MID-AFTERNOON SLUMP? HAVE AN EGG! A study has found that protein and not sugar activates the cells responsible for keeping us awake and burning calories. Wakefulness and energy expenditure rely on "orexin cells," which secrete a stimulant called orexin/hypocretin in the brain. Electrical impulses emitted by orexin cells stimulate wakefulness and tell the body to burn calories. It was explored whether dietary nutrients alter those impulses and discovered that amino acids stimulate orexin cells. Previous work by the group found that glucose blocks orexin cells (which was cited as a reason for after-meal sleepiness), and so the researchers also looked at interactions between sugar and protein. They found that amino acids stop glucose from blocking orexin cells (in other words, protein negated the effects of sugar on the cells). For now, research suggests that if you have a choice between jam on toast, or egg whites on toast, go for the latter! Even though the two may contain the same number of calories, having a bit of protein will tell the body to burn more calories out of those consumed. Source: University of Cambridge

RED FEET by Aviculture Europe In legend, there is nothing more beautiful to a pigeon fancier than the story of the dove which brought to Noah the message that the great flood had subsided. According to the Arabs, this bird, after carrying to the Ark the olive branch signifying that the waters were falling, flew away on a second trip, from which it returned with traces of red mud on its feet, thereby proving that it had been able to alight on the ground; and, as a result of this information, Noah prayed that the feet of these birds might forever continue to be of that reddish colour. Noah's prayer must have been heard, for the feet of all pigeons to this day are red! Source: National Geographic, January Right: A photo of an intense red Steiger Cropper, made during the past Donau Bussen Show (D), with a fiery red leg colour, as in principle all pigeons have. For completeness: Ideally, this pigeon should stand more upright, so almost vertically. But at the moment the bird was too excited. Photo Mick Bassett (D) But do really all pigeons have red legs...?
That red leg colour doesnot hold for youngsters, it comes after the moult, i.e. as their juvenile eye colour has brightened and their juvenile plumage has moulted, then the legs slowly change from dark to bright red. The latter is easily seen in this old photo from 1982 of a young blue black barred Valenciana Cropper hen, made by ANC of Benten. The eye colour is not yet bright orange / red and the legs are a bit dark. Nevertheless, some pigeons do have a darker leg colour, also as adult birds. Rafael Yuste Lopez, a well-known Spanish pigeon breeder from Seville confirmed to us that the true old Cropper breeds from Jaén (Spain) have mulberry-coloured legs. That is something we still see today in the pure Gorguero Cropper and Jiennense Cropper. The photo on the left was taken at Jos van Dorp s, this is an adult Jiennense Cropper (born this year in spring), clearly showing the darker legs.

A BRAKEL SCULPTURE With thanks to Tinka Pittoors and Jan Schaareman Photos by: Tinka Pittoors In late September the Belgian town of Brakel unveiled a 4 meter sculpture of Brakel poultry by artist Tinka Pittoor. Prior to starting her commission Tina met with several members of the Brakel club and visited one of the breeders. She noticed the particular pride with which the club members and breeders discussed the Brakel s uniformity and presence. Tinka: The chickens had gathered at the end of the coop, they were cautious and curious at the same time. Their lopped combs made them look a little haughty. The rooster on the other hand was much more self-assured and in control. This tension between control and action, curiosity and caution has guided my approach to the project. It was clear from the start that the sculpture would be a composition and would capture the movement which Tinka felt suited the subject matter: a tribute to our living heritage. The spiral spring represents the legs or the perch the chickens rest on and their active nature. The Brakels typical feather pattern was created by lasering a white plate which made the Brakel s black feather pattern appear transparent.
The combs were attached separately and the movement of chickens extends that of the spiral spring. The chickens move in the breeze creating a dynamic display and once more accentuating their active nature. Surely you ll agree with us that it has turned out to be a spectacular sculpture. A real attention grabber for next year when Brakel hosts the European Brakel Show. Website Tinka Pittoors:
MOULTING By: Ron. Feathers are largely made up of protein. When chickens moult new feathers develop. These too will consist largely of protein. Feeding chickens additional protein assists with the moulting process. Animal proteins are preferred as chickens can digest these easier than plant proteins. Digesting plant proteins requires more energy and this is not desirable, especially not during autumn. Some examples of animal proteins that are suitable for chickens are: mealworms, Amphipods, raw mince, boiled eggs etc. Recommended article: Photo: Monique de Vrijer.
