2 Changes in roles/ structure since AWO functions performed by veterinarians in the Animal Welfare and Training Unit. ACEC Procedures- definition of AWO: AWO means the person fulfilling the role of Animal Welfare Officer and authorised by the ACEC to ensure that animal research projects are proceeding in compliance with the Legislation and with the decisions of the ACEC. The AWO is a member of the Animal Welfare and Training Unit.
3 Training and competency assessment. Veterinary clinical care for research animals. Monitoring care and use of research animals. Pre review of Animal Ethics Applications. Development of policy, procedures and guidelines. Assistance with research projects.

Provide advice on anaesthesia, analgesia, species and strain selection, sample collection, surgery. Review SOPs submitted with applications. Identify and assist researchers to correct issues that may inhibit ethical review by ACEC.
