1 WEEKLY POULTRY NEWS 21 th April 2018 THE POULTRY ASSOCIATION OF ZAMBIA INTERNATIONAL NEWS EU BANS CHICKEN IMPORTS FROM SEVERAL SUPPLIERS IN BRAZIL Europe s decision to ban meat imports from several Brazilian suppliers affects 30 to 35% of the country s exports to the bloc and will force companies to find new markets while officials work to reverse the measure, Brazil s Agriculture Minister said. The European Union on Thursday suspended imports of Brazilian meat products, mostly poultry, in a move that affected 20 plants in the country that had been authorized to export to the EU, according to a European Commission statement. I was in Europe last week and we were waiting for a definition of how many, if any plants, were going to be delisted, Minister Blairo Maggi told reporters in Paraná after the measure was unveiled. We need to start talks to reestablish these plants as soon as possible, he said. Maggi noted the Brazilian government would request that a trade mission be allowed in Europe to negotiate a reversal of the measure. Meanwhile, he said, Brazilian companies will have to search for new markets to quickly substitute these exports. The ban also dealt a blow to Brazil s largest chicken processor, BRF SA, which had 12 plants delisted by the EU after its involvement in a food safety investigation. Earlier in the week the Brazilian government threatened to file a complaint to the World Trade Organization (WTO) to discuss its claims that the EU chicken import quotas breached global trade rules. The government affirmed its intention after the EU decision on Thursday, claiming European trade restrictions were not a health issue. Source: LOCAL NEWS CHINGOLA HOLDS ITS AGM AS ROSS BREEDERS CONDUCTS POULTRY TRAINING The Chingola poultry associations of zambia held its annual general meeting yestaday the 19 th This was a elctive AGM which saw the incumbart chairperson Mr. Kayamba retaining his position togetyjher with the treasurer Mr. Chanda as well as the Vice Treasurer mrs Napemba. The annual general meeting took place immediately after the poultry trainings which was organized by Ross Breeders. The training forcused mainly on improving poultry farming as a business, winter broiler production, feeding and biosecurity. The training was attended by 110 poultry farmers from Chingola. The poultry training in Chingola is part of many trainings Ross Breeders is conducting on the copperbelt this week and next week. April

2 ZAMBIA'S KWACHA SHOWED SOME WEAKENING SIGNS The Zambian kwacha is likely to hold firm next week supported by hard currency sales from companies preparing to pay taxes and other month-end obligations. commercial banks quoted the currency of Africa s No.2 copper producer at per dollar, stronger than a close of last Thursday. It should hold the latest gains as we approach the end of the month when dollar supply increases, one commercial bank trader said, referring to the kwacha. Source: Bank of Zambia PRICES FOR THE DOCs REMAINS FLAT The average day old chick prices remained flat within the week and are still trading at ZMK The challenges with chick distributions has been reported in a number of districts. However things are likely to improve in the next few weeks as the parent stock comes into lay.pullets are also trading at ZMK The graph below shows the national average price trend for the broiler day old chicks. Please note also that the prices of day old chick may differ depending on a number of factors such as the distance and the source supplying the day old chicks.

3 Source: PAZ NATIONAL RETAIL AVERAGE LIVE BROILER RECORDS SOME MOVEMENTS The national average prices for the broiler chickens continue to record some upward movements during the course of the week. The national live broiler bird prices are averaging ZMK36.39 from ZMK recorded last week. Meanwhile the prices for the X-layer prices remained flat during the course of the week, averaging at ZMK35.63 compared with ZMK35.63 recorded last week. In the same vain, the prices for the free range chickens averaged ZMK which is the same price as obtained last week. Source: Poultry Association of Zambia

4 AVERAGE WHOLE DRESSED CHICKEN REMAINS UNCHANGED There were no movements on prices for the frozen chickens during the course of this. The average price for the whole frozen chicken in Lusaka is still trading at about ZMK21.60 which is the same price as last week. The chicken sizes are ranging between 1.2kg to 1.8kg in different stores. Please note that the prices are obtained from Pick n Pay, Shoprite, Zambeef, Melisa supermarket and Cheers Stores. Some brands have continued with price promotions. Different outlets have different pricing models hence the figures displayed is an average price for all the sampled chainstores. Source: Poultry Association of Zambia AVERAGE PRICES FOR THE POINT OF LAY REMAINS UNCHANGED The prices for the point of lay showed remained unchanged during the course of the week. The average prices is still ranging between ZMK65 to ZMK74 per bird. Yielding Tree, one of the major suppliers of point of lay is offering good incentives to the farmer based on volumes. Rosedale Farm in Lusaka is also offering competitive prices for the point of lay and discounts for big volumes. Bird is ready first week of May at Rosedale far. For those on the Copperbelt, quantum foods have point of lay for sale at competitive prices. For the beginners who are interested in getting battery cages, cage price ranges between ZMK2700 to ZMK8000 depending on the capacity and also the sources of the cages.

5 NATIONAL RETAIL AVERAGE EGG PRICES REMAINS UNCHANGED The retail egg prices remained unchanged during the course of the week. The retail prices in markets that are operating within Lusaka averages between ZMK 24 to ZMK26 per tray for large eggs, and medium eggs while smaller eggs are trading between ZMK19 and ZMK22 farm gate price while pullet eggs are trading at ZMK18 per tray. Retail prices in some Chainstores have also been maintained, averaging between ZMK24 to ZMK36 per tray of 30 eggs depending on the supplier and packaging. Broiler starter is still trading at ZMK178.90, broiler Grower is also tradig at ZMK while finisher is also averaging ZMK In the same vain, the layer feed prices remained unchanged. Pullet starter trading at ZMK , pullet grower is still trading at ZMK Developer is still trading at ZMK 136 while Layer Mash is avaraging ZMK per 50kg bag. For those compounding their own poultry feed the avarage prices have have also stayed flat.
