Mama Swishy Swashy
Mama Swishy Swashy loved her children Paul and Solomon. She wanted them to be happy and healthy. Every day she carried water home from the stream in a clean bucket with a tight fitting lid. She carried the bucket on top of her head. 1
She knew the water was not safe for her children to drink because it came from above the ground, and even looked dirty. She could see things floating in the water. She knew there were things in the water such as germs that could make you sick. So, Mama Swishy Swashy let the bucket sit all morning so some of the dirt and germs could settle to the bottom. 2
Next, she found an empty cooking pot. Swishy swashy, swishy swashy the pot with ash and water to make it very, very clean and let it dry in the sun. 3
While the sun was high in the sky Mama Swishy Swashy covered a very, very clean empty pot with a clean cloth tied on tight with a rope. She carefully poured the water from the full pot into the empty pot. She did not pour in the water from the very bottom of the pot because that is where many of the germs were left in the old pot. 4
Even more germs and dirt were left on the cloth! Mama Swishy Swashy carefully removed the cloth so the germs and dirt didn t fall in the pot. She put the cloth in the wash basin to wash and dry in the sun later. Little Paul cried, Can I drink the water now? 5
Not yet, dear Paul. Even though the water looks clean, there are still things in the water that we can not see. There are germs which make you sick. Mama Swishy Swashy wants you happy and healthy by drinking safe water. To make it safe, we need to boil the water on the fire. When the water gets hot enough to make bubbles like a waterfall for three whole minutes then it will be clean enough to drink. Mama Swishy Swashy warned, Be careful to stay away from the fire so you do not get burned. 6
Will Paul be able to drink the water after watching it boil for three minutes? (Not right away. It will be safe to drink after the water cools. Otherwise she will burn her tongue.) Where should Mama Swishy Swashy keep the water after it is boiled? (It can be kept in the same pot or in another clean pot as long as it has a tight fitting lid.) 7
Mama Swishy Swashy loves her children and she does not want them sick from all the dirt and germs in the water. She wants Solomon and Paul well and healthy. Mama Swishy Swashy knew that a cup of safe water is the first step to better health. 8

Clean Hands Clean Heart Building Block 4f Clean Hands, Clean Heart 1 Clean Smiling Hands Physical Application 1. I d like you to meet my two friends, Brother Hand and Sister Hand. Can you show me your hands? (children wave hands). These hands look healthy and happy. What can Brother Hand and Sister Hand do? (play, work, eat, help Mother, pray, etc.) What do your hands do? (READ through ALL the Physical Application story on pages 1-6 first. RETURN to lesson plan before READING the Spiritual Application story on posters 1-6.) Spiritual Application 1. We have hands that can be dirty or clean. We also have hearts. Where is your heart? (children point to heart) What we do with our hands can make our hearts feel good or bad. What can hands do that makes you heart feel good? (help Mother, greet a friend, pray, etc.) (Clean Hands, Clean Heart is adapted from the original Mr. Soap by Celeste Hein, U.M.C.A.)

Clean Hands, Clean Hearts 2 Dirty Smiling Hands Physical Application 2. Oh! Oh! What have Brother Hand and Sister Hand been doing here? Looks like they have been playing and have gotten dirty! It s fun to play, isn t it? Now their hands are all dirty. Look at your hands; are they dirty? (children examine hands) Spiritual Application 2. Did you know that hearts can also get dirty? What we do with our hands affects our hearts. If I hit someone with my hand, my heart will feel bad and dirty. What else can hands do that make their hearts get dirty? (steal, push, not share, etc.)
Building Block #4f
Building Block #4f Clean Hand, Clean Hearts 3 Worms and Microbes Hands Physical Application 3. OOOH! Look here What s happened now? Something worse than dirt! It looks like tiny microbes and worms! Brother and Sister Hand have been to the latrine and didn t wash. And now it s time to eat. What s going to happen when they touch food with those dirty hands? (cramps, diarrhea, get sick when microbes and worms go into their stomach) Spiritual Application 3. Now what s happening? Brother and Sister Hand s hearts are getting dirtier because they did bad things. When you let your heart stay dirty, it makes your heart sick. What will your face look like if your heart is sick? (children act out expressions sad, hurt, etc.)
Building Block #4f
Clean Hand, Clean Hearts - 4 Soap and Water Hands Physical Application 4. What are Brother Hand and Sister Hand doing here? (washing) That s right! They re washing with soap and water so they can get rid of the dirt and microbes and worms. (Demonstrate washing between fingers, under fingernails and up arms). Can you wash your hands? (children demonstrate washing hands) Now they can help mother cook, and can eat without causing sickness! Spiritual Application 4. Brother Hand and Sister Hand don t want to live with a dirty heart, but they don t know how to make it clean. Can they wash their hearts with soap and water to make them clean again? (No) What will they do? (sigh)
Building Block #4f
Clean Hand, Clean Hearts 5 Crying and Bleeding Hands Physical Application 5. Here s something else that can happen to hands. What do you see here? Yes, Brother and Sister Hand are cut and bleeding. They really hurt, don t they? What should they do now? (Pick up picture #4 to cue children to answer) Yes, they should wash with soap and water and wrap CLEAN cloths around the cuts to keep the germs out and keep them from getting infected. Spiritual Application 5. When we can t do something on our own, what do we do? We ask someone for help. No one can wash their own heart clean; we need help. Because God loves us, He sent someone to clean our hearts for us. God sent His son Jesus. If we ask Him for help, Jesus will wash our hearts clean and make them healthy. Who is Jesus? (God s son) What can He do? (wash our hearts clean) Building Block #4f
Building Block #4f
Clean Hand, Clean Hearts - 6 Clean Smiling Hands Physical Application 6. What kind of hands do you have? (Have everyone wave their hands in the air) Are they clean and healthy and helpful to others? [Return to the Lesson Plan before reading the Spiritual Application ] Spiritual Application 6. Have you already asked Jesus to clean your heart? Would you like to? The Bible says in Psalm 51:10 Create in me a new, clean heart Oh God, filled with new clean thoughts and right desires. What are some clean thoughts and right desires God wants us to have? (loving friends, being kind, helping others) Let s say this verse together as a prayer: Create in me a new, clean heart Oh God, filled with new clean thoughts and right desires. Please take away all the bad actions and thoughts in my heart. Thank you, Jesus, for making my heart clean. [Expand prayer as appropriate.] Amen. Even if we have already asked Jesus to clean our hearts, we sometimes still do things that make our hearts dirty. When this happens, Jesus is always ready to wash our hearts clean again when we ask him. Let s all wave our hands to celebrate clean hands and clean hearts! (wave hands)

Dramas 6a & 6b Building Block 6 Drama 6A: Friend 1: (comes out of the bushes zipping up pants and is holding 2 fresh fruits or vegetables. He begins to eat one vegetable and holds out the other to Friend 2.) I just found these, out in the field. Would you like to have one? Friend 2: (looking at friend) What were you just doing out in the field? Friend 1: I had to appropriate expression). (use the bush; make a long call, etc. Use the most Friend 2: (taking the fruit / vegetable) Has this been washed? Friend 1: Of course it hasn t been washed. There is no water in the field. Friend 2: I like these, but I do not want to eat it without washing it in safe water. Friend 1: Why do we need to wash it? Just eat it. It s good! Friend 2: Didn t you just relieve yourself in that field? Friend 1: Oh yes, but I didn t poop on your (name of fruit / vegetable) Friend 2: There are lots of people and animals that defecate in that field. Did you see any flies out there? Friend 1: Oh yes; they were everywhere. Friend 2: Flies like to land on poop and then land on food. Poop has lots of microbes in it that flies carry around on their feet. Those microbes make us sick. I learned in Health Club that we can get cholera, typhoid fever, or round worm from eating the microbes in unwashed vegetables. Friend 1: (spiting out fruit / vegetable) Ooh! I don t want to get sick. Did you say typhoid? My father had that; it was awful! Let s go wash these.
Drama 6b For the meal, use a common food that is eaten by hand (for example ugali, matoke, injera, etc.) and sauce. Friend 1 washes her hands, then sits to eat her meal. Friend 2 walks by. Friend 1: Hello! Come sit with me! Would you like some (food name)? It is really good. Friend 2: Oh, thank you. That is very kind. (sits down with Friend 1 and begins to eat, licking her fingers after each bite.) Friend 1 has stopped eating and is watching Friend 2 with doubt as she eats and licks her fingers. Friend 2: This is very delicious. (notices Friend 1 has stopped eating) Is something the matter? Friend 1: I learned in our school Health Club that our hands have lots of microbes on them that can make us very sick. If we eat without first washing our hands or lick our fingers while eating, we can get sick and make others sick as well. You are my friend and I do not want either of us to get sick. Friend 2: (stops eating and looks at her hand) I didn t know that. What should I do? Friend 1: If you wash your hands before touching food you can stop the spread of disease. Friend 2 washes her hands, then both Friend 2 & 1 continue eating together.
