Introduction The European Guild of Canine Bowen Therapists (EGCBT) was set up to create a network of properly skilled and experienced Canine Bowen Technique therapists who are able to work alongside other professionals in the canine world to help dogs - vets, trainers, behaviourists, rescue centres, hydrotherapists, nutritionists. In addition, EGCBT continues to develop and advance the Bowen Technique to the advantage of dogs. Our Practitioner course in Canine Bowen Technique (CBT) has been developed by Bowen therapists and experienced dog trainers and behaviourists Sally and Ron Askew, with the aid of one of the top orthopaedic vets in the UK, and has been used for several years very successfully in their canine behavioural and rehabilitation work. The course is currently the only course in Bowen for dogs recognised by both the Bowen Therapy Professional Association (BTPA) and Bowen Association UK. It is recognised by both organisations for CPD s. For people who only wish to use Canine Bowen Technique on their own dogs, or who wish to try out CBT before committing to the full Practitioner course, we also offer a Self-Interest option, which consists of just the first Module of the Practitioner course, and gives instruction on the basic level procedures of Canine Bowen Technique. "I wasn't sure what to expect from my Canine Bowen Technique course, but I was blown away. Incredibly in-depth teaching from inspirational people, fantastic support when it was needed and above all, great chances to practice and observe, all with infinite kindness and deep respect for the dogs. It's also brought more depth and 'feel' into my human treatments. It was a privilege to learn with Carole and Eileen, and of course Ron (who introduced Canine Bowen to the UK) and Maya (the superstar vet). It's humbling and a joy to help dogs feel better, and my relationship with my own dog is certainly on a deeper and more communicative level now. 4 Aims & Objectives Our primary aim is to improve the health and well-being of dogs. We do this by: o offering inspiring and rewarding courses in Canine Bowen Technique. o educating students to a high professional standard, thus enhancing the quality and credibility of this relatively-new complementary therapy. o keeping class sizes small, thus allowing for maximum interaction between student and teacher, and minimising stress to the dogs involved. o using the highest qualified, experienced and respected teachers in their field. o delivering a high standard, quality product to the best of our ability where the needs of dogs are a priority. On our courses we believe very much in putting the welfare of dogs first. We believe that the best dog to help students learn is their own dog a dog with which they have already built up a partnership of trust and respect. A dog who will help them learn. We do not hold classes in Rescue Centres or demonstrate on Rescue Centre dogs before an audience, because this would place unnecessary additional stress on those dogs at an already stressful stage in their lives. We do however encourage students to work with Rescue Centres after graduation because the effects of Canine Bowen Technique can be extremely beneficial to these dogs. At the start of this course, I believed I knew a bit about dogs and had a good relationship with my own. The course has been transformational. Carole, Eileen, Ron and Maya created a good balance between education, training and support. My knowledge of many aspects of dogs has been increased beyond expectation as indeed has my respect for them. On a more personal level, it has enhanced my relationship with my own and taken it to a much deeper level. I look forward to developing my career as a Canine Bowen Therapist and putting into practice everything I ve learned. Thank you E.G.C.B.T. 5 What is the Canine Bowen Technique? The Canine Bowen Technique is a light-touch therapy offering dogs a gentle, non-invasive and effective hands-on technique that aims to promote healing, pain-relief and body/energy rebalancing. It is based on the principles of a successful human modality - the Bowen Technique - which was developed by Tom Bowen, an Australian, in the 1950 s, and brought to the UK in the early 1990 s. Its adaptation in the UK for use on dogs was started in 2001 by Sally and Ron Askew, who started on their own dogs, and then, with the cooperation and support of their local vets, integrated their findings into their canine behavioural and rehabilitation work with grea t success. Practitioners use thumbs and fingers on precise points of the dog s body to perform unique sets of rolling-type moves over muscles, ligaments, tendons and soft tissue to encourage the body to reset and realign itself. The work is very subtle and involves no hard or prolonged pressure. A key feature of Canine Bowen Technique is that the treatment is never forced on the dog - in fact provoking the body into a fearful or defensive reaction is very much counterproductive to maximising the effects of the treatment. Thus an important part of Canine Bowen Technique is recognising and respecting when the dog indicates it has received what it needs. Typical areas which are regularly seen in clinic are: o Acute injury e.g. sprains and strains. o Chronic conditions and degenerative disease - helping to improve the dog s quality of life. o Rescue/re-homed dogs - relaxation of tension caused by earlier stress and trauma. o Pre and post-operative surgery - reducing recovery times. 6 Our Courses Practitioner Course Our Practitioner course has been designed for those with canine experience and consists of four Modules. However, two training options for Canine Bowen Technique are available: Self-Interest Consisting of Module 1 of the Practitioner course, this option provides the basic level of Canine Bowen Technique and may be used by those students who wish to use Canine Bowen Technique procedures in a selfinterest manner solely for use on their own dogs, or who wish to try out CBT before committing to the full Practitioner course. The EGCBT Practitioner course is intended to provide a credible and respected standard of professional training in Canine Bowen Technique. Module 1 is as for the Self-interest option, and then Modules 2-4 complete the full course. These latter Modules provide students with the second level of Canine Bowen Technique procedures, and also include some basic Anatomy & Physiology teaching, how to wo rk with vets and within the Law, how to conduct client consultations, and more on the observation, assessment and treating of unfamiliar dogs. Alongside the Canine Bowen Technique other areas which can greatly affect the outcome of a Canine Bowen Technique session will be taught to ensure that therapists have a good understanding of dogs and their needs. These areas include topics such as understanding the dog s body language, considering the type of relationship the owner has with their dog, and, most importantly, recognising the symptoms, causes and effects of stress, etc. CAROLE JUSTICE GRAY (PROSPECTUS 2017.V 2) 6

Entry Requirements for Training in Canine Bowen Technique Training is available for those who meet the following criteria: All students (Self-interest and Practitioner) must have completed the Introductory Level tuition of the Bowen Technique on humans (for example if training with CBS Module 1 is 3-days or if training with Bowtech Modules 1 & 2 is 4 days), prior to commencing the Canine Bowen Technique course. This is to ensure that students already have an understanding of the Bowen Technique and will have practiced their technique on people before being allowed to work on dogs. Please contact us if you require details of human Bowen Technique training providers. o Before students can be awarded the EGCBT Practitioner Certificate in Canine Bowen Technique, Practitioner-course students must also have completed their training in the Bowen Technique on humans. This is to ensure that practitioners have a complete understanding of the Bowen Technique. This human Bowen training could be done either before, during, or after our Canine Bowen Technique course, although doing both canine and human courses at the same time does involve a high workload from the need to do two sets of case studies. (Veterinary Surgeons and qualified Veterinary Nurses on the RCVS list who wish to study Canine Bowen Technique do not have to complete the human Bowen course in order to receive the EGCBT Practitioner Certificate, but are required to have completed the Introductory Level of the Bowen Technique on humans prior to starting the Canine Bowen Technique course). o Applicants must satisfy the course organisers of their aptitude for working with dogs by including brief details showing their experience of working and/or living with dogs. o Ideally, although not essential, students should bring their own dog to work with during the hands-on parts of the course. This is to ensure that there is already a bond of trust between dog and student to enable the practice sessions to proceed with minimal stress to the dog. o In order to ensure for the health and welfare of the dog, and also for legal reasons, students will need to have had the dog examined by a vet sometime in the previous 6 months, and obtain the vet s written permission for Bowen to be performed on the dog. o Applicants will be required to provide evidence of having adequate personal liability insurance, or be prepared to accept personal liability for any accident or injury caused by their dog whilst attending the course. o Application Forms can be obtained from the organisers website or via request (details on page 2). Final acceptance onto the course is subject to an informal interview, typically conducted by telephone. CAROLE JUSTICE GRAY (PROSPECTUS 2017.V 2) 7

Course Organisation and Structure The Practitioner course will consist of twelve days training split into four modules. The following is the proposed outline of the course, however changes may be made at the discretion of the organisers : Module 1 (3 days) may also be attended as a Self-Interest option Comparison of Human and Canine Bowen Technique; The Canine Bowen Technique Move; Reactions and Aftercare; Factors affecting the outcome of a Canine Bowen Technique session; Canine Communication and Body Language; Approaching & Handling Dogs; Basic Observation & Assessment; Canine Bowen Technique Level I. Module 2 (3 days) Canine Bowen and the Law - working with Vets; Basic Canine Anatomy and Physiology; Major muscles and joints; Pain in dogs; Clinical observation of dogs; Dog Care advice; Basic First Aid for dogs; Client Consultations; Further Observation & Assessment; A revision and practice of Canine Bowen Technique Level I. After completion of this module of the course the student should have a good understanding of the basic level of the Canine Bowen Technique and to be confident using it. At this time the student will be required to complete two written assignments at home and 10 case studies, with at least three Bowen sessions per dog. Students who wish to proceed to the next module will need to complete and submit the correspondence work by the deadlines given, prior to the next module. Module 3 (3 days) Stress - causes and effects in dogs; Further discussion on more factors affecting the outcome of a Canine Bowen Technique treatment e.g. exercise regimes, nutrition, the dog s day-to-day life with its carer; A review and practice of the work of the previous modules followed by Canine Bowen Technique Level II. CAROLE JUSTICE GRAY (PROSPECTUS 2017.V 2) 8

On completion of this module, the student will be required to complete two further written assignments at home and 10 case studies, with at least three Bowen sessions per dog. Students who wish to proceed to Module 4 will need to complete and submit the correspondence work by the deadlines given, prior to the start of Module. Module 4 (Final module - 3 days) This module will be a review, practice and final assessment of all the work. Also included will be some further Canine Bowen Technique moves. In summary, the Practitioner course will include: The timetable for the Practitioner course is spread out over approximately months and is designed to ensure that students have sufficient time to complete all written correspondence work and case studies, and gain maximum hands-on experience, skill and practice of Canine Bowen Technique. It also enables students time to complete the Bowen Technique course on humans, if they have not already done so. o A solid grounding in the theory and practice of the Canine Bowen Technique. o Factors affecting the outcome of Canine Bowen Technique sessions. o Aspects of holistic dog care. o Canine communication & body language. o Basic Canine Anatomy & Physiology. o Basic Canine First Aid. o Supervised Hands-on experience. o Detailed and illustrated teaching notes will be provided. Carole & Eileen truly have commitment and respect for the wellbeing of dogs. The dogs come first on this course and rightly so. Canine Bowen Technique is a gentle and respectful therapy that can only be delivered if learnt in a true holistic manner. EGCBT course and tutors deliver more than a new skill, they deliver a true holistic canine experience where inputs are more a priority than potential outcomes. M.M. (2014 UK Practitioner course) CAROLE JUSTICE GRAY (PROSPECTUS 2017.V 2) 9

Practical Work The welfare of dogs is of prime importance and a respectful relationship between therapist and dog is encouraged at all times. As the course contains many practical elements, students should ideally bring a suitable dog to work with, and for which they will be responsible at all times. In order to allow the dogs opportunity for peace and quiet when they are not required for practical work we will normally expect them either to be kept in an indoor kennel (brought by the student) or to remain happily and safely (ventilated/shaded etc.) in the car - frequent breaks will be given for students to see to their dog's needs. If however special arrangements are required, please contact us. For the dogs wellbeing students 1 st familiarise themselves with procedures on soft toys prior to working with real dogs. Assessments (Full Practitioner course) On the full Practitioner course there will be on-going assessment of students via written assignments, supervised practical work, and case logbook, and students will need to meet the required standard at each stage of the course before proceeding to the next stage. At the end of the course there will be a practical and written assessments. In order to successfully complete the course, students will be expected to: o Achieve the required standard in the case studies. o Achieve the required standard in the four written course assignments. o Achieve the required standard in the practical and written assessments. Veterinary surgeons and nurses are exempt from the A&P part of the final assessment and the (two) A&P course assignments. CAROLE JUSTICE GRAY (PROSPECTUS 2017.V 2) 10

Standards, Support and Development Telephone and/or support is available to all students during the course and to therapists following successful graduation. In 2012 Ron and Sally Askew decided to retire and in 2014 authorised Carole and Eileen to teach the course in the future. They do however continue to offer Carole and Eileen support when required, helping to ensure Canine Bowen Technique and the knowledge they gained over the years is passed on to students. On graduation therapists have the opportunity to become full members of EGCBT, and to be shown as such on the EGCBT website. Full members undertake to hold full professional indemnity insurance covering their work on animals, to agree to uphold a strict Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct, and to continue to maintain and develop their Canine Bowen Technique skills, by attending two on going development days per year. To this end, EGCBT provide post-graduate workshops & seminars in Canine Bowen Technique and other topics which aim to consolidate and develop the graduate s knowledge of and work with dogs. 14 Personnel Profiles Teachers Carole Justice Gray Carole has grown up with dogs mainly Dachshunds and Golden Retrievers and is now firmly in love with Hungarian Vizsla s. She lived without a dog only when working in London as an advertising producer in the 1990 s. During this time, she satisfied her love of animals by developing a keen interest in horses later becoming involved in Equine and Canine behaviour and training. As a result of this Carole was given a somewhat complicated Hungarian Vizsla, who along with her own return from ill health (M.E.) firmly established her obsession with complementary therapies and creating the most positive relationships you can with dogs. Carole qualified as a Human Bowen therapist in 2008 and as a Canine Bowen Technique Therapist in She has busy human practices in Oxfordshire and Northamptonshire and travels all over the country working with dogs in her role as a Canine Bowen Technique therapist. She is a member of the Bowen Association UK, a full member of and the UK Cocoordinator of the European Guild of Canine Bowen Therapists (EGCBT), as well as being a registered human practitioner with the Complementary & Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC). In 2014 after working with and shadowing Sally & Ron Askew for two years in UK and Switzerland, Carole began running and teaching the established EGCBT Canine Bowen Technique self-interest and practitioner course in the UK with fellow Canine Bowen Technique practitioner Eileen Smith. In 2016 Carole has assisted Nicole Frohlich with her EGCBT Canine Bowen Technique course in Switzerland and will be teaching in the Netherlands during 2016/17. Eileen Smith Eileen was raised with several pets, one of whom was a nervous abused rescue dog. Having left Teacher Training college, married and set up home she began a fascinating journey being trained and loved by Elkhounds. These were soon joined by a variety of rescue dogs who continued to teach her so much more. Finding that Elkhounds were not highly regarded at the local obedience club she threw away the check chain and instead negotiated with her dogs to find a more successful way forward. She began working with CAROLE JUSTICE GRAY (PROSPECTUS 2017.V 2) 14

others to help them enjoy living with and working with their dogs in Eileen's association with dogs has mostly been with companion dogs in training and canine athletes in competitive sports. For ten years she was co-trainer with Sally Hopkins at Dog- Games, involving 1-1 training for dogs who, for behavioural reasons, were unable to access group training at clubs. Eileen has studied with as many highly regarded teachers as possible including Turid Rugaas, Sally Askew, Sheila Harper and Alan Baumann. Having two daughters and teaching younger and younger children, Eileen became so fascinated with the early learning stages she then took an Advanced Diploma in Early years development with Special Needs. She then taught in Special Needs Nurseries and Assessment Units until she was medically retired with M.E. Eileen heard of Bowen while she was recovering and began training with ECBC and then EGCBT in 2005 primarily for her own canine family. She has been working as a Human and Canine Bowen Therapist ever since and continues to work mainly with elderly, rescue and Agility dogs. In 2014 after working with and shadowing Sally & Ron Askew in the UK, Eileen began working with Carole teaching the established EGCBT Canine Bowen Technique self-interest and practitioner course in the UK. Dr. med vet Maya Bräm MRCVS After completing her studies in veterinary medicine in Switzerland, Maya specialised in veterinary behaviour medicine with the Swiss veterinary association STVV and worked with Prof. Daniel Mills in Lincoln (UK). She is currently a resident in Veterinary Behaviour Medicine of the ECAWBM, seeing clinical cases at the universities of Zürich and Bern and her own private practice in Basel (Switzerland) and focusing on her research on animal personality at the university of Bern (Switzerland). The observation that physical and behaviour problems are often linked sparked her interest in a more holistic approach to working with animals (and their owners), which led to her studying herbal medicine for animals in the UK and to learning the Bowen Technique for dogs and humans. 16 Course Developers Sally Askew B.Sc. C&G Cert SAN, GEOTA Cert, ECBS Cert Ron Askew B.Sc. ECBS Cert Sally and Ron Askew - the founders of EGCBT - are, first of all, dog lovers, and have either owned or lived around dogs all their lives. They ran their own dog -training school for many years, using modern, less traditional methods which they developed whilst attending a twoyear long, hands-on, International Dog Trainers School. Here they were taught by world - renowned dog trainers and behaviourists including Turid Rugaas from Norway, Allan Bauman from USA, and John Rogerson and Sheila Harper from UK. This extensive course made them aware of causes and symptoms of stress in dogs and how these affected a dog s health and behaviour, and its ability to learn. It also gave them an insight into the language dogs use to communicate not only with each other but with humans as well. For almost 20 years Sally was a member of the APDT (Association of Pet Dog Trainers) and GEOTA (Guild of Essential Oil Practitioners for Animals) as well as being an Honorary Member of PDTE (Pet Dog Trainers of Europe). She is a human Nutritionist and one of only a few nonveterinary people to have the C&G Certificate in Small Animal Nutrition. As well as being a qualified teacher of people, Sally is trained in Energy work and is accredited to teach Chi Kung to an Advanced Level. Sally s work with dogs is internationally acknowledged and she is in demand as a speaker for professional organisations as well as having lectured in many European countries on the holistic approach to living with a dog, canine nutrition, how health affects canine behaviour, and the use of complementary therapies in maintaining the dog s optimum health. They qualified as Bowen Therapists on humans in January 2002 and since then, with the consent and help of local vets, have worked on adapting the use of Bowen for dogs, where they have had great success. They have also attended workshops in Canine Acupressure, Shiatsu for Dogs, and Canine Touch, and some elements of this course have been influenced by these other therapies. The EGCBT Practitioner course has now been running since 2004 in the UK, and from 2006 has also been held in Switzerland. In 2013 the EGCBT course started to be taught in the Netherlands.
