If any member in the future would be interested in serving on a COS committee, please express your interest to our new club president, Kevin Cline or any of the COS Board members. 2 Page 2 From The COS President Dear Members, Now that summer is upon us, I hope everyo n e i s t a k i n g advantage of the nice warm weather and lots of fun outdoor activities with all of our Cavaliers. Hopefully, many of you will travel t o t h e w o n d e r f u l summer shows around the country including our combined summer show in Indianapolis. I would like to thank the membership of the Cavaliers Of The South for allowing me the opportunity to serve as your president. It is truly an honor. I will do my best to provide an open exchange of ideas that will help k e e p a l l m e m b e r s informed and most importantly involved. Each and every one of us belongs to this club and it is therefore important for each one of us to have input to help shape our future direction. The COS has a s t r o n g b o a r d i n place. These board m e m b e r s a r e geographically spread through the South and have many talents and interests to offer the club while representing you. Remember, however, the board works for the members h i p. I t i s t h e m e m b e r s h i p t h a t makes the club strong. Input is needed and is ALWAYS welcomed. I t s t h r o u g h e a c h member s input that the club gains insight to grow and prosper. The strength of any club can be measured by the involvement of i t s m e m b e r s. W e should ALL plan to become more involved with our club. There a r e t w o w a y s t o increase involvement; fi rst b y i n cre a si n g m e m b e r s h i p, a n d second by encouraging members to volunteer their time. Unfortunately the COS (like all regions) has seen a steady decline in its membership over the last decade. No doubt, the economy has played a critical role, but the ultimate cause is likely multifaceted. It is time to reverse this trend and grow our membership. I w i l l a p p o i n t a membership committee to develop a plan t o i n c r e a s e o u r members. We want breeders to reach out to new puppy owners to strongly encourage them to join our club. We should all work to p r o v i d e d e s i r e d a c t i v i t i e s f o r p e t owners to encourage their active participat i o n. L e t s h e l p everyone realize the value of their membership. One of the first things that I noticed about the Cavaliers of the So u t h w h e n I first j o i n e d w a s t h e strength and diversity of its membership. Having now been a m e m b e r f o r m a n y years I realize how true that first insight was. No doubt, we have great members. Each of you has talents that can benefit the club. Organizational skills are needed to p l a n s h o w s, f u n matches, and health c l i n i c s. P u b l i c relations skills are needed to reach out to n e w m e m b e r s t o e n c o u r a g e t h e i r participation. The list is endless. The point is, each member has something relevant to offer the club. Lets volunteer our time and talents to help our club succeed. 4 Page 4 Auburn University Offers CM Screening The Wilford and Kate Bailey Small Animal Teaching H o s p i t a l a t A u b u r n University is now offering a C h i a ri - li k e m a l f o rm a - t i o n ( C M ) s c r e e n i n g package to owners and breeders of Cavalier King C h a r l e s S p a n i e l s a n d Brussels Griffons. Referrals are not required and limited appointments will be offered on Thursdays only. To schedule a CM screening, call the Bailey Small Animal Teaching Hospital front desk at CM, a malformation of the skull, is a common cause of syringomyelia (SM) in dogs. The Auburn University CM screenings will identify dogs with CM or the likelihood of developing SM. Cavalier King Charles S p a n i e l s a n d B r u s s e l s Griffons with CM/SM are n o t r e co m m e n d e d fo r breeding. T o q u a li fy fo r t h e C M screening package the dogs must be at least one year o ld a n d a sympt om at i c (showing no signs of CM/ SM). Preanesthetic testing (blood work and thoracic radiographs) must be done by a veterinarian elsewhere within two weeks of the CM screening appointment at Auburn University. The CM screening package includes: Physical and neurologic examinatio n by the neurology/neurosurgery service General anesthesia MRI of the head/ neck Two CD copies of the MRI images Bre eding advice b a s e d o n a p r e v i o u s l y published grading scheme from the British Veterinary Association Cost of the CM/SM screening package is $750. T h e C M s c r e e n i n g appointment may be rescheduled in case of hospital emergencies d u ri n g t h e A u b u rn n e u r o l o g y / neurosurgery regular service. If t h e C M screening needs to be rescheduled, owners/ b r e e d e r s w i l l b e notified by hospital staff by the afternoon prior to the original appointment. During the screenings fur will be shaved for an IV catheter. The dogs will be discharged the same day, unless it is deemed medically necessary to admit to the hospital for further treatment. Dogs with clinical signs of SM (including neck pain on examination) will not be eligible for this screening procedure and asked to make an a p p o i n t m e n t fo r a diagnostic work-up, if desired. Auburn University s veterinary hospital is a teaching hospital, so students, interns, and r e s i d e n t s m a y b e involved in the screening and treatment of dogs. All students, interns and residents involved in the CM sc reening s w i ll b e o v e r s e e n b y a b o a r d - c e r t i f i e d neurologist. 5 You Can Help! Please volunteer! It s FUN! By the time this Summer edition of the newsletter is received we will already be gearing up for the last two COS shows of the year! Our York PA show in conjunction with CNE and our Chattanooga TN show in conjunction with CMW. We need YOU to help! Please consider being a gate steward, a ring steward, announcer, table steward, helping with the hospitality table, etc. Volunteers Needed for Chattanooga Show This is an early request but we really need volunteers to make our Chattanooga Choo Choo show in December to be a success! Are you bringing your spouse? Are you coming just to watch the show and would like to help? Only have one or two entries and want to help the Club? NOW is your chance! We need the following positions filled for Thursday evening Sweeps, Friday & Saturday Conformation classes! First come, first served!! Listed below are the positions needed and a short description of duties. If you can volunteer, please contact show co-chair Sharon Utych via at utych@earthlink.net and let her know the position, the day and either AM or PM along with your mobile number contact information. Table Steward: You may table steward in either the am or pm or all day if you would care to! The Table Steward is responsible for submitting accurate Show Results to the Points Secretary, the host Club President, and the Show Secretary. Signs and dates the Table Steward Catalog. Ensures that the Judge signs and dates the Judge s Results Book. Ensures that the Ring Steward signs and dates the Ring Steward Catalog. Ensures that the marked catalogs from the Ring, Table, and Gate Stewards match. Forwards the Show Results to the Points Secretary within 14 days of the show or the host club will incur a monetary fine and the Club President or their designee immediately following the show. Announcer: You may announce the show in either the am or pm or all day if you would care to! The announcer sits at the head table with the Table Steward and with a microphone announces the classes, general announcements, winners, etc. Gate Steward: You may table steward in either the am or pm or all day if you would care to! The Gate Steward is responsible for assisting the Ring Steward in preparing exhibitors to enter the Show Ring and providing a marked catalog with the show results. The Gate Steward remains at the gate and does not enter the Show Ring unless they are finished showing dogs for the day. Lines up the exhibitors in catalog order for class competitions. Informs the Ring Steward of any absences. Informs the Ring Steward of any late exhibitors. Verifies that exhibitors display the correct numbers. Ring Steward: This is an ALL DAY position only! The Ring Steward is responsible for assisting the Judge, managing the exhibitors in the Show Ring, and providing a marked catalog with the show results. The Ring Steward must do the job the entire show. Although the Ring Steward cannot show any dogs that day, another club member may show their dogs for them as a courtesy. The Ring Steward should be dressed in the same manner as the Judge. Some of the main responsibilities are: Updates the Judge on general policies. Determines the order that the Judge wants to see the class winners line up for the Winners Competition Puppy to Open or Open to Puppy. Determines how the Judge wants to handle exhibitors who arrive after the class has started and before the last dog is seen. Escorts all exhibitors into the Show Ring. Verifies the exhibitors in the class or competition are present and in the appropriate order before judging starts and informs the Judge when the class or competition is ready. Updates the Table Steward with the absences from the class or competition. Ensures that the exhibit area used for moving the dog is clear during individual examination. Communicates general instructions from the Judge to the Exhibitors. Ensures inactive exhibitors follow instructions when a class is split, including moving in and out of the Show Ring when appropriate. Provides exhibitor clean-up materials when their dog has an accident in the ring. Circumstances may dictate that the Ring Steward actually clean up the accident. Hands the Judge the rosettes and prizes for the associated award before they are presented. Enters the show numbers for Class Placements, Major Winners, and Special Awards Winners in the Ring Steward Catalog. Updates the Table Steward with the show numbers for the Class Placements, Major Winners, and Special Award Winners. 6 Don t Miss our Saturday Seminar at the Choo Choo! COS is proud to announce that during our December show at the Chattanooga Choo Choo Hotel our seminar speaker on Saturday evening be will be the renown Dr. Carmen Battaglia. This is a three hour seminar entitled Pedigree Analysis & Structure and Movement. More details and advertisement of this seminar will be forthcoming. This seminar is open to both members of the CKCSC USA and non members of outside breed clubs or dog fanciers who wish to attend. There will be special discounted club member pricing for those who pay when they submit their registrations for the December show, or you can choose to pay at the door for the non discounted member pricing. There will also be non member pricing available. If you are not familiar with Dr. Battaglia, he developed several programs including Breeding Better Dogs, Developing Puppies and Structure & Movement. He also has developed software called Stick Dog that helps you track and breed better dogs. Carmen was given his first dog by his grandfather when he was five years old. That was the beginning of a lifelong fascination with all aspects of dog behavior, breeding, training and showing. He has personally bred and finished several Champions, Select Dogs, Futurity and Maturity winners. Today, he is considered an expert as well as a highly respected AKC judge of more than 40 breeds. Dr. Carmen Battaglia By education, (holding the Masters and Doctorate from Florida State University), he is a researcher, lecturer and author. His articles have appeared in the "AKC Gazette", "Dog World", "Dog News", "Canadian Shepherd Journal", "South African Dog Magazine" as well as dog publications in Australia and Ireland. Being very active in the dog world, Dr. Battaglia is a Director of the American Kennel Club and has served as Chairman of such important committees as: National Genetics Committee (German Shepherd Dog Club of America), the American Kennel Club Committee for the Future, the Operations and Planning Committee, as well as the Health and Education Delegates Committee. The AKC called upon his expertise in genetics to create and develop their DNA program. He is also a much-sought-after speaker on this topic for television and radio talk shows. Author of several different books on dog breeding, Dr. Battaglia has gained worldwide recognition, most notably for the program he developed - "Breeding Better Dogs". Popular demand has prompted the creation of a seminar for dog clubs which mirrors his book and a video of this method which has been presented across the country and considered an imperative foundation to any successful breeding program. Be sure to make plans to attend this great seminar and show weekend! Page 6

7 Thank You to Our Election Committee A very BIG THANK YOU to our great Election Committee members, K a y T r a d a n d D i x i e Westmoreland! The process was tedious and took well over 4 hours to count all votes submitted by the COS members who voted. It was a heavy turnout, with 199 ballots mailed, 133 received. That meant first observi n g o u t s i d e envelopes for validity, then opening both the o u t s i d e a n d i n s i d e envelops and finally reviewing the ballot for validation and performing a three way counting and tying out the vote count! WHEW! W e r e po r t e d o u r findings to Nancy M a d d o x, C O S S e c r e t a r y f o r c o n t a c t i n g t h e nominees. This was a tedious job and I want to thank Kay and Dixie for giving up their Thursday to count the ballots! We had a great time c h a t t i n g t o o afterward with our l i g h t l u n c h t h a t turned into a dinner! Thanks again ladies, YOU ROCK! S h a r o n U t y c h, Election Chair CHARGE IT!!! 8 2104 AGM Meeting Minutes Summer 2014 MINUTES 2014 AGM CAVALIERS OF THE SOUTH, May 10, 2014 Meeting brought to order at approximately 5:30 pm by our President, Paula Ayers. Paula thanked the members for their attendance and help at our shows during the years of her presidency, especially the board members. A motion was made to disperse with the reading of the minutes, as they were published in the newsletter. This was seconded and motion was passed. Kevin Cline gave a treasurer s report, stating that the COS financial situation has been stable over the last four years. He stated that we have approximately $62,000 in our savings account and $45,000 in our checking account. He told us that our lead shows were in March and May and that we normally lose money on our December show. He suggested we might think about a better location for that show. This coming December the show will be in Chattanooga. Michelle Lander read a report from Sharon Utych asking the members to send brags and articles to be published in the newsletter. Paula spoke for the Judges Committee. She explained to the membership that the COS board IS the Judge s Committee. Board members all make suggestions for judges they would like hired. Linda Whitmire, head of the nominating committee, thanked Brenda Martz and Sue Bess for their work with her on the committee. She gave a report concerning the recent election of new officers and directors. She read the slate presented to the membership by the nominating committee. 9 2014 AGM Meeting Minutes Continued Kay Trad spoke for the election commission. The members of the commission were Sharon Utych, chair; Dixie Westmoreland and Kay Trad. The commission met on 5/1/14. Nancy Maddox read the full results of the ballot voting to the membership. Election Results: 199 Ballots were mailed. 133 Ballots were returned. 6 Ballots were deemed invalid. 127 Ballots were valid. These are Paula Ayers, Pat Lander, and Nancy Maddox. Linda Whitmire told about the AKC club puppy picnics held in Atlanta area and suggested that it would be nice if the COS members could do this along with that club. 10 A Letter to the Editor Summer 2014 HOW THE ANIMAL RIGHTS MOVEMENT AFFECTS YOUR RIGHT TO OWN AND OR BREED CAVALIER KING CHARLES SPANIELS We have no ethical obligation to preserve the different breeds of livestock produced through selective breeding One generation and out. We have no problems with the extinction of domestic animals. They are creations of human selective breeding. CEO Wayne Pacelle, as reported in Animal People News, May1993 Don t breed, don t buy, and don t even accept giveaways. CEO John Hoyt, The Humane Society of the United States in a 1991 speech HSUS resolution, adopted 1980-Pursue on all fronts the clear articulation and establishment of the rights of all animals within the full range of American life and culture. The Humane Society of the United States is an animal rights group not to be confused with an animal welfare group. They advertise that they save animals with the dollars you send them but, in fact only 1 % of the money raised in 2012 actually found its way to the animals they advertise you will help. HSUS is in fact a strongly organized political organization that is working state by state and county by county to end the breeding of all domesticated animals. If you really want to help dogs and cats then I suggest you support your local municipal shelter or rescue organizations. This way you know that your money is being spent on the animals and not a political agenda. It is important that you, as a Cavalier owner and possibly a breeder of these lovely dogs, understand the politics of owning and breeding Of the many bills filed annually around the country that relate to animals, there are several that we see each and every legislative session and this year was no exception. These bills tend to deal with what is often referred to as animal rights issues vs animal welfare. People who support animal rights believe that an animal should be afforded the same rights as you or your children. On the other hand, most animal welfare organizations and people support the humane care and treatment of animals. Over the past decade these animal rights bills have been filed with a variety of approaches and ever changing language but, the intent has always been the same: stopping the sale of pure bred dogs and cats! Then, create not for profit organizations with the ability to raise large amounts of money for animal related activities to be doled out with little oversight from government or voters. This has been a touchy issue in many state Legislatures. These bills at first glance seem to make good sense but, when read in their entirety, they pose an ethical question for those who must pass the bills. That question is: when do the rights of animals supersede the rights of people under the 4 th and 14 th Amendment to the United States Constitution? Fourth Amendment to the United States Constitution The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized. Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution Section 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws. Many of the animal rights bills filed each year fail because they are drafted in such a way that citizens and business owners of this great country would lose their personal rights if these bills passed. I think you would be hard pressed to find any breeder or Cavalier lover who does not support animal welfare. But, many of us would have concerns when laws are proposed that attempts to take away the rights of citizens. However, this does not stop the HSUS and PETA from pushing these bills year after year. They don t always succeed but, they chip away a little bit at a time and are getting closer and closer to their goal. Each year, we see at least one bill filed in Florida that has small hobby breeders and large scaled breeders firmly in their sites. In almost every rendition of this bill, the small hobby breeder is treated just the same as a large commercial breeder. In the State of Florida dog breeders have been under attack for 5 years. The 2014 Legislative Session was no exception. This session House Bill 1305 Relating to Commercial Breeders, was filed and if passed, would have required any breeder who owns one intact female and sells 16 puppies a year to be classified as a commercial breeder. As a commercial breeder you would be required by law to buy an annual license and register with the State. The application form you then must sign, gives the State the right to enter your property for inspection without cause or a warrant! Page 10

11 A Letter to the Editor Failure to fill out the forms and buy the license could result in a Third Degree Felony charge and up to 5 years in jail. Examples of third-degree felonies include elder abuse, assault and battery, drug possession, driving under the influence, child molestation, arson, transmission of pornography, embezzlement, theft, and fraud. Extreme?? Yes! Extreme is exactly what we are seeing each year. This bill even required if you had a mobile home or other vehicle in which you carried your animals, it too be made available for inspection. Now, I can already hear you saying to yourself, I don t breed that many dogs or Cavaliers have small litters so this does not hurt me or my dogs! But, in a large breed of dogs, this is only a litter and a half! This year the bill says sixteen puppies and then next year it says 8 puppies and then the next year it becomes a mandatory spay and neuter bill which requires all puppies over the age of four months be fixed. Ridiculous you say! Not really, this very bill was filed in Florida 5 years ago. This legislation was so bad that just about every dog breeder and enthusiast in the State awoke from their stupor and got politically involved for one Session. A petition opposing the bill was passed out at dog shows all over the State and we were able to gather thousands of signatures stopping the bill from becoming law. IF YOU ARE NOT AT THE TABLE YOU ARE ON THE TABLE When I say they awoke from their stupor, I am not being dramatic. Most dog enthusiast and breeders just love dogs and want to spend their life with them. By nature animal lovers are caring and easy going. We want to just be left alone to do what we want with our Cavaliers and our Cavalier friends but, that has to change if we are going to continue to have the right to own pure bred dogs. The statement above is so true, if you are not politically at the table you will be dinner! HSUS and PETA are at the table for every meal. They hold lobbying seminars at animal shelters, law schools, and vet schools in just about every state in the country. Have you noticed your vet and vet tech asking you if you are adopting your puppies out? Mine never say selling any more because they have been trained not to. HSUS has its own national veterinary association that competes with the American Veterinary Medical Association. Selling and breeding of dogs is now considered in bad taste by many young and recently graduated veterinarians. Are you beginning to see how this could be your problem someday? It is important that you get involved now! I hope you are now asking yourself, how can you do that? First, many cities and counties have Animal Advisory Boards. These Boards make many of the decisions about the local animal ordinances and make recommendations to the municipalities on these issues. They have the power to change your rights! Anyone can apply to serve on these boards, but in most cases you must be approved by the Mayor or Commissioners. The animal rights groups are taking over these boards and we need to get positions on these advisory boards or councils. So, get to know your Mayor and Commission. If you don t feel comfortable doing this then at least read your local animal ordinance. You may be surprised what it says. Add yourself to your county or cities interested party list. You may have to search around a little on their websites or make a call but, all of this is now available on line. Second, find out who your state Senator and Representative are. If you are scared to call them and meet with them then at least look them up and know who they are. Just in case you ever get a call to arms on a dog issue. Be able to at least find them or send them an , but even better, go meet them when they are not in session and let them get to know you. They need to know that there are good dog owners and breeders out there. NOT JUST BAD BREEDERS AND PUREBRED OWN- ERS! Judge Aum Puenchalard (UK) Junior Puppy Dog 1. Fairchilds, Closeburn Maciver Alan - Very nice Blenheim, very much baby, level topline with good reach of neck, richly marked, beautiful dark eyes, show well, a promising young boy. 2. Gentil s, Angel spride Just A Gigolo - Nice headed Blenhiem with good overall size and balance, well marked with a good tailset and topline, move with drive and well presented handled well. 3. D & C Wills, Brookhaven Jesse Mckinley - A ruby with a large dark eyes, sweet temperament, good pigment,needs more training to access fully Senior Puppy Dog Lovely Class of youngsters who could all change places on a different day. 1. Hodges & Perkins, Mimric Buffalo Gal - Blenheim with sweet head nice size, level topline and good reach of neck, dark eyes, well laid shoulders, move well with good tail set carriage. Maddox s, Denham Over The Moon - Super black and tan,with lots to like about her very pretty head and expression, lovely shape standing and on the move, long ears,in lovely coat and condition,good neck and lay of shoulders. Geldermans, Dallarock Dora - Blenheim with excellent head type, good eyes good neck and pigment, level topline,liked her overall balance and shape,just needs a little more coat to complete the picture, move and standing nicely.
