A review of 2015 Following Sue s decision to take (a very well earned) retirement, we took over the Welfare role in February Thankfully Sue had chosen to leave at one of the quieter times of the year, but as kitten season came into full swing in the Spring, we realised just how difficult Sue and Mary s jobs had been. As with all animal charities there are always far more calls for help than we can possibly fulfil, and there were days when the phone just never seemed to stop ringing. Thanks to our dedicated fosterers, we were relieved to find that we were able to help all of the more urgent cases and we did our best to help the others find a place at other charities, but sadly there are simply not enough rescue places available, especially in summer. The branch s ability to help cats in need is driven mainly by the number of fosterers we have to care for them and also by the time it takes to home the cats. On both of these areas we can report positive news: two new fosterers have joined the team this year, and our new website, along with its Find-a-cat facility, has resulted in far more offers of homes, this combined with the admirable efforts of Jenni and the Homing Team, means that we have managed to significantly increase the number of cats homed this year. Whilst we are pleased with this news, there are still so many more poor cats needing help and therefore our priority for 2016 is the recruitment of more fosterers, as the more we have, the more cats we can rescue. Please consider whether in 2016 you can take even just one cat temporarily into your home, or if this really isn t possible, perhaps you know someone else who might be able to help. We have tried advertising on our website, on social media and at local vets, but with little response. We are sure there are people out there who would love a cat but are unable to make a permanent commitment, and we believe they would find the experience very rewarding. Our own task has been made easier by the support we have received, especially from Brender who has been fantastic, patiently trapping reluctant cats and dropping everything to rush off and rescue queens that have just given birth outside, often at the most inconvenient of times. We also thank Sue for all the advice she has continued to give us over the year. We know whatever situation we are presented with, Sue has probably seen it all before! Our thanks also go to all the staff at Foxgrove vets, who have shown such patience and care for our cats. The nurses have even fostered orphan kittens for us, when we had nowhere for them to go, and they have also helped find homes for some of our cats. As if this wasn t enough, Sarah Kelly also raised the amazing sum of 4,165 for us at the end of last year, which has helped with the increase in the number of cats this year. Finally our thanks to all the other volunteers who fundraise and perform all the other essential tasks, and also to all the members and donors who kindly provide the necessary funds the branch needs. I hope that the stories Tracy is bringing you in the newsletter show how much the cats are enjoying their second chances at life and how worthwhile your contribution is. Janet, Laurence, and Laura PS from all supporters and everyone involved in our branch: A HUGE thank you to Janet, Laurence, Laura, Jenni and the Homing team for taking over the welfare roles with very little experience when our branch was on the brink at the beginning of the year. With the ever dedicated Brender and support from Sue, the needy and abandoned cats and kittens in our area have been helped wherever possible and so many are now in loving forever homes. What a difference a year makes as they say. Tracy, Editor
Chester Chester (formerly Squeak) featured in both our Spring and Summer newsletters for rehoming. Chester was adopted by Helen in July. Helen tells me We are so happy Chester has found his forever home with us, he is adorable and frankly just perfect. He has definitely hit the jackpot with Helen and her family! After the heart breaking loss of our nearly 20 year old cat Rizzy in March this year, there was a huge gap in our family. We had always intended on getting another cat, but were considering a kitten...that was until one June evening when I was looking at the Cats Protection Bromley website, and fell in love instantly with Chester (then named Squeak). I immediately sent an enquiry to Jenni and her team about adopting him. Our home visit with Jenni was arranged, we were approved, and then within a week we got to meet Chester in person at his foster home. Although we knew he was wary of strangers, my husband and I were honoured to be accepted by Chester as he enjoyed tickles and strokes on the shelf of his enclosure...it was love at first purr! After a quick trip to buy some food, we were back to collect our new fluffy friend to take him back with us to his forever home. The first week Chester spent hiding under the wine rack, with many hours spent with us laying on the floor talking to him and giving him tickles. His curiosity soon got the better of him and he was adventuring around the whole house. Every new door/cupboard that opened, a little nose was there checking it out...and he even worked out how to open the wardrobe doors to have a snoop around on his own! It s only been a short time but Chester s personality and cheeky characteristics have already started to shine through. He loves being stroked and having his belly rubbed, and his waggy tail seems to have its own mind. Every day begins with cuddles on the bed before a day of adventuring inside the house, out in the garden and woodland next door. He has mastered his cat flap, and pops back regularly to check who s home to adore him, and have a quick snack on route. The cat food cupboard is guarded at tea time, until a willing human opens it, and Chester is always available to make sure the chicken or ham is suitable for packed lunch making. Evenings wouldn t be complete without playtime with the laser light, charging up and down the lounge and pouncing onto my husband s flip flops, which Chester is often found playing with or laying on top of! After a treat or two, its then time for cat dreams on the blanket on the sofa that Chester has claimed as his own personal spot. He is absolutely adorable, and has been the perfect addition to our family. We look forward to many years of fun, love and laughter to come...and maybe even Chester actually being picked up for a cuddle at some point in the future when he is ready!
Sandra and Pumpkin Pie Sandra is our treasurer and also one of the kitchen ladies if you ve sampled the chocolate cake, coffee and walnut cake and curried vegetable pasties at our sales, these are made by Sandra. She also paints a lot, is a big Harry Potter fan and an even bigger fan of Elton John. If she has any time left she also works as an accountant. I had not had a cat for about 18 months and then fate intervened. My previous two CP cats had both died of cancer and I was having a break. In fact, when I visited Sue, our main fosterer at the time, it was not on CP business at all. It was the end of October 2010 and she had so many cats there needing homes, including a black cat in the outside pen named Spider by our veterinary nurses. Usually the pen is reserved for cats with issues so I assumed this was the case here but in fact Sue said it was because he was placid and the other cats picked on him. She got him out and he just wandered around and let me pick him up and stroke him on his belly. To help Sue out a bit and to free up the pen, I agreed I would foster Spider until a new permanent home could be found. Two days later Sue brought him round to my house. His history was very sad as he had been reported to us by a member of the public who has seen him wandering the streets in an emaciated state. No owner came forward so we don t know whether he was dumped or just got lost. He clearly wasn t a feral given his very placid nature. He had spent quite a long time at our vets due to being severely malnourished and upset tummy issues and then about a month with Sue. I m not proud to say that at the time I thought that as he was just black experience tells us it would be more difficult to find him a home and in the past I had tabbies, a tortie and a ginger so I was biased as well. The first night I had him, I shut my bedroom door I didn t want to let him into my life to that extent given he was being fostered. He had other ideas and started meowing at the door and eventually to get a bit of peace I let him in. Not only did he want to get on the bed with me but IN the bed too, snuggling down for warmth. For about a month I kidded myself that I was still fostering him until a friend said, don t be daft, surely you can t part with him now? And if course she was right. So he started his new life with me and he got a new name, Pumpkin Pie. There is some logic to his name he is all black and his eyes can be orange in low light and these are Halloween colours and our paths crossed around Halloween when some people traditionally eat pumpkin pie. I carried on from the vets and Sue and continued to build him up again but had a few problems at the start he had two bouts of pancreatitis and also brought me several presents he had killed out and about- probably all as a result of his time living rough. I sorted out his diet and touch wood he is now well and a big boy. As you can see from the pictures he also laughs at my jokes. He is such good company, and even when he can go out prefers to sit or lie with me, especially if I am on the sofa watching TV. He is also very vocal, especially if I am upstairs when he comes in from the garden and can t see me. Where are you mummy? he shouts. He absolutely loves a brush, particularly on his cheeks and tummy. And a black cat is a very beautiful cat sleek shiny fur and when he closes his eyes all you see is a big shiny nose and long black whiskers. Plus of course he is the right colour when he travels with me on my broomstick to visit Hogwarts. Sandra
Pixie & Brandy. The story of this pair of cats dropped into my inbox quite unexpectedly. Usually we feature recently homed cats, but this adoption took place several years ago. Sue wanted to share her story of her two wonderful cats since they found their forever home with her. We adopted 2 lovely kittens from Bromley Cats Protection in November They had been socialised beautifully and although they were not related, they had grown up together and were good company for each other. They arrived with the names Betty and Harriette, but we renamed them Brandy (due to her wonderful tortoiseshell colouring) and Pixie (a perfect black, long coat with white bib, whiskers and paws). Having had several singleton rescue cats from Bromley CP over the previous 30 years, we were really looking forward to having 2 youngsters and were not disappointed. The chaos they could create, chasing each other up and down the stairs, jumping out from behind chairs and flinging ping pong balls round the hallway to each other! We could never quite work out who was the boss. Brandy was a very clumsy cat, probably due to her conformation - she had back legs like a hare, so sloped downwards, had great difficulty sitting comfortably in a typical cat position and tended to lose her back legs from under her when at speed on slippery surfaces. So her favourite position was sprawled on her back on your lap, all four paws in the air, or stretched out in her radiator basket. Pixie, in contrast, is a very petite, fast and wiggly little thing. Almost impossible to pick up unless she initiates it, but with the loudest purr I have ever heard, which starts the minute she is in your arms or on your lap. She is absolutely insistent when she wants that lap too - she will plonk herself in the middle of your work, lunch or newspaper and butt her head into your face until you pay attention. You can see that their antics were always driven by their tummies. You would think we never fed them, but they were wolfing down huge quantities of cat food as well. Once we learned to wire the cupboards together, religiously do all defrosting in the microwave, and they were old enough to explore outside, things calmed down. However, Brandy was ever the adventurous one - clambering awkwardly along the tops of fences and getting stuck up little trees in the gardens near our home. As you will have gathered by now, Brandy is no longer with us. Venturing too high up one wet and windy night, she must have slipped and fallen onto the path below, shattering her pelvis and spine irretrievably. We have lost cats to cancer and old age before, but never something so unexpected and in the prime of life. I know that those reading this article will recognise the awful sense of loss when a close cat friend passes on. Pixie was bereft for the first few weeks, clingy as could be and unwilling to go out at all. In a way we were good for each other during that time, and she regained her confidence more quickly than I did. I still have reservations unlocking the cat flap in the morning so she can come and go, enjoying the garden. If she fails to check back in after an hour or so I am out there rattling the kibble box like a mad woman! Pixie has turned all this to her advantage in some ways. She is now allowed to choose where to sleep at night, including on our bed - something we could never do when Brandy was alive as she had this internal alarm clock that resulted in loud wailing for breakfast at 5am on the dot. Both were wonderfully vocal too - it was like holding a conversation with them when they plopped through the cat flap to tell me about their latest exploits on the school playing field behind our home. They were partners in crime too. We were never sure who instigated it, but between them, in the first 2 months with us, they managed: 1) Opening the cupboards above the sink to get to the Dreamies, knocking the packets out onto the floor and shredding them so they could eat the entire contents. What do they put in Dreamies? It is clearly addictive. 2) Filching four half defrosted sausages from a covered Pyrex bowl on the kitchen work surface and eating the lot. 3) Taking a shine to Xmas pudding, even when it had a tiny horseshoe charm in it and was sitting in an egg cup covered in cling film, ready to be washed. 4) Jumping from the kitchen table onto the top of the wall cupboards, triggering the burglar alarm and then looking all innocent when our neighbours came in to investigate.
Pixie seems a bit more like the average teenage boy - happy to laze in bed till mid morning, and then wolf the entire contents of the fridge (or in her case 2 pouches). Pixie has also introduced us to the joys of mouse catching and she regularly brings us little presents. I m really not that keen, so my husband devised this fantastic method of catching mice without having to go too close. All you need is the cardboard centre of a roll of Xmas wrapping paper and a mug on the end. Present the open end of the tube to the mouse (where it is hiding under a table or behind a box) and it thinks it s a nice dark hole to hide in from the cat (who has usually lost almost all interest by this point). Once in the tube, invert it slowly, so the mouse ends up at the bottom in the mug. Lock cat in kitchen and take mouse out to a far flung corner of the garden and release! Job done. Reward cat with (you have guessed it) more Dreamies. Our second cat died at 21, and I am hoping that Pixie will be with us for just as long. She may be on her own, but she is a wonderful companion and I hope she is happy with human, rather than feline, company. We are so pleased that she was placed with us so a big thank you to Bromley Cats Protection! Sue Roaming in the Gloaming Karen, one of our dedicated supporters and volunteers, raised an amazing 230 in sponsorship for walking 75 miles in Scotland last month. She also helps run the jewellery stall at our indoor events and bakes wonderful cakes for sale on our refreshments table. Her husband makes a wicked, and very large cheese scone too! At one of the summer fairs I happened to mention to Rosemary that my husband Andrew and I were planning a walk in Scotland in the autumn. I ll give you a tenner. She said Get yourself sponsored. Great idea. And so it was, with a steely determination and plenty of socks, Andrew and I set off to walk 75 miles up the Great Glen, from Fort William to Inverness. Experience told us that this would be a wet affair. And when it wasn t raining it would be a midge-infested affair. Ask Jannette about killer Scottish midges even if you slap on a ton of bog myrtle and encase yourself from head to toe in plate armour they are guaranteed to find that one square millimetre of exposed skin to nibble. Were we afraid? Well yes actually because the walk would take us along the banks of Loch Ness and there is nothing more terrifying than the thought of encountering a coachload of tourists, wielding boxes of shortbread, CDs of bagpipe music and fluffy Nessie's in tartan bonnets. Trust me, meeting the monster was the least of our worries. But, as it happened, we had the most amazing weather. The sun shone every day. The trees were golden and the scenery spectacular. The midges were out in force but the bog myrtle kept most of them at bay. Neither did we see any tartan Nessie. However we did see the real thing. Take a look at the photograph above. There were no boats about or wildlife. What do you think? The walk was not as challenging as some we have completed but there were a few tough stretches and some real highs. At one point we were even above the clouds! And the saying red sky at night really was accurate glorious sunsets were followed by even sunnier days. Was it worth it? Absolutely. I don t need to tell you what a great job all our volunteers do and yet there still isn t a home for every puss or a friendly vet with a pair of snippers (ouch!) for every tom. Braving the midges, the Loch Ness monster and a week s worth of full Scottish breakfasts was the least we could do to help. Of course I am sure our cats Phoebe, Dave and Gus would have loved to have come too but frankly it all looked far too exhausting A big thank you to everyone who sponsored me. Karen
Reflecting on Past Times By Beryl Hauxwell I first joined Bromley Cats Protection in 1982 after answering an appeal in the Croydon Advertiser for volunteers. At the time there wasn t a Croydon Branch which meant that Bromley Branch often got involved with cat problems just over the border in the Croydon area. At first I helped out at jumble sales and bazaars and it was there that I met Brender and Mary Passande. I then progressed to home checking and fostering kittens. At the time I was single and living in a flat with my mother, as well as our cat and a West Highland Terrier. The kittens were kept in the spare room, but they had lots of attention and cuddles, and they also had playtime when they were allowed to have the run of the flat. We usually kept our cat, Inky, separate from the kittens as she did not like them and would spit and swear at them. But our little dog, Dougal, was wonderful with them, the result being that many of them were able to be successfully re-homed into households where there were dogs. I stopped fostering when I married my husband Brian in 1988 as we only had a small bungalow without a spare room, and my circumstances changed. It was then that I was asked if I would help a stalwart volunteer Win Virgo to keep the records and compile the homing list. These were the days before computers were widely used and it was quite a task. Each month Win gathered all the information about cats that needed our help and typed it out onto sheets which were passed to me to be transferred onto cards and filed. Obviously the files had to be regularly updated when the cats were re-homed or taken in by another charity etc. We did this job for several years until it was eventually computerised and Sue Cilyk took over. Win also ran the jewellery stall along with her friends Doreen and Ivy and I helped out occasionally when they were busy. After Ivy died I became a permanent helper on the stall. Win eventually began to suffer health problems and found the task too much. She asked me to take over the running of the stall which I have done ever since. I was also in charge of the sponsorship scheme for a number of years. Unfortunately I don t get to the sales so often these days as I suffer from fibromyalgia, a painful neurological condition. I do miss it, especially the outside events, but I have my trusty assistants Karen, Nicky and Lynne to man the stall for me and they do a great job. I still sort, clean and price all of the jewellery and a local jeweller, Warren Hall, helps me a great deal by giving advice on metals, stones and values. He buys some items from us himself. Bromley Cats Protection has been part of my life for so many years, and although I can t participate as much these days it is difficult to imagine life without it. Beryl would like to thank Therese Cumberlidge for kindly donating a precious gold St. Christopher that belonged to her late husband Jim, seen here relaxing with foster kittens. Therese and Jim were active members of our branch for many years. They used to foster cats and Jim was involved in several rescues. Jim was well known at our sales, where he earned the nickname Jumble Jim, but sadly he passed away ten years ago. Therese had given him the St Christopher as a wedding present when they were married, but she felt that now was the right time to part with it and that Jim would want it to be sold to help the cats. I am pleased to say that the St. Christopher has been sold for 95 which will be a big help and a fitting tribute to Jim. Thank you to everyone who has donated jewellery items for us to sell and thank you to the ladies on the jewellery stall, Karen, Nicky, Lynne and Joan. Keep up the good work ladies! Beryl
De Poezenboot DE POEZENBOOT (The Cat Boat) A unique cat rescue sanctuary in Amsterdam. A report by our Treasurer, Sandra. In September I visited Amsterdam for the 1 st time. It is a lovely city and should definitely be on your bucket list. Apart from the very pretty canals, rows of tall elegant narrow houses and lots of amazing art galleries it also has a very unique cat rescue sanctuary set afloat on a long narrow boat on the Singel canal. It was set up in 1968 by a lady called Henriette van Weelde who became know as the cat lady and she purchased the boat. It is run by volunteers and depends entirely on donations. It is kept scrupulously clean and the cats are very well cared for. Their aims are the same as ours rescuing, neutering and rehoming, and on average they rehome about cats a year. One of the cats there, a very friendly tabby and white had THE longest and thickest whiskers I have ever seen on a cat! His picture is above I hope you can see his glorious whiskers! If you would like to know more about this or pay them a visit see their website: Elsa s Story Denise adopted Elsa in September. She is a cat that has definitely landed on her paws in finding such a lovely home. In-between scratching the furniture, Elsa has put paw to paper I thought I would give you an update on my new home & new mum! I went out for the first time recently and I love being outside. I don't stray too far & keep popping back to check my new mum is still there! I like it best when she is out in the garden; I roll over for a tickle, then try & bite her - she falls for it every time. I have met my neighbours and they are nice too, apart from the dog I met, who tried to bark at me even though it was on a lead. I stood my ground and puffed right up with my best hissy face on. It worked a treat! I have made myself at home and I even have my own glass of water on the coffee table so I don't drink my mum s. I have a lovely bed to sleep in at night and every morning about 5am, I check my new mum is still alive by wiping my nose on her face and she doesn t mind!!!! I am growing in confidence every day and love to climb on top of the fridge freezer to watch what s going on. Now, where is that Christmas tree?
Special cats needing homes Buddy was found abandoned, in a taped up box in a car park. He is a lovely friendly laid back big boy, who enjoys strokes and attention, and is aged about 10 years old. Buddy is a healthy cat, but does have Cerebellar Hypoplasia (CH), which means that his head trembles slightly when excited, and his back legs are a bit uncoordinated when he walks. CH does not require any medication and he would have been born with it, so it will not get worse or affect his lifespan, and Buddy doesn't seem to be bothered by his condition. Lydia is a beautiful and playful young cat. Poor Lydia was living as a stray and caring for her kittens outside before coming into branch care. Due to this Lydia was very timid when she first arrived at our home, and spent her first couple of weeks hiding. Since then she has blossomed in confidence and now enjoys strokes and playing, but her new owners would need to show patience at the start, as she will need time to gain confidence in a new home. Because of this she would only suit a quieter household with older children or an adult only home. If you are interested in any of these delightful cats, please call Jenni on You can see videos of Buddy, Lydia, and other CP cats on our new YouTube channel (go to and search for our channel Bromley Cats Protection ) Please help us recruit fosterers On the following page you will see a poster encouraging people to think about fostering. We would be grateful if you could consider putting the poster on the noticeboard at your workplace, club meeting room, church, etc. Thank you!
