1 When to Find the irds in Skåne y Jesper Segergren (compilation), Ola Elleström (adaption) and Tommy Holmgren (updating) Is April too early for Thrush Nightingales? How many Shorttoed Treecreepers have een seen in Skåne and when do they usually turn up? When is the est time to see a Eurasian Spoonill? Can Lesser Whitethroat winter here? We have compiled a tale to answer questions like these as a tool to help understand the situation when it comes to ird occurrence in Skåne and also to satisfy irdwatchers of an inquiring mind. Most Thrush Nightingales arrive in May. Photo: Mikael Arinder/Skånska ilder. 9
2 When to Find the irds in Skåne The tale includes all the species occurring in Skåne up until and including the year 003, classified as spontaneous y the Swedish Ornithological Society s Rarities Committee (44 in total). Records after 003 will e found in the Appendix on page 7. A ar chart shows the frequency of the species during each month. The wider the ar, the more common the species (see next page for key to symols). The tale is ased on the numer of individual irds present in the countryside in general, ut it also tries to take into consideration the likelihood of finding the species in its natural environment. Thus, some species that are numerous y comparison, ut for one reason or another are harder to spot, will e indicated y a narrower ar. Species that occur irregularly in the countryside, such as seairds and crossills, are represented in the tale y a arwidth that corresponds to the average appearance. In certain years, some species such as Pomarine Skua and Longtailed Skua, can e consideraly more numerous than the tale suggests. Also note that the width of the ar corresponds to the occurrence of the species at some point during the given period. During the last week in April, a first wave of tropical migrants tends to arrive in the countryside, and their occurrence during a few days will then reflect in a arcode for the whole month. The tale shows the national threat status as well as the reeding status for certain species (see next page for key to symols). In cases where 0% or more of the total Swedish reeding population of one particular species is found in Skåne alone, this will e indicated. The tale can e regarded as a support tool for your irdwatching and also as a source for curious minds. The tale has een ased on pulished data which in turn has een adapted according to the authors own personal experiences, and is therefore sujective (ut nevertheless very useful for irdwatchers). The Little Gree can e seen in Skåne the year around. Photo: John Larsen. 0
3 When to Find the irds in Skåne Key to symols National threat status RE CR EN DD Regionally extinct Critically endangered Endangered Vulnerale Near Threatened Data Deficient S reeding status >00 reeding pairs <00 reeding pairs () a few pairs reeding irregularly not reeding in Skåne 0% or more of the Swedish reeding population occurs in Skåne The three specifications of the aove category are: Dunlin of the suspecies schinzii Chiffchaff of the suspecies collyita Common Redpoll of the suspecies caaret Occurrence Common/relatively common Large chance of finding species in appropriate environment. Infrequent/rare ut regular Normally requires a it of luck or optimal weather conditions (relevant to e.g. seairds) to find the species. Occasional, ut in many cases annual At least 00 irds in total have een recorded of the species up to and including 007. Some reeding irds with a very wide local distriution are also included in this category. Occasional Normally a maximum of 5 records in each month. At least 00 irds recorded of the species in total up to and including 007. Numer of irds recorded monthly up to and including 007, ut <00 in total. The figure relates to month of discovery. If several individuals have een oserved together these will e shown in the tale as one record.
