an on-farm collection service. This service allows farmers to have their bulls collected while still having the opportunity to use them for their own on-farm needs. Then in 2005 Foundation Genetics began working the CFIA. Foundation Genetics wanted to become an accredited semen receiving center. This way the company would be given the opportunity to import orders directly from the international clients to do business with them. This reality became set-instone on September 2, 2005 when the doors opened to North American s newest state-of-the-art custom collection and bull housing facility. Today at Foundation Currently, Foundation is housing approximately 40 bulls on site but with the addition in 2009 of the North Complex, they can now house 170 bulls each in individual pens. Not only does Foundation Sires house dairy bulls, but also welcome in beef breeds as well. Foundation Sires quoted, We welcome all beef and dairy cattle producers with the desire to strengthen their herd s genetics, not only for the present but also for the future generations to come. 36 Management Perspectives Polled genetics: As the stakes get bigger, the spread grows wider by Ed Peck The following article is an editorial perspective by the author. There is no doubt the rapid genetic advancements of breeding polled dairy cattle are not only here to stay, but it is also growing at an incredible pace. Polled heifers are some of the most sought after individuals in sales, embryo export contracts and domestic bull contracts. What lies ahead for this breeding focus? There are many ways to look at it, depending on which sub-segment you consider. Earlier Pioneers: Long-time commitment finally paying off for now. A small handful of breeders saw a future in polled dairy cattle, even when it was a challenging, up-hill battle to breed polled cattle without sacrificing genetic progress. For decades, they remained true to their vision, marketed intensely even when the majority of the industry didn t put a high value in what they had to offer. Herds such as Burket-Falls, Aggravation, Hickorymea and a few others have received recognition for their tenacity in breeding polled Red & White cattle, but the true depth of deserving accolades may now never be great enough to honor them for what they have brought to the industry. Their perseverance has now led to a breakthrough in breeding opportunity an opportunity that drove their vision and dedication much longer than many of us breeders, who now will enjoy the fruits of their breeding strategy, may ever truly appreciate. For these breeders, the commitment to breeding a different kind of dairy cow has paid off for many of us, and the genetic base of polled cattle will never be the same again. Aggressive, risk takers. As the early pioneers gradually broke through the genetic barriers of polled bloodlines, their efforts were joined by another tier of breeders. These breeders, together with the pioneers, perhaps added the momentum to the polled breeding business. Their willingness to combine some of the most extreme elite bulls and females with less-popular polled mates delivered in time the anticipated genetic progress that took polled breeding to new levels. A quick review of today s most heavily used polled genetics illustrates the results of the early risk takers. Bolton, Goldwyn, Advent-Red, Durham, Shottle, Oman, Toystory and other top Holstein sires appear in the pedigree of many polled young sires. Even Lawn Boy P-Red, the emperor of the polled genetics himself, is a unique combination of Aerostar, Rudolph and Manfred. High rollers. And now, as anyone tracking the results of elite genetic sales can see, there are some high rollers stepping into the polled breeding scene. The number of high genomic polled heifers that have sold for prices over six-figures in the past year is amazing, to say the least. Clearly, the market for polled genetics has exploded, and every leading breeder wants to get in on a part of it even at these high prices. The velocity of which these sales are spreading the best polled The rapidly growing trend for polled genetics will change Red & White breeding programs. Just how far with the change go? genetics will most certainly secure the future supply of progressive, advanced genetics. Even genetic diversity will come with the addition of players in the polled breeding field. Where do Red breeders fit? So, where does the booming trend of breeding polled cattle leave the Red & White breeder? Polled genetics and Red & White cattle once seemed almost synonymous. Most of the early pioneers in developing polled dairy genetics also were avid breeders of Red & White cattle. While in many cases this is still true today, the playing field could quickly change. As a Red & White breeder and loyalist myself, I wonder if the day will soon come that a value-added attribute once nearly exclusive to the Red & White breeders will be taken over by the traditional black and white Holstein population. Is that good, or bad? I am not sure there is a single answer to these questions, but there definitely is plenty to think about. One scenario that could illustrate how fast this happens would be to consider two outstanding full-sibs, sired by Colt P-Red. Both are red, one is polled and one is not. The demand for the polled gene today will likely drive matings for the polled heifer to be mated with top black and white bulls, or polled bulls (likely now to be RC only). With luck, this will create high genetic value polled offspring, black or red-carrier, but less likely red. The full sister might still have demand, but because she is not polled, the demand for her would very likely be for red offspring. The end result is still good for the red and white genetic pool, but that future pool loses out on the combination of red and polled. The synonymous frequency of polled and Red & White begins to grow apart. As a Red & White breeder, will your future genetic base be polled, Red & White, or Polled Red & White? Perhaps that is the question each of us should answer as we create our vision. Though admittedly not the exact same situation, the beef Hereford breed is an interesting case study. Up until a few short years ago, Herefords were two different breeds Hereford (with horns), and the Polled Hereford breed. Today, the two independent associations have merged and polled has become just a trait within the breed albeit a very predominant trait carried in the majority of the bloodlines registered. Again, I realize these challenges are only real if anyone cares. But if Red & White breeders today (and tomorrow) want to truly pay tribute to the pioneers that brought us the opportunities of today, we need to be mindful of the goal to breed superior Red & White cattle which also have a high frequency of the polled gene. The sustainability and vitality of RWDCA also may be influenced by how wide the spread, or gap, in new breeding trends gets. As mentioned before, the more emphasis placed on polled genetics without consideration to coat color, the less value breeders will get, or see in RWDCA. There is no easy answer, but clearly an imminent challenge. It will be exciting to watch where the market trend takes us. And with the now unstoppable trend, the challenges will rise for breeders to define their breeding goals, and stick to them. 37 Rollen in the Red & White Polled Cattle by Kayla Wright, RWDCA Intern tiger-lily DST LIZ P-RED-ET (above) CURR-VALE DELIGHTED p-red-et (right) Nestled away just north of Watkins Glen, New York in Rock Stream is where Allen, Carol and Nate Faus call home to their polled Red & White herd of cattle. Their story begins in 1985 when Allen and Carol moved to New York from Pennsylvania to start their farming career, Rollen-N s Dairy was established. The farm consists of Allen and Carol along with their five children. One of their children, Nate is now the herd manager and owns some of the cows in the current herd. Red & Whites came into the picture when their first bred and owned calf was born on the farm. This struck Rollen-N s Dairy s interest in red cattle and have been breeding for red ever since. Shortly after their first red calf was born, the family purchased a cow that was polled which then struck the desire for Red & White polled cattle. Nate stated when him and his siblings were young they would always asking if the newborn calf was red and white or black and white. After breeding their cattle with polled bulls, such as Burket Falls No-Nox and Burket Falls Lo-Nox, the new question was, is it polled? Currently, Rollen-N s Dairy consists of 90 milk cows with a combined total of slightly over 200 head total. Over 90% are red and all the black and white cattle are red carrier. 25 of the milking cows are polled and around half of their one to two year old heifers are polled as well, leaving 75% of young heifers to be polled as well. Rollen-N s Dairy introduced polled cattle early on using their own genetics and breeding with polled bulls. One in particular that sired some of their best cows a little over fifteen years ago was Burket- Falls Lo-Nox. Nate stated that one of their better polled cows was Rollen-N s LB Nib Tibble-P, an early Lawn Boy P daughter that now has many polled daughters in the herd that resemble desirable traits. Then about 2 years ago, the family along with partners, Ken Riehl, and Durrell Martin purchased their first high genomic polled heifer; Tiger-Lily Dst Liz P-Red-ET. Liz P-Red-ET is a full sister to Ladd P at Select Sires and at the time of purchasing her, she was ranked as the highest GTPI red heifer. Her early daughters are now some of the highest polled heifers, stated Nate. Currently Liz has daughters by Cameron, Balti, and Satchel P. She will calve in this Fall carrying a Numero Uno heifer. Another addition to the herd was Curr-Vale Delighted P-Red-ET, purchased this summer. Delighted P-Red is a red Colt P out of a Shottle daughter of Curr-Vale Goldwyn Delicious. Delicious is ranked 3rd on the GTPI Red or RC cow of the breed and is a 7th generation excellent cow, being scored at EX-91. Delighted P-Red herself has a GTPI of making this partnership very excited to work with her in the future. 37 The breeding protocols that Rollen-N s dairy utilizes is only using polled bulls on horned cows so every mating has a 50%, 75% or 100% chance of being polled. They use some horned bulls, but only on polled cows. As we get more polled cows, we can use more good horned bulls and still get polled offspring, quoted by herd manager Nate. Current polled bulls that are being used for breeding are Colt, Dancer, Dolo, Effect, Ladd, Motive, Proxy, Relief, Rematch and Satchel. To increase the herd size and number of polled daughters, they have their high genomic heifers on a flushing program and have even exported some embryos. Currently, Rollen-N s Dairy does not have any bulls in AI just yet, but have acquired their first polled bull calves that will be entering the AI studs in the near future. In the future, Rollen-N s Dairy wishes to have the herd almost entirely polled. They hope to continue their breeding protocols with polled bulls to breed more homozygous polled cows that will have all polled offspring. There are only a few homozygous polled daughters on the ground but hope to increase this ratio. They believe if they can genetically eliminate a job that is not fun for them and uncomfortable for the calves, they feel that they are doing the future of the breed a big favor. When asked where they see the popularity and demand for polled Red & Whites in the next 5 years, Nate stated, I think the demand for polled genetics will continue to grow. High genomic, polled red or RC heifers have been selling extremely high at sales. We have seen a huge increase in high genomic polled bulls in the last 2 years. This will continue to make more polled animals from the very best cow families. As more and more polled animals become available, horned will become an undesirable genetic trait that breeders will avoid. I think in several more years the very highest genomic heifers in the world will be polled. I think the Red & White industry has been pioneering polled genetics because Red & White breeders have been willing to sacrifice to pursue something new and different. The demand and desire for polled cattle within this herd is well expressed through passion and the cattle themselves. The Faus family believes highly in their cattle and what they can possess through polled genetics. Only time will tell whether polled cattle will rank high in the industry in the near future. For now, the impact is clearly shown through numbers and the animals themselves at Rollen-N s Dairy. The impact on polled Red & Whites is just beginning.

MORGAN LUNDY, WISCONSIN Hello Red and White enthusiasts, my name is Morgan Lundy. I am the 18-year-old daughter of Scott and Deb Lundy of Jefferson, Wisconsin. Together with my parents and two older siblings Mark and Megan we own and operate a 190 acre farm in southeast Wisconsin where we milk 60 Holstein cows and raise 80-head of young stock. The herd is currently 75% red and white with the remaining 25% being red factored. Red and whites have been a huge part of my life since a young age, and it is truly an honor to be a 2012 Albrecht Memorial Scholarship recipient. My passion for red and whites was something I was born with, raised with and consider the driving force of my future. Growing up on my family s farm as fueled my passion for agriculture and the dairy industry unlike anything I could imagine. Some of my earliest memories are of following my mom with the post dip as we milked the cows, helping my sister feed calves milk, and pushing up hay and feeding cows corn and protein with my brother. Eventually, I became actively involved in all farm duties and events. Today I can be found milking, feeding calves, young stock, and cows, following herd health protocols, record keeping, scrapping barns and just about anything else needing to be done. Following in the footsteps of my older brother and sister I was given my first 41 calf to show in a peewee showmanship class when I was three years old. Since my first calf I have built a herd of over 50 Holsteins, which I enjoy showing at local shows, the Midwest Spring Red and White Show and World Dairy Expo. To breed strong cow families with cattle that possess the conformation necessary to succeed in the show ring and produce profitably over several lactations has always been the farm s goal and one that I avidly share. To achieve this goal bulls like Apples Absolute-Red, Scientific B Defiant RC, Comestar Lauburns RC, and Claynook Baseline-Red are being used. The heifer pens are full of daughters by RedBurst-Red, Attitiude-Red, Contender-Red, Mr. Burns RC and Hvezda RC. The milking herd is comprised of daughters by Redman-Red, Starfire RC, Redliner-Red, and Talent RC. From my herd I have bred and developed three Junior All-American nominees and one Reserve Jr. All-American in the last three years. I have also produced several cows that have surpassed 100,000 pounds of milk lifetime and earned numerous lifetime production awards. My family has done a great job in teaching me to breed and manage good cattle. They have also encouraged me to become involved in 4-H, FFA, Junior Holstein and Red and White Associations as well as other activities that have helped me develop as a person. One of my favorite and most rewarding activities has been dairy judging. Becoming a skilled judge has taught me the importance of a good breeding program and the relationship between type and production, while successfully judging at district, state and national contests as a member of many successful teams. In addition to the judging and showing, I have taken on many leadership roles in several youth organizations. I am currently serving as vice-president of my 4-H club (Cream of the Crop). Last year with the help of my 4-H club we developed and hosted a practical dairy judging contest for 4-H, FFA and junior breed youth. Unlike typical judging contests that test a person s ability to judge cattle and give sets of oral reasons our contest had the teams of four work together through six stations that cover 1. sire selection, 2. registered heifers 3. commercial heifer selection at our farm and 4. DHIA herd summary comparison, 5. common dairy cattle disease identification and 6. a quiz on dairy industry knowledge at the Fort Atkinson high school. The second annual Cream of the Crop Dairy Challenge will be held Saturday, October 20th. To learn more about this contest google the event or contact me. morgan.lundy@yahoo.com In the future I will attend U.W. Madison Farm and Industry Short Course. I will ultimately return to the family farm and become our in-house embryo transfer and flush cow specialist while continuing to build a herd with deep pedigrees, high type, good production, excellent longevity and cow families that breed true. Thank you again for selecting me for this scholarship! ROSE MORIAN, PENNSYLVANIA My name is Rose Morian. I am the 20 year old daughter of Gary and Denise Morian and have grown up on our family dairy farm, Mish-Ro Holsteins and Jerseys. I am currently a student at Liberty University Online, as that allowed me to stay at home and work with my cows. I plan on pursuing Journalism, due to the tremendous impact of the written word, with a specific goal of bringing good attention to the honorable and hardworking farmers across the nation. In 2001, I won the Crawford County Holstein club s calf ring contest, which is a program for kids 8-13 to write an essay and be interviewed to be selected to win a registered Holstein calf; the first heifer out of the calf won is then donated back to the program. Having won Alright BLK Royal Beth, I started on a journey that would shape me into the person I am today. Beth s granddaughter was my first Red and White and since then my herd has increased each year. Although I currently own only 3 red and whites, they are all owned and bred and decedents of Beth in one way or another. Last year I was pleased to have my oldest Red and White, then a Jr. 3 year old, win Grand Champion and Best Owned and Bred of the 4-H Red and White show at Crawford County Fair. I had shown her in years past at local and national levels and was always pleased with her accomplishments. Thankfully, she has only gotten better with time. The opportunities that have arisen out of having cows, and the joys of working with the Red and White s, have made the last eleven years instrumental in forming the present and the future. I look forward to seeing where the road I am on will take me in the future, but I know that cows and farming will always be a part of it Deadline - June 1st - Information at

42 ALBRECHT DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD Stephanie Stout, Janesville, WI Presented by John Schmitz 2012 Red & White Dairy Cattle The following awards were presented at the Annual Awards Banquet on Wednesday, August 15. has always bred for long lasting, trouble free cows that would thrive in any environment whether tie stall or free stall, which they currently operate. To stick with his pioneering roots, this individual, after AI units refused to take his bull in, decided with his good friend Larry Bennett to prove a bull out of his best cow family on his own. This bull was Valleyriver Ruben Redman- Red, leading Red & White bull for a number of years on the Canadian LPI list, siring long lasting, great uddered and top health trait cows. Cows such as Redman Kella, who was highest mammary scored cow in Canada and Blondin Redman Seisme, Supreme Champion at the Royal Winter Fair a few years ago. Another bull from the Valleyriver herd is Valleyriver Joyboy-Red at Trans-World Genetics. In 2001, Valleyriver Farms received their Master Breeder award from Holstein Canada. Valleyriver has been a member of the Canadian Red & White Club since it was formed in This individual is active in his local Holstein Club and community. Just a few weeks ago, he came out of retirement to pitch a few innings in a fastball tournament! Please join me in congratulating this year's winner from the Northeastern hills of Grey County, just outside the little town of Bognor, Ontario - John Gillies of Valleyriver Farms. Stephanie Stout receives the 2012 Albrecht Distinguished Service Award Presentation by John Schmitz It is not the number of years to be distinguished service, but going above and beyond in the dedication to the Red & White Dairy Cattle Association. This year's recipient of the Albrecht Distinguished Service Award has done just that. She has a Strong belief in the Red & White cow, Takes the time to explain, is Optimistic for the future and has a Unique character and personality. On Monday, she posted a quote on her Facebook wall, "Take a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life." These descriptions spell out the last name of Stephanie Stout. Congratulations on the Albrecht Distinguished Service Award! j.p. ostrander young breeder AWARD Richard Hurtgen, Monroe, OR Presented by Kayla Wright larry moore master breeder award John Gillies, Bognor, Ontario, Canada Presented by Ray Van Der Wielen John Gillies receives the 2012 Larry Moore Master Breeder Award from Ray Van Der Wielen Presentation by Ray Van Der Wielen This evening, it is my privilege and honor to present the Larry Moore Master Breeder Award to a fellow member of the RWDCA who has also showed the pioneer spirit within the Red & White cattle industry like Mr. Moore. This year's winner and his family, like Mr. Moore are pioneers as well. His family immigrated from Scotland in 1847, becoming new Canadians and landowners. The original farm has been in the family name for over 150 years. In 1973, this individual joined his parents in the farm operation that, at the time, consisted of 25 dairy cows. The herd has expanded to the current size of 250 head of dairy animals, with 100 cows milking that he farms with his wife Lee and sons Brock and Brandon. Daughter Brittany is an esthetician. The land base for this family farm has also expanded from the original crown deed of approximately 100 acres to the current 500 acres owned and 150 acres rented. As with any true Holstein breeder, the herd has not only grown in size, it has grown in quality also. Over a total of 17 EX, 205 VG and 78 GP cows have been bred. He has also captured Premier Breeder at the Ontario Red & White Show in 2010 and 2011 and Premier Exhibitor in This individual 42 Richard Hurtgen receives the 2012 J.P. 'Doc' Ostrander Young Breeder Award Presentation by Kayla Wright Our recipient is not able to join us this evening, but I d like to share some of the accomplishments of our J.P. Doc Ostrander Young Breeder Award recipient. His greatest achievement is breeding Hurtgen-Vue Reality-Red, the highest-ranking red and white bull ever to appear on Holstein Association USA s TPI List. Reality-Red was Premier Sire Runner-up for R&W All- Canadians last year. In addition to TPI and show credits, this bull is the #1 EFI Sire (outcross sire) in the Holstein Breed and consistently ranks high for TPI, feet and legs, and fat percent. Richey also bred Reality-Red s dam, Hurtgen-Vue HHR Vanessa-Red EX-93 3E DOM. Production Winner at California Holstein Show Jr 3 Year Old, 37, P and 193,130 lifetime production and dam of an EX-91 and 3 VG daughters. From his Lace-Red cow family, he also developed 3 generations of EX red and whites, two of which were Res All-American R&W 2 yr olds. Richey has 4 Reserve, 2 Honorable Mention, and 24 R&W All-American nominations to his credit. Within the herd at Hurtgen-Vue our goal is and has always been to breed good, solid, long-lasting cows. We put an emphasis on type, feet and legs, and udder composite in our breeding program. We also include percent fat and protein in our breeding criteria. Components have always been something that has been emphasized in our herd. This has resulted in a Holstein herd that will average as high as 3.5% protein and 4.1% on the bulk tank. I am a firm believer in the idea that if we build the cow right, the rest will take care of itself. Richey owns 50 Red and Whites and 70 *RC. In addition to homebred genetics, he has purchased embryos with red genetics from popular cow families including Astrahoe RM Rosa Rae-Lyn, Markwell BStar E Raven, Scientific Debutante Rae, Pinehurst Beaujolais-Red, Ernlo Jolt Daisy, and Yursden Kite Caramac-Red. The 2012 J.P. Doc Ostrander Young Breeder Award winner is Richard Hurtgen of Monroe, Oregon. When contacted about his award recognition, our recipient had these comments: I d like to thank the RWDCA organization (continued on page 43)

43 Association Awards Recipients The RWDCA congratulates our award winners and applauds their dedication to Red & Whites! (continued from page 42) for recognizing me as the Young Breeder Award recipient. I appreciate the interest in my breeding program and philosophy. It was an honor to be the very first Albrecht Scholarship Winner, which helped me arrive at this point in my life today. And to think it all started with the birth of a red and white bull calf in October 1984 by the name of Hurtgen-Vue Superstar-Red. It was the beginning of an all black and white herd that over time has focused on adding more red and white color to the herd. Every dairyman has different criteria when it comes to creating the next generation of any cow family. I take an immense amount of pride in Reality-Red s impact in both black and white and red and white circles. I look forward to his continuing positive impact on our breed. junior breeder AWARD Kelsey Crull, Fond du Lac, WI Presented by Stephanie Stout Presentation by John Schmitz The Keystone Award recognizes grassroots members who have given dedicated support to the Red & White breed and the RWDCA. 45 Junior News 2012 Red & White Essay Contest Winners Dream Big by Kati Kindschuh - Essay Contest Winner - Intermediate Division A dream is sparked by something larger than life. We drift off during the day, imagining what it could be like if that dream came true. Some people say that a dream is simply a dream. They tell you that it will never become a reality so it s not worth your time fantasizing about. But what if you didn t listen to those people? In life we should never consider someone s words when all they do is dampen your hope of achievement. No matter how big or small, any dream that can be broken down into goals is achievable. My name is Kati Kindschuh. I live on a 300 acre family owned dairy farm in rural Wisconsin where we raise Registered Holsteins and Jersey cattle. I am a member of the Red and White Dairy Cattle Association along with being active in my county state and national junior association. Dairy cattle have been a passion of mine since a very early age, with the show ring being the biggest contributor to my continued interest. My goals with my Red and Whites have changed over the years but as a teenager I see the importance of quality over quantity. Focusing on pedigrees and choosing strong sires, my goals are to develop outstanding females that can compete at the state and national levels of showing. As a young girl, growing up on the farm and being around cows is all I have ever known. Being a second generation farm kid, my father is my biggest inspiration to succeed in life and with my animals. When I was four years old, I started showing calves at the county fair. This tradition was something that I looked forward to, even more then Christmas! As I grew older, I was craving something bigger. I started showing at the Wisconsin State Fair. After seeing such beautiful animals and people as passionate about the dairy industry as me, I still wanted to keep advancing. Last year, I had the opportunity to participate in the junior showmanship contest at World Dairy Expo. With these opportunities and my ambitious drive to be better, I keep on track to where I want to go in my dairy project. Pink, white, red, blue and purple may seem like just Cybil Fisher Cybil For Photos: cybilfisher@hotmail.com Lea leamccullough@gmail.com Jenny jennythomas614@yahoo.com photography For reprints or billing questions: Office Fax cybilfisher@hotmail.com 1609 Redstone Trail Green Bay, WI colors of the rainbow to some, but to me they are shades of achievement. These colors are critiques of my hard work, which I gladly accept. With every animal that I exhibit, I gain knowledge of how to improve on her and her herdmates. If I ever want to exhibit at the National Red and White shows, I must implement my knowledge when it comes time to breed heifers and cows. It s imperative to choose sires that have sex-semen to use, or bulls that have a high heifer percentage in order to establish more females within my herd. This is just one method to better my herd, but remembering that patience is a virtue, because it s really hard to wait nine months for that new calf and changing faults might not happen in one generation. Going once, twice, sold! Many young entrepreneurs, like me, often look towards consignment sales to purchase high quality cattle to help jumpstart their herd. By investing in young stock, you can increase your herd at an expense that will pay for itself with offspring. Buying too many animals that you think have potential but lack a strong pedigree is comparable to buying cheap shoes that will barely last you the year; it s just not worth your investment. When purchasing cattle, I promise myself that I will dedicate my attention to it, and work hard in order to achieve my goals of exhibiting at the National Red and White Shows. All men dream, but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds, wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act on their dreams with open eyes, to make them possible. T.E. Lawrence. Individuals, like myself, whose attitude doesn t derail their goals and dreams have a plan. They crave greatness from themselves and won t stop until they ve reached it. I won t stop until I can say proudly that I have the quality of cattle that are eligible to compete with the best females in the country. This goal makes me a more creditable owner, a trustworthy agriculturist of the dairy industry and a wellrespected person overall Red & White Essay Contest Deadline: June 1 - Details in the April Issue of The Red Bloodlines Hand Engraved and or Painted Elegant gifts for any occasion OR Awards for your dairy show - Call today! Junior News 2012 Red & White Essay Contest Winners My Start in Red & Whites by Cole Booth - Essay Contest Winner - Junior Division Hi I m Cole and I like to show red and white heifers. My dad is the person who introduced me to dairy. He grew up on a dairy farm and showed at his county fair, District show and State Fair. He told me about when he won big trophies and that inspired me to want to show and win trophies like his too. It was 2008 when I showed my first ever red and white calf named Sachet. Her owner was Bill of Lyn-Vale Holsteins. Bill let me break her to lead and show her. She was a March calf. The first place I showed her was at the district show. Getting ready for the show my dad taught me how to clip her body and I watched him do her top line. I got fifth place. The second place I showed her was at the Sheboygan County Fair. I got second place. After the fair she went back to her farm and Bill ended up putting her in the National Red and White Convention Sale that summer. That spring my sisters and I got to buy our own red and white heifers through a red and white sale. We started to get excited about Red & Whites and we now own 6 Red & Whites of our own. I also am leasing a couple of Red & Whites from Lyn-Vale Holsteins and Hanke Farms! Last November our family built a barn for show heifers Postmark Deadline: December 1, 2012 and dry cows. With this barn came more responsibility and hard work. I am now responsible for taking care of all my show heifers. I feed them grain, hay and throw poop piles into the ally morning and night. During the summer, I also had a goal of leading and washing my heifers every day coming up to shows. Working hard isn t easy in the summer. There were lots of days when I wanted to play sports or go exploring with my buddy, Caden. To be honest, there were days I did do that but the majority of my summer I worked hard so my heifers would be ready for the up-coming shows. It really did paid off and lead to success. I received Overall Supreme Showman at the Midwest Summer Red and White show and Sheboygan County Fair. I also received the World Dairy Expo Champion Jr. Division Champion Showman. My hard work helped my heifers too. My fall calf was named High Honorable Mention Jr. All American Red and White Holstein, and my spring yearling was Nominated Jr. All American Red and White Holstein. I enjoy having success with my red and white heifers in the show ring and look forward to fun years and learning more in the future. 47 Junior News Intern Insights by Kayla Wright It s hard to believe that I will be back in River Falls starting my junior year of college and not being in the office registering cattle or writing press releases! Even though the summer has come to an end and so has my opportunity of being your intern, this was an eventful summer that I will never forget. This internship has broadened my horizons in marketing the dairy industry and corresponding with those within the Association. During my time in the office I was able to correspond with breeders from near and far to answer questions or to just simply talk about cows. I was able to travel to shows and convention, design promotional advertisements, register elite cattle and welcome in new members to the Association. Attending the National Red & White convention was the highlight of the summer. It was a privilege to travel to Listowel, Ontario, Canada and meet the members of this growing industry. I was able to tour Bombur s, Sauder s and Fradon Holsteins to see their elite cattle descending from some well known Red & White cattle from the heart of Canada. There was also a great turn out for the sale, show and banquet. Congratulations again to all award winners on your success with your Red & White cattle. This fall I will be able to help out at our booth at World Dairy Expo and watch elite Red & Whites parade on the colored shavings. If you are there swing by the booth to talk with myself and past interns! Then after Expo, it s back to the books, studying for tests and helping out with dairy club events. I would like to wish all exhibitors at fall shows the best of luck and hope to see many of you again during Expo. In addition I would like to take this time to thank everyone in the Association for giving me this opportunity this summer. This has been an experience of a lifetime from communicating with breeders to designing the promotional advertisements. I encourage anyone whom is interested in marketing the dairy industry and corresponding with others to apply for this internship next summer! I can be reached at kayla.wright@my.uwrf.edu if anyone has questions about the internship. Hope to see many of you in Madison, where the dairy industry meets! Until Then, Kayla Wright 2012 RWDCA Summer Intern Red & White queen review by Colleen Ziller Greetings! Colleen Colleen the Cow Queen. That was the nickname my Aunt Kim gave to me several years ago. Now the name fits! My name is Colleen Ziller, and I am very honored to be able to represent the Red & White Dairy Cattle Association as the 2012 National Red & White Queen. I am 21 years old and will be attending UW- Platteville or UW- River Falls this spring and be majoring in animal science with an emphasis in dairy. With my degree I hope to become an animal nutritionist. I also plan on having a 75 cow herd of my own. I grew up on my family s 50 registered Holstein/Red & White Holstein Dairy farm in Huntley, Illinois. As Red & White queen I plan on continuing to promote the breed, recruit new members and get more juniors involved. I am really looking forward to meeting more Red & White breeders and getting a chance to go watch great cows compete against each other. The 11 hour drive to Listowel was worth every minute of it. We had the opportunity to tour Bobmur, Sauder Holme and Fradon. Each farm had great cows and I can t thank you enough for opening up your farms to us. On Wednesday and Thursday we were able to see some really great cattle at the sale and the show. Congratulations to everyone who purchased a new animal and to all the exhibitors. All the cattle looked fantastic! Thank you again to the Canadian Red & White Club for putting together such an awesome convention. Everyone was so hospitable and made the convention great. See you all at the upcoming shows! Colleen Ziller Interested in becoming the 2013 Queen? Deadline is June 1, 2013 Details at 47
