1 Curricula Standardization of Veterinary Schools in Asia By Prof. Romziah Sidik, DVM. Ph.D. UniversitasAirlangga STANDARDIZATION CURRICULA OF VETERINARY SCHOOLS IN ASIAN REGION BACKGROUND Veterinarians and veterinary science play an important role, take place on responsibilities for eradication of zoonoses, food safety assurance, environmental conservation, and collaboration with international standard on animal welfare, provision of good-quality medical care to all kinds of animals. Asian Association of Veterinary Schools (AAVS) is the only one international association of Asian veterinary schools to discuss and exchange newest information on these subjects. In all sectors, veterinarian must be competent to perform trustable veterinary public services. In 2015 the regional conventions such as General Agreement on Trade in Service (GATS) and ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) will take effect, so ASEAN and Asian Countries must prepare the standard of competence for veterinarian in various sectors to assure that the service provided meets the required qualification to control food safety and animal disease risk (including zoonotic risks) within the region. Each country must also establish a National Occupational Standard of Competence (NOSC). These elements will regulate veterinarian s qualification to perform service in a given country; individuals are required to have a certificate of competence issued by the national institute/board for competence certification. To move toward a standardized competence across Asian countries, there are three major pillars that play important roles in developing the International Qualification Framework of veterinary school, these pillars are the critical platform for producing competency and qualified veterinarians. Asian Association of Veterinary Schools had held the 12 th Congress on September 4 th 6 th, 2013 in JW Marriott Hotel Surabaya, hosted by Universitas Airlangga. Twenty-seven members of AAVS were attended on this meeting, they are come from Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam, Philipines, Laos, Cambodia, Japan, Korea, and Chinese Taipei. The out put of this meeting was the establishment of Mapping Curricula and Gap Analysis Document of Veterinary School in Asia. After those meeting the AAVS formed a working group that composed from eight members (1. Prof. Pan Dong Ryu (President AAVS), 2. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tanu Pinyopummintr (General Secretary AAVS), 3. Prof. Romziah Sidik, DVM., Ph.D (Chair Person), 4. Prof. Suneerat Aiumlamai (Dean FVM Khon Kaen University Thailand), 5. Prof. Dr.Moch Hair Bedjo (Dean of FVM UPM Malaysia), 6. Prof. Linda Baldrias (Dean FVM Losbannos, Philliphines), 7. Prof. Maeda (Tokyo University). The working group havefinalized all requirement document for the curricula standardization of Veterinary Schools in Asia on 3th 4 th September 2014 in Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia.. The objective of Curricula Standardization of Veterinary Schools in Asia: 1.To meet the minimum requirement of the international standard; 2. Prepare day one competencies for graduates in Asian Veterinary Schools, and 3.Provide the ground for accreditation of Veterinary Schools in Asia. Many strategies for achieving the goals of Curricula Standardization of Veterinary School in Asia by: a. Curricula mapping of Veterinary School in Asia; b. Preparing Learning outcomes of Veterinary Schools program as well as courses; c. Providing minimum requirement of Veterinary Schools Curricula in Asia; d. Preparing instrument accreditation of Veterinary Schools in Asia. Furthermore, the outcomes of Curricula Standardization of Veterinary School in Asia may bring some beneficial for Asian Association of Veterinary Schools (AAVS) to be have the standard curricula of Veterinary Schools in Asian Region, and it could be used for preparing accreditation instrument and the board of International Accreditation of Veterinary Schools in Asia. The 14 th Asian Association of Veterinary School (AAVS) Congressin conjunction withthe 6 th South East Asia Veterinary School Association (SEAVSA) Meeting 'Veterinary Education and Veterinary Challenges in One Health/Aging Pets'. December 11 th 13 th, The Regent Chaam Beach Resort, Hua Hin Cha Am, Thailand
