8 PLEASE TAKE NOTE ABOUT VACCINATIONS Parvovirus Canine parvovirus is an acute, highly contagious disease of dogs that was first described in the early 1970s. The virus has a tendency to attack rapidly reproducing cells, such as those lining the gastrointestinal tract. The virus is shed in large amounts in the stools of acutely infected dogs for up to several weeks following infection. The disease is transmitted by oral contact with infected feces. Parvo can be carried on the dog s hair and feet, as well as on contaminated crates, shoes, and other objects. When the dog licks the fecal material off hair, feet, or anything that came in contact with infected feces, he acquires the disease. Parvo affects dogs of all ages, but most cases occur in puppies 6 to 20 weeks of age. Doberman Pinschers and Rottweilers appear to acquire the infection more readily and experience more severe symptoms. The reason for lower resistance in these breeds is unknown. Following an incubation period that averages four to five days, the acute illness begins with depression, vomiting, and diarrhea. Some dogs have no fever, while others have high fever (up to 106 F, 41.1 C). Pups with severe abdominal pain exhibit a tucked-up abdomen. Diarrhea is profuse and contains mucus and/or blood. Dehydration develops rapidly. Heart muscle involvement in neonatal puppies used to be common, but is now quite rare. This is because routine vaccination of brood bitches two to four weeks before breeding boosts maternal antibody levels and provides better protection for puppies. Suspect parvo in all pups with the abrupt onset of vomiting and diarrhea. The most efficient way to diagnose parvo is to identify either the virus or virus antigens in stools. An in-office blood serum test (ELISA) is available for rapid veterinary diagnosis. False negatives do occur. Virus isolation techniques are more precise, but require an outside laboratory. Treatment: Dogs with this disease require intensive veterinary management. In all but the most mild cases, hospitalization is essential to correct dehydration and electrolyte imbalances. Intravenous fluids and medications to control vomiting and diarrhea are often required. More severe cases may require blood plasma transfusions and other intensive care. Puppies and dogs should not eat or drink until the vomiting has stopped but require fluid support during that time. This can take three to five days. Antibiotics are prescribed to prevent septicemia and other bacterial complications, which are the usual cause of death. The outcome depends upon the virulence of the specific strain of parvovirus, the age and immune status of the dog, and how quickly the treatment is started. Most pups who are under good veterinary care recover without complications. Prevention: Thoroughly clean and disinfect the quarters of infected animals. Parvo is an extremely hardy virus that resists most household cleaners and survives on the premises for months. The most effective disinfectant is household bleach in a 1:32 dilution. The bleach must be left on the contaminated surface for 20 minutes before being rinsed. Vaccinations - starting by 8 weeks of age, will prevent most (but not all) cases of parvovirus infection. During the first weeks of life, puppies are protected by high levels of maternal antibodies. As these levels decline, there is a period lasting from two to four weeks during which puppies are susceptible to infection because vaccinations have not yet fully taken effect. This susceptible period varies from pup to pup, which is why pups anywhere between 6 and 20 weeks age can be especially susceptible to parvo. Nearly all apparent vaccination failures are due to exposure during this susceptible period. Newer high titer-low passage vaccines are narrowing the window of susceptibility. These modified live virus vaccines contain a higher number of virus particles (high titer), which are less attenuated (low passage; a low passage vaccine contains virus particles that have been less attenuated, or weakened, than those in the average vaccine). That means high titer-low passage vaccines can generally elicit an immune system response in young animals who have a maternal antibody level that would normally prevent them from responding. Nevertheless, it is still important to isolate young puppies as much as possible from other dogs and from potential sources of infection until they complete the parvo vaccination series at 16 weeks of age. Currently, recommendations are for a booster a year from the initial vaccine series and then revaccination every three years.

9 Kennel Cough in dogs Kennel Cough is also called Canine Cough - Bordetellosis and Infectious Tracheobronchitis Kennel Cough in dogs will stimulate a coarse dry hacking cough about three to seven days after the dog is initially infected it sounds as if the dog needs to clear it's throat and the cough will be triggered by any extra activity or exercise many dogs that acquire Kennel Cough will cough every few minutes all day long their general state of health and alertness will be unaffected they usually have no rise in temperature and do not lose their appetite the signs of Canine Cough usually will last from 7 to 21 days and can be very annoying for the dog and the dog's owners life threatening cases of Kennel Cough are extremely rare and a vast majority of dogs that acquire the infection will recover on their own with no medication cough suppressants and occasionally antibiotics are the usual treatment selections. WHAT IS KENNEL COUGH: Actually clinical cases of Kennel Cough are usually caused by several infectious agents working together to damage and irritate the lining of the dog's trachea and upper bronchi. The damage to the tracheal lining is fairly superficial but exposes nerve endings that become irritated simply by the passage of air over the damaged tracheal lining. Once the organisms are eliminated the tracheal lining will heal rapidly. The most common organisms associated with Canine Cough are the bacteria called Bordetella bronchiseptica and two viruses called Parainfluenza virus and Adenovirus and even an organism called Mycoplasma. HOW IS IT TRANSMITTED: Kennel Cough is not something that is restricted to kennels it is an air borne virus so your dog can pick it up on its daily walk the causative organisms can be present in the expired air of an infected dog much the same way that human colds are transmitted the airborne organisms will be carried in the air in microscopically tiny water vapor or dust particles the airborne organisms if inhaled by a susceptible dog can attach to the lining of the trachea and upper airway passages find a warm moist surface on which to reside and replicate it eventually damage the cells they infect. The reason this disease seems so common and is even named Kennel Cough is that wherever there are numbers of dogs confined together in an enclosed environment such as a kennel animal shelter or indoor dog show the disease is much more likely to be spread the same is true with the colds spread from human to human they are much more likely to occur in a populated enclosed environment such as an airplane elevator or office all it takes for contagion to occur is a single source that is one infected dog an enclosed environment and susceptible individuals in close proximity to the source of the infection infected dogs can spread the organisms for days to weeks even after seeming to have fully recovered!

10 Dog Vaccinations Vaccination has revolutionised control of infectious disease in our pets. It is essential that all pets are adequately vaccinated to help protect the pet population as a whole. Responsible pet care requires puppies to be given their initial course of vaccinations, but this cannot protect them for the rest of their lives. Adult dogs require regular vaccination to maintain immunity against disease. Puppy Vaccination Puppies are temporarily protected against many diseases by antibodies received through their mother s milk. These maternal antibodies decline in the first few months of their lives, however until they drop sufficiently they can also neutralise vaccines. This is why a series of vaccinations is necessary in a puppy. Adult Dog Vaccination The immunity from puppy vaccination weakens over time and your pet can again become susceptible to disease. Annual health checks and booster vaccinations, as required, will provide the best protection for the life of your pet. After Vaccination Care Following vaccination your dog may be off-colour for a day or two, or have some slight swelling or tenderness at the injection site. Access to food and water and a comfortable area to rest are usually all that is required for a quick recovery. However, if the response seems more severe, you should contact your vet for advice. INFECTIOUS DISEASES OF DOGS THAT CAN BE VACCINATED AGAINST Canine Parvovirus Canine parvovirus is a disease that affects dogs of all ages but is most serious in young pups and older dogs. The virus attacks the intestines causing bloodstained diarrhoea, uncontrollable vomiting and severe abdominal pain. Dogs often die from severe dehydration despite intensive veterinary care. It is not necessary to have direct contact with other dogs for the disease to be spread. The virus is so persistent that the infected dog s environment needs to be cleaned with a potent disinfectant to prevent spread to other dogs. Outbreaks occur regularly throughout Australia, especially in summer. Canine Distemper Canine distemper is a highly contagious viral disease that can affect dogs of any age with young puppies being at highest risk. Symptoms vary but can include fever, coughing, sneezing, nasal discharge, vomiting, diarrhoea, loss of appetite and depression. Muscle tremors, fits and paralysis usually occur later in the disease. Treatment is usually ineffective and the recovery rate very low. Dogs that do recover may have permanent brain damage. Canine Hepatitis Canine hepatitis is a viral disease which, like distemper is extremely contagious and often fatal. Dogs of any age can become infected, however severe cases are rare in dogs over two years of age. Symptoms include high fever, depression, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhoea and acute abdominal pain. In severe cases death can occur within 24 to 36 hours. Dogs that recover may develop long term liver and kidney problems and can act as carriers spreading the disease to other dogs for many months. Canine Cough Canine cough is a condition produced by several highly infectious diseases, which can be easily spread wherever dogs congregate, such as parks, shows, obedience schools and boarding kennels. Among the infectious agents associated with canine cough is the bacterium known as Bordetella bronchiseptica and the canine viruses parainfluenza, adenovirus type 2 and distemper. Affected dogs have a dry hacking cough which can persist for several weeks. It is distressing for pet dogs and their owners. It is a major problem for working and sporting dogs. Pneumonia can also be a consequence of infection. Canine Coronavirus Canine coronavirus is another contagious virus and causes depression, loss of appetite, vomiting and diarrhoea especially in young dogs. Diarrhoea may last for several days in some cases. Although most dogs will recover with treatment, coronavirus has the potential to be fatal, especially if other infectious agents such as parvovirus are present.

11 Dogs & Ticks Ticks are blood sucking ectoparasites (a parasite that lives on the exterior of an animal). There are hundreds of species of ticks worldwide. Australia has around 70 species of ticks. Paralysis ticks (Ixodes holocyclus) affect dogs in Australia. They live on the east coast from North Queensland to Northern Victoria. In northern parts of Australia, ticks can be found all year around. In the cooler southern areas, tick season is generally from spring through to late autumn. What do paralysis ticks look like? What do Paralysis Ticks do? The tick attaches to the dog & borrows it's mouthparts into the skin. It sucks the blood & injects a neurotoxin called Holocyclotoxin, which causes paralysis. What is a Neurotoxin & What does Holocyclotoxin do? A neurotoxin is a toxic substance which damages or destroys the cells of the central nervous system. Holocyclotoxin is a neurotoxin which is excreted from the tick's salivary glands into the dog. What are the signs of tick poisoning in dogs? Loss of appetite Vomiting or dry retching, excessive salivation, difficulty swallowing, difficulty breathing, coughing. Change to bark. Coughing. Noisy panting. Difficulty swallowing. As symptoms progress you may notice: Limb weakness, starting in the hind legs, progressing to the front legs, appearing wobbly & uncoordinated, falling over, paralysis. Incontinence. Laboured breathing. Coma. What to do if your dog has been poisoned by a tick? Try to keep yourself & your dog as calm as possible. Remove food & water as poisoning can prevent the dog from swallowing properly, which in turn could lead to choking. Take it to the veterinarian as soon as possible. The longer you delay taking your dog to a vet, the worse the symptoms will become, which may lead to death. How do you prevent tick poisoning? Check your pet thoroughly every day for ticks. Start from the tip of the nose & work your way right down to the tail. Ensure you check between the toes, inside the ears (be careful). Regularly use insecticides recommended by your veterinarian.
