1 The Coton Malgache The Coton Malgache Volume 12 Issue 3 September 2012 Happy Autumn & Happy Howl-o-ween Coton Photo Contest Back by popular demand, we will be having another photography contest for CCTC members. There are two categories. For those of you who love costumes and include your furry friends, there is a Howl-o-ween contest. Dress up your cute Coton in full costume, with just an accessory or two. For those dogs that just do not tolerate outfits, take a photo in a Howl-o-ween environment think pumpkins or a scary scene. The second category is Winter Fun. For those of us on the wet coast, dashing through powdery snow is less likely than dripping wet from the rain. However you enjoy winter wherever you live, snap some shots of your Coton at his or her favourite winter activity. Hey, that may be curled up by the fire! Submit your Howl-o-ween photos by the deadline for the December newsletter. They will be judged and published in that newsletter. To give you more time for winter activities, Winter Fun photos are due before the deadline for the March 2013 newsletter. Prizes yet to be determined. Send your photos to chriswasy@shaw.ca. One of Paula Campbell s puppies hides among the leaves President s Message Barb Canduro Welcome everyone to the fall season, where we do alot of raking and cleaning dead leaves after the glorious fall show of colours here in Southern Ontario. Our National Specialty has come and gone, please read Marie France's review of the show, and congrats to all the winners. Our club calendar is featured also in this newsletter, and we are using this as a means to raise funds for our club. Check it out!! We will be holding our elections shortly for positions within the club executive, watch for further announcements. If you would like to run for a position, or would like to get invlolved in any other club activities or you have any suggestions for activities, feel free to let any of the board members know of your intentions or ideas.

There were 4 males and 8 females: 2 in the elementary class 1 in the puppy class 3 in the junior class 4 in the open class 2 in the Champion class It was Mr. Branislav Rajic, an FCI judge from Slovanie, who had the pleasure of judging our Cotons. THANK YOU, Linda! Mr. Rajic was very appreciated by all the participants. He took his time to make a thorough evaluation of each of our Cotons. He was impressed by the quality of our Cotons. All the participants enjoyed being together, it was a great Specialty and also a great weekend! At Right: Prize table.

Ever scratched your head trying to figure out what BOB, BIS, and all those other initials mean? Here s a very simple description of how dog shows are organized. All the entrants of a particular breed are divided into classes according to sex and age. Males (aka dogs) go into the ring first starting with the youngest dogs. Different dog show organizations may organize things slightly differently, but commonly there are two puppy classes for Junior Puppy 6 9 month olds, Senior Puppy 9 12 month old, then month olds, and the OPEN class for older dogs. Any dog may be entered in the OPEN class except those who are already Canadian champions. There may also be special categories for Canadian Bred and Bred by Exhibitor where the handler in the ring is also the breeder and owner of the dog. After all the classes for the male dogs are finished, the first place dog from each class goes back into the ring for the judging of WINNERS Dog. At this level, dogs earn points towards becoming a championship. The dog who places second is RESERVE WINNERS DOG.

4 Dog Show 101 (continued) This whole process is then repeated for all the females or bitches. The first place females from each class return to the ring for selection of WINNERS BITCH. Next all those who have already achieved a Canadian Championship enter the ring with the Winners Dog and the Winners Bitch. From these entrants, the judge will pick Best of Breed (BOB). If a male is chosen, the judge will pick the best female in the group for Best of Opposite (BOO). If a bitch is best of breed, then the best male (according to the judge s decision) will be awarded Best of Opposite. In all of the classes, the judge s task is to compare each entrant to the breed standard and choose the one that in the judge s opinion that comes closest to meeting the breed standard. The judge watches the dogs as a group move about the ring and also examines each dog individually. This same process is carried out for all the different breeds entered in the show. Each breed belongs to one of seven groups: Sporting Dogs, Hounds, Working Dogs, Terriers, Toy Dogs, Non-Sporting Dogs, and Herding Dogs. The Coton de Tulear is in the Toy Group which includes Maltese, pugs, papillions, Cavalier King Charles spaniels, Chihuahuas and many other toy dogs. All the dogs in a group that win Best of Breed go on to compete for first place in the Group. The winners of each group then go on to compete for Best in Show the ultimate dog show achievement! There is also a process for puppies where the best puppy of each breed competes for best puppy in group and finally Best Puppy in Show. As you can see, it is quite a lengthy process from the initial classes to Best of Breed and finally Best in Show. To add to the confusion, at a big event there may be more than one show going on at a time. I have attended dog shows where a Coton has won Best in Show and it is very exciting to see. If you are a pet owner and have not attended a dog show, it can be a lot of fun, but try to find out beforehand what time your particular breed is scheduled to be in the ring. There can also be long stretches of time between Best of Breed, the Group, and Best in Show. For anyone in the Vancouver area, the Lower Mainland Dog Fanciers show at the Tradex Centre in Abbottsford October is a very large show and an event worth attending. I also enjoy watching the Westminster Kennel Club show on TV in February each year. I hope you ve enjoyed this whirlwind review of the dog show world. Chris Wasylishyn

5 CCTC Publishes Their First Calendar for 2013 Our Club has successfully published our first calendar for the year Its glossy and colourful pages boast some beautiful photos of a few of our favourite breed. Several breeders and owners contributed to this fundraiser and you will see their little friends faces watching every day of the year. Funds raised by the sale of months in the calendar brought in $1200 in revenue for the Club (12 months each sold for $100). We also saw the amount of $200 through the purchase of dates in the calendar (20 dates at $10 each). We anticipate additional profit as we sell the calendars too. But so far, with this $1400 alone, it can be declared a success. The use of the profits will be a topic of discussion at our next board meeting. Do you have a suggestion of how our profit could help the breed? So far we have some items for discussion including: health testing support, the Valerie Ford Coton Rescue Fund, buyer education, and education of the public about puppy mills and backyard breeders. The Club has donated one calendar for inclusion in the raffle basket at the Tradex Show at the end of October. You can see the calendar online at the below link. Once at this site, click preview under the calendar and you can scroll through the months. Calendars may be purchased through Lulu.com at the above site for $25.00 each plus shipping and handling OR you may purchase them directly through the club for $25.00 TOTAL and we cover the shipping and handling. To purchase direct through the club and save yourself some money, please send an to the Club Secretary, Linda Brookes, at: shoes.and.dogs@hotmail.com. The board is looking for volunteers to put together the calendar for We know there are many people with great ideas and inspiration in our club and would love for you to step forward with an offer to be part of the Calendar Team in a capacity you would enjoy.

6 Halloween Dangers for Dogs Submitted by Linda Brookes Although it s a fun occasion, Halloween poses some dangers to be aware of when it comes to your fur-kids. Here are a few of the warnings to remember at this time of year. Candy Any type of candy is not meant for dogs, but especially chocolate. Keep your treat bowl out of dogs reach and keep treat bags from the kids tucked safely away after Halloween. Chocolate can be toxic to dogs and candies containing the artificial sweetener xylitol can also cause problems. Large ingestions of sugary, high-fat candy can lead to pancreatitis, which may not show up for two to four days after the pet ingests the candy. Even candy wrappers, plastic, paper, or foil, may be ingested by the dogs and can cause lifethreatening bowel obstructions that may require surgical intervention. Watch for vomiting, decreased appetite, abdominal pain, not defecating, diarrhea, or lethargy. Costumes - Unless you are sure that your pet will enjoy wearing a costume, you should consider that they might be happier in their fur coat. Costumes also may have any parts that may be chewed off and become a choking hazard. For dogs that do enjoy dressing for the occasion, make sure the costume isn t annoying, unsafe, constrictive, or restrict their hearing, vision, breathing, or barking. Loose fitting costumes may be a tripping hazard. Decorations a carved pumpkin suits the scene on Halloween, but be cautious if you add a candle. Dogs may accidentally knock over pumpkins and could cause a fire or singe their own fur. Consider using a no flame, no mess alternative to light up your jack -o-lantern. Power cords may trip your dog or lead to electrical shock if chewed. Other decorations can be eaten or broken, causing serious harm to your dog; safely secure all wires and cords from decorative lights and props. The door only you know how your dog reacts to the door-bell or knocking on the door. If your dog usually barks and runs to the door, you may best keep them in another room where they can t get to the door. Some of your guests may be scared by a barking dog, or your dog may be frightened by the guests in costume. Dogs may find it very stressful with so many people coming to the door throughout the evening. Ensure your dog is wearing their ID on Halloween. In the unfortunate event that the dog gets outside when shelling-out the candy, it will help him or her find their way back to you. If you have outside animals, consider bringing them inside for all of Halloween; there are some sick people who may pull pranks on animals.

7 Canadian Coton de Tulear Club Annual General Meeting Minutes Saturday, March 3, 2012 Meeting began via teleconference beginning at 4:00 Central, 5:00 Eastern, 1:00 Pacific In attendance: Barb Canduro, Paula Campbell, Diane Benaroch, Chris Wasylishyn, Marie-France Prayal, Barry Frook, Thais Frook, Linda Brookes. Agenda Items: Report from the President Barb Canduro discussed our current action item of the COE renewal, our new website is on the web, there was a request to have a statistic counter on the website, the president agreed to the suggestion to send a monthly letter to all members by then post it on our site Report from the Treasurer Marie-France Prayal gave the report on finances: ,384 revenue, 2, expenses; 2012 revenue 1,178.00, 6.34 expenses; although 2011 resulted in a loss, there are still funds in the bank account Report from the Membership coordinator Linda Brookes reported that 28 members have renewed (or joined) in 2012, Linda will phone the 4 non-renewing breeding members to ask if they will be renewing (if not, they will be removed from our online breeder list), we are offering a free new puppy buyer membership through breeders, it was suggested that our site also provide resources for grooming, puppy training, a place to ask questions, and encourage puppy buyers to contribute to the newsletter Code of Ethics Diane Benaroch reviewed the draft COE revisions, it will be sent to the breeder members for their review and comments before being finalized, all COE breeders in CCTC will be required to sign it New fees for 2013 there was discussion around increasing the breeder price to 100 and pet owners to 50, will review this in November, we will work on improving our site until then to be able to offer more to members to encourage them to join Coton Specialty Show Organization Marie-France Prayal reported that last year was great show; we need a team of 3 people or so to work on the specialty show, Barry and Thais Frook will assist, M-F will do certificates, Linda Brookes organize and do the prizes/gift bags, we will include info in newsletter (via Chris Wasylishyn) about the show and also on site (via Marie-France). Linda to request funding for the show through the board. Priorities of the club for the coming year it was agreed that we need to promote the club, improve our recognition, and go to members for new ideas and volunteers to help out. Puppy Prices prices vary across the country between $2,000 and $2,500. This is because of the need to remain competitive to backyard breeder prices. The club will not set a price standard, it is up to each breeder. New Breeders discussion around the need to have a member in good standing for one year before they can be listed as a breeder on our site. It was noted that for someone who doesn t know another breeder it is difficult to become a member without a sponsor. The purpose is to ensure that the breeder is committed to the breed and responsibility, not to deter new members Rescue there will be information added to the site about Coton Rescue and a page to provide advice on what to do if you lose your dog. Meeting ended at 6:00 PM Central
