1 - Old Dogs &Pups (07/15/2015) OVER NINE YEARS OF SUPPORTING OUR K-9 TROOPS MORE THAN 450 MILITARY WORKING DOG TEAMS SUPPORTED 121 Deployed Military Working Dog Kennels Supported More than $109, of supplies shipped down range Hello everyone We are currently supporting five (5) kennels and thirty (30) deployed Air Force, Army, Navy, and Marine teams as of July 15, July 2015 brings us to nine years and eleven months of operation for our Old Dawgs & Pups program. Once again, I d just like to say thank you to all of you that have supported our awesome programs and especially our troops and their canine partners deployed down range. Area of Operation Status - K-9 Teams Arriving/Departing Due to the worldwide security issues and concerns for safeguarding our troops, we will not be listing the name of the bases or countries, in which our troops are deployed. All locations will be listed as Undisclosed Location Southwest Asia (UDL). We are currently supporting troops at five locations in Southwest Asia. We have no pups to introduce this month. Pups arriving in the AOR We have no new Pups arriving in the AOR at this time. We are approaching a very large change over within the next month, so troops will need sponsors in the very near future. (Ret) Bob Sullivan (Phu Cat) presented MSgt Ben Jones with his Alpha Dog Certificate and unique serial numbered Coin #17 from Old Dawgs & Pups on June 29, 2015 at Eglin AFB, Florida during his retirement ceremony. MSgt Jones completed three tours with OD&P. First, then-ssgt Jones and his MWD Jannine (F527) were deployed at Ali Air Base, Iraq with the 407 th AEG/ESFS in Jo and Dar Robinson (FoK), Gordon Johnson (Takhli), and Rick Matott (Ubon) supported him during this deployment. TSgt Jones deployed to FOB Warrior with the 506 th ESFS in Iraq as the Kennel Master in Bill Cummings (U-Tapao) supported him during that deployment. MSgt Jones third deployment took him to the 386 th ESFS, Ali Al Salem Air Base, Kuwait in 2014 as the Kennel Master. John Hemp (TSN) supported Ben during his final tour. Other News concerning OD&P Graduates - Continued On a recent visit to the United States Air Force Academy, Bill and Janice Cummings had the pleasure to visit with TSgt Justin Kitts and his family.

The two families spent time in the snow and sleet as the visit included a tour of the Academy grounds and facilities, a close up look at the residents of the students, a K-9 tour (which included

They are long time friends and the visit was just an extremely awesome event. The two families spent time in the snow and sleet as the visit included a tour of the Academy grounds and facilities, a close up look at the residents of the students, a K-9 tour (which included visiting with SSgt Kieran Gibson who is also an OD&P graduate), and a visit to falconry facility. Justin is also the holder of Alpha Dog Coin #10. Then SSgt Justin Kitts deployed with Old Dawgs & Pups to the 455 th ESFS, Bagram Air Field, Afghanistan in May of 2009 and a stakeholder of Camp Kujo where Phil Carroll (Takhli/NKP) and Patsy Perrotto (NKP) supported him during that tour. SSgt Kitts again deployed to Afghanistan to FOB Wilson where Patsy Perrotto (NKP) supported him again. Justin earned a Bronze Star with V device for his actions during this deployment. Falconry you say. That is correct Justin Kitts, a well-known dog handler is now the OIC of USAFA s Falconry program. The Air Force Academy has twelve falcons that they use mainly for public relations and recruiting. Some of the falcons are also trained to fly at the halftime of every home football game, which is a sight to see. The falcon is released from the top of the press box, there is a cadet falconer standing on the 50 yard line spinning the lure which symbolizes prey/food, the falcon swoops down for the lure and the cadet falconer makes the falcon miss, the falcon then does a couple laps around the stadium before coming in to grasp the lure. Justin was picked as the OIC for this program because his vast knowledge of animal training. He says that training falcons is very similar to training a dog, for instance the falcon is trained that the lure equals food. The falcon has a drive and desire to obtain the lure because they understand once they have it in their grasp they will be rewarded with a piece of quail. If you ever are by the Academy and would like a tour, Justin has the key Let s just say this guy has his hands in everything Destiny, a Grey-Phase Gyrfalcon is one of the United States Air Force Academy s falcon mascots. She hatched in 1993 in the wild and was an accidental migrant to Colorado. She was captured by a local falconer, who hunted with her, taking down birds as large as Canada geese. She was later donated to the Academy. Despite her early years in the wild, Destiny is one of the Academy s calmest and most easygoing falcons. Because Destiny is an accomplished hunter, the Academy only uses her for educational presentations. Her gray color is the most common for the Gyrfalcon species, which may also be black or white.

Rumor has it that the training and the experience were awesome.

13 Here s this month s update on the K-9 Supply Program At the time of this report we have 22 members of the Old Dawgs & Pups program actively supporting 21 handlers assigned to five (5) kennels in Southwest Asia. Our K-9 Supply program has been coordinated and funded by the Old Dawgs & Pups program volunteers. The supporters are members of the VSPA, VDHA, and friends of K-9. A total of 2,363 pieces of equipment has been delivered to our K-9 troops serving in the AOR from August 15, 2005 to July 15, Old Dawgs & Friends have supported 121 kennels and 450 K-9 personnel via our program. We have purchased and shipped $29, worth of supplies to 121 kennels solely via your personal donations. Including the Leatherman Corporation and other noted major donations; our program has supplied a total of $109, to deployed Military Working Dog teams.
