1 WEEKLY POULTRY NEWS 28 th MAY 2018 THE POULTRY ASSOCIATION OF ZAMBIA INTERNATIONAL NEWS WEST AFRICA TRAINING PROGRAM FOCUSES ON BUILDING POULTRY CAPACITY WASHINGTON, D.C., U.S. The U.S. Grains Council (USGC) and the Moroccan Federation of Poultry Associations (FISA) is working with West African regional producers to learn how to improve their businesses, which could include imports of feed grains and co-products from sources like the United States. In May, USGC and the FISA sponsored the first of three training programs scheduled this year for West African poultry producers, held in Casablanca, Morocco. This training program brought together 13 poultry producers from Benin and Togo for a comprehensive training in broiler management and layer production techniques, coupled with practical hands-on training at FISA s poultry training center. Trainees also participated in on-site visits to commercial broiler farmers, feed mills and slaughterhouse facilities. Driven by changing demographics, urbanization and changing consumption behaviors, a more modern and professional poultry industry is forming in Africa, said Katy Wyatt, USGC manager of global strategies, who attended the program. These trainings provide West African poultry producers with a vision for future development around which the industry can rally. According to the USGC, more than half of global population growth by 2050 is expected to occur in Africa, with West Africa alone expected to account for 15% of this growth. Poultry remains the leading source of meat protein there, meaning modernizing and industrializing poultry farms in West Africa is an important component of food security. The 2018 training series follows a USGC-led effort last year to engage the West African poultry industry, with the help of a grant from the North Dakota Corn Utilization Council. More than 35 poultry producers from Guinea, Senegal and C ote D Ivoire attended training in Morocco in The week-long trainings are customized to the requirements of the individual countries, including pullet management, egg layer production and technical and economic management of broiler production.

2 The USGC, in partnership with FISA, will organize two more training programs in 2018 to continue this effort, with the next program scheduled for July for 12 poultry producers and technicians from Burkina Faso and Mali. The goal of the training programs is to build broader capacity on the continent, supporting local producers as part of a long-term market development effort for U.S. grain exports into West Africa. USGC said sales already have started to Senegal and Nigeria, which imported 245,000 tonnes (9.6 million bushels) of U.S. corn in the marketing year. These trainings provide producers with the opportunity to learn from leading poultry experts in Morocco, Wyatt said. Expanded engagement in 2018 will provide West African poultry producers the technical skills necessary to improve their poultry operations, becoming examples of modern production practices and improved farm management practices in the region. Source: LOCAL NEWS ZAMBIA'S KWACHA WEAKENS The kwacha is expected to remain on the back foot versus the dollar in the coming week due to increasing demand for hard currency. The commercial banks quoted kwacha by end of Friday at ZMK10.25 from the average of ZMK10.20 recorded at the end of last week. 3 PRICES FOR THE DOCs REMAINS UNCHANGED The average day old chick prices remained unchanged within the week and are still trading at ZMK 6.39 per day old chick. Pullets are also trading at ZMK Please note also that the prices of day old chick may differ depending on a number of factors such as the distance and the source supplying the day old chicks, the council levies in certain areas among others issues. The graph below shows the national average price trend for the broiler day old chicks. Source: PAZ NATIONAL RETAIL AVERAGE LIVE BROILER RECORDS SOME MOVEMENTS The national average prices for the broiler chickens continue to record some upward movements during the course of the week. The national live broiler bird prices are averaging ZMK36.51 from ZMK recorded last week. In the same vain X-layer prices are now averaging at ZMK35.65 compared with ZMK35.63 recorded last week. The prices for the free range chickens averaged ZMK compared with ZMk56.00 recorded last week.

4 Source: Poultry Association of Zambia AVERAGE WHOLE DRESSED CHICKEN RECORDS SOME MINOR REDUCTION There were some movements on prices for the frozen chickens during the course of the week. The average price for the whole frozen chicken in Lusaka is now trading at about ZMK21.54, down by ZMK0.24 compared with the prices obtained last the week before. The reduction is due to promotions being undertaken in one of the chainstores. The lowest price in some chain stores is trading at ZMK per kg while the highest is on ZMK per kg. The chicken sizes are ranging between 1.2kg to 1.6kg in different stores. Please note that the prices are obtained from Pick n Pay, Shoprite, Zambeef, Melisa supermarket and Cheers Stores. Some brands have continued with price promotions. Different outlets have different pricing models hence the figures displayed is an average price for all the sampled chainstores. 5 AVERAGE PRICES FOR THE POINT OF LAY REMAINS UNCHANGED The prices for the point of lay remained unchanged during the course of the week. The average price is range between ZMK65 to ZMK74 per bird. Yielding Tree, one of the major suppliers of point of lay is offering good incentives to the farmer based on volumes. Base farm pullet rearers also have birds available at competitive prices For the beginners who are interested in getting battery cages, cage price ranges between ZMK2700 to ZMK8000 depending on the capacity and also the sources of the cages. NATIONAL RETAIL AVERAGE EGG PRICES REMAINS UNCHANGED The retail egg prices remained unchanged during the course of the week. The retail prices in markets that are operating within Lusaka averages between ZMK to ZMK26.86 per tray for large eggs, and medium eggs while smaller eggs are trading between ZMK19.3 and ZMK22.4 farm gate price. Pullet eggs are trading at ZMK18 per tray. Further, retail prices in some Chainstores have also remained unchanged, averaging between ZMK25 to ZMK36 per tray of 30 eggs depending on the supplier and packaging. The change in prices is due the price adjustments by one of the stockfeed millers On the other hand the layer feed prices remained unchanged. Pullet starter is still trading at ZMK , pullet grower is trading at ZMK Developer is trading at ZMK 136 while Layer Mash is avaraging ZMK per 50kg bag. For those compounding their own poultry feed the avarage prices have have also stayed flat.
