7 THU 14 may Thoracic radiography and radiology for practitioners Ruth Dennis MA VetMB DVR DipECVDI MRCVS, Head of the Diagnostic Imaging Unit, Animal Health Trust BVA, London keywords: Thoracic radiography Film reading Interpretation companion animal courses Thoracic radiography is a mainstay of imaging in small animal practice, both for diagnosis and for ruling out certain diseases such as metastases. However, the wide range of patients encountered and the need to avoid manual restraint whenever possible pose challenges in the acquisition of suitable images. This course will show how diagnostic thoracic radiographs can be acquired in a variety of circumstances and how to identify potentially confusing incidental findings. Separate sessions on the lungs, heart, pleural space, mediastinum and thoracic wall will cover a wide range of disease processes encountered in small animal practice, some familiar and others less so. A logical approach to interpretation will be emphasised. The lectures will be followed by a film reading session to allow delegates to put their newly-enhanced interpretative skills to the test. The prevalence of cancer is increasing; partly due to the fact that our patients are living longer, but also due to the increased ability to diagnose neoplasia, and increased owner awareness and expectations. Alongside this, huge advances have been made in treatments, meaning that new and exciting therapies are becoming available in both referral and first opinion veterinary practices. The day will begin with diagnostic strategies, then continue with staging, treatment and prognosis. We will also cover a selection of common tumour types with case studies. Given that cancer often affects our aged geriatric dogs, the course will also cover the management of concurrent disease through a case-based approach. Five things you will learn: What is meant by staging and how this is best achieved The benefits of taking fine needle aspirates and a brief overview of interpretation Which is the best approach to making a diagnosis (incisional and excisional biopsy techniques) Management and prognosis of common canine cancers To balance the management of cancer and co-morbidities when they exist Member early bird price* 180 Member standard price 210 Non-member early bird price* 570 Non-member standard price BVA CPD SPRING/SUMMER 2015 PROGRAMME *Applies to bookings made more than six weeks in advance of the course date.
