A word from the editor. Dear Reader, You are about to read the June issue, bursting with hobby news from the Netherlands, from other European countries and even from other continents, because there is also some news from Australia and New Zealand. Isn t it wonderful that we can exchange experiences with other breeders in this way! Although it still remains very pleasant to 'just' go and visit each other. Each year some pigeon breeders from various countries meet in Solfrank's Pigeons Museum in Germany; also, the famous pigeon breeder Josip Pekanoviç, in Serbia, regularly invites some foreign breeders to his home, and he recently sent us some pictures which we are pleased to be able to share with you. In your summer holiday, it might be a fun idea to arrange a visit to a breeder - by appointment of course; addresses are often available on the internet through the websites of the specialty club of the breed in which you are interested. And since you are online, do visit the websites of our advertisers; just click their logos on the right side of the home site. Without their financial support - and that of our donors - we would not be able to maintain this magazine! We wish you pleasant reading and if you have anything to tell us, please contact the chief editor at redactie@aviculture-europe.nl For those who have not done so already: please subscribe to our newsletter by sending us your address, so that you will be automatically informed about the publishing of each new issue. With thanks to all contributors, donors and advertisers, on behalf of the team of Aviculture Europe, Nico van Benten
Champion Show Press report 6 June 2013 We are happy to present the three new members of the Executive Board of the Champion Show Committee: President Aad Stehmann Secretary Rinus Mos Treasurer Evert van de Waerdt The entire team is very eager to organize the Champion Show 2014 for all breeds, with the usual support of Ornithophilia and Avicultura. It goes without saying that the Champion Show will proceed along the same successful lines as previous shows. This means full attention will be given to the KLN Grand National Show for rabbits, guinea pigs and small rodents and to the NBS Grand National for Fancy Pigeons (the NBS is celebrating its 90th anniversary) both of which will be housed at the Champion Show. The Champion Show 2014 will be held on 23, 24 en 25 January 2014 again at the Home Boxx Exhibition Center in Nieuwegein, the Netherlands. We will keep you updated. On behalf of the Champion Show, Gerard de Bruin.
BREEDERS MEET IN SOMBOR Every year pigeon breeders from different countries meet in Sombor, Serbia, at Josip Pekanovic s. This year, on 9 and 10 May again several known pigeon fanciers from Norway, Sweden, France, Hungary and Serbia gathered at the house of Josip. At a full table, in good atmosphere, it is a great pleasure to discuss different ideas on pigeon breeding and exchange pigeons literature. Right: Josip Pekanoviç (l) and Jan Oksnes from Norway. Another event where international pigeon breeders meet, is the annual meeting in Sollfrank's Pigeon Museum in Nuremberg, Germany. By publishing our online magazine on old livestock poultry & pigeon breeds, Aviculture Europe also hopes to contribute our mite in bringing together people from different continents which are taking care of poultry and pigeons. In this way we all can share our hobby with millions of fans worldwide.

RARE ANTIQUE PAINTING Until now, one suspects that it is painted by Gillis Coninxloo, who lived from 1544 to 1607 and has been one of the most important landscape painters of his time. One therefore finds it very unique that there exists also a poultry painting by this painter. This is still under review by experts. It is known that (only) the rich had such paintings hanging in their kitchens, where the meals were prepared by the staff. These kitchens looked very different from what we are accustomed to today. The painting is painted on an oak panel, unframed dimensions are 56 cm wide and 42 cm high. Probably this painting is from a counterpart, ie a set of two paintings that are painted to be shown together. On the other painting a rooster is likely to be painted. The hen and rooster were likely to face each other, with the same objects used (mirrored) in both paintings and / or the birds making eye contact. Do you have extra information about this painting or painter? Or are you interested in this painting? Please contact Den Hartog Antiques in Lexmond, Netherlands via the website

CORRECTION We received quite a few responses of observant readers about a wrong picture in our last report of the Champion Show. In the previous issue of Aviculture Europe, in the article describing the opening ceremony of the last Champion Show and the awarding of the grand prize winners, we included a wrong picture. C.P.M. v/d Bemd was the winner of the Grand Prix of the Netherlands with the Reserve Best Young Cock in Show, however, we included a photo of a Berlin long-beaked Tumbler, whereas his winning pigeon was an English Magpie Tumbler. Also a Red one and longbeaked, but something quite different. Our apologies for this. Fortunately Mrs. Wilma Taks kindly supplied us with a photo of the winning pigeon, Thanks Wilma, also on behalf of Mr v/d Bemd and our readers! Left: English Magpie Tumbler, red, M/Y. 97 points. Owner: C.P.M. v.d. Bemd. Winner Grand Prix of the Netherlands.

CHOOK CHOOK Source: Museum Victoria, Australia The old Parlour game titled 'Chook-Chook is based on the production and marketing of eggs. This game is a bit like Monopoly, not trading or developing properties, but a business trading account between players, their stock being various breeds of fowls, the eggs from which at varying prices count in the competition; the player who makes the most money during 12 months being the winner. The game comprises a deck of cards, instructions, monthly price list, "setting cards", scoring card and original box. 49 cards with a variety of images including 'A Goose' and 'Water Glass Tin' but the majority have information about the monthly egg production, by the dozen, of specific types of hen (i.e. Langshan Hens) for a whole year. The manufacturer is unknown. Date Manufactured: circa It was available for sale in Australia, and probably the United Kingdom. If you'd like your own game of Chook-Chook, the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine holds a scan of the cards once hosted by the former Melbourne City Museum. The written instructions comprise a list of directions on how to play the game and the significance of each card. Don t forget to download the scan of one crucial card the one that tells you how much your eggs sell for each month. You can also download that card here. Image: Joanne Ely & Sally Jones

SPECIAL COLOURS IN KASSEL TUMBLERS. Text: Gerard Adriaanse (NL) At the Third Regional Show in Dortmund held in the first weekend of January 2013 a good entry of Kassel Tumblers was presented for exhibition. In the Netherlands this breed is very rarely seen and then only in the colours Black, Red and Yellow but in Dortmund also on show were Browns, Dilute Brown barred, Ash Red (Mealy), Ash Yellow (Cream) barred, Blue and Dilute Blue barred. Especially in type and stance these birds were on a Parr with the more established colours, they even had good head and beak shape, off-course there were a few minor improvements desired as in head length and fullness of face, also improvement in beak colour, although this is not a major concern. The few crested examples were also very striking and breed typical birds. Due to the added variation in colours now available hopefully this breed will become more popular and attract new fanciers, this beautiful breed is certainly worth far more attention. These photos were taken at the 3th Revierschau; both pigeons have been bred by Dieter Mlyner. With our thanks to Mark Brinkwirth and Uwe Held.
TWO YOUNG IN ONE EGG! By: Uwe Held (Germany) I had been amazed about the size of the two eggs! One proved not to be fertilized but in the other was this surprise! Upon hatching - April 1, but really no joke! - I have not really helped, but when I saw the egg pipped on both sides, I opened it a little further. The next day they both had hatched by themselves. Initially, both young were alive, but later one was dead in the nest. The other little hen looked very lively. Right: The egg with the then still alive! - young. The father of the twins is a red English Magpie (see photo next page). The mother is a proven white, who had laid such a large, unfertilized egg already twice this year.
Unfortunately, the second young died on April 4. It was fed by the parents until the last moment, but just did not grow. I took some pictures; right on the photo you can see a young which was born one day later; see the difference in size! In previous reports the twin pigeons were always dead. It is a miracle that these two lived a few hours or days. Could it be that these twins have some gene that prevents them surviving...? A few weeks later I got one of my friends in the fancy, B. Feiler, to send me a few pictures of a twin-egg. These were Genuine Homer eggs. Both young didn t hatch, and the 2nd egg was not fertilized. The egg was not pipped and the breeder took it out of the nest after 19 days incubation and opened it himself. See photo below. Above: The red cock on the nest. Below, in comparison, left is an egg of a Modern English Game Bantam, in the middle the egg with the twins and to the right the unfertilized egg of normal size.
NPA AWARD FOR BILL BURNSIDE For what he does year after year in Florida USA, promoting pigeons and the hobby, one of our Team, Bill Burnside, was awarded the NPA Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2013 NPA Grand National at Vancouver, Washington. Bill was very surprised: I m just a member who does the pigeon/hobby promotion anyway/anyplace I can. For me it is fun and gratifying. The NPA award is of etched glass, it states: William (Bill) Burnside, 2013, National Pigeon Association Lifetime Achievement Award In recognition for all you do to promote the pigeon hobby
Bill is a pigeon fancier educator who presents beautiful fancy and homing pigeons to schools and other organizations in the State of Florida. He has been doing this since Presentations in the past have been conducted at several schools for the Great American Teach-in, and other school dates. 20 THE FAMILY TREE OF THE DOMESTIC PIGEON By: Josip Pekanovic, Thanks to ideal climatic and natural conditions, development of the first human civilization started in Mesopotamia. These conditions were suitable for the development of the Rock Dove which became one of the first domestic animals. As civilization was developing, pigeon breeding was developing too. Many explorers tried to answer questions like: When did that process begin? How did the breeds of pigeon came into being, and in which order? Turning back deeper into history, research was more and more difficult. Some authors managed to construct parts of the family tree, for example Darwin, but never completed the scheme because the oldest root was missing, the tree could not be completed. DARWIN S PIGEON FAMILY TREE
During many years I have explored what could be the main thread which could give the answer to these questions. I was looking for old breeds whose roots were connected to the Rock Dove and I found out that it could only be the Archangel pigeon (Gimpel). Its origin looks like the following: THE ROCK DOVE> THE SUMERIAN PIGEON> THE BABYLONIAN PIGEON> THE ILLYRIAN PIGEON> THE ARCHANGEL PIGEON Click here to download a larger photo of the family tree Comparing the first and the last, we see great similarity, except in colour of plumage. The distance between them is over 7,000 years that makes similarity more fascinating. All the other breeds easily fitted into this vertical and gave us the Family Tree of Domestic Pigeons. In the first generation we have six of the oldest breeds, which gave us groups of breeds even up to today s fifth and sixth generation. Left: Rock pigeon. Photos: AE. Right: Archangel.

HOW TO GET MORE PULLETS THAN COCKERELS From: Tricks of Poultry Trade, Reece Victor Hicks, 1909 Keep your hens as quiet as possible. It is claimed that mating an old cock bird of two or three years old to fifteen or more vigorous pullets will produce more pullets than cockerels. The eggs will not be so fertile as a smaller mating. Another thing, eggs hatched late in the season will produce more pullets than those hatched earlier. The feed should be very high in nitrogenous feed like wheat, meat, linseed meal, etc. Feed very little corn and all the green bone or meat scraps that they will eat without causing bowel trouble. Note by the editor: Do you think it is worth a try? We would certainly appreciate if you would keep us updated with the results! redactie@aviculture-europe.nl Photo: Bobo Athes.

COLOURED RACING PIGEONS As in several other European countries - such as Ireland and Germany - also in the Netherlands is more interest in Coloured Racing Pigeons. At the Pigeon Spring Exchange Expo Houten, in March 2013, several of these birds in special colours were on display. The breeders hope that there is enough interest, so that the coloured racing pigeon can become a true exhibition pigeon, complete with a standard description and admitted in the National Fancy Pigeon Standard, with maybe even its own specialty club. For further information please contact Mr Jos Kleijnen, through redactie@aviculture-europe.nl
HOLIDAY PHOTOS Freddy Bettink (NL) sent us these photos from Thailand, taken in the neighbourhood of the beautiful temple in Pattaya. The many cocks were fairly identical, but one (see next page) was small and had very short legs, as in Japanese bantams.
Did you too take photos of poultry or pigeons during your holidays abroad? Please do send them to us!
