Due to the later date for the tour, we were rewarded with fuller displays. The planting season for 2017 ran quite late, with a not insignificant amount of projects being planted in January On the flip side, the spring has been particularly cold and the flowering season subsequently running a fortnight to a month late. Mechanical planting is something that we have established and built on over the past 5 years. In keeping with such experience our precision with timings and pricing have improved significantly. If you have a project on the horizon, that may be limited by man power - call us today for a quote - it is low impact and very cost effective for the appropriate volume of bulbs. We continue to push our network of growers for improved quality, variety and sizes. While there continue to be supply challenges for the right product, we always endeavour to put you the customer on the best possible footing by supplying only the best. 9 Herbs and Bulbs The concept Biodiversity in the urban environment is becoming more important! In addition, much attention is paid to ecological management and the development of herbaceous vegetations. In order to achieve a high biodiversity value and to guarantee a long flowering period, we are experimenting with the concept of bulbs and herbs. Within this concept, the forces of stable and native herb vegetations are combined with a specifically developed natural bulb mixture. This creates a vegetation with a long flowering period, great added value for biodiversity and extensive, ecological maintenance. 10 Why bulbs are so special By Carien van Boxtel Bulbs are traditionally Dutch and form part of our DNA. Bulb cultivation forms our landscape: think of Keukenhof and the beautiful bulb fields that enrich the Dutch landscape as colourful graphic blocks and ribbons. But also: massive, naturalistic stinzen plantings throw colourful carpets in the vast gardens of Dutch country houses and castles! Bulbs are indispensable in every garden and in every park. Bulbs make great combinations Bulbs have an important advantage over other plants: they store energy from one growing season to the next. When a bulb starts to grow, it uses these reserves to develop roots, shoots, leaves and flowers. Being self-sufficient means that flower bulbs don t have to wait for perfect weather or ideal soil conditions. By nature, they already have what they need to thrive. Flower bulbs also provide a welcome extension of the flowering season, because they provide early flowers (effect of snowdrops, crocuses, glory of the snow and scillas) as well as late in the garden season (dahlias, gladioli) for spectacular colour and effect. Because there is always a bulb in flower whatever the season, bulbs offer a succession of blooms and weeks of performance as well as great plant combinations: they interact with each other as well as with other plants! 11 Bulbs and biodiversity Flowering bulbs make a very important contribution to biodiversity. Especially single-flowered and earlyflowering blooms are a welcome source of nectar and pollen for a variety of insects, such as butterflies and bees. Especially in the early spring, flowering bulbs are very important, because there is still little pollen and nectar available. The honeybee already flies at around 7 degrees Celsius! Most bulbs aren t very particular about where they are planted and they are happy in pots and containers, in borders, on roundabouts, beneath trees and shrubs, and in woodlands, meadows and even lawns. The only thing you have to do next is wait a few months before getting surprised! That s why bulbs are so great: you do not necessarily have to have green fingers to get started. Traditionally we can choose from tulip varieties in spectacular colours and shapes and also daffodils are no longer grown in canary yellow with a large trumpet only. Some of our mixtures just flower in the early Spring, whilst others start early and flower until the end of June! Depending on your mowing regime, you can choose the most suitable mixtures. 15 Biodiversity in verges and grass areas What is biodiversity? Biodiversity is a term we use to describe the richness of nature. It is about the great variety of animals, plants, habitats and genes. By interaction with environmental factors, biodiversity creates ecosystems in which organisms can live, for example humans. The habitats of bees and butterflies have become increasingly smaller and are also increasingly further apart. Floral roadsides, gardens and public green spaces can constitute an important link between these habitats. Cooperation with the Beekeepers Association and the Butterfly Foundation Organisations such as the British Beekeepers Association (BBKA), as well as its Dutch counterpart (NBV), and the Dutch Butterfly Foundation, are committed to improving the living conditions of bees and butterflies. Together with these organisations, we have developed special mixtures which are bee and butterfly friendly. Bulbs for bees The bulbs which we use in our bee mixtures all belong in the top 10. The botanical forms of all bulbs mentioned below are good for bees. Bees include both honey bees and wild bees. The mentioned varieties are examples of the tested species. The nectar and pollen value depends on various conditions such as weather, location, etc. In the two columns, the values are given from 1 (moderate but useful) to 5 (very good). Our naturalising bulbs are all nursery grown and not collected from the wild! In general, they require minimal maintenance and many of them will grow in (semi-) shady locations. 64 Inspiration Perennials and flower bulbs Perennial borders are often quite bare in the early Spring. To enjoy these borders over a longer period of time, you could plant bulbs which will flower in March, April and May. It is important to bear in mind that some perennials will also start to grow early in the Spring, and to choose the right bulbs to achieve a harmonious picture. As an added bonus the plants will cover up the withering foliage of the bulbs after flowering. 66 Inspiration Flower bulbs in public parks Public parks are popular and important spaces in cities. Flower bulbs in these parks play an important role in the Spring feeling of visitors. There are many possibilities with regard to the range. We are happy to recommend the varieties which are most suitable for your park. Bulbs in pots and containers Flowers in pots and containers have become an essential part of the urban environment. They give that extra embellishment. The pots may be filled with many types of bulbs. 67 Special projects with bulbs Bulbs can be used in many creative ways. Besides the usual applications in flower beds and pots, they can also be used to make special (company) logos or the so-called Smiley with daffodils on a slope. Small bulbs such as crocus, chionodoxa, scilla and botanical daffodils can be applied to roof- and vertical gardens. Bulbs can also be used to capture special occasions such as commemorations of historical events. Flower bulbs in zoos Every Spring, a zoo can be a wonderful explosion of colour. It is not only the (young) animals that attract visitors. Tulips and other spring flowering bulbs can be a welcome addition to the visitor experience. 113 Practical tips Planting methods, feeding and planting location 25 years ago, JUB Holland developed a planting machine that plants bulbs in existing lawns and roadsides, in a simple manner. In this chapter you can find information about mechanical planting as well as feeding and mowing policies. 114 Mechanical planting Mechanical planting of flower bulbs Our special planting machine is ideal for planting large quantities of bulbs in existing grass, along roadsides, in lawns, roundabouts etc. By planting the bulbs with our machine you will achieve a major reduction in labour costs. The machine is a combination of planter and (mini) tractor. A large container holds the bulbs, whilst at the bottom two belts deliver the bulbs to the plant feet. Two vertical rotating knives open the turf just before the plant feet. The feet dive into the ground and open up the turf, at which point the belts release the bulbs which fall into the soil and are then covered. The machine also puts the turf back in position, followed by a roller. 115 Plant capacity of the machine Under the right circumstances it is possible to plant approximately 10,000 daffodils or 25,000 crocuses/small bulbs per hour. The speed of the planting may vary depending on factors like soil type, location and bulb size. Embankment planting Especially for sloping areas we offer a machine that can plant on banks with a maximum angle of 30 to 35 degrees. This machine is provided with caterpillar tracks, and an additional plant foot so that a uniform effect can be achieved. Planting with side planter In order to plant closer to trees, we recently developed a side planter. This machine has a plant foot mounted on the side of the machine which enables us to plant between, or very close to, trees. 116 Feeding, fertilisation plan and mowing Feeding and fertilisation plan To preserve your bulbs, it is very important to provide them with food. JUB has therefore further expanded the service. It is now also possible to carry out feeding in the Autumn and Spring with our specially selected biological bulb fertiliser. This is the same fertiliser which we use for our own cultivation at our nursery. In Autumn, the fertiliser is given simultaneously with the mechanical planting of bulbs in grass via a device installed on the planting machine. An environmentally friendly organic food can be used in the Spring. The organic component in this fertiliser is converted into humus by soil organisms. Autumn fertilisation Spring fertilisation Mowing When using naturalising bulbs in grass areas, a commonly accepted guideline is that mowing can be started an average of six to eight weeks after flowering. This will allow the bulbs enough time to produce seeds and die back naturally. An exception to this rule is the allium, which can be mown directly after flowering. 123 Our Specialists and terms Acceptance: By placing an order with Beechill Bulbs Ltd, you acknowledge that you have read and agree to be bound by these terms and conditions of business. 1. Minimum Order: To avail of trade/wholesale rates, all initial orders must have a minimum value of 300 plus VAT. 2. Order deadlines: In order to guarantee supply of varieties, orders must be submitted before the end of january (for spring stock) and mid June (for autumn stock). 3. Delivery Charges: Delivery is included for orders exceeding 500 plus VAT. For smaller orders, delivery is chargeable. 4. Delivery method: Your order will be delivered by us directly or by courier. The most cost e-ective method will be chosen. This is determined by the size, weight, destination and urgency of the shipment. 5. Prices: Prices quoted are always in EURO ( ), excluding 13.5% 6. Payment terms: All goods must be paid for in advance (for delivery) or on collection. Cash, Debit & Credit cards, Electronic funds transfer & cheques are accepted. For cheque payments goods will only ship when payment has cleared our bank account (allow 3 working days). 7. Credit facilities: Are offered at our discretion and we reserve the right to refuse credit. 8. Credit terms: Where credit has been given, it is strictly on a 30 days from our invoice date. After this period we reserve the right to charge interest at the rate of 2% per month thereafter on accounts not paid. 9. Conditions of sale: Goods remain the property of Beechill Bulbs Ltd until payment in full has been received. Stock is only reserved on receipt of payment. 10. Order changes: These can be accepted up to one week before delivery. For items not in stock it can take up to an additional two weeks before the order is ready to ship. 11. Quality: It is your responsibility to check your goods upon receipt, for quality issues. Bulbs must be stored in a well ventilated cool and dry place (bulbs must NOT be allowed to get wet). All orders are checked for quality and accuracy before shipment. 12. Claims: Must be made within 5 working days from the receipt of the order. The value of the claim can never be more than the invoiced amount of the bulbs (not including any delivery charges). Beechill Bulbs Ltd are not responsible for loses arising from improper storage, exteneded storage, planting methods, soil conditions, or other factors beyond our control once the stock has left our warehouse. 13. A) Goods are sold on a non-return basis. B) Return shipments without prior written authorisation will not be accepted. 14. Disclaimer: Beechill Bulbs Ltd are not responsible for non-performance or loss of bulbs because of improper storage, planted too deep or too shallow, pests, under or over watering, or otherwise injured from the use of pesticide or fertilizer or any growing conditions beyond our control. 15. Varieties: While we strive to provide true varieties at all times, amy non true varieties must be communicated to us as soon as they are identi ed in the growing season. Beechill Bulbs Ltd reserves the right to substitue varieties with similar or better varieties where there is a problem with supply of a certain variety. The products listed in ths catalogue are offered subject to availability.
