2 A EWORMING PROGRAM ESIGNE TO FIT EACH HORSE S LIFE INIVIUALIZE EWORMING: HOW IT S ONE Evaluating parasite exposure is not a simple task. There are many things that make up a horse s identity; it s your job to make sure parasites aren t one of them. Individualized deworming (I) is an advanced approach to parasite control, based on the knowledge that every horse has a Horse owners need your help in evaluating fecal egg counts (FEC) and risks for each animal. Your involvement ensures the proper steps are taken to create an individualized deworming plan that provides the most effective treatment possible. unique set of parasite risks. The following steps have been communicated With your help, horse owners can develop and implement an I plan that helps each horse to horse owners to further explain your role in developing a custom strategy. reach its optimum health. STEP 1 STEP 2 STEP 3 STEP 4 ESTABLISH BASELINE EGG COUNTS The Fecal Egg Count (FEC) is the first important step in developing an evidence-based individualized deworming plan. Prior to deworming, perform a quantitative FEC to determine the horse s intestinal parasite status. FECs should be evaluated annually. Horses at higher risk of parasite exposure should have more frequent FECs. MEASURE SHEING LEVELS Perform FECs on the rest of the herd (or 10 percent if herd is large) to determine parasite shedding levels. Assessing the shedding level of individuals within the herd identifies horses that pose the greatest risk of exposing others to parasite infection. Less than 200 eggs per gram may indicate a low risk horse. Greater than 500 eggs per gram may indicate a higher risk horse. KNOW THE VARIABLES Risk evaluation is integral to creating successful deworming strategies. All horses carry unique risk factors that affect their vulnerability to parasites. In addition to individual and herd FECs, evaluate the parasite exposure risks present in the horse s environment before initiating a new deworming program. ETERMINE THE HORSE S I Evaluate FECs, shedding levels and risks for each horse, herd and farm to customize an I plan that fits each animal. Monitor the effectiveness of the I plan with regular FECs and risk factor evaluations. If parasite resistance is suspected, evaluate the efficacy of individual anthelmintic products by performing a Fecal Egg Reduction Test (FERT). Fecal Egg Reduction Tests (FERT) are performed by obtaining a baseline FEC, administering a deworming product, and then obtaining a second FEC days after deworming. Fecal Egg Reduction (%)=(pre-treatment FEC - post-treatment FEC)/pre-treatment FEC X 100. A < 90% reduction in FEC following deworming indicates parasite resistance to the anthelmintic product currently being used.

3 PARASITE RISK CHECKLIST Part of what makes the I system so effective is the attention given to the unique conditions affecting each horse s parasite risk. The following checklist includes factors considered in a typical risk assessment: AGE OF HORSE LOCAL CLIMATE CYCLE MANURE REMOVAL PASTURE ROTATION PROBLEM PARASITES TRANSPORTATION HORSE ENSITY TYPE OF PASTURE LUSH OVERGRAZE RY LOT MIXTURE MANAGEMENT INIVIUAL STALLS OR PAOCKS INIVIUAL PASTURES SMALL GROUP PASTURES LARGE GROUP PASTURES FEEING INIVIUALLY OR IN GROUPS OFF THE GROUN ON THE GROUN USE OF HORSE RACE OR PERFORMANCE SHOW PLEASURE RIING COMPANION I PROVIES CUSTOMIZE LEVELS OF PROTECTION epending on the outcome of a risk assessment and your recommendation, horse owners have been informed that their plan may fall into one of the following four levels of I: ANTHELCIE EQ Q U ES T /Q U ES T PLUS WINteR spring summer STRONGI PASTE I N I V I U A L I Z E ecember JANuARY FeBRuARY MARCH APRIL MAY JuNe JuLY S T R O N GI C AuGust I RECOMMENE GUIELINES FOR A HORSE MILE-AGE ANIMAL FE OFF THE GROUN LOW STOCKING ENSITY CLIMAtes CLIMAtes AILY MANURE REMOVAL PASTURE SHARE WITH CATTLE, SHEEP OR GOATS KEPT IN STALL OR RY LOT MILE-AGE ANIMAL FE OFF THE GROUN ANtHeLCIe eq MOERATE STOCKING ENSITY LOW RIsK MeIuM RIsK <200 epg epg Quest OR Quest PLus OR strongi PAste* ROTATE PASTURES PASTURE SHARE WITH CATTLE, SHEEP OR GOATS YOUNG FOALS CONTINUOUS PARASITE EXPOSURE HIGH STOCKING ENSITY NON-ROTATE PASTURES MeIuM/HIGH RIsK epg strongi C Quest OR Quest PLus strongi C BOARING BARNS MOVEMENT OF HORSES ON/OFF FARM OPTIMAL PARASITE CLIMATE HIGH STOCKING ENSITY YOUNG OR OL ANIMAL FE ON GROUN IN GROUPS HIGH RIsK >500 epg ANtHeLCIe eq OR strongi PAste** ANtHeLCIe eq OR strongi PAste** NO MANURE REMOVAL NON-ROTATE PASTURES MIXE WITH ONKEYS MOVEMENT OF HORSES ON/OFF FARM september Quest OR Quest PLus FALL OCtOBeR NOVeMBeR strongi C Every situation is different, work with your veterinarian to determine appropriate seasonality and duration for all deworming products.
